GRIMNER sind seit zehn Jahren in Sachen Folk Metal aktiv, aber vielleicht noch nicht so bekannt, wie andere skandinavische Bands dieses Genres. Dabei liefern die Schweden mitreißende Shows ab und veröffentlichten auch bereits drei Alben, zuletzt das wirklich gelungene „Vanadrottning“. Im Herbst steht auch eine große Tour an mit KALEVALA, die auch nach Wien führen wird, an. GRIMNER werden dort die Bühnenbretter zum Erbeben bringen. Wir hatten nun die Gelegenheit, dem Showman und Flötisten der Gruppe Johan Rydberg einige Fragen rund um das neue Album, das Feeling bei Live-Shows und die Wichtigkeit der Nordischen Mythologie für ihre Musik zu stellen.


Hallo! Das erste Mal, dass ich euch auf der Bühne gesehen habe, war am Ragnarök Festival 2016. Es war ein wirklich großartiger Auftritt und alle Leute gingen voll mit. Wie war es für euch?


Hi! Es war wirklich toll! Wir hatten davor schon ein paar kleine Festivals gespielt, aber dies war das erste wirklich große Festival für uns. Es war großartig, auf einem der beliebtesten Folk Metal-orientierten Festivals zu sein.




Ich sah euch dieses Jahr erneut auf dem Ragnarök Festival. Warum habt ihr euch entschieden, zu diesem Ort zurückzukehren?


Nun, es ist ein großartiges Festival mit einem wirklich großen Publikum. Und als wir die Gelegenheit hatten wiederzukommen, war das nichts, worüber wir nachdenken mussten. Wir würden wahrscheinlich jedes Jahr dort spielen wenn wir könnten, aber die Veranstalter neigen dazu, ein oder zwei Jahre Pause zwischen den gleichen Bands zu machen, haha.


Ihr tragt auf der Bühne sehr alt aussehende Kleidung! Wer hat die für euch gemacht?


Einige davon sind gekauft, aber viele davon sind von mir und Freunden und der Familie der Band gemacht. Ich mache viele der Leder- und Eisenteile, die wir auf der Bühne verwenden. Hehe, ja, einige davon scheinen auch ein bisschen alt und zerfetzt zu wirken. Das liegt hauptsächlich daran, dass wir sie schon so lange auf der Bühne verwenden, wodurch die Kleidungsstücke auseinanderzufallen beginnen.


Und eure Gesichter sind angemalt! Gibt es eine besondere Bedeutung hinter diesen Farben?


Ja, das sind sie! Nicht wirklich, wir haben uns selbst entschieden, welche Farben wir wie tragen wollen. Obwohl jeder von uns eine Figur darstellt, die das „Warpaint“ ein wenig beeinflussen soll.


Jetzt zu eurer Musik! Wie habt ihr zusammen gefunden und welche Geschichte steckt hinter dem Bandnamen?


Die Band wurde von Ted und Henry gegründet, als sich ihre vorherige Band auflöste. Sie spielten melodischen Death Metal, aber Ted steuerte bereits auf die folkigen Einflüsse zu. Also haben sie stattdessen mit GRIMNER begonnen. Die Band hatte im Laufe der Jahre einige Veränderungen in der Besetzung, und es gibt ziemlich unterschiedliche Gründe zwischen den Leuten, wie und warum sie der Band beigetreten sind. Aber ich denke, der Hauptgrund war die Heimatstadt der Band Motala und die angrenzenden Städte.

Der Name GRIMNER kommt aus einer Geschichte der nordischen Mythologie, wo Odin unter den Sterblichen wandelte und sich Grimner nannte.


Ihr habt ein neues Album namens "Vanadrottning" auf dem Markt! Was ist die Geschichte hinter diesem Titel und dem Album?


Anders als "Frost Mot Eld" ist "Vanadrottning" kein Konzeptalbum, sondern enthält einzelne Tracks mit eigenem Sound und Thema. Aber was den Titeltrack "Vanadrottning" betrifft, so erzählt das Lied von einem der früheren Ereignisse in der nordischen Mythologie. Das Lied erzählt von dem Leiden und Wehklagen von Gullveig, einer Hexe, die aber auch die Königin der Vanir war, einer anderen Götterfamilie als den Asen-Göttern.
Die beiden Götterfamilien kämpften in einem großen Krieg, in dem Gullveig schließlich von den Asen gefangen wurde. Sie wurde dann verurteilt, und sollte auf dem Scheiterhaufen verbrannt werden. Aber nachdem sie verbrannt wurde, wurde sie aus der Asche wiedergeboren und deshalb erneut zum Tode verurteilt.
Und so wurde Gullveig dreimal verbrannt und wiedergeboren, bis sich die beiden Familien auf einen Waffenstillstand zwischen den Familien einigten.
Deshalb zeigt das Artwork für das Album eine neu geborene Gullveig in der Asche des Scheiterhaufens.




Wo findet ihr die Inspiration für eure Songs?


Musikalisch werden wir inspiriert von Bands, die wir gehört haben als wir aufgewachsen sind, aber auch Folkmusik und Mythologie.
Und wenn es um die Texte geht, sind wir hauptsächlich von Mythologie und Geschichte beeinflusst. Aber wir haben auch begonnen, skandinavische Folklore in einige Songs einzubauen.


Wie stark beeinflusst euer Heimatland und seine Geschichte eure Musik?


Ziemlich stark, hauptsächlich in den oben erwähnten Texten.


Was sind für euch die interessantesten Punkte in der schwedischen Geschichte?


Es gibt viele verschiedene historische Ereignisse, die auf ihre Art interessant sind. Alt und neu. Aber für uns als Band ist die interessanteste Ära die Wikingerzeit und die Eisenzeit.


Ihr verwendet immer die schwedische Sprache! Habt ihr nie daran gedacht, die englische Sprache zu benutzen, dass euch mehr Leute verstehen können?


Das ist eine Frage, die wir oft gestellt bekommen. Und die schnelle Antwort darauf ist: Nein. Bevor Ted und Henry GRIMNER gründeten, sang ihre vorherige Band auf Englisch. Und auf der ersten EP "A Call For Battle" gab es ein paar Lieder, die auf Englisch gesungen wurden. Aber sie wechselten ziemlich schnell zu Schwedisch. Für eine Folk Metal-Band ist es üblich, in ihrer Muttersprache zu singen, was oft zu ihren Gunsten funktioniert. Für uns wäre es ein bisschen komisch, alle Namen und Orte aus der Mythologie von denen wir singen, zu übersetzen. Wir haben alle unsere Texte in Englisch auf unserer Webseite. Wenn sich jemand also wirklich in den Text vertiefen will, kann man sie dort finden.


Ihr werdet dieses Jahr auf mehreren Festivals spielen! Auf welches Konzert freut ihr euch am meisten?


Ja, wir haben ja schon bei einigen wie dem Ragnarök und dem Hammerfest gespielt. Im Moment freuen wir uns auf das Wave Gotik Treffen, das sehr interessant werden wird.


Im Herbst werdet ihr mit KALEVALA auf große Tour gehen - wir werden uns dort sehen! Kennt ihr diese Band und was erwartet ihr von dieser Tour?


Großartig, ich freue mich darauf, dich dort zu sehen! Wir haben KALEVALA noch nicht kennengelernt, deshalb wird es interessant, mit ihnen auf Tour zu gehen. Nun, es wird die längste Tour sein, die wir bisher gemacht haben. Es wird also interessant sein zu sehen, wie es funktioniert. Aber wir hoffen, dass wir während der Tour viele neue Fans treffen können.


Gibt es einen besonderen Ort, an dem ihr einen Gig spielen möchtet?


Nun, natürlich würden wir gerne beim Wacken spielen, das ist eines der Hauptziele für viele Bands, haha. Aber es wäre auch cool, beim 70 000 Tons of Metal oder einer anderen Kreuzfahrt zu spielen.
Auch ein Besuch auf einem anderen Kontinent würde Spaß machen.


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Im Moment, dieses Jahr mit Touren zu beenden, und danach werden wir wahrscheinlich beginnen, am nächsten Album zu arbeiten.

Thank you for the possibility to ask you some questions!
First time I´ve seen you on stage was at Ragnarök festival 2016. It was a really great gig and all the people were with you. How was it for you?


Hi, you are very welcome!
It was really great! We had played a few small festivals before, but this was the first really big festival we had played. Being at one of the most popular folk metal oriented festivals.


I saw you again this year at Ragnarök festival. Why did you decide to come back to this place?


Well, it is a great festival with a really great audience. And when we got the chance to come back it was nothing to think about. We would probably play there every year if we could, but they tend to want a year or two in between the same bands, haha.


You wear on stage very ancient-looking clothes! Who made these for you?


Some of it is bought, but a lot of it is made by me and friends and family of the band. I make a lot of the leather and iron parts we use on stage. Hehe yeah some of it is starting to look a bit ancient and tattered as well. This is mainly because they have been used for so long on stage now that the clothes start to fall apart.


And your faces are painted! Is there a special meaning behind these paints?


Yes they are! Not really, we have decided ourselves how we want to wear the paint. Although we do kind of have a character each that might influence the warpaint a bit.


Now to your music! How did you find together and what is the story behind the band-name?


The band was formed by Ted and Henry when their previous band broke up. They were playing melodic death metal, but Ted was already steering towards the more folky influences. So they started GRIMNER instead. The band had some changes in the lineup during the years and it’s quite different from person to person how and why they joined the band. But I guess, the main part was the band’s hometown of Motala and the adjacent cities.

The name GRIMNER comes from a story in Norse mythology, where Odin walked among the mortals and called himself Grimner.


You released a new album named “Vanadrottning”! What is the story behind this title and the album?


Unlike “Frost mot Eld”, “Vanadrottning” is not a concept album, but rather have individual tracks with their own sound and theme. But as for the title track “Vanadrottning” the song tells of one of the earlier events in Norse mythology. The song tells about the suffering and lamentation of Gullveig, a witch but also the queen of the Vanir, another family of gods than the aesir gods.
The two families of gods fought in a great war where in the end Gullveig was captured by the aesir. She was then sentenced to be burned at the stakes. But after she was burned she was reborn from the ashes, and therefore sentenced to death once more.
And so Gullveig was burned and reborn three times until the two families instead settled for a truce between the families.

And thus the artwork for the album depicts a newly reborn Gullveig in the ashes of the pyre.


Where do you find the inspiration for your songs?


Musically we are inspired by bands we have listened to growing up, but also folkmusik and mythology.
And when it comes to the lyrics we are mainly influenced by mythology and history. But we have also started use Scandinavian folklore in some songs.


How much influences your home-country and its history your music?


Quite a lot, mainly in the lyrics as mentioned above.


What are the most interesting points in Swedish history for you?


There are a lot of different historical events that are interesting in their own ways. Both old and new. But for the band the most interesting era is the Viking age and iron age.


You always use the Swedish language! Did you never think about using the English language, that more people can understand you?


This is a question we get often. And the quick answer is, no. Before Ted and Henry started GRIMNER, their previous band sang in english. And for the first Ep “A Call For Battle” there a few songs that was sung in English. But they switched to Swedish quite quickly. For a folk metal band it is quite common to sing in their native language, and it often works in their favour. For us it would be a bit weird to translate all the names and places we sing about from the mythology. We have all our lyrics in English on our webpage, so if you really want to get into the lyrics, you can always find them there.


You will play at several festivals this year! What gig are you most looking forward to?


Yes we have actually played a couple already like Ragnarök and Hammerfest. At the moment we are looking forward to Wave Gotik Treffen, which is going to be very interesting.


In autumn you will go on a big tour with KALEVALA – I will see you in Vienna. Do you know this band, and what are your expectations to this tour?


Great, looking forward to see you there! We have not met the band before, so it is going to be interesting going on tour with them. Well, it is going to be the longest tour we have done so far. So just that is going to be interesting to see how it works out. But we hope to be able to meet a lot of new fans during the tour.


Is there a special place where you want to play a gig?


Well, of course we would like to play at Wacken, that’s kind of one of the main goal for a lot of bands, haha. But it would also be cool to play at 70 000 tons of metal or another cruise like that.
Also visiting another continent would be fun.


What are your plans for the future?


At the moment finishing this year of touring, and probably start working on the next album.
