Im Oktober brachten SOULFLY ihr neues Album "Savages" heraus und eine Tour der Band mit Zyon als neuen Drummer und dessen Mutter als Managerin der Band gleicht fast einem Familienausflug. Wir hatten die Chance mit Max Cavalera und seinem Sohn Zyon über das neue Album, diverse Erlebnisse, die Kindheit und die aktuelle Tour zu sprechen.


Hi Max! Wie geht’s dir und was machst du im Moment?
Die Aufnahmen von „Savages“ wurden gerade beendet. Was kannst du mir über das Songwriting und den Produktionsablauf erzählen? Habt ihr irgendetwas anders gemacht als sonst? Sind spezielle oder lustige Sachen vorgefallen?


Ich arbeite zuhause an den Songs. Zuerst schreibe ich die Hauptriffs vom Album und dann habe ich mit Zyon gejammed und die kompletten Songs fertig gemacht. Es war ein mörderischer Prozess. Terry Date hat dann das Album produziert, ich wollte schon seit Ewigkeiten mal mit ihm zusammenarbeiten. Er ist super professionell und der Sound von dem Album ist ein Wahnsinn!!!




Du arbeitest ja jetzt ganz offiziell mit Zyon zusammen,wie war es mit dem eigenen Sohn an einem kompletten Album zu arbeiten und mit ihm auf Tour zu gehen?


Es war großartig. Ich habe wirklich hart mit ihm gearbeitet. Wir haben fast fünf Stunden täglich gejammed und die neuen Songs geschrieben.


Wenn ich so 20 Jahre zurückdenke, als Zyons Herzschlag als Intro auf „Refuse/Resist“ war und nun tritt er in die Fußstapfen seines Vaters – ich wette, dass macht dich sehr stolz. Wie geht’s dir dabei?


Es ist super speziell. Ich bin extrem stolz auf ihn und seinen Bruder, der bei LADY KONG ist. und ich finde Zyon ist ein begnadeter Drummer.


Du hast eine illustre Runde an Gastmusikern auf dem neuen Album. Wie kam das? Hast du jeden einzelnen ganz speziell ausgesucht, oder war es oft zufällig?


Neil von CLUTH habe ich den Song auf den Leib geschrieben. Es hat so einen Cowboy Metal-Anfang. Bei „Fallen“ ist Jamie von einer meiner Lieblingsbands dabei I DECLARE WAR. Seine Stimme ist tiefer als man sich vorstellen kann. Mitch von NAPALM DEATH ist ein alter Freund von mir, er hat Zyons Windeln gewechselt, als dieser noch ein Baby war und er hat einen tollen Gesangsstil, eine sehr schrille Stimme und dann noch meinen Sohn Igor auf „Bloodshed“, dieses Lied ist so genial und Tony singt auf Spanisch bei „El Comegentem“, einem Song über einen venezulanischen Kannibalen Serienkiller.


Es sind viele sehr starke Nummern auf dem Album, manche stechen aber mehr hervor. „Cannibal Holocaust“ zum Beispiel. Wurde dieser Song vom gleichnamigen Film inspiriert, oder woher dieser Titel?


Es ist alles mit dem Titel des Albums verknüpft, „Savages“, aber natürlich habe ich den „Cannibal Holocaust“ Film gesehen. Der ist verdammt großartig.


Ein anderes Lied, das gleich meine Aufmerksamkeit hatte war „Ayatollah Of Rock ‚n‘ Rolla“ – bitte sag, was es mit diesem Song auf sich hat.


Ja das ist eine Zeile aus „Mad Max II“ und diesen Film habe ich immer geliebt. Der Klang von „Ayatollah Of Rock n Rolla, der Herrscher über Wasteland.


Was ist dein persönlicher Favorit auf dem Album und warum?


„Bloodshed“, ich liebe das Anfangsriff und die Melodie beim Refrain.




Gibt es ein Konzept hinter dem Albumtitel? Bei den Songtiteln kommt es einem so vor…


Ja ein bisschen, Savages – die Wildnis, der Zustand des menschlichen Bewusstseins heutzutage.


Was kannst du uns über das Artwork erzählen, was steckt dahinter?


Man sieht darauf einen Stammesschädel, Paul Stottler hat das Artwork designed. Er hat ein paar wirklich großartige Artworks für SACRED REICH gemacht, ganz speziell das „Surf Nicaragua“ Design.


Was macht Igor zur Zeit und plant ihr etwas mit CAVALERA CONSPIRACY?


Mit CAVALERA CONSPIRACY werden wir nächstes Jahr das dritte Album herausbringen. Es wird krank und ziemlich schnell.


Nach den ganzen Sommer Festivals und Club Shows, wann werdet ihr mit einer „Savages“ Europa Tournee starten?


Ja, es wird eine „Savages“ Welttournee geben.


Wie oft passiert es euch, dass ihr komplett durchsucht und auf Flughäfen gefilzt werdet? Was erzählt ihr dann den Leuten und wie reagieren diese, wenn sie herausfinden, dass ihr verdammte Rockstars seid?


Es ist gewaltig lästig, wenn man die ganze Zeit durchsucht wird, selbst wenn sie mich erkennen werde ich gefilzt. Aber das ist Zeitverschwendung, meine Partytage sind vorüber!



Weiter ging es im Gespräch mit Sohn Zyon Cavalera:

Hi Zyon, ich hoffe, dir geht’s gut! Was machst du im Moment?


Es geht mir großartig! Ich bin grad in Europa angekommen und Feuer und Flamme um ein paar dieser verrückten Shows zu spielen.


Vom Heartbeat zum Drumbeat ;) Wie fühlt es sich an, wie ist es für dich, mit deinem Vater Musik zu machen?


Es fühlt sich so episch an. Es gibt nicht viele Kinder, die diese Chance bekommen, darum nutze ich das aus und wir haben eine tolle Chemie zusammen.


Wie ist es, ein Teil von „Refuse / Resist“ zu sein, einem All time Classic Metal Song?


Es ist so krank! Dieser Song ist so irre. Ich bin froh, dass mein Vater verrückt genug war, meinen Herzschlag während der Geburt aufzunehmen! Ich habe gehört, dass der Arzt ziemlich sauer war.


Wie ist es als Sohn des legendären Max Cavalera aufzuwachsen?


Es ist einfach witzig. Ich bin gesegnet, dass mir das Leben solche tollen Eltern beschert hat.


Also, deine Mutter ist ja die Bandmanagerin – du hast also auf Tour deine Eltern immer bei dir. Ist das nicht irgendwie seltsam?


Würdest du es seltsam finden, wenn deine Mutter deine Managerin wäre? Haha… Tja, für mich ist es nicht seltsam. Es ist witzig, die ganze Familie um sich zu haben, aber es gibt definitiv Momente, an denen ich meine Crazyness etwas zurückschraube, eben weil meine Eltern mit dabei sind.


Wann hast du angefangen Schlagzeug zu spielen?


Naja, die Legenden erzählen, dass ich schon auf Polster und Töpfe mit den Drumsticks schlug, bevor ich überhaupt reden konnte, aber wirklich zu lernen habe ich begonnen, als ich 17 war oder so.


Was sind deine Vorbilder, wenn es ums Schlagzeugspielen geht und welche Bands / Drummer beeinflussen dich?


Albert Einstein. Seine Lebensweise und die Liebe zum Wissen bewundere ich sehr, und er bumste Marilyn Monroe. Man kann alles erreichen, wenn man nur hart genug daran arbeitet. Bands die mich beeinflussen sind z.B. BAD BRAINS, BLACK SABBATH, LED ZEPPELIN, AT THE DRIVE IN, FAITH NO MORE.




Deine andere Band, LODY KONG, touren gerade mit Soulfly – ist es anstrengend für dich zweimal n einem Abend zu performen?

Tja, es war anfangs schon ein gewaltiger Unterschied, wenn man körperlich so beansprucht wird, aber wenn du einmal die Bühne betreten hast, dann denkst du an den ganzen Kram nicht mehr. Ich bin begeistert, dass ich so viel auf einer Tour spielen kann. Das hat mir auch viel Selbstvertrauen gegeben.


Was für einen Song auf dem Album magst du am meisten und warum?


Mein Favorit ist „Master Of Savegery“, weil er einen großartigen Groove hat. Terry Date hat einen großartigen Job gemacht und jeden Instrumentensound exquisit werden lassen. Es gibt einen superschweren Teil, bei dem ich es gar nicht erwarten kann, ihn live zu spielen. Dieser Song hat auch ein cooles Outro.

MAX – ENGLISH VERSION

Hi Max“ How are you and what are you up to at the moment?


You just finished the recordings of “Savages”. What can you tell me about the songwriting and production process? Did you do anything different than before? Any special / funny things that occurred?


I work on the songs at home. First I write the main riffs of the album, then I jammes with Zyon and created the whole songs. It was a killer process. the Album was produced by Terry Date. I wanted to work with Terry for a long time. He’s super professional and the sound of the album is amazing.


After your previous brief official cooperations with Zyon, how was it to be working with your own son on an entire album and to be touring with him?


It was great. I worked really hard with Zyon. Almost like five hours straight each day, jamming and writing the new songs.


Also, thinking 20 years back when Zyon’s heartbeat was featured as the intro for “Refuse / Resist” and now having him following his fathers footseps – I bet it makes you proud as hell. What are your feelings when it comes to this?


It’s super special. I am very proud of him and his brother doing LODY KONG and I think Zyon is a hell of a drummer.


You’ve got some illustrious guest vocalists on the new album. How did this come about? Did you chose each and every one of them specifically or did it just “happen”?


Neil from CLUTH, I wrote the song especially for him. It’s got a cowboy metal beginning. “Fallen” features Jamie from one of my favorite bands I DECLARE WAR. His voice is deeper than hell. Mitch from NAPALM DEATH is an old friend. He changed Zyon’s diapers when Zyon was a baby and he’s got a killer vocal style, a crazy high pitch voice and then there’s My son, Igor, on “Bloodshed” which came out killer and Tony singing in Spanish on “EL COMEGENTEM”, a song about a Venezuelan cannibal serial killer.


There are a lot of strong song titles on the album, some really stick out though. “Cannibal Holocaust” for instance. Is this song tied to the movie or what is it about?


It’s all connected to the title of the album, “Savages”, but of course I’ve seen the “Cannibal Holocaust” film. It is fucking great.


The other one that really caught my attention was “Ayatollah Of Rock n Rolla” – please let us know what this song is about.


It’s a line from “Mad Max II”, and I always loved it. The sound of “Ayatollah Of Rock n Rolla”, the ruler of the wasteland.


What is your personal favorite track on the album and why?


“Bloodshed”. I love the opening riff and the melody on the chorus.


Is there a concept behind the album title? The song titles seem to suggest so…


A bit of a concept. “Savages”, the state of the human condition today.


What can you tell us about the artwork and what’s behind it?


It’s a tribal skull. Paul Stottler is designing. Paul’s done some great artwork for “SACRED REICH, especially “Surf Nicaragua”.


What is Igor up to these days and what are your plans for CAVALERA CONSPIRACY?


CAVALERA CONSPIRACY will have a third album next year. It’s gonna be sick and fast.


After this summer’s festivals and club shows, when will you be back with a European “Savages” tour?


Yes, it’s gonna be a “Savages” world tour.


How often does it happen for you guys to be “randomly searched” and profiled at airports… what do you tell the officials and how do they react when they find out you guys are fuckin’ rock stars?


It sucks we get searched all the time, even when they recognize me I still get searched. It’s a waste of time. My party days are over!



ZYON - ENGLISH VERSION

Hi Zyon, hope you’re doing great! What are you up to at the moment?

I am feeling great! I just got to Europe and am fired up to play some of these crazy shows.


From heartbeat to drumbeat ;) How does it feel or what is it like to be making music with your father?


It is so epic. There’s not many kids that get the chance so I take advantage of it, plus we have great chemistry.


What is it like to know to be a part of “Refuse / Resist”, one of metal’s all time classic songs?


It’s sick! That song is rad. I’m blessed my dad was crazy enough to think of that idea to record my heartbeat while my mom was giving birth! I heard the doctor was pissed.


How is it being / growing up as the son of the legendary Max Cavalera anyway?


It’s so much fun. I’m just blessed life has given me two very awesome parents!


Also – your mother is the band’s manager – so on tour you have your parents around you all the time. Is this kinda weird? ;)


Would it be weird if your mom was your manager? Haha… Well it’s not weird for me. It’s fun to have all the family around, but there’s definitely times I hold back my crazyness because my parents are there.


When did you start playing drums?


Well legend has it I was always hitting pillows and pots with drumsticks before I could talk, but I started learning for real when I was like 17.


Who’s your role model if it comes to drumming and what bands / drummers influenced you?

Albert Einstein. His work ethic and love for knowledge I admired a lot, and he shagged Marilyn Monroe. You can do whatever if you work hard enough. BAD BRAINS, BLACK SABBATH, LED ZEPPELIN, AT THE DRIVE IN, FAITH NO MORE.


Your other band, LODY KONG, are currently also touring with SOULFLY – is it tough for you to performing twice every night?


Well, it was different at first playing that much physically, but ones you hit the stage you forget about all that stuff, I’m stoked also to know I can play that much a night for a whole tour. It gave me a lot of confidence.


What’s your favorite song on the new album and why?


My favorite song is “Master Of Savegery”, because it has great groove. Terry Date did a great job making every instrument sound exquisite. There is a super heavy part that I can’t wait to play live. Also, it has a cool sounding outro.
