Hi Tobbe, wie geht´s dir? Was tut sich gerade so?


Hallo Max! Im Moment bin ich gerade mitten in der Planung für die Tour. Als ich bei SABATON war, war das viel easier, das einzige an das ich denken musste, war das Gepäck. Nun mache ich alles, vom Buchen der Fährentickets bis zum Ausfüllen sämtlicher Formulare.




Du hast ja kürzlich dein Solo-Album "Sold My Soul" veröffentlicht. Bist zu mit den Reaktionen und Kritiken zufrieden?


Ich bin so glücklich. Ich hatte dieses Album schon lange fertig im Kopf und nun ist es Realität! Es fühlt sich so großartig an. Ich habe schon vor längerer Zeit für mich entschieden, wieder zurück zu den Wurzeln des Metals gehen zu wollen und nicht die "lauteste Produktion" zu suchen - die ja so modern ist heutzutage - sondern mich auf den dreckigen und geradlinigen Metal-in-your-face Sound zu konzentrieren. Die Reaktionen bisher sind überwältigend und ich glaube, dass viele Metalheads da draußen auf genau dieses Album gewartet haben. Es sind einfach Viele von dem immer gleich klingenden Digital-Sound übersättigt.


Wie bist du auf den Titel gekommen?


Tja, wenn du es dir von Kindesbeinen auf zum Ziel gesetzt hast, es im Metalbusiness zu etwas zu bringen, und sogar deine Farm darauf verwettet hast, kommt dir irgendwann der Gedanke, dass das nicht normal ist. Ich besaß nie ein Haus, keinen festen Job, hatte nie eine Familie oder Kinder, keine Hypothek oder was sonst so als normal gesehen wird als Erwachsener. Ganz im Gegenteil, ich wusste immer, dass das einfach nicht mein Ding ist. Mir war eben als Kind schon klar, was ich mit meinem Leben anfangen wollte. Und da habe ich mehr oder weniger symbolisch meine Seele verkauft. Ich habe Komfort, Sicherheit und ausreichend Geld gegen Rock´n´Roll eingetauscht. Das ist meine Wahl und wird es immer sein.


Und wer besitzt jetzt deine Seele und was hast du dafür bekommen?


Die Götter des Heavy Metal besitzen meine Seele *lacht* Aber ich habe dafür eine Menge Spaß bekommen.


Das Album ist komplett anders als als alles, das du mit SABATON gemacht hast - ist diese Art von Musik deine eigentliche Passion?


Exakt! Es ist komplett anders zu allem, das wir jemals mit SABATON gemacht haben. Es ist nichts falsch an SABATON, meiner Meinung nach ist es eine der besten Bands die es gibt, aber ich persönlich bin an einem Punkt angekommen, wo ich mich einfach begrenzt gefühlt habe, da ich nur in einem bestimmten Rahmen arbeiten konnte. Ich beschloss dann, in mich zu gehen und mich zu fragen: "Was hat mich als Kind als erstes an Metal fasziniert?" Und es war keinesfalls die aalglatte Produktion. Es ging um das Gefühl, die Roughness und die Attitüde.


Was sind deine Einflüsse, die Musik und Lyrics betreffend? Ich höre PRIEST, SABATH und MOTÖRHEAD heraus - liege ich da richtig?


Da liegst du absolut richtig, mein Freund. Als ich die Lieder für das Album schrieb, wusste ich, dass das nicht in eine "normale" Richtung gehen wird. Ich habe immer schon geschrieben und Songs produziert wie die meisten Produzenten heutzutage, auf einem Computer mit den ganzen Werkzeugen die einem zur Verfügung stehen wie Beat-Control, Auto-Tune usw. Aber Bands wie MOTÖRHEAD haben nie so einen Mist verwendet, oder? Also schrieb ich Songs, bei denen ich wusste, dass sie großartig klingen würden nur mit einer Gitarre, Drums, Keyboards und Bass. Ganz natürlich. Und ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass ich den Nagel auf den Kopf getroffen habe.




Du hast eben versucht, das Album so live und natürlich wie möglich zu produzieren, warum hast du dich dafür entschieden, in Zeiten, in denen jeder ans Limit gehen will?


Ich wollte einfach ehrlich sein und diese Attitüde in dem Moment einfangen. Ich glaube einfach, dass das der Hörer auch merkt. Zum Beispiel, wenn du den Refrain vier mal im selben Song kopierst, dann wird das Gefühl des ersten Refrains den kompletten Song dominieren. Und da glaube ich einfach, dass man etwas verliert, einfach nur dadurch, dass man in dem Gedanken blockiert ist, dass etwas perfekt funktionieren muss. Ich glaube, dass selbst wenn ein One-Take nicht perfekt ist, das das Gefühl und die Einstellung die transportiert werden, die die Nackenhaare aufstellt - nicht durch die Perfektion mit digitalen Werkzeugen. Lasse es wie es ist. Wir sind immer noch Menschen und ich glaube stark daran, dass wir auch Menschen beim Spielen zuhören wollen. Also, nicht zu vergessen, Musik ist auch Stille oder die Abwesenheit des Sounds. Also muss man nicht immer nach vorne gehen bis einem die Ohren bluten.


Du hast Nils-Patrik Johansson als Gast auf deinem Album. Wie kams dazu?


Das war durch das Dio-Feeling im Song "Wounded Knee". Der Song hat mich einfach an den DIO-Sound der 90er erinnert. Ich war immer ein großer Bewunderer von Nils-Patriks Stimme, darum blieb mir nichts anderes übrig, als mit ihm Kontakt aufzunehmen.


Es war eine riesige Überraschung, als du SABATON verlassen hast. Was waren deine Beweggründe?


Die Gründe waren die, die ich in den Brief an die Fans schrieb, als ich die Band verließ. Ich wollte ganz einfach meinen eigenen musikalischen Weg gehen. Und ich möchte keine 250 Tage im Jahr mehr unterwegs sein. Ich muss mich selbst ausdrücken und wie ich das jetzt tun kann, passt das perfekt für mich. Ich bin aktuell ziemlich glücklich.


Ich glaube, der Lifestyle mit SABATON hat sich auch total geändert mit über Shows pro Jahr...


Klar. Aber ich liebe nach wie vor jede Sekunde davon. Als Kind war es immer mein Traum und das Ziel im Leben. Um die Welt zu reisen mit meiner Gitarre, jede Nacht vor großem Publikum zu spielen. Ich bin wirklich dankbar und schaue mit Freude zurück auf diese wundervollen Zeiten, die ich zusammen mit SABATON hatte.


Vermisst du etwas aus der Zeit mit SABATON?


Ich vermisse die Burschen, die Crew. Die besten Jungs der Welt. Letztens ging ich zu einer ihrer Shows und ich musste mir einen Scherz erlauben, also als der letzte Song startete lief ich in ihre Garderobe und zog mir die Hose über den Arsch und als sie alle einer nach dem anderen hereinkamen... die Gesichter waren einfach unbezahlbar als sie mich da sitzen sahen an meinem Bier nippend :) Es wurde dann ein großartiger Abend nach der Show, wir redeten über Erinnerungen, lachten viel und hatten eine großartige Nacht. Ich vermisse sie.


Du machst auch Live-Shows mit deinen Solo-Sachen. Wie läufts und was können wir erwarten?


Klar! Wie schon besprochen gehen wir auf Tour mit BLOODBOUND. Es läuft großartig. Wir liefern eine energiegeladene Show und es geht um eines: alles ist live. Keine Click-Tracks, keine Backings oder prerecorded Zeug. Was du hörst kriegst du und es macht einfach soviel Spaß im Gegenzug dazu, wenn man an einen bestimmten Beat gebunden ist. Wenn die Chemie zwischen mir und Publikum passt, dann kann ich ewig dahinspielen bis ich das nächste Lied starten möchte, oder meine Gitarre und ich in einer Romanze enden, dann kann ich diese Loveaffair weitermachen, bis meine Finger bluten. So viel Spaß und so lebendig.


Du bist mit BLOODBOUND unterwegs als Special Guest und hilfst ihnen auch an der Rhythmusgitarre aus - klingt strapaziös, oder?


Klar, 26 Shows an 13 Tagen kann schon anstrengend sein. Aber wenn du das Gitarrespielen liebst, dann liebst du es genau so auf der Bühne zu stehen, du liebst die Fans, dann ist das eine Belohnung. Ich freue mich wirklich schon sehr darauf!




Was sind deine zukünftigen Pläne, Bands und Projekte?


Meine Pläne starten genau jetzt. Wir buchen Gigs und Festivals für den Sommer. Wir planen auch schon für den Herbst. Wir alles lieben es live zu spielen und wir wollen raus und für jeden von euch spielen... Also Gigs, Gigs, Gigs. Ich glaube, ich bin da einfach seit den SABATON-Tagen süchtig danach, haha.

Hi Thobbe, what´s going on at the moment?


Hello Max!!
At the moment I am all over things planning for the tour. Used to be pretty easy in Sabaton where the only thing basically one had to think of was the personal luggage. Now I am doing everything from booking ferry tickets to filling paper forms.


You recently released your Solo-Record “Sold My Soul”. How satisfied are you with it, the reactions and critics?


I am so happy Max. I had this album in my head for a long time, and now it´s put into reality and out there! It feels so great. I decided way back that it would be cool to go back to the roots of heavy metal, not searching for the ”loudest production” (which is so fashionable these days), but to focus on a dirty and straight forward metal-in-your-face sound. The reactions so far has been overwhelming, and I think this is something that metal heads out there has been wanting to hear for a long time. Many are kind of fed up with that same-same digital sound.


How came the idea of the title?


Well, if you´ve been hellbent since you childhood to make it in the metal scene, and you´ve basically bet your farm while doing it, you come to a point where you realize that something is out of the ordinary. I´ve never had a house, never had a steady job, never had kids, never had a mortgage and all those things that makes up for a ”normal” life. Instead I´ve always felt that that stuff ain´t for me. What I wanted to do was clear, even as a kid. This is where I symbolically connect selling your soul, because I traded comfort, security and money for rock ´n´ roll. But it´s my choice, always been.


Who owns your soul now and what did you get for it?


The gods of heavy metal *laughter* owns my soul. But I did get a whole lot of fun for it.


The material is completely different than the stuff you did with SABATON – can we guess, that this kind of music is your real passion?

Exactly. It´s completely different from anything like Sabaton. Not to say that there is anything wrong with Sabaton. In my opinion they are still one of the best bands out there, but I personally came to a point where I was feeling a bit limited because of the specific frame you had to work within. I decided to go deep inside myself and ask this question: ”What got me as a kid into metal in the first place?” It sure wasn´t the slick production. It was all about the feel, the roughness and the attitude.


What are your influences for the music and lyrics? I can hear stuff like Priest, Sabbath and Motörhead in it – am I right?


You´re absolutely spot on my friend. When I wrote the songs for the album I knew I wasn´t going to go in a ”normal” direction. I had historically always been writing and producing songs like most producers do these days, on a computer with all the tools you have at your disposal, such as beat control, auto-tune, etc. But bands like Motörhead never used that crap, right? So I wrote songs that I knew would sound maximized with only one guitar, drums, keys and a bass. Organic. And I am pretty sure I nailed it.


You tried to produce the record as live and natural as possible, why did you decide that in times when everyone tries to push the sound to the maximum?


I wanted to be honest and have that attitude captured in the moment. I think the listener subconsciously feel that it is for real. For example, if you copy and paste the chorus four times in the same song, the feel of the first one will represent all four choruses. Here is where I truly believe you lose something, simply by locking yourself into a mindset of ”what´s perfect works”. I believe that even though that one- take is not perfect, but it has the feel and attitude that makes your neck hair stand – don´t tweak it to perfection with digital tools. Leave it as it is. We are humans after all, and I strongly believe that we want to listen to humans play. Also, not to forget - music is also silence, or absence of sound. So don´t push the mix until your ears bleed.

You had Nils-Patrik Johansson as a guest on the record. How come?


I was after that Dio-feel in the song ”Wounded Knee”. That song actually reminds me of Dio´s sound from the nineties. I have always been a big admirer of Nils Patrik´s voice, so it was a natural thing to call him up.


It was a bit of a surprise when you left SABATON. Can you explain your reasons?


The reasons are the same as I stated to the fans when I wrote the letter about my leave. I simply wanted to go my own way musically. And I just could not fit that together with being away for 250 days per year. I need to express myself, and in this form where I am now it is really working out prefect. I am so happy.


I guess the lifestyle with SABATON was quite different than your time before, with more than 100 shows a year?


Of course. But still, I loved every second of it. As a kid this was for sure a dream and my goal in life. To travel the world with my guitar, playing to huge crowds every night. I am really thankful and looking back with joy at all the wonderful times we´ve had together in Sabaton.


Do you miss something from that time with SABATON?


I miss the boys in the band. The crew. Best guys in the world. As a matter of fact I went to one of their concerts the other night. I of course had to pull a prank on them so when the last song started I ran off to the dressing room and got butt naked. Believe me, when they came into the room one by one… their faces when they saw me sitting there sipping on a beer :-) We had a wonderful evening after the show, talking memories, lots of laughter and drinking and just having a super nice night. I miss them.


You also do live-shows with your solo-stuff. How is it going and what can people expect on these gigs?


Yes of course! As we speak we are headed out on a European tour together with Bloodbound. It´s going great. We have a highly energetic show, and here´s the thing: everything is live. No click-tracks, no backing or pre-recorded stuff. What you hear is what you get, and this is so much fun compared to being locked down to a certain beat. If I have a great feeling with the audience I can go on until whenever I feel like starting the next thing, or if me and my guitar suddenly end up in a romance, then we can keep that love affair going until my fingers bleed. So much fun, and so alive!


I heard you will join BLOODBOUND on tour as Special Guest and you will also help them out on rhythm guitar – sounds exhausting, isn´t it?


Well, doing 26 shows in 13 days can sound exhausting. But if you love to play guitar, you love to be on stage, you love the fans, then it´s only rewarding. I am so looking forward to this.


What are your future plans, bands and projects?


Future plans are taking form right now. We are booking gigs and festivals for the summer. We are also planning for the autumn. We all love to play live, and we want to go out there and play for each and every one of you, so… gigs gigs gigs. I guess I am addicted since the Sabaton days, haha.
