DRAGONFORCE haben mit "Reaching Into Infinity" nicht nur ihr abwechslungsreichstes, sondern wahrscheinlich auch ihr bestes Album bisher abgeliefert. Warum das siebte Werk der britischen High Speed Power Metaller so frisch und fruchtig klingt, erzählte uns Bassist und neuerdings auch Hauptsongwriter Frederic Leclerque im kurzweiligen Interview.


Hey Fred, was tut sich bei dir im Moment?


Ich bin gerade in London, wo wir für die kommende Welt-Tournee proben, und alles läuft großartig!




Gratulation zu eurer neuen großartigen Platte. Wie fühlst du dich nun mit „Reaching Into Infinity“?


Danke! Ich fühle mich super. Wir haben sehr positive Reviews und können es nicht erwarten, die Songs live zu spielen und zu sehen, wie die Crowd reagiert. Es ist schön zu hören, oder Reviews zu lesen, dass es den Leuten gefällt, aber es gibt nichts Vegleichbares zu dem realen Ding: Live!


Für mich ist es das wohl abwechslungsreichste Album, das ihr je gemacht habt, war das die Itention eine Art Best-Of plus einen Schritt nach vorne zu machen?


Ein Schritt nach vorne, definitiv. Ich finde, das sollte ein Album sowieso haben, denn wo wäre sonst der Sinn dahinter? Aber ja, ich wollte mehr Ecken des Metal-Universums erkunden, also auf eine Weise ist es dadurch abwechslungsreicher. Zum Thema „best Of DRAGONFORCE“, wir haben ja schon „Killer Elite“ veröffentlicht! Ich denke jeder Musiker in der Band hat eine starke Identität, so kannst du natürlich immer sagen, dass es DRAGONFORCE ist, egal was passiert. Aber ich persönlich bin jetzt nicht zurück durch die Diskographie gegangen und habe versucht die besten Elemente von dort oder da zu nehmen, das nicht.


Und es sieht so aus, als wäre Marc besser in den Bandsound integriert als zuvor. Was denkst du?


Ich denke, du hast damit recht. Es ist jetzt das dritte Album, das er mit uns aufgenommen hat und er hat sich im Stil und seiner Person weiterentwickelt. Außerdem haben wir auf dem Album an seiner Interpretation und den verschiedenen Aspekten seiner Stimme gearbeitet und geschaut, was es der Band bringen kann. Er hat großartige Arbeit geleistet.


Ich hörte, du hast fast das komplette Album alleine geschrieben – wie kam es, dass der später dazugekommene Bassist plötzlich zum Hauptsongwriter wird?


Da hast du richtig gehört! Tja... das ist Stück für Stück passiert. Als ich zur Band kam, war das fast ein Unfall (lacht). Wie du vielleicht weißt, bin ich Gitarrist, und 2005 fragte mich DRAGONFORCE, ob ich am Bass für ein paar Shows einspringen könnte – da sagte ich ja. Dann haben sie mich gefragt, ob ich bleiben möchte, und ich hatte Spaß mit den Jungs, mit der Musik zunächst aber nicht so. Da wollte ich nicht im Schreibprozess eingebuden werden, weil ich diese Art von Metal nicht schreiben wollte. Dann während der „The Power Within“ Session dachte ich mir, ich sollte vielleicht Musik, die mir Spaß macht schreiben und sehen, wie sie zu DRAGONFORCE passen könnte. Und da kam „Seasons“ und Sam und ich schrieben gemeinsam einen Song namens „Give Me The Night“. Das lief so super, dass wir uns dachten, das sollten wir beim nächsten Album wieder machen, somit haben wir „Maximum Overload“ komplett gemeinsam geschrieben. Das wollten wir beim neuen Album auch machen, aber Sam war etwas trockengelaufen, was Ideen betrifft, er hat ja auch fünf Alben fast im Alleingang geschrieben, was ja verständlich ist, und ich hatte einfach viele Ideen... so here we are.


Was inspiriert dich zu den Texten?


Das kommt darauf an. Dinge, die mir passieren wie bei „Ashes Of The Dawn“ oder „War!“... manchmal ein Film oder Buch. Ich mag es nicht wirklich, Texte zu schreiben, denn ich mag es nicht Worte zu verwenden um mich musikalisch auszudrücken. Ich mag es lieber Harmonien und Melodien zu schreiben, also ist es schwerer für mich Texte zu schreiben.


Ich war überwältigt von „War!“. Für mich klingt es etwas wie DRAGONFORCE trifft auf ANNIHILATOR – wie kam die Idee zu diesem Thrash-Song?


Die ANNIHILATOR Referenz ist cool, aber wenn ich ANNIHILATOR erwähnen sollte, dann würde ich eher den Mittelteil von „Astral Empire“ nehmen (grinst). Ich habe „War!“ geschrieben, nachdem ich auf einem Metal Festival in Vouziers in Frankreich, nähe meiner Heimat, war. Da waren einige Old-School Speed Metal Bands aus Frankreich wie KILLERS oder ADX und da dachte ich mir „die Leute sagen immer DRAGONFORCE sei schnell, aber DAS ist schnell“, es gibt ein Gefühl von Geschwindigkeit und Dringlichkeit in deren Sound... und die machen das schon seit Jahren... und es war ein großartiger Abend. Wir hatten viel Spaß, redeten und machten mit ihnen Musik. Als ich heimkam, dachte ich mir, ich möchte diesen Bands Tribut zollen... Et Voilá.




Ein weiterer recht anders klingender Song, ist „The Edge Of The World“ – Ich war von dem MORBID ANGEL-artigem Part in der Mitte mit dir an den Vocals überrascht. Wie kam die Idee und gab es da negative Reaktionen, denn nicht jeder Power Metal Fan wird seine Freude mit dieser Death Metal Wucht haben?


Ich liebe MORBID ANGEL, es ist vielleicht sogar meine Lieblingsband, ich denke zwar nicht, dass der Part nach ihnen klingt – aber danke – und nicht ich singe da, sondern Marc! Er macht so gute Arbeit. Ich habe es immer geliebt lange Songs zu schreiben, die in verschiedene Vibes, Stimmungen und Phasen gehen und ich dachte mir es wäre cool verschiedene Elemente unserer Sounds zu erforschen und tiefer rein zu gehen, also nicht sich zurückhalten und sagen „hier ist ein kleiner Touch vom Death Metal“, sondern stattdessen es einfach zu tun!

Was negative Reaktionen betrifft, ich hatte gerade erst ein Interview, bei dem der Journalist gefragt hat, ob ich Angst vor Reaktionen aus dem Extreme Metal Sektor hätte, weil ich vielleicht „deren Musik hijacke“, und jetzt fragst du mich das Gegenteil. (lacht)
Ich denke nicht, dass wir die ganze Welt zufriedenstellen können, also werden sich einige Death Metaller jammern, weil wir als DRAGONFORCE das machen und dadurch ist es nicht „trve“ und manch Power Metaller wird jammern, weil es nicht um Einhörner geht und es keine Harpsichords und Engelschöre an der Stelle haben... schlecht für diese Leute – es ist mir egal! (grinst) Und um ehrlich zu sein, gab es nicht viele negative Reaktionen, ich denke die Leute genießen den Song wirklich, was mich sehr glücklich macht.


Was kannst du mir über den Titel und das Artwork erzählen?


Der Titel erzählt von der Kraft der Music in Bezug auf die Flucht aus der Wirklichkeit. Die Welt um uns ist kein so fröhlicher Ort, aber Musik kann mit seiner Kraft und Unendlichkeit helfen, daraus zu entfliehen. Das Artwork repräsentiert das mit der zerstörten Welt um uns herum – und der Drache ist ein Symbol unserer Musik.


Es gibt auch zwei Bonus Tracks – was kannst du mir über das großartige Death Cover und „Hatred & Revenge“ erzählen? Der Song erinnert mich etwas an die True Metal Tracks „Three Hammers“ und „Die By The Sword“.


“Evil Dead“ ist mein Lieblings-Horror Film und DEATH ist eine Band, die Sam, Herman und ich wirklich mögen. Ich dachte, es würde Spaß machen einen Song von einer Band zu covern, die die Fans nicht erwarten oder gar nicht glauben, dass wir diese mögen (auch wenn meine Band SINSAENUM womöglich einen Hinweis geben könnte). Chuck Shuldiner war ein großer Fan des Heavy Metal, also hoffe ich mal er hätte das Cover gutgeheißen. Was „Hatred & Revenge“ betrifft, das ist ein Song von Sam. Ich erinnere mich, wie ich mit ihm am Mittelteil gearbeitet habe... wir brauchten einen Bonus-Song und haben uns gemeinsam für diesen entschieden.




Es sieht so aus, als hättest du neben DRAGONFORCE auch noch genug Zeit für andere Projekte und Bands. Kannst du mir erzählen, was in deiner Karriere noch abgeht?


Klar, ich habe mir SINSAENUM letztes Jahr ein Album veröffentlicht und wir arbeiten schon an neuem Zeug, aber da ist es noch zu früh um etwas zu sagen. Ich sehe es aber nicht als Projekt, sondern als Band. Viele denken, dass es nur ein Projekt wäre, da die Musiker alle in anderen Bands involviert sind, da könnten wir sicher lange diskutieren, aber es IST eine Band. Projekt beinhaltet für mich „kurzlebig“, „weniger wichtig“ und das ist fern von der Realität. So oder so.. abgesehen davon, war ich noch auf Tour mit LOUDBLAST, was großartig war, vielleicht werde ich mit ihnen nochmal touren, was aber noch nicht sicher ist. Alles was ich sagen kann, ist, dass einiges in Arbeit ist.


Du hast HEAVENLY verlassen um DRAGONFORCE beizutreten. Wie siehst du auf die Zeit zurück und hast du noch Kontakt mit den Jungs?


Nicht ganz richtig. Ich habe HEAVENLY im Februar 2004 verlassen um eine andere Band mit dem Bassisten und Drummer zu starten. Ich bin erst 2006 offiziell bei DF eingestiegen. Wie ich darauf zurückblicke? Es hat Spaß gemacht! Wir waren jung, enthusiastisch und ich habe zwei Alben mit ihnen gemacht – und ich denke die waren gut. Ich habe Kontakt mit allen (ich spiele immer noch mit Max und PE in MALADAPTIVE, auch wenn es schwer ist, dass alle Zeit dafür finden) außer mit dem Sänger – aber wir sind nicht sauer aufeinander oder so etwas. Wir sind einfach verschiedene Wege gegangen.


Ihr werdet bis zum Ende des Jahres auf Welt-Tournee sein – was können wir auf der Tour erwarten?


Songs vom neuen als auch von alten Alben (lacht). Nach sieben Alben ist es wirklich schwer eine Setlist zu bauen, die alle glücklich macht, aber ich hoffe wir schaffen es! Aber wir freuen uns wirklich die neuen Songs live zu spielen, wie ich zu Beginn schon sagte.

Hi Fred, what´s going on at the moment?


Hello! Im in London and we are rehearsing for the world tour, and everything is great!


Congratulations to your new great record. How do you feel now with “Reaching Into Infinity”?


Thank you! Well I feel good. We’ve had very positive reviews, and we can’t wait to play new songs live and see the crowds reaction-because. It´s good to hear or read reviews and comments, but theres nothing like the real thing: live!


For me it´s the most diverse record you ever did, was this your intention to do a kind of best of DRAGONFORCE plus a step forward?


A step forward, definitely. I think that´s what a new album should be anyway, otherwise whats the point. But yes, I wanted to explore more corners of the heavy metal world so it is more diverse in that sense. As for the “best of DRAGONFORCE” we already released Killer Elite! I guess every musician in the band has a strong identity so you can definitely tell its Dragonforce no matter what. But I personally didn´t go back in our discography and try to grab the best elements here and there, no.


And it seems Marc is now better in the band sound integrated than ever. What do you think about that?


I think you’re right. That’s his 3rd album with us now, he has developed his style and personality, and on this album we worked on his interpretation, on the different aspects of his voice and what it could bring to the band. He did a great job on this album!


I heard, most of the songs were written by you – how did it happen that you as the bass player who joined the band later, become the main-songwriter?


You heard right! Well..it happened little by little. When I first joined the band, it was almost by accident ? I’m a guitar player you know, and back in 2005 DRAGONFORCE asked me if I could fill in on bass for a few shows, I said yes. Then they asked me if I wanted to stay, and I enjoyed the people, not particularly the music, so I said yes. I didn´t want to get involved in the composition because I didn´t want to write that kind of metal. Then during “The Power Within” session I thought I should actually participate and write music I like and see if that could fit in DRAGONFORCE, and then there was “Seasons”, and we co-wrote a song Sam and I, called “Give Me The Night’”. That went very well so we thought we should do that for the next album, so we co wrote “Maximum Overload” together, all of it. And we were supposed to do the same for “Reaching” but Sam was pretty dry on ideas (he wrote almost five albums on his own so its understandable) and I had a lot of ideas…so here we are.


What inspires you for the lyrics?


It depends. Things that happened to me, like for “Ashes Of The Dawn”, or “War”.. sometimes a movie, or a book. I don’t like to write lyrics, I don’t like to use words to express myself musically, I prefer to write harmonies, melodies..so it’s more difficult for me to write lyrics.


I was really blown away from “War!”. For me it was kind of DRAGONFORCE meets ANNIHILATOR – how came the idea for this thrash song?


Nice for the ANNIHILATOR reference, but if I had to mention Annihilator it would be in the middle section of “Astral Empire” I wrote “War!” the day after going to a heavy metal festival in Vouziers, France, near my home town. There was a lot of old school French speed metal bands like Killers and ADX, and I thought to myself “people say that Dragonforce is fast but I think THIS is fast”, there’s a sense of speed, urgency in their music, and they’ve been doing it for years..and well, it was a great evening, we had a great time speaking and partying with them, and the next day I got back home and thought it´d be nice to pay tribute to this bands. Et Voilá!


Another quite different sounding song is “The Edge Of The World” – I was surprised by this great MORBID ANGEL part with you on vocals. How came this idea and were there also negative reactions, because not every Power Metal fans has fun with Death Metal parts I guess.


I love MOBID ANGEL its probably my favourite band, but I don´t really think the death metal part in “Edge” sounds like them-but thank you- and its not me whos singing, but Marc! He is doing a great job. I always loved to write long songs that go into different vibes, moods, colors, and I thought it was nice to explore different elements of our music and go deep into them, not hold back and go “here is a little touch of death metal” but instead just go for it!

As for the negative reactions, I actually just did an interview before this one where the journalist was asking if I feared the reaction of extreme metal fans because we might “hijack their music”, and now you are asking me the opposite hahaha. I don´t think we can please the whole world, so sure, some death metallers will moan because we do that but we are called Dragonforce so its not “trve” and, and some power metallers will moan because that part is not about unicorn and lack of harpsichord and angel choirs…Unfortunately for them, I don´t really care ? to be fair there hasn´t been a lot of negative reactions, I think people really enjoy this song which makes me really happy?


What can you tell me about the title and the artwork?


The title talks about the power of music in terms of escapism. The world around us is not a happy place to be and music can help you escape, it´s power is infinite. The artwork is a representation of that, the destroyed world around us, and the dragon as a symbol of our music.

There are also two bonus tracks – what can you tell me about this great DEATH-Cover and “Hatred And Revenge” which reminds me a bit on “Three Hammers” and “Die By The Sword”, which also had this True Metal approach?


“Evil Dead” is my favourite horror movie and DEATH is a band that Sam, Herman and I really like. I thought it would be fun to do a cover of a metal band that people wouldn´t expected us to cover or even like (eventhough they might get the idea with SINSAENUM) and make it sound DRAGONFORCE. Chuck Shuldiner was a big fan of heavy metal so hopefully he would have approved! As for "Hatred And Revenge", It´s one of Sams song. I remember working with him on the middle part…we had to chose a song for bonus and we voted for that one?


It seems you also have enough time for other project and bands besides DRAGONFORCE. Can you tell me what else is going on in your careere at the moment?


Well I released an album with SINSAENUM last year, and we are working on stuff but its too early to tell. I don´t consider SINSAENUM as a project but as my band as well, People might have misunderstood it due to the people involved and theres a thin line and I guess we could argue for a long time but it´s a BAND. Project to me involves “short lived”, “less important”, and that´s very far from being the case. Anyway, apart from that I´ve also been on tour with LOUDBLAST, which was awesome, maybe I will tour with them again, but its too early to tell. All I can say is that there are a lot of things Im working on.


You left HEAVENLY to join DRAGONFORCE. How do you look back at that time and do you still have contact to the guys?


Not quite right. I left HEAVENLY in February 2004 to start another band with the bassplayer and the drummer. I only officially joined DF in January 2006. How do I look back at HEAVENLY? It was fun! We were young, enthusiastic, Ive done two albums with them and they were good I think. I have contact with everyone (I still play with Max and PE in MALADAPTIVE, eventhough its hard to find time cos they have other duties)apart from the singer-not that we are angry or anything. We just went separate ways.


You will tour the world until the end of the year – what can we expect from this tour?


Songs from the new album as well as some songs for the old albums haha ? after seven albums it´s hard to do a setlist that pleases everyone so hopefully that will be the case! But we are really looking forward to play the new songs live, like I said at the beginning of the interview!
