Eigentlich bin ich ein großer Fan des New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, oder wie ich es gerne nenne, Classical Metal, also könnt ich euch vorstellen, wie ich mich darüber freue, ein Album zu reviewen, das in diese Kategorie fällt. Ich habe mich dann gefragt, ob es um eine alteingesessene Band, wie auch RAVAGE, die in den 80ern gegründet wurde und immer noch die Ausdauer hat um bis jetzt neue Arbeiten zu veröffentlichen geht, oder ob es eine komplett neu gegründete Band ist. Und ersteres stellte sich als richtig heraus. DESOLATION ANGELS gründeten sich 1981, aber brachten ihr erstes Full lengh Werk erst 1986 auf den Markt. So zog es sie dann 1987-1988 nach Los Angeles, Kalifornien, bis sie schließlich in den frühen 90ern wieder nach England gingen und sich im Mai 1994 trennten. Nach 18 Jahren Abwesenheit feierten sie dann 2012 ihr Comeback.

„King“ ist nun ihr drittes Album und es geht gleich von Anfang an so richtig los! „Doomsday“ punktet mit heavy Riffs, unterbitterlichem Drumming und hohen Tonlagen. Mit anderen Worten, das erste Lied des Albums setzt den Einsatz schon mal sehr hoch! Erwähnenswert ist, dass die Vocals mich etwas an DIAMOND HEAD erinnern. „Devil Sent“ ist der erste von vier Songs, der die Sechs-Minuten-Marke überschreitet, und mir gefällt durchaus, was ich höre. Etwas tiefer und doomig, aber dennoch mit einem klaren klassischen Metal-Feeling und der Gesang klingt äußerst gequält. Ich kann mich nicht entscheiden, ob ich „Rotten To The Core“ oder „Your Blackened Heart“ am besten finde, also empfehle ich beide. Der erste ist etwas langsamer ausgefallen, hat aber dieses Singalong-Feeling. Letzterer ist dann wieder schneller und sehr getrieben, was mir wirklich gefällt.

„Find Your Life“ entpuppt sich als Album-Ballade und für mich mitunter der schwächste Song des Albums. Nicht schlecht, aber kommt nicht an die anderen Songs heran. Genauso geht es mir mit „Sky Of Pain“, der auch irgendwie nach Ballade klingt, aber verzweifelter anmutet – ein frustrierendes Gefühl in sich tragend, etwas, was die Band wirklich gut rüberbringt. Und es ist mir auch irgendwie klar, dass es niemals softe Balladen dieser Band geben wird.

Fazit: Wenn ich es nicht besser wüsste, würde ich denken, ich hätte gerade ein Album gehört, das in den 80ern aufgenommen wurde. Wenn man das Gefühl von klassischem Metal sucht, ist man mit „King“ genau richtig beraten. Ich muss noch in ihre anderen Alben reinhören, aber ich glaube, dass beide einen Versuch wert sind. So wie DESOLATION ANGELS auf „King“ klingen, erinnern sie mich an Bands wie DIAMOND HEAD, SAXON und SAINT VITUS. Dieses Album ist alles in allem musikalisch top, mit ein paar kleineren Schwachstellen, besonders der Track „Find Your Life“. Die Vocals könnten meiner Meinung nach vielleicht auch verbessert werden. Ansonsten habe ich „King“ aber sehr genossen. Probiert es aus!

Normally I am a big fan of New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, or as I like to call it, Classical Metal, so you can imagine that I was excited to be allowed to review an album that fit into that category of metal. I still wondered if this is a band that, along with bands like Ravage, was founded in the 80s, but still had the stamina to release new stuff even to this date, or if this was a completely new band. The former proved to be true. Desolation Angels was formed all the way back in 1981, but had their first full-length in 1986. The band relocated to Los Angeles, California in 1987-88. They eventually returned to England in the early ’90s before splitting up in May, 1994. After 18 years absence the band made their comeback in 2012.

“KING” is their third full-length album, and it is up to a headbanging start! “Doomsday” has got the heavy riffs, the relentless drumming and the high pitch vocals. In other words, the album’s first song set the stakes very high! Worth mentioning, the vocal reminds me somewhat of DIAMOND HEAD. “Devil Sent” is the first of four songs surpassing the six minute mark, and I do like what I hear. Somewhat down-laid and doomy, but still with a clear classical metal feel to it. The vocal is a voice of agony. I cannot decide if I like “Rotten To The Core” or “Your Blackened Heart” best, so I go for them both. The first one is more down-laid in tempo, but has got that sing-along feel. The latter is way faster, and very driven, something I know to enjoy.

“Find Your Life” is the album’s ballad, and to me the weakest song of them all. Not bad, but does not live up to the other songs. Also “Sky Of Pain” could be said to be a ballad of sorts, but is still sounding better and more desperate – a frustration feeling, something this band does very well. It is clear to me that there will be no soft love ballads from this band, ever.

Conclusion: If I didn’t know better, I’d think I’d just listened to an album recorded in the 80s. If you are looking for the feeling of classical metal you need look no further than “King”. I have yet to check out their other full-lengths, but I believe both of them will be worth a try. The way Desolation Angels sounds on “King” they remind me of bands like DIAMOND HEAD, SAXON and SAINT VIRUS. This album is all in all a very well performed one, with a couple of weak spots, especially “Find Your Life”. The vocal could maybe be improved as well. Apart from that I enjoyed “King” very much. Give it a go!
