Die schwedischen Melodic Dath/Modern Metal Pioniere IN FLAMES suchen immer wieder neue Herausforderungen. Mit der "In My Room" Tour schufen die fünf Herren außergewöhnliche Shows in intimer Atmosphäre und somit unvergessliche Abende. An einem dieser Abende bzw. kurz davor trafen wir uns mit Gitarrist Niclas Engelin, der uns entspannt am sonnigen Nachmittag zum Gespräch empfing und uns einiges über die Pläne der Band erzählte.


Hi Niclas, wie lief die Tour bisher?


Die Tour läuft bisher wirklich gut. Ich mag das Konzept, ein Streicher-Quartett mit auf der Bühne zu haben. Das bringt... einen Haufen mehr Leute auf die Bühne (lacht). Und ich mag auch die speziellen Venues wie Kirchen und so weiter. Das bringt schon ein ganz anderes Feeling und Sound auf die Bühne, also nicht diesen typischen Rock-Club bzw. Arena-Sound. Und dieses Mal sind es nur wir, ohne eine Support-Band oder so etwas. Es geht vielleicht etwas ruhiger zu, aber ich vermisse schon manchmal die anderen Bands mit denen man abhängen und ein Bier.. oder auch sechs haben kann! (lacht)




Wie kam die Idee für diese Tour, also alleine unterwegs zu sein und wie lange spielt ihr dann?


Die Länge hängt ein bisschen vom Publikum ab. Es kann mehr als zwei Stunden dauern, aber andere endeten bereits nach knapp 90 Minuten. Außerdem wollten wir alles etwas anders machen als sonst. Etwas außerhalb der Wohlfühlzone von IN FLAMES. Wir sind eine Heavy Metal Band, die Vollgas gibt und headbangt und so weiter. Ich liebe das, aber manchmal musst du etwas machen, was dich herausfordert. Wir spielen auch Akustik-Songs und manchmal holen wir auch Fans auf die Bühne, die wir natürlich mit Bier füttern. (lacht)


Ich denke es ist dann auch sehr viel intimer wegen den kleineren Venues...


Ja klar, es ist viel spezieller, denn wir machen das hier und jetzt.


Wie habt ihr die speziellen Locations gesucht bzw. genehmigt bekommen in Kirchen zu spielen? War es schwer diese Erlaubnis zu bekommen?


Das ist die Aufgabe der Booker und Manger. Wir haben nur unsere Philosophie und unsere Vision davon was wir machen wollen. Wir wollten diese Intimität und das Feeling, als wäre die Stage unser Proberaum. Wir gehen rein und machen einfach, und trinken Bier. Die Show ist nicht so strikt, wir jammen auch und albern rum, es ist viel offener als eine reguläre Show.


Also improvisiert ihr auch etwas?


Ähhmm.. eher nicht. (lacht)


Euer neuestes Werk heißt „Battles“. Kannst du kurz erklären was die Idee zu dem Album war?


Ich glaube es ist unmöglich das „kurz“ zu erklären. Es ist, wenn du darüber nachdenkst... ich weiß nicht ob du das vorherige Album „Siren Charms“ gehört hast... das haben wir in Berlin aufgenommen. Ich mochte es im Hansa Studio in Berlin wo IGGY POP und andere großartige Bands epische Alben aufnahmen. Und eigentlich ist es interessant gewesen in Berlin zu sein, denn die Stadt hat so eine große Geschichte mit der Mauer und alle dem. Ich denke das scheint durch das komplette Album heraus. So ist „Siren Charms“ ein bisschen gloomy, etwas düsterer, während „Battles“ mehr unser sonniges Album darstellt. Also gingen wir nach LA um es aufzunehmen und machten jeden Abend BBQ und tranken ein paar Bier. Es war etwas einfacher. Ich liebe Berlin, aber ich bevorzuge die Sonne. Wenn du beide Alben am Stück hörst, kannst du das fühlen, wo „SC“ düster ist, ist „Battles“...mehr BBQ (lacht).
Das Konzept von „Battles“ besagt in etwa: wir alle haben unseren Weg. Ich hatte zum Beispiel früher einen Freund, der hing mit den falschen Leuten rum, rauchte Stoff und so Zeug. Jetzt hat er keine Zähne mehr und einige Probleme am Hals. Und irgendwann sagte er zu mir: „Niclas, du hast den richtigen Weg gewählt, und ich den falschen! Aber ich bin hier um die zu unterstützen“. „Battles“ handelt genau von so etwas. Und am Artwork hast du den Schädel mit dem Guten und dem Bösen. Es liegt bei dir zu entscheiden, wo du hin gehst. Es muss aber nicht zwingend so tief gehen. Du kannst auch in ein Restauraunt gehen und dir denken: „Was soll ich nehmen? Pasta? Aaah lieber Schnitzel? Ich weiß nicht!“ Es kann auch so etwas Einfaches sein (lacht).




Du bist bei IN FLAMES vor fünf Jahren erneut eingestiegen. Hast du dir jemals vorstellen können, als du in den 90ern ausgestiegen bist, dass du heute wieder in der Band bist?


Nein daran habe ich nie gedacht, denn ich war beschäftigt damit Musik zu machen und zu spielen. Ich liebe die Musik und das Spielen. Und ich kenne die Jungs seit... Jesper und ich sind gemeinsam zur Schule gegangen, Björn lebte in der gleichen Vorstadt und mit Anders spielte ich schon in den gleichen Clubs, so war alles ziemlich logisch. Als sie anriefen und meinten: „Hey wir brauchen...“ sagte ich sofort „...OK, ich bin dabei!“.


Also warum hast du die Band damals überhaupt verlassen?


Ich wollte mit GARDENIAN spielen... also etwas andere Musik, denke ich.


Ihr habt zwei Videos für „The End“ und „The Truth“ gedreht – diese sind miteinander verbunden. Was war die Idee dahinter und wie war der Dreh?


Sehr schmerzfrei, weil wir ja nur ungefähr 15 Sekunden darin vorkommen, aber wir haben ein neues Video in das ich sehr viel Hoffnung habe, aber ich kann dir noch nicht sagen für welchen Song, aber das wirst du sehen, wenn es erschienen ist. Aber ich denke ihr werdet das Video mögen. Ich meine, die vorherigen Videos waren auch schon cool, aber anders. Und das nächste ist eigentlich sogar furchteinflößend!




Na da freue ich mich darauf. Also all eure Shows sind speziell auf dieser Tour, aber hast du bisher eine Lieblingsshow oder etwas ganz Spezielles erlebt, was du so nicht erwartet hast?


Bisher? Ich meine, in einer Kirche zu spielen ist schon etwas merkwürdig. Ich bin nicht der typische Kirchen-Typ mit meinen Tattoos, darunter umgedrehte Kreuze und das eine mit dem „Hail-Mary“ und so Zeug (grinst) – aber ich erinnere mich an Bochum, die Christus Kirche. Ich habe gesehen, dass sie die Bänke nicht wegräumten, und dachte mir dass es halt ein Sitz-Konzert wird. Wir sind das nicht gewohnt. Aber als wir starteten, standen alle auf den Bänken. Also wusste ich, ich kann das Devils-Horn machen... yes! Und jeder machte es mir nach. (lacht)
Also standen wir in einer Kirche, spielten Metal-Songs und machten das Devils-Horn, das finde ich schon etwas verrückt, wenn ich daran denke.


In der Zeit, als du nicht bei IN FLAMES warst, hast du sicher deren Alben verfolgt und natürlich musst du das Material jetzt kennen um es live zu spielen. Aber was denkst du selber von der Evolution von IN FLAMES über die letzten beiden Dekaden?


Ich denke es ist gesund, in Bewegung zu sein und natürlich auch interessant, denn so weiß man nie was einen erwartet. Du hast aber die IN FLAMES Riffs und Trademarks, aber es wird immer einen Twist darin geben. Das ist für die Fans wirklich interessant, aber auch für uns, eben in Bewegung zu sein, um abwechslungsreich zu sein und als Musiker inspiriert zu bleiben, was wirklich wichtig ist.




Ich nehme an das Tourleben hat sich auch verändert...


Yeah, wir werden älter. Wir können nicht mehr so feiern wie früher (lacht).
Ich meine aber, diese Tour jetzt wäre vor zehn Jahren nicht möglich gewesen... Ich will eigentlich das Wort erwachsen nicht verwenden, aber vielleicht ist es genauso.


Hast du ein Lieblings-Album oder –Songs von den Veröffentlichungen ohne dich?


Alles mögliche. Ich mag Songs von hier und dort. Aber ich liebe es „Pinball Map“ zu spielen, der ist wie JUDAS PRIEST auf Speed. (lacht)
Und klar ich habe miene Lieblings-Songs und Alben.


Wie gehts dir mit deiner anderen Band ENGEL? Tut sich da gerade etwas?


Klar! Ich habe gerade bevor die Tour gestartet ist ein neues Album geschrieben. Die Jungs nehmen sogar schon Zeug auf. Ich denke sie sind mit ihrem Part sogar schon fertig und das Album wird das Tageslicht im September sehen. Es wird „Abandon All Hope“ heißen. Es ist ziemlich interessant... es geht um alte Segler, die nicht schwimmen können, wenn also deren Schiff sinkt... vergiss alle Hoffnung, tu einfach.


Was ist eigentlich aus dem alten Projekt mit Anders – also PASSENGER, passiert? Habt ihr jemals über ein zweites Album gesprochen?


Oh ja... wir machen das jetzt schon... ungefähr... du kannst ziemlich angepisst sein. Wir haben eigentlich zehn Songs aufgenommen. Wir sind ins Studio, haben die Tracks aufgenommen und gesagt: „Yeah, wir bringen ein Album raus.“ Dann dachten wir aber, das ist nicht gut und verwerfen es. Dumm und traurig. Wenigstens haben wir zehn Songs – wir sind nicht glücklich damit, aber wir haben sie (lacht).
Das war eigentlich schon 2004.


Ich mochte das erste wirklich...


Ja, es hat Spaß gemacht. Es war etwas alternative aber mit rockendem Vibe und auch heavy.

How did you find special concert locations like churches? And how hard was it to get the permission to play a metal show there?


That´s up the bookers and managers. We just have our philosophy, our vision of doing things. We wanted this intimacy and we wanted that feeling, like the stage is our rehearsal place. We go in and just go for it, have a beer. The show is not so strict, we can also jam and fool around, it´s more loose than a regular show.


So you improvise a little bit?


Ähhmm...maybe not. (laughs)


Your newest record is called “Battle”. Can you you explaine in a short way what was the idea of the record?


I think it´s not possible to explain it short. Because it´s if you think about it... i don´t know if you heard our previous album “Siren Charms”... we recorded that in Berlin. I liked to be in Berlin at Hansa Studio where IGGY POP and other great bands recorded epic records. And then actually beeing in Berlin, that have so much history with the wall that divided the city and so on. I think that shines through the whole album. So “Siren Charms” is a little bit gloomy, a little bit dark, where “Battles” more like our sunny album. So we went to LA to record this one and we BBQ´ed every evening and had a couple of beers. It was a little bit easier. I love Berlin, but i prefer the sun. When you listen to both albums in a row, you can feel that, while “SC” is darker and “Battles”... we had a BBQ. (laughs)
The concept of “Battles” is like; we all have our path. We are all have our path... I had a friend back in time, he hang out with the wrong people, smoked hash and that stuff. Now he´s got no teeth and other issues and one time he said to me “Niclas, you chose the right path and i choose the wrong! And I am now here to support you”. “Battles” deals with that stuff. And on the artwork you have this skull with the bad and the good. It´s up to you to decide where to go. And it don´t has to go that deep, it´s also like you are going to a restaurant “Oh what should I take? Ah Pasta! Aaah Schnitzel? I don´t know. It can be also like that. (laughs)


You joined IN FLAMES five years ago again. Did you ever image when you left IN FLAMES back in the 90s, that you will be back in the band?


No, I didn´t think about that, because I was so busy making music and playing with other musicians. I love music and I love playing music. And I know the guys of IN FLAMES since... me and Jesper went to Highschool together, Björn lived in the same suburbs and me and Anders played in the same clubs, so it was all natural. When the called and said “Hey we need...” “Ok i´ll be there!”.


So why did you leave in the first place?


I wanted to play with GARDENIAN... different music i guess.


You shot two videos for “The End” and “The Truth” – and the videos are connected. What was the idea of it and how was it to shoot these clips.


It was very painless, because we are in the video for like 15 seconds, but we shot a new video, which I have really high hopes in it, but I can´t tell you yet for which song, but you will notice when it´s out. But I think you will like this video. I mean the previous videos where really cool, but different. And this one is acutally scary.


Ok, I´m looking forward to it. So all shows are special on this tour, but do you have a favourite Gig or did something really special happen, that you didn´t expect?


So far? I mean playing in a church is a little bit odd I think. I´m not the typical church-guy with tattoos including upside-down crosses and also one with “hail mary” and stuff like this. (smiles)
But I remember Bochum, Christus Kirche. I saw that they didn´t remove the benches, so I thought was a seated concert. We are not used to that. When we startet with the first riff, everyone was standing on the benches. So i knew, i can do the devil horn ...yes! And every one responded with it. (laughs)
So we stood in a church, played a metal song and this is acutally a devil-horn, so it was crazy, if you think about it now.


In the time when you were not in IN FLAMES, you for sure checked out their records and of course now you have to know the new material to play it live. So what do you think about the evolution IN FLAMES had in the last two decades?


I think it´s healthy to be on the move and also interesting, because you never know what to expect. Of course you have the IN FLAMES riffs and trademarks, but there will always be a twist to it. That´s very interessting for the listeners and fans and also for us, to be on the move, to be diverse and to be inspired as musicians, which is really important to be.


So I guess the tour life also changed over the years...


Yeah, we are getting older. We can´t party like we did. (laughs)
I mean this tour would not be possible ten years ago, because... I don´t want to use the word mature, but maybe it is like that.


Do you have a favourite record or favourite songs from the previous records on the ones you didn´t play on?


I am in the middle of it. I got songs from here to there. I love “Pinball Map”, that´s like JUDAS PRIEST on speed. (laughs)
I mean, i have my favourite songs and records.


What about your other band ENGEL? Is there something going on?


Yes! I just wrote a new album just before we started this tour. They are already recording stuff. I think we are done now and it will see light of day in September and it will be called “Abandon All Hope”. It´s quite interesting, it´s about old sailors they cannot swim, so when the ship sinks... abandon all hope, just go for it.


What about your old project with Anders called PASSENGER – did you ever talk about a second record?


Oh, oh, yeah... wow, we´ve been doing... that´s about, you can get pissed. We actually recorded 10 songs. We went to the studio recorded 10 songs and we said “Yeah, we gonna have a new album out.. yeah” and then we thought, this ain´t good, we skip it. Stupid, and sad. At least we have 10 songs, we are not happy with it, but we have them. (laughs)
That was actually already in 2004.


I really liked the first on.


Yes, it was fun to do that. It was a little bit alternative with a rockin vibe to it, but still heavy.
