An einem sonnigen Sonntagnachmittag am Tuska Open Air haben wir Henrik „Henkka“ Klingenberg, den Keyboarder von SONATA ARCTICA und Gitarrist Elias Viljanen Backstage getroffen und für euch interviewt. Es sind nur noch wenige Stunden bis zu ihrem Auftritt auf der Tent Stage und wir haben gefragt wie es so ist in einer der populärsten finnischen Metal Bands zu spielen.


Was ist euer bester Song aus dem Live Set?


Henkka: Der Wodka Song, den wir immer zum Schluss jeder Show spielen.

Elias: Wir spielen ein paar Songs aus dem neuen Album, vielleicht zwei oder drei. Es ist immer gut neue Songs zu spielen. Aber ich denke die alten Songs sind mehr… die Leute lieben sie, sie hatten Zeit sie anzuhören und zu lernen, aber auch die schnelleren Sachen, wie „Don’t Say A Word” sind gut, um sie live zu spielen.




Was ist euer Lieblingslied aus dem neuen Album?


Henkka: Ich sage immer, dass mein Favorit „We Are What We Are” ist, auch wenn es eine Ballade ist, aber ich denke der Song verbreitet eine gute Stimmung. Aber auch „White Pearl, Black Oceans Part II “,ist ziemlich gut.


Vor der Tour hat Tony in einem anderen Interview gemeint, dass „Fairytale“ der beste Livesong werden wird. Denkt ihr das auch?


Henkka: Nein, aber er mag den Song. Er ist okay, aber für mich ist er etwas.. er hat ein gutes Gitarrensolo und ich liebe es Solos wie dieses zu spielen. Ich denke, dass ich ein paar andere Songs lieber mag. Das ist meistens so, aber das ist nur meine Meinung.


Was ist also dein Lieblings Live Song?


Henkka: „Full Moon“, natürlich, der ist geil zu spielen.

Elias: Ich weiß nicht, bei mir kommt das immer auf den Tag an. Ich denke mir "Okay, was wäre heute lustig zu Spielen?"


Wieso hat Tony diesen Laserschwert Mikrofonständer auf der Bühne?


Henkka: Yeah, ich weiß nicht. Ich glaube er denkt es sieht gut aus, also wollte er ihn haben.

Elias: Ich finde das Licht sieht ziemlich gut aus, wenn es dunkel ist.


Ist es für euch anders, wenn ihr in eurem Heimatland spielt, als irgendwo sonst auf der Welt?


Henkka: Ja das würde ich schon sagen, man hat irgendwie ein anderes Gefühl… vielleicht deine Freunde oder irgendjemand sieht aus wie dein Cousin oder so was in der Art. Das Spielen selbst unterscheidet sich nicht, aber man hat ein anderes Feeling.

Elias: Man weiß wo alles ist, weil wir in diesen Städten schon so oft waren, man kennt die Plätze und ein paar Leute hier und dort. Das ist der Unterschied, der Auftritt selbst eher nicht.


Zum Start euerer US Tour wurde Tony krank, aber ihr habt trotzdem alle Konzerte gespielt. Könnt ihr selbst entscheiden wann es zu viel wird oder ist es besser die Show zu spielen als alles zu reorganisieren?


Henkka: Ich denke, wenn wir dazu im Stande sind, machen wir es. Es muss schon etwas Schlimmes passieren, um die Show zu streichen. Es gibt ziemlich viel Aufregung wenn wir alles neu organisieren. Wir müssen auch an die Fans denken. Einige fahren ziemlich weit, um die Show zu sehen und sie müssen ihre Termine arrangieren und so weiter. Also streichen wir nicht einfach eine Show, es muss schon einen triftigen Grund geben. Ich denke in den ganzen Jahren haben wir über 1000 Shows gespielt und wir haben vielleicht zehn oder 15 gestrichen, das ist nicht wirklich viel.




Sehr ihr euch in eurer Freizeit auch andere Metal Konzerte an oder zum Beispiel hier am Festival?


Henkka, Elias: Das ist unterschiedlich, dieses Mal haben wir nicht so viel Zeit. Wir spielen jede Woche Shows bis zum September. Ich persönlich möchte eigentlich keine extra Zeit von zu Hause weg bleiben, wenn ich das nicht muss, ich meine es ist mein Job. Es ist schön Freunde zu sehen, wie APOCALYPTICA, aber ich will sie nur treffen und nicht live sehen.


Also welche Metal Band oder Musik hört ihr am meisten?


Henkka: Ich weiß nicht, vielleicht DEEP PURPLE oder FRANK ZAPPA und Sachen die in diese Richtung gehen.

Elias: Ich habe früher viel Trash Metal, wie SLAYER oder METALLICA gehört, aber jetzt höre ich eigentlich nur noch Radio, Rock Radio oder sowas wie das. Es ist nett einen Mix an verschiedenen Arten von Rock Musik zu haben, ich bin glücklich damit.


Wie geht ihr es an, wenn ein neuer Song entsteht?


Henkka: Tony macht ein Demo das wir uns gemeinsam anhören und dann schauen wir was funktioniert und was nicht und spielen das Ganze als Band durch. Manchmal sind die Arrangements im Demo schon komplett fertig und wir spielen den Song so wie er ist und manchmal müssen wir etwas mehr Arbeit hineinstecken. Das hängt vom Song ab, aber es fängt alles an indem Tony Demos schreibt und wir starten dann ab da.

Elias: Ja, wir müssen auch ein bisschen üben, um die Songs zu spielen, aber nur manchmal nicht immer. Hin und wieder haben wir dann auch ein paar Ideen, wenn wir den Song üben oder ein paar alte Ideen, wie man ihn spielen könnte.


Auf den ersten Sonata Alben gab es einige Songs über verlorene Liebe und nun geht das Thema geht in eine andere Richtung, wie unsere Umwelt. Wie seht ihr das?


Henkka: Wir haben keine Ahnung über den Text, wir sind ehrlich. Aber ein paar Songs auf dem neuen Album drehen sich wohl schon um die Umwelt. Aber natürlich gibt es auch noch Liebessongs. Ich denke die meisten unserer Lieder sind über die Liebe in irgendeiner Form.

Elias: Ich weiß nicht was passiert, aber ich denke im neuen Album geht es um die Umwelt, wie du gesagt hast. Wir wissen nicht was das nächste Album bringen wird oder was passiert. Mal sehen.




Wolltet ihr immer in einer Power Metal Band spielen oder wie seid ihr zu SONATA ARCITICA gekommen?


Elias: Ich wollte eigentlich in keiner spielen, aber sie haben mich gefragt und ich sagte ja, weil ich SONATA ARCTICA Fan war, ein bisschen zumindest. Ich habe sonst eigentlich nie viel Power Metal gehört, aber ich habe mir Sonatas "Silence" Album angehört. Ich fand es extrem gut, daher sagte ich natürlich ja als sie mich fragten.

Henkka: Bei mir war es ähnlich. Ich hatte schon im Vorfeld ein paar Songs der Band gehört und wusste, dass sie einen Keyboarder suchen. Ich dachte mir, wenn ich bei der Band bin kann ich herumreisen und Shows in der ganzen Welt spielen. Also ging ich zum Vorspielen und bekam den Job. Ich höre auch nicht viel Power Metal, denn wenn du den ganzen Tag Musik machst, dann willst du am Ende des Tages etwas anderes hören.


Zum Schluss noch eine Frage zu eurem Merch: Seit ihr am kreativen Design Prozess beteiligt oder könnt ihr entscheiden was gedruckt wird?


Henkka: Ja bis zu einem gewissen Grad schon. Es gibt eine Firma und ein paar Künstler mit denen wir arbeiten. Manchmal haben wir eine Idee und sie setzen diese für uns um und sehen ob uns das gefällt. Am Ende entscheiden wir was gedruckt wird und was nicht. Natürlich haben wir keinen Einfluss auf Raubkopien oder dergleichen, aber bei den offiziellen Produkten schon.


Wollt ihr zum Schluss noch etwas zu euren Fans sagen?


Henkka: Yeah, Hallo und bis später.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon at Tuska Open Air we meet Henrik „Henkka“ Klingenberg the Keyboarder from SONATA ARCTICA and his companion Guitarist Elias Viljanen backstage. It is only a few hours until their gig at tent stage and we asked them how it is to play within one of the most popular finish metal bands.


What do you think is the best song from your live set?


Henkka: The Wodka Song, the one we do at last at each show.

Elias: We play a few songs from the new album, maybe two or three or something like that. It´s always nice to play new songs. I think usually the old ones are more…people love them, like they had time to listen to them and learn them, so. But also the faster stuff like “Don’t Say A Word” is good to play live.


Which one is your favourite song from the current album?


Henkka: I always say that my favourite is “We Are What We Are”, even thu it´s a ballad, but I think there is a good mood in that song. Maybe also „White Pearl, Black Oceans Part II “, it is a good one.


Before the tour started Tony mentioned in another interview that “Fairytale” would be the best song to play live. Do you agree with that?


Henkka: No, but he likes that song. It´s ok, but I think for me it´s a kind of…it has a nice guitar solo, I love playing the solos and stuff like this. But I think I enjoy some other songs more. It´s usually that something like that happens. But it is just my opinion, it doesn´t matter.


So which one is your favourite song to play?


Henkka: Full Moon, of course, it is nice to play.

Elias: I don´t know, it depends on the day. Let´s say which one is gonna be fun today.


Why does Tony have this kind of laser sword mic on stage?


Henkka: Yeah, I don´t know. I think he thinks it looks good, so he wanted to have it.

Elias: I suppose it looks really good if the lightening is on when it´s dark.


Is it a different feeling for you when you are playing in your home country than anywhere else?


Henkka: Yes, I would say yes, in some way it´s a different feeling, because you see a lot of…maybe your friends or like everybody looks like your cousin or something like that. The playing itself is not so different from anywhere else but in your home country it´s a different feeling.

Elias: And you know where everything else is. Cause we´ve been to all cities many times before, so you know the places and you know some people here and there. So that´s different, the actual playing is not so different.


At the beginning of your US tour Tony got sick, but you fortunately played all the concerts. So can you decide on yourself when it´s too much or is it better to play the show than to reorganise everything?


Henkka: I think when we are able to play the show then we do it. Because there has to happen something really serious to cancel it. And I think there is also a lot of hazard to rebook it, and stuff. We also have to think about the fans, some have travelled a long way to see that show. People have to arrange their work, and stuff so, and they get up at time to go to the show. So we never cancel very easily, it has to be something really serious for us. I think we have cancelled all over the years…the band has played over 1000 shows and we cancelled maybe 10 or 15, so it´s really not that much.


Do you also see other metal concerts in your spare time or here at the festival?


Henkka, Elias: It depends. This time, we don´t have that much time. We have shows now every week until September. Personally I don´t want to spend any extra time away from home if I don´t have to, it´s my job I mean. It´s fun to see friends of course. Maybe APOCALYPTICA but just to meet them, not to see them playing live.


So which ones are your favourite metal bands or music?


Henkka: I don´t know. Deep Purple, Frank Zappa. Stuff like that.

Elias: I used to listen to Thrash Metal like Slayer, Metallica. I don´t know nowadays, I just listen to radio, like Rock Radio or something like that. It´s a nice mixture of different kinds of rock music, so I am happy with that.


When you create a new song, how does it work for you?


Henkka: Tony usually makes demos and then we listen to them together. And then we see, you know, which ones work and which ones does not and then we start to work on them as a band. Sometimes the arrangements are pretty much torn out already in the demo, so we just play the song and ok this works, let´s leave it like that. And sometimes we have to put a little bit more work into it to change things to make it work. It depends on the song. But it all starts with Tony writing demos and then we take it from there.

Elias: Yes, and we need to practise a little bit to play those songs, sometimes not always, but sometimes. Of course we get some ideas when we start to practise the songs, maybe we get some old ideas of how to play them or something like that.


On the first few Sonata albums a lot of songs were about lost love and now I think the direction has changed a little bit, the theme is going in a different direction, into environment, stuff like this. Do you think that change happened?


Henkka: We have no clue about the lyrics, we are honest. But at last at the new album a few songs are about environment in some way. But there are of course also love songs. I think most of our songs are about love in some way. More or less.

Elias: I don´t know what´s going on, but I suppose that the new album is about environment, stuff like that as you said. We don´t know what the next album will bring, what will happen. Let´s see.


Did you ever want to play in a Power Metal Band or how did you join SONATA ARCITICA?


Elias: I didn’t want to play actually. But they asked me and I had to say yes, because I was a SONATA ARCITICA fan. Just a bit. I don´t listen to Power Metal myself so much. But I listened to Sonatas Silence album. And that was really good for my taste and when they asked me I said yes.

Henkka: For me it was a bit similar. I´ve heard a few songs of the band before and then I saw they were looking for a keyboard player. I thought that when I would join this band, I can travel and play shows all over the world, hopefully. So I went to the audition and got the job. I also don´t listen that much Power Metal, because when you play -melodic metal also- when you play it almost every day and work with it then I would listen to something else when I listen to music for myself.


Another question about your merch: Are you also involved in the designing process or can you decide what is printed on the shirts?


Henkka: To some extend yes. We have a company and we have a couple of graphic artists that we work with. And sometimes an idea comes along, something like this and then we give them advice and see how it works out. In the end we decide which gets printed or which don´t. Of course there´s a lot of pirate stuff like that, where we have no control but with the official merchandise we can decide which designs are going to be printed.


So do you have anything else left to say to your fans?


Henkka: Yeah well, hello and see you later.
