SABATON sind seit einigen Jahren auf sämtlichen Konzertbühnen der Welt Dauergast und füllen mühelos die Hallen. Auch dieses Jahr spielen sie sich quer über den Globus und machten am Tuska Festival in Helsinki Halt, wo wir das Glück hatten und mit den beiden unterhaltsamen Gitarristen Tommy und Chris in einem gemütlichen Eckchen des Backstage Bereiches plaudern durften und einiges über verborgene Künste, schwierige Hits und Disney-Songs von ihnen erfuhren.



Seid ihr schon aufgeregt wegen eurer Show später?


Chris: Total, ich war erst noch extrem müde, habe dann aber ein kurzes Schläfchen gemacht und jetzt ist alles gut.





Sind die Shows mittlerweile Routine für euch?


Chris: Nein. Es wird ein bisschen Routine mit der Zeit, aber das musst du verdrängen. Eine Menge Leute kaufen teilweise ihre Tickets schon ein Jahr im Voraus um eine Band zu sehen und wenn du dann kommst und eine mittelmäßige Show ablieferst, dann denken die sich ja auch „What the fuck!“. Es ist als wenn man in die Oper geht oder so ähnlich, das muss auch jeden Abend spektakulär werden. Und genauso ist es auch bei uns, wir versuchen jeden Abend die beste Show abzuliefern. Auch wenn wir mal krank sind müssen wir das.


Also spielt ihr auch wenn ihr krank seid?


Chris: Ja klar. So vor 3-4 Jahren hatte ich eine beidseitige Lungenentzündung und musste trotzdem auf die Bühne.


Das klingt ja schlimm…


Chris: Ja das ist es auch. Kein Spaß.

Tommy: Letztes oder dieses Jahr in Wien hatte ich so hohes Fieber, dass ich bis zwei Stunden vor der Show geschlafen habe und immer wieder eingeschlafen bin und Chris weckte mich zehn Minuten bevor wir auf die Bühne mussten auf und ich hatte einen Eimer neben mir auf der Bühne, falls ich kotzen müsste.

Chris: Nicht angenehm.


Nein absolut nicht. Also lasst uns zu einem anderen Thema kommen – euer aktuelles Album ist letztes Jahr erschienen, was hat sich seitdem für euch verändert – bis auf das Ausscheiden von Thobbe und dem Einstieg von Tommy?


Chris: Tja, ich bin etwas fetter geworden (lacht).

Tommy: Und ich bin schlanker! Haha!

Chris: Ja genau! Er wurde schlanker! Haha!

Tommy: Ich habe sicher so um die 15 kg abgenommen.

Chris: Tja, ich weiß nicht, ich mache nur Scherze. Es war eine Achterbahnfahrt, wir haben sehr viele Shows gespielt seit dem neuen Album.

Tommy: Wir haben mit zwei Gigs in Polen gestartet, einen in Israel und dann zwei Monate in Nord- und Südamerika, dann kurz nach Hause für acht Tage, dann fast einen Monat durch Russland, wieder nach Hause für eineinhalb Wochen und dann startete schon die dreimonatige Europatour. Dann zwei Wochen Pause und dann sind wir wieder nach Amerika für fünf Wochen, nach Hause für zwei Wochen und jetzt spielen wir die Festivals.


Wow, das sind eine Menge Shows!


Chris: Yeah, ziemlich heavy!


Was wird die nächste Show nach dem Tuska Festival?


Chris: Jetzt nach dem Tuska sind wir mal eine Woche zuhause.

Tommy: Genau, eine Woche nach Hause und dann spielen wir in Spanien.


In unserem letzten Interview letztes Jahr am Summerbreeze Festival, als Thobbe seine letzten Shows spielte, erzählte uns Hannes, dass ihr einen neuen Mann habt, der ein großartiger Gitarrist, Sänger und ein supercooler Typ ist.


Tommy: Wirklich? Cool!

Chris: Wirklich?! Uff! Haha! Nicht zu viel Lob! Sonst kriegt er einen Ego-Boost.




Ja wie denkt ihr denn jetzt über ihn?


Chris: Hahaa! Das möchte ich jetzt nicht dokumentiert haben!


Tja, das ist jetzt zu spät…


Chris: Haha! Nein, er ist ein wirklich verdammt cooler Typ. Wir haben den selben Musikgeschmack. Yeah, wir lieben die selbe Musik und er spielt wie ein Gott und singt fast noch besser.

Tommy: Chris!

Chris: Yeah, ihr müsst sein eigenes Zeug anhören - REINXEED.


Ja, kennen wir sogar, was ist eigentlich mit dieser Band aktuell?


Tommy: Tja, zur Zeit liegt es leider ein bisschen auf Eis wegen offensichtlicher Gründe, aber wir haben zusammen mit Uli Kusch von HELLOWEEN ein neues Album aufgenommen, das wir sobald es fertig ist, veröffentlichen werden. Ich muss noch ein paar Vocals re-recorden, habe aber aktuell nicht die Zeit dazu.

Chris: Ich kann das ja für dich machen, kein Problem.

Tommy: Haha! Klar, er macht das jetzt. Also wenn ich mal Zeit habe, vielleicht im Sommer oder Herbst oder so, dann werde ich meinen Fokus darauf legen. Dann das Album herausbringen und vielleicht ein oder zwei Gigs spielen wenn es möglich ist. Ansonsten liegt mein Fokus klar auf SABATON aber natürlich werde ich weiterhin meine eigenen Lieder schreiben, denn Symphonic Power Metal passt jetzt nicht wirklich in das SABATON Konzept. Ich werde beim nächsten Album versuchen, etwas hinein zu schummeln. So „Hey, wir könnten hier ein Waldhorn einfügen oder ein paar Chöre…“ Haha!


Wie ist es für dich jetzt bei SABATON zu spielen, wie habt ihr euch kennen gelernt?


Tommy: Es begann, als ich sie 2010 einmal live gesehen habe und nach der Show noch mit ihnen Party machte und die Jungs ein bisschen kennen lernte. Als Joakim dann ein Piano fand fingen wir zu spielen an und sangen Disney Songs und er meinte gleich: „Yeah, er mag die selbe Musik wie ich!“.

Chris: Disney! Haha!


Welcher Song wars?


Chris: Sicher „Die kleine Meerjungfrau“, oder?

Tommy: Yeah… (beginnt die Titelmelodie der kleinen Meerjungfrau zu singen)
Wir blieben dann in Kontakt und 2012, als sie ein paar neue Mitglieder suchten, riefen sie mich an und fragten, ob ich nicht mitmachen wolle. Ich hatte aber so viel zu tun mit REINXEED und dem Projekt SWEDISH HITZ GOES METAL und bezog gerade mein erstes Apartment in Südschweden. Ich wollte mich einmal erst darauf konzentrieren und hatte nicht die Zeit die man für SABATON aber braucht. Also lehnte ich dankend ab. Wir blieben aber weiterhin in Kontakt und als dann Thobbe die Band verließ riefen sie mich wieder an und sagten „Wir denken immer noch über dich nach, wenn du einen Gig willst, dann komm“ Und für mich passte der Zeitpunkt viel besser also sagte ich ja und ich könnte nicht glücklicher darüber sein.


Das war aber wirklich nett von euch, dass ihr da wieder an ihn gedacht habt.


Tommy: Ich bin sehr glücklich darüber! Time of my live!

Also. Was ist euer persönlicher Lieblingssong auf dem neuen Album?


Chris: Das ist eine wirklich schwere Frage. Das ändert sich fast wöchentlich. Ich glaube aktuell ist es „Winged Hussars“.


Wegen der Lyrics oder der Musik?


Chris: Ich finde, beides. Ich spiele den Song wirklich gerne live, eigentlich am liebsten. Aber wenn ich mir das Album anhöre, dann mag ich „Last Dying Breath“ lieber.


Ihr habt uns ja bereits erzählt, dass ihr letztes Jahr eine Menge Shows spieltet, was war euer unglaublichstes Konzert und warum?


Tommy: Uhh! Das ist auch eine schwere Frage. Ich finde, die Show in Prag vor ca 12 000 Leuten in einer ausverkauften Arena war schon großartig.

Chris: Stimmt, das war cool!

Tommy: Aber eigentlich war für mich der letzte Gig ein großartiger Gig. Wir spielten in meiner Heimatstadt und fast alle Freunde und die ganze Familie waren da, also hatte ich die Möglichkeit zu zeigen, dass ich es geschafft habe. Verstehst du? Dieses Gefühl hast du nicht immer, aber manchmal sollte man den Erfolg schon genießen, den man sich durch die Jahre erarbeitet hat. Darum war es eine großartige Show für mich und es war auch ziemlich spaßig, weil eine Menge Streiche gespielt wurden usw. Bei der letzten Show ist immer eine traurige aber auch witzige Atmosphäre. Die komplette Bühne war voller Fotos von mir als Frau. Haha!

Chris: Lange Geschichte.


Könnt ihr sie auch in kurz erzählen?


Tommy: Ich und Chris haben ein paar Snapchat Fotos mit dem Filter, der dein Gesicht in das Gesicht einer Frau verwandelt, also mehr feminin, gemacht. Dann habe ich ihm alle Fotos geschickt. Und aus unerfindlichen Gründen kamen diese Fotos – auf denen ich ganz nebenbei bemerkt ziemlich heiß aussah – zu unserem Tourmanager und der druckte alle aus.

Chris: Ich habe keine Ahnung wovon du da gerade redest.

Tommy: Die komplette Bühne war mit diesen Bildern zugeklebt.

Chris: Mein Handy wurde gehacked. Mehr sage ich nicht dazu. Haha!

Tommy: Haha! Ja das war wirklich witzig. Die Bilder waren sogar auf den Stufen.

Chris: Auf der Bühne, den Monitoren, einfach überall.

Tommy: Als sie das Piano auf die Bühne zogen, war das sogar voller Bilder. Ich musste erst alle abnehmen, um darauf spielen zu können.

Chris: Ja, das war lustig.

Tommy: Vor allem, als die Leute meinten „Wer ist diese attraktive Lady?“ Und dann war das ich.. Ja, das ist wirklich war.


Das ist komisch… Hattet ihr auch schon schräge Situationen mit Fans?


Chris: Nein, aber wir mussten schon auf ganz eigenartigen Dingen unterschreiben. Das komischste war ein toter, ausgestopfter Fuchs.

Tommy: Wirklich?!

Chris: Und ein Pizzakarton, da kam einer und fragte mich „Hey, kannst du auf dem Pizzakarton unterschreiben?“

Tommy: Ich finds immer lustig, wenn die Leute kommen und wollen, dass man auf der Rückseite des Handys unterschreibt und ich denen dann erkläre, dass das ja morgen schon abgewischt sein wird und sie trotzdem so „Oh, ja das geht schon klar“ und ich unterschreibe dann natürlich.


Welche andere skandinavische Metal Band würdet ihr eigentlich empfehlen?


Tommy und Chris: Oh da gibt’s so viele! Auf jeden Fall TWILIGHT FORCE und auch AVATAR sind verdammt großartig.




Was sind eure persönlichen Lieblings Metal Bands?


Chris: Für mich IRON MAIDEN.

Tommy (mit ernster Stimme): Cindy Lauper.

Chris: Cindy Lauper! Haha! Das geht nicht gut aus für dich!

Tommy: Shit, das wird ja immer noch alles aufgezeichnet.
Nein, natürlich Gary Moore. Mit Gary Moore fing alles an.


Schaut ihr euch noch Konzerte von anderen Bands an?


Chris: Klar, wir sind mit IRON MAIDEN getourt für ca. zwölf Shows oder so und das war die beste Zeit meines Lebens. Ich war so nervös, dass ich endlich meine Idole treffe aber es war einfach großartig. Ich hoffe, dass wir wieder mal ein paar Shows mit IRON MADEN machen können. Ich hab sie wirklich auf jeder Show, als wir Support waren, gesehen und als sie dann noch einmal nach Gothenburg kamen und wir gerade eine Tourpause hatten, fuhr ich sogar dorthin um sie zu sehen.


Und seht ihr euch auch andere Bands an, wenn ihr auf Festivals spielt?


Chris: Klar.


Habt ihr euch heute schon eine Band angesehen?


Chris: Heute habe ich noch nicht wirklich etwas gesehen, weil wir erst ziemlich spät angekommen sind. Ich war wirklich müde, weil unser Bus kaputt ging und wir einen Touristenbus nehmen mussten. Ich schlief im Sitzen und das war echt unbequem, also habe ich hier noch ein kurzes Schläfchen eingelegt und bin erst vorher wach geworden. Ich wollte mir eigentlich WINTERSUN ansehen, aber die habe ich ohnehin schon so oft gesehen.


Seid ihr nur heute hier oder bleibt ihr länger in Helsinki?


Chris: Wir werden morgen Früh nach Hause fahren.

Tommy: Es war eine anstrengende Woche als brauchen wir jetzt mal ein paar Tage off.


Wenn wir einen Trip nach Schweden planen, wo sind die guten Metal Hotspots?


Tommy: Gothenburg auf jeden Fall.

Chris und Tommy: Definitiv Gothenburg, Stockholm, Umea und den Norden, Falun. Das sind dann alle wichtigen Städte.

Tommy: Und eigentlich kommen fast alle Metalbands von dort.

Chris: NOCTURNAL KNIGHTS, MESHUGGAH und viele mehr und natürlich dieser Junge (zeigt auf Tommy).

Tommy: Es sind einfach zu viele.

Chris: Alle kommen sie aus Gothenburg.


Und welche Bars oder Locations sollte man dann in Gothenburg besuchen?


Tommy: Sticky Fingers, Trädgar´n - heißt so viel wie Garten. Aber so oft war ich noch nicht in Gothenburg, vielleicht so drei Mal…

Chris. Ich war da schon öfter, aber ich kann mich eigentlich an nichts erinnern.


Aber wir sollten da hin?


Chris: Klar! Ihr solltet da unbedingt hin.

Tommy: Es ist überhaupt eine sehr schöne Stadt. Es gibt dort Liseberg, einen riesigen Vergnügungspark.


Spielt ihr auch noch andere Instrumente bzw. wenn ihr ein Instrument aussuchen könntet, welches würdet ihr lernen wollen?


Chris sieht zu Tommy und sagt: Du spielst ja sowieso fast alles.

Tommy lacht: Ich hatte eine sehr langweilige Kindheit, also habe ich eine Menge Instrumente gerlent: Piano, Schlagzeug, Bass, Gitarre, Vocals und ein bisschen Irische Flöte und Ukulele, aber ich würde gerne noch Cello lernen.


Und welches ist dein Lieblingsinstrument?


Chris antwortet für Tommy: Vocals!

Tommy: Klar, ich genieße es sehr zu singen aber ich würde das Piano wählen, weil man soviel damit machen kann.




Piano ist auch wichtig zum Musikschreiben.


Tommy: Genau, wenn ich Musik schreibe, dann zu 90% mit dem Piano. Manchmal passiert es per Zufall, dass ich mir denke „oh, das ist ein cooles Gitarrenriff“ aber ansonsten mache ich alles am Piano.

Chris: Das gilt auch für mich. Ich spiele Schlagzeug, Bass und ein bisschen Piano…

Tommy unterbricht ihn: Er ist ein großartiger Drummer, ihr solltet ihn einmal spielen hören. Manchmal stielt er sich beim Soundcheck hinter die Drums und „bye bye Hannes“…

Chris: Ich spiele nun seit zwölf Jahren Schlagzeug. Als ich in der Highschool war konnte man sich ein Instrument aussuchen und ich nahm die Akustikgitarre. Aber das war so langweilig, weil man da nur Noten lesen musste und sowas und ich entschied mich dann um und nahm das Schlagzeug, wofür ich heute noch sehr dankbar bin.


Wenn ihr einen neuen Song schreibt, wie geht ihr da vor?


Chris: Normalerweise fällt dir neues Zeug während dem Schlafen ein. Da erscheint eine Melodie in deinem Kopf und wenn du aufwachst denkst du dir dann „Shit!“ und rennst zum Computer. Man wacht mit einer Art Panik auf „Ahh! Ich muss einen Song schreiben!“ Also normalerweise läufts so. Oder man sitzt im Flugzeug und beginnt zu summen und denkt sich dann, dass sich das cool anhört und dann singt man es in sein Handy, während man neben einer grantigen Dame sitzt. Und dann hängst du dich hinter dein Instrument wenn du wieder zuhause bist und mehr Zeit hast und gehst alle Ideen von deinem Handy oder Laptop durch um zu sehen ob etwas dabei ist, was man nutzen kann.


Also sammelt ihr die meisten Ideen schon auf Tour?


Chris: Ja genau. Wir sind ja auch die meiste Zeit und sehr konstant auf Tour, also sammelt man da schon das Meiste. Wenn man dann mal zuhause ist schaltet man eher den Kopf aus und genießt das Leben. Das bisschen wenigstens, das man hat.

Tommy: Es ist nicht so, dass man nach Hause kommt und gleich wieder mit Gitarre spielen anfängt. So „Aah! Heute möchte ich gerne mal Gitarre spielen! Das hab ich ja nur die letzten 400 Tage gemacht!“.


Welcher SABATON-Song ist am schwersten live zu spielen?


Tommy: “Primo Victoria“.

Beide lachen: Neeeein!

Chris: Der schwierigste Song ist, wie ich finde, “Stalingrad”. Denn er ändert sich immer wieder vom Tempo her und vereint verschiedene Stile. Ich finde, es ist sehr knifflig, den hinzukriegen.

Tommy: Yeah, das würde ich auch sagen, eben wegen der Tempowechsel. Da geht es nicht so eins, zwei, drei, vier den ganzen Song. Und darüber hinaus sind noch eine Menge Gitarrenriffs und Chöre. Aber wenn wir den Nagel auf den Kopf treffen, dann klingt es grandios!

Beide: Ja WENN wir es schaffen! Haha!


Letzte Frage: Ihr habt eine Kooperation mit Wargaming und ihrem Spiel World of Tanks. Worum geht’s in der Kooperation? Spielt ihr selbst das Spiel? Was könnt ihr uns darüber erzählen?


Chris: Wir können noch nicht wirklich so viel darüber erzählen, aber es wird wirklich cool. Es involviert eine Menge Explosionen und Panzer und so Zeug.

Tommy: Yeah, das wird sehr sehr cool, aber wir dürfen aktuell leider noch keine Details erzählen, aber es dauert ja nicht mehr lange und es ist das Warten wert.

Chris: Nur mehr einen Monat, oder?

Tommy: Genau!

Are you already excited about the upcoming show?


Chris: Absolutely, I was a little bit tired earlier today but I took a nap and now all is fine.


Is playing a show already a routine for you?


Chris: No, it gets to a routine after a while, but you have to push that aside. I mean people have been waiting or buying tickets maybe a year in advance to see a band and then we come up and do a mediocre show and then they are like “What the fuck!” We can’t do that. It’s like going to the opera and stuff you know, it has to be spectacular every night. So it’s the same for us, we try to make the best show we can do every night. Even though we get sick sometimes we have to do that.


So you are also playing when you are sick?


Chris: Yes, absolutely. I think it was three or four years ago when I got double side pneumonia and I still had to be on stage.


That’s pretty bad!


Chris: Yeah, that’s really bad. It’s not fun.

Tommy: Last year or earlier this year in Vienna I had such a high fever I was sleeping until two hours before the show and I fell asleep again and Chris woke me up like ten minutes before the show started and then we had a bucket next to me in case I need to puke.

Chris: Not nice!


No not nice, so let’s change to another topic your current record was released last year, what has changed for you since then - except the exit from Thobbe and the entry from Tommy?


Chris: Well for me I got a little bit more fatter. (Laughing)

Tommy: I got skinnier! Haha

Chris: He got skinnier! Hahaha!

Tommy: I lost like 15kg or something.

Chris: So, I don’t know, I’m just kidding. It has been a hell of a ride actually, it has been a lot of shows since the new album.

Tommy: We started off with to gigs in Poland, one in Israel and then two months in North and South America, home for eight days, then do almost one month in Russia, home for one and a half week and then started a three month long European tour and then a two weeks beak in between and two weeks after that we were off to America again for five weeks, home for two weeks and now we are doing the festivals.


Wow, those are a lot of shows!


Chris: Yeah! Quite heavy!


So what will be your next show after Tuska?


Chris: After Tuska we will go home for maybe one week.

Tommy: Yes one week and then we do Spain.


In our last interview last year on Summerbreeze festival, when Thobbe played the last shows, Hannes told us, that you have a new man who is a great guitarist, singer and a supercool guy.


Tommy: Really? Cool!

Chris: Really!? Uhhh! Haha! Don’t give him too much credit now! Because then he will get an ego boost or something like that.


So what do you think about him now?


Chris: Hahaha! I want to record this!


You are on a record!


Chris: Haha! No he is a really fucking cool guy. We have the same music style. Yeah, we love the same music and he plays like a god and he sings even better.

Tommy: Chris!

Chris: Yeah, you have to check out his own stuff – REINXEED.


Yeah, I know about them.


Tommy: Really?


What is about REINXEED actually?


Tommy: Well, it’s been a little bit on ice because of some obvious reasons but we have recorded a new album. Together with with Uli Kusch from HELLOWEEN that will be released as soon as the Album is done. I have some vocals I still need to re-record but I haven’t had the time to do that.

Chris: I can do it, no problem.

Tommy: Haha, he can do it. So when I have time, maybe during the summer or this fall or something when I have time I will do that and put a little focus on that. Release the album and maybe have one or two gigs if it is possible but otherwise all my focus goes to SABATON but of course I will continue to write music on my own because symphonic power metal doesn’t really fit quite well in the SABATON concept. I will try to sneak it in a little bit for the next album. Like, hey we can add a French horn here or in some quires. Haha


How is it to play with SABATON, how did you come in touch with this guys?


Tommy: It started off when I saw them live, I saw them once 2010 and I partied with them after the show and got to know the guys a little bit and Joakim and me found the piano we started play and sing Disney Songs and he was like “Yeah, he likes the same music as I do.”

Chris: Disney! Haha!


Which song was it?


Chris: The Little Mermaid, right?

Tommy: Yeah …. (Starts singing the melody of the little mermaid) We stayed in touch and then 2012 when they needed a couple of new members they called me and asked if I want to join but I had so much going on with my band REINXEED and a project called SWEDISH HITZ GOES METAL and I just got my first real apartment in southern Sweden. I need to focus on that for a while so I couldn’t put my time to SABATON that they needed me to give so I declined their very generous offer but we stayed in touch and then when Thobbe was quitting the band they called me and said we are still thinking about you. If you want a gig, it’s yours and it was a much better time then. Then I said yes and I couldn’t be happier.


That was a very nice move that you waited for him.


Tommy: I am very happy! Time of my live!

What is your favourite song on the new LP?


Chris: Wow that is a very hard question. It changes from week to week. I think now it is “Winged Hussars”.


According to music or to lyrics?


Chris: Both I think. I love to play it live. It is one of my favourite songs to play live. But when I am listening to the album I have to say it is “Last Dying Breath”


You told us that you played a lot of shows last year, so what was the most amazing concert and why?


Tommy: Uhh! That’s a tough one, I mean the show in Prague with about 12.000 people and a sold out arena was pretty amazing.

Chris: Yes it was cool!

Tommy: But for me at least the last gig was a great gig. It was in my hometown almost so all my friends and family where there, so I had the chance to say like “Look at me, I made it!” You know a little bit that feeling, you don’t always get that but sometimes you might should enjoy any kind of success you achieved during the years. So that was a great show for me and it was fun as well because there were some pranks and stuff. The last show is always sad but very happy, good atmosphere all day long. The entire stage was covered with pictures of me dressed as a woman. Hahaha

Chris: Long story.


Can you give it in short?


Tommy: Me and Chris we took some snapchat photos you know where the filter turns your face into a woman, more feminine. So I sent all this pictures to him. But for some reason one of this photos - the picture of me looking like a very attractive girl - ended up with our tour manager who printed it.

Chris: I have no idea what are you talking about.

Tommy: The entire stage was covered from wall to wall with my picture.

Chris: My phone got hacked. I can say that. Hahaha

Tommy: Hahaha. That was fun. It was on the stairs.

Chris: On the stage, on the monitors, the picture was all over the stage.

Tommy: When they pulled out the piano, the piano was covered with pics. I had to take them away to play it.

Chris: It was fun.

Tommy: Especially when people say “Who is this attractive lady?” It’s Tommy! Yeah, that happened.


Wow that’s really weird. Did you also have some weird situations with fans?


Chris: No but we got weird stuff we had to sign. The weirdest thing I got was a dead fox, a stuffed fox.

Tommy: Really?

Chris: And a pizza carton, the situation was like “Can you sign my pizza carton?”

Tommy: I think it’s fun when people come and want their phones signed on the black like this (pointing at my phone) and I say to them you know that tomorrow it will be gone and they say “Oh, it’s okay, it’s okay” and I say yes I can for sure.


Which other Scandinavian Metal Band you would recommend?


Tommy but also Chris: Oh there are so many! TWILIGHT FORCE for sure, AVATAR they are fucking great!


What is your favourite metal Band in general?


Chris: For me it is IRON MAIDEN


And yours?


Tommy with a severe voice: Cindy Lauper

Chris repeating him: “Cindy Lauper” and starts laughing and saying “This is not getting good for you!” Also Tommy and we had to laugh for a while and he said “Oh Shit! They are still recording. “

Tommy: No, it is Gary Moore. Gary Moore started all this.


Do you still visit concerts from other bands?


Chris: Yeah, we toured with IRON MAIDEN. It was like for twelve shows or something like that and it was the best time of my live to do that. I was so nervous meeting my idols but it has been amazing. I hope we can do some more shows with IRON MAIDEN. I’ve seen them every time when we were supporting them and they came to Gothenburg when we were home for a break and I went to Gothenburg to see them.


So when you are on playing at a festival you also see other bands?


Chris: Absolutely.


Have you seen a show today?


Chris: Today I haven’t seen so much because we arrived very late. I was really tired because our bus broke down so we had to take a tourist bus and I slept in that in a sitting position. It was a little bit bad so I took a nap here and I just woke up. I wanted to see WINTERSUN but I have seen them so many times anyways.


Do you only stay for this day or longer?


Chris: We are going home tomorrow morning.

Tommy: It has been a hard week since last Friday so we need a couple of days.


If I plan a trip to Sweden, where are the good Metal Hotspots to go?


Tommy: Gothenburg, for sure.

Chris and Tommy together: Yeah, Gothenburg, Stockholm, Umea in northern Sweden, Falun. It’s like all major cities.

Tommy: In general most of the Metal bands come from there.

Chris: NOCTURNAL KNIGHTS, MESHUGGAH and a lot more and of course we have this guy (pointing a Tommy)

Tommy: There are too many.

Chris: Yes and all of them come from Gothenburg.


So in which venues, bars or locations you should go when you visit Gothenburg.


Tommy: Sticky Fingers, Trädgar’n it means the garden. I haven’t been in Gothenburg. I have been there like three times.

Chris: I have been there more times but I still can’t remember anything.


But we have to go there.


Chris: Yes you should go there.

Tommy: It’s a lovely town. They have Liseberg it’s an amusement park, a huge amusement park.


Do you play any other instruments or if you could play another instrument which one would you chose?


Chris is looking at Tommy saying: You are playing like everything.

Tommy laughing: I had a very boring childhood so I learned a lot of instruments piano, drums, bass, guitar, vocals and a little bit of Irish flute and ukulele but I would love to play the cello.


So which one is your favourite instrument then?


Chris answering for Tommy: Vocal Chords.

Tommy: Well I enjoy to sing most absolutely but I would say piano because you can play, you can do so much on the piano.


It is also important to write your music.


Tommy: Yes, when I write music I do it like 90% of the time with a piano. Sometimes by coincidence I think oh this is a cool guitar riff but otherwise I do everything on the piano.

Chris: It’s the same for me, I do drums, bass, piano not as good as…

Tommy interrupting him: He is a great drummer you should hear him play. Sometimes he steals the drums during sound check and he is like well Hannes bye bye…

Chris: Now I play drums for twelve years. When I was in high school you had two instruments you could choose guitar and I chose the acoustic guitar but that was so boring because you only have to read notes and shit and I was aaahhhh boring and I changed to drums which I’m very happy for.


When you create a new song, how does it work?


Chris: Usually the new stuff comes when you are sleeping, there pops up a melody in your head and then you wake up and you are like “Shit!” and you have to run to your computer. You wake up in a kind of panic like “Ahh! I have to write a song! I have to write a song! Usually it happens like that. Or you are sitting in an airplane and starting humming and think oh that is a cool thing and you have to sing it in your phone sitting next to an angry lady. Then you just use your instrument when you are back home and have more time and use all the ideas from your phone and your laptop and see if you can use anything of this.


So you collect your ideas on tour?


Chris: Yeah, absolutely because we are always and constantly on tour so most of the stuff comes up when you are on tour. When you go back home you shut off your brain and then just enjoy your live. The little bit of live you have.

Tommy: It’s not like you go home and start playing guitar. Like Ahh! I feel like playing today because I have been doing that like 400 days in a row.


What is the most difficult SABATON song to play?


Tommy: "Primo Victoria"

Both laughing and saying: Noooo!

Chris: The most difficult song I have to say "Stalingrad". Because it has changes in tempo and has a lot of different styles. I think that is the trickiest song to play to get it tight.

Tommy: Yeah, I would agree with that because the tempo changes and all that, it’s not one, two three, four, it’s not like that during the entire song. It’s a lot of guitar riffs and quires on top of that. But when we nail it, it sounds awesome.

Chris: When we do! (Both laughing)

Tommy: That one time we do.

Chris: One time we almost did it.


Last question: you cooperated with Wargaming and their game World of Tanks. What is the cooperation about? Do you play the game? What can you tell us about?


Chris: We can’t tell you that much but it’s a cool thing we’re gonna do. It’s got to involve a lot of explosions and tanks and stuff like that.

Tommy: Yeah it’s gonna be very, very cool but as he said we cannot reveal anything yet but it will not be long…

Chris: Yes, very soon

Tommy: It’s worth to wait.

Chris: Just one month to wait alright?

Tommy: Yeah
