Nur etwa ein Jahr nachdem die Band “In His Infernal Majesty´s Service” veröffentlichte, sind WITCHERY wieder zurück mit dem brandneuen, siebten Studioalbum namens “I Am Legion”. Es scheint, als ob die Mitglieder ihre sechsjährige Pause zwischen “Hexenkrieg” und “In His Infernal Majesty´s Service” wieder gutmachen wollten. Da ich ihr letztes Album sehr genossen habe, frage ich mich jetzt natürlich, ob “I Am Legion” da mithalten kann.

“Legion” ist der erste Track, der als Intro zum zweiten Song “True North” führt (auch die erste Single des Albums mitsamt YouTube-Video). Das Intro selbst kann als gelungen bezeichnet werden, das Problem jedoch, zumindest für mich, ist der Übergang von diesem zum nächsten Song. Wo ein glatter Übergang stattfinden sollte, kommt es brutal zum Stillstand, was nicht ganz durchdacht kligt, was aber nur ein kleines Detail sein soll.

Die folgenden drei Songs wurden bereits vorab veröffentlicht, darunter “True North”, ein ziemlich unheimlich klingendes Stück, das abwechslungsreich und nach vorne marschiernd daher kommt und euch, bevor ihr es noch bemerkt, zu “Welcome Night” leitet. Ein starker blackmetallischer Song, mit Down-Tuning und vom Text her an KING DIAMOND erinnernd. Der Track enthält auch eine kurze, sich perfekt einfügende Rede. Der dritte Track nennt sich “Of Blackened Wing” der nach einem gemächlichen Start das Tempo voll aufdreht. Ein sehr feiner Thrash-Metal-Song mit rauen Vocals. So weit, so gut.

Nicht viele Bands bedienen sich der ägyptischen Mythologie, aber WITCHERY bringt auch dieses Thema mit dem Lied “Amun-Ra” auf den Tisch, das sich auch als mein Lieblings-Stück entpuppt. Ein wahrhaft schwarzes Thrash-Meisterwerk. “Amun-Ra” und der folgende Track “Seraphic Terror” sind die schnellsten Songs auf diesem Album, lassen dem Hörer keine Sekunde zum Verschnaufen und erinnern an Bands wie SODOM, OVERKILL und THE HAUNTED. “A Faustian Deal”, der nächste Track nach “Seraphic Terror”, ist der melodischste von allen und gibt dem Album insgesamt mehr Abwechslung. WITCHERY runden das Ganze dann noch mit “The Alchemist” ab. Diejenigen, die geduldig genug sind, erwartet dann sogar eine Überraschung am Ende des Songs.

WITCHERYs siebter Studio-Release liefert wirklich ab, besonders für Fans des Thrash und Black Metal. Ich gehe sogar so weit und sage, dass “I Am Legion” eine Spur besser als das letztjährige Werk ausgefallen ist. Nur drei kleine Beschwerden: Der abrupte Übergang zwischen dem Intro und dem ersten regulären Track, der unnötige Song “Dry Bones”, und die etwas magere Abwechslung im Gesang von Emperor Magus Caligula.

Only about a year after the band released “In His Infernal Majesty’s Service”, WITCHERY is once more back with a brand new studio album, their seventh in total, called “I Am Legion”. It seems the members wanted to make amends for their six year pause between “Witchkrieg” and “In His Infernal Majesty’s Service”. I really enjoyed their album from last year, so this beg to question if “I Am Legion” can match it? Read on.

“Legion” is the first song out, as an intro leading to the first regular song of the album called “True North” (also the album’s first single and YouTube video). The intro itself is more than fine, the problem however, at least for me, is the transition from this one to the next. Where it should have glided smoothly it instead comes to a brutal halt, and it does not sound well thought through. But that’s just a minor detail.

The following three songs are the ones the band released prior to the album itself, including “True North”, a rather sinister sounding call with good varieties in it along with a marching tempo, which before you know it turns you over to “Welcome Night”, a more blackened influenced song, with quite a lot of down tuning, with a topic reminding the reviewer of KING DIAMOND. This track also includes a short speech, which fits just fine. The third one’s called “Of Blackened Wing”, and after a slow tempo start, the band turns the tempo right up. A most fine thrash metal song, with a raspy vocal. So far, so good.

Not many bands dwell in Egyptian Mythology, but WITCHERY brings also this to the table with the song “Amun-Ra”, which also happens to be my favourite track. It’s a truly blackened thrash masterpiece. Both “Amun-Ra” and the following track “Seraphic Terror” are the fastest songs on this album. Not letting go of the listener for one second, and which could be compared to bands like SODOM, OVERKILL and THE HAUNTED. “A Faustian Deal”, which comes after “Seraphic Terror” is the most melodic of them all, and gives more variety to the album as a whole. WITCHERY rounds it up with “The Alchemist”. And for those patient enough, it awaits a surprise at the end of the song.

The band’s seventh studio release really delivers the goods, especially if you’re a fan of thrash and black metal. I would go so far to say that this is a bit better than their album from last year. Only three complaints: The transition between the first and second track, the somewhat unnecessary song “Dry Bones”, and the somewhat lack of vocal variety.
