Ich starte mal damit, dass ich feststellen muss, dass wenn man ein bahnbrechendes Ding im Bereich des Melodic Death Subgenres erwartet, hier schon zu lesen aufhören kann. Aber wenn man etwas ziemlich Aggressives und Dunkles vom neuen MORS SUBITA Album erwartet, dann kann man getrost weiterlesen.
Doch zum Anfang mal ein paar trockene aber interessante Fakten für Nerds: “Das Album wurde im legendären Tico Tico Studio in Kemi mit Ahti Kortelainen (KALMAH, IMPALED NAZARENE, SENTENCED) mit zusätzlichen Arrangements im Demolition Center in Oulu von Mika Lammassaari aufgenommen.“ Der Bandname ist lateinische für `Sudden death / Plötzlicher Tod`

Ich muss ganz ehrlich zugeben, vor diesem Album habe ich mich noch nicht mit MORS SUBITA beschäftigt, bis ich ein Reaction Video zur ersten Single des Albums, „As Humanity Weeps“ vom Reaction Channel „A&P-Reacts“ sah, dass mich aufhorchen ließ. Eine Mischung aus THE HAUNTED, alten ARCH ENEMY und ein bisschen MNEMIC, was keine schlechte Kombination ist.

Im Vergleich zum typischen Death Metal, bieten MORS SUBITA die bisher aggressivste Art, ohne ihren Style in eine pure Form des Death Metal zu ändern. Während des ganzen Albums zeigen sich MORS SUBITA mal mehr und mal weniger melodisch. Zu den weniger melodieverliebten Tracks gehören unter anderem „Alas“ und „I, God“, die sehr intensiv rüberkommen. Der Titeltrack „Into The Pitch Black“ zum Beispiel ist dafür weniger brutal. Mir persönlich liegen diese Tracks mehr als die heftigeren, aber das Album hat im Ganzen keine Schwachstellen. Und mir gefällt, dass es ehrlich und kompromisslos rüberkommt. Sie schaffen es, eine Balance zwischen heavy und melodisch herzustellen. Profitieren würde das Album nur von dynamischeren Vocals, aber die passen trotzdem wunderbar zu den instrumentellen Stil.

Mit diesem Album haben MORS SUBITA ohne Zweifel klargestellt, dass sie gekommen sind um zu bleiben und sich in ihrer ganz eigenen Nische im Melodic Death Metal Subgenre sehr wohl fühlen. Und was dem Longplayer an Variation fehlt, machen sie es mit ihrer Aggression und Kompromisslosigkeit wieder wett. „Into The Pitch Black“ wird ihre Fanbase definitiv nicht enttäuschen und ich freue mich schon, in Zukunft mehr von MORS SUBITA zu hören.

Let’s start by stating that, if you expect a ground-breaking thing within the melodic death metal subgenre, you might as well quit reading. But if you expect some pretty aggressive, dark stuff from Mors Subita’s third album, I invite you to keep on reading this review.

Some dry, but interesting facts for nerds: “The album was recorded at the legendary Tico Tico Studio in Kemi with Ahti Kortelainen (Kalmah, Impaled Nazarene, Sentenced) with additional arrangements recorded at the Demolition Center in Oulu by Mika Lammassaari.“ (source: hearthemusic.de). The name of the band is latin for “sudden death”.

I must admit, prior to this album I didn’t know of the existence of Mors Subita. It was not until I saw a reaction video of the band’s first single of this album “As Humanity Weeps” by the reaction channel “A&P-Reacts”, that I was made aware. To me they are a mixture of The Haunted, old Arch Enemy, and some Mnemic. Which is not a bad combination at all.

Amongst all the melodic death music I’ve ever listened to, Mors Subita provides the most aggressive form I have probably heard, without changing their style to a purer form of death metal. Throughout the album, Mors Subita always keeps it more or less melodic. The lesser melodic songs would be “Alas” and “I, God”, which I really find highly intense. The title track “Into The Pitch Black”, for instance, is more melodic, and less brutal. On a personal note, I tend to lean more towards the melodic songs than the brutal ones, but the album doesn’t really have any weak spots. And I appreciate it for being honest and uncompromising in it’s form. In a way, Mors Subita balance well between being melodic and being aggressive and brutal. The album itself, however, would have benefited more if the vocal was more dynamic, but as the voice is presented, it fits well with their overall instrumental style.

With this album, Mors Subita declares in with no doubt that the band is here to stay, and that they are comfortable in their niche within the melodic death metal subgenre. Where the album lacks in variation, it makes up for in aggression and being uncompromising. “Into The Pitch Black” will certainly not disappoint their fan base, and personally I look forward to follow Mors Subita in their journey to the future.
