Vor nicht allzu langer Zeit trat der Musiker Tuomas Saukkonen an, um mit seinem Melodic Death Metal Projekt WOLFHEART die Musikwelt zu erobern. Was zuvor im stillen Kämmerlein geschaffen wurde, kann seit der Bandgründung im Jahr 2014 auch live genossen werden. Anlässlich der Europa-Tour mit INSOMNIUM und BARREN EARTH hatten wir die Gelegenheit mit Tuomas über die Tour, das neue Album und einige andere Dinge zu sprechen.


Hallo! Schön, dich hier in Wien zu treffen!
Wie geht es dir und wie war die Tour für euch bis jetzt?


Es war wirklich, wirklich gut. Es ist ein wirklich gutes Package, ich genieße dieses finnische Package, diese Bands und die finnische Crew, wir verstehen uns alle sehr gut miteinander. Und es ist echt cool zu sehen, wie sehr INSOMNIUM mit den Jahren gewachsen ist, es sind jetzt die meisten Shows auf dieser Tour ausverkauft, die wirklich gut für die Support-Bands ist. Wir können für ein größeres Publikum spielen, und es ist eine großartige Gelegenheit, neue Fans und Zuhörer zu finden. Bei allen Gigs hatten wir ein großes Publikum, somit ist es eine wirklich gute Tour für alle. Das würde in Finnland nie passieren, niemand kommt so früh in den Veranstaltungsort, sie trinken zuerst zu Hause, und dann gehen sie zum Veranstaltungsort, um die Hauptband zu sehen.




Das letzte Mal habe ich euch auf der Bühne mit SWALLOW THE SUN und ADIMIRON gesehen. Was ist der Unterschied für dich zwischen diesen beiden Touren?


Jetzt kann ich mich mehr auf die Musik konzentrieren. Das damals war eine ziemlich anstrengende Sache, zugleich Tour-Manager zu sein, und live zu spielen. Jetzt habe ich wirklich Zeit, mich auf meine eigenen Gigs zu konzentrieren. Jetzt ist es friedlich für mich. Ich bin nun nur ein Musiker, und normalerweise muss ich an niemand anderes denken und Babysitter für die anderen Musiker sein. Es ist jetzt viel entspannter.


Hast du es jemals bereut, die Arbeit mit deinen früheren Bands wie BLACK SUN AEON zu beenden?


Nein, es gab gute Gründe zu diesem Zeitpunkt. Wir haben im Sommer eine besondere BLACK SUN AEON-Show in der Schweiz gespielt, und es war wirklich cool, die alten Songs noch einmal zu spielen, und jetzt brauche ich in den nächsten Jahren nicht mehr an die Band denken. Wir werden in diesem Sommer auf einem finnischen Festival eine Sonder-Show mit BEFORE THE DAWN spielen, es gibt nur eine, und keine Club-Shows. Aber ich vermisse die Musik, ich vermisse die Songs, ich vermisse aber nicht die Band oder die Probleme, die wir hatten. Natürlich gibt es eine emotionale Verbindung mit den Songs, ich habe sie gern gespielt, aber ich möchte nicht, dass die Band weiterbesteht.


2014 hast du beschlossen, WOLFHEART in eine Band zu umzuwandeln, und im Jahr 2015 hattest du ein sehr erfolgreiches Jahr mit Tourneen und dem Album „Shadow World". Waren die sehr positiven Reaktionen eine Überraschung für dich?


Natürlich erhofft man gute Kritiken und gutes Feedback vom Publikum, wenn man seine eigene Musik veröffentlicht, aber es war wirklich gut. Ich hatte einen geheimen, strikten Plan für WOLFHEART. Ich habe WOLFHEART eineinhalb Jahre vorher geplant, bevor ich BEFORE THE DAWN und die anderen aufgegeben habe. Als ich angekündigt habe, dass ich BEFORE THE DAWN begraben werde, hatte ich bei der gleichen Ankündigung das erste Lied von WOLFHEART fertig. Ich hatte wirklich einen strengen Plan, wie die Dinge ablaufen sollten, was ich tun musste, wenn Dinge geschehen. Ich folge seit drei Jahren diesem Plan. Und es läuft wirklich gut. Das Musik-Geschäft ist ein wirklich verzwicktes Geschäft. Es bringt einen nicht wirklich viel weiter, je härter man arbeitet. Man muss am richtigen Ort zur richtigen Zeit sein, und die richtigen Leute finden, also war auch eine Portion Glück dabei. Es ist eine positive Überraschung, zu sehen, wie die Dinge eigentlich laufen.


Hat dir die Zeit gefallen, als du nur im Studio warst und Musik geschaffen hast?


Ich bevorzuge es, anstatt zu touren, wenn ich mich entscheiden müsste. Schreiben von Musik und einem Album hat viel mehr von Strukturen oder Skizzen oder solchen Dingen an sich. Es gibt immer eine Frist, die mich normalerweise nicht interessiert. Ich habe das Privileg mit meinem Label, dass sie die Alben wenn ich sie fertig habe veröffentlichen, und nicht andersherum, wie es bei anderen Labels üblich ist. Die Studioarbeit ist also ziemlich entspannt und einfach und cool, und wenn das Album fertig ist, hat man viel mehr zu tun, wie etwa mit Interviews und Promo, und es gibt viele Termine. Man plant Dinge, die ein halbes Jahr vor einem liegen, man sucht nun nach Veranstaltungsorten für die Tour für den nächsten Herbst. Wir sind fast voll für den Sommer gebucht. Es ist eine völlig andere Zeit vor dem Release und danach. Ich bevorzuge die Zeit vorher, Musik zu machen und nicht an etwas anderes denken zu müssen.




Wie wichtig sind Live-Konzerte für dich?


Es kommt darauf an! Ich denke, ich könnte leben, ohne live zu spielen, aber ich würde nicht in der Lage sein, mit dem Schreiben von Musik über die Runden zu kommen. Ich bin sehr heikel, weil ich in meinem ganzen Leben nie betrunken war. Ich trinke niemals Bier vor den Shows, so verzeihe ich viele Dinge nicht, und ich bin sehr empfindlich was den Sound auf der Bühne betrifft. Wenn der wirklich beschissen ist, und ich nicht höre was ich tue oder die anderen Jungs spielen, dann fühle ich mich grauenhaft auf der Bühne. Ich sehe mich nicht als Entertainer. Und ich hoffe, das Publikum fühlt sich von der Musik unterhalten. Wenn der Sound wirklich schrecklich ist, ist es schwierig, sich mit der Musik zu verbinden. Dann fühle ich mich auf dem falschen Platz, und ich zähle die Lieder bis zum Ende. Aber wenn der Klang gut ist und das Publikum gut ist, ist alles in einer ausgewogenen Balance. In den besten Shows kann es ein fast religiöses Gefühl geben, aber in der schlechtesten Zeit zähle ich die Sekunden, gehe von der Bühne und sage: „Mir reicht es."


Welcher Musiker hat dich inspiriert, Musik zu machen?


Ich bin kaum von anderen Musikern inspiriert. Seit acht Jahren habe ich kein Stereo-System zu Hause. Ich höre nur Musik im Auto oder im Fitnessstudio. Ich höre keine neue Musik, es gibt bestimmte Alben, die mich in die richtige Stimmung bringen. Ich höre nicht wirklich Musik, aber ich sehe viel Live-Musik durch das Touren, und bei der Arbeit als Festival-Produzent und Bühnen-Manager in Finnland. Für mich sind mehr die Natur und meine persönlichen Gedanken inspirierend für Musik.




Jetzt wirst du bald ein neues Album mit dem Titel "Tyhjyys" veröffentlichen. Was ist die Grundidee hinter dem Titel und dem Album?


"Tyhjyys" ist ein sehr heikles Wort für Menschen außerhalb Finnlands. Der Grund, weshalb ich diesen Namen wählte, war, weil das finnische Wort "Tyhjyys" als Nichts oder Leere oder etwas Ähnliches übersetzt werden kann, aber keine der Übersetzungen das gleiche Gefühl widerspiegelt wie das finnische Wort. Es ist viel mehr als dieses Wort, es ist ein sehr emotionales Gefühl, also musste ich das finnische Wort wählen. Es ist eine andere Sichtweise und Annäherung an diese bestimmte Leere des Nichts. Es gibt ein besonderes Gefühl im Album, und jeder Song ist eine tiefe Interpretation des Themas. Die Songs sind nicht miteinander verknüpft, sondern kommen aus derselben Quelle.


Die meisten Texte sind auf Englisch. Warum hast du dich für diese Sprache entschieden?


Ich hatte ein Projekt in der Vergangenheit, das komplett finnisch war, aber ich möchte nicht so viele finnische Texte zu schreiben. Ein Song pro Album ist ziemlich gut. Auf dem Debütalbum „Winterborn" war der Winter das Hauptthema, „Shadow World" hatte verschiedene Themen, aber sie folgten demselben Weg, und irgendwann merkt man, dass alle Wörter und Reime verwendet bereits verwendet wurden und wenn man die Sprache wechselt, öffnen sich lyrisch viele Türen. Aber mit dem neuen Titellied wäre es nicht möglich gewesen, dies ins Englische zu übersetzen. So viele Zeilen in diesem Text haben eine tiefe finnische Bedeutung.


Warum hast du dich entschieden, in deiner Musik diese Mischung aus Härte und Weichheit zu verwenden?


Das kommt daher, dass ich diesen Kontrast in all meinen Bands benutzte. Es ist noch mehr hervorgehoben, denn ich wollte das letzte Album von BEFORE THE DAWN mit dem Style von BLACK SUN AEON kombinieren. Wie ein melodischer Death Metal kombiniert mit Doom. Für mich, um in der Lage sein zu schreiben, braucht man einige Highlights, man braucht den Kontrast, was es tatsächlich schwer macht. Also muss es die beiden Seiten geben. Ich mag das wirklich, mit akustischen Instrumenten und akustischen Lines in den Songs. Die Musik erzählt mehr eine Geschichte wenn sie auf und ab geht. Es ist interessanter.




Welche Erwartungen hast du an das neue Album?


Ich hoffe natürlich, dass die Leute es mögen werden, wir werden in ein paar Monaten sehen, wie es sein wird. Ich hoffe wirklich, dass die Band weiter voranschreitet, wie sie es bisher getan hat. Ich denke nicht zu viel darüber nach. Es ist in der Hand des Labels, der Promo-Unternehmen und der Agenturen, und sie machen ihre Arbeit. Jetzt habe ich mehr Fokus auf dem Spielen meiner Shows. Und bald werde ich anfangen, neue Musik zu schreiben. Es ist wie ein Zyklus zwischen dem Songwriter und den Zuhörern. Es ist ein neues Album für die Zuhörer, aber ich habe dieses Album vor einem Jahr gemacht. Deshalb werden die Leute frische Musik hören, und gleichzeitig werde ich mit dem Schreiben neuer Musik für das nächste Album beginnen.


Welches war das bisher großartigste Konzert für dich?


Wir haben dieses finnische Metal-Fest, Finland Fest, in Tokio vor eineinhalb Jahren gespielt. Das ist immer richtig geil, wenn man dort spielen kann. Wir kamen zwei Tage früher und fuhren wieder einen Tag später zurück, damit konnten wir auch die Stadt sehen. Es ist riesig dort, so dass man Zeit haben muss. Deshalb waren wir sehr froh, diesen Luxus zu haben. Es wäre schrecklich gewesen, so weit zu reisen und Tokio nicht zu sehen. Es war eine wirklich coole Reise, und es war fast am Anfang der Band, also war es super für uns.


Gibt es einen besonderen Ort, an dem ihr ein Konzert spielen wollt?


Ich möchte wirklich nach Australien gehen, ein schwieriges Land das wirklich weit weg ist. Die Städte sind alle an den Küsten und die Entfernungen sind wirklich extrem. Das wäre aber echt cool. Wir haben auch noch nie in den USA gespielt, aber es gibt wirklich Hoffnungen, dass das mit WOLFHEART in naher Zukunft passieren wird.




Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Nach dieser Tour machen wir eine Mini-Tour in Finnland, eine Mini-Tour in Spanien und Portugal, wir werden mit INSOMNIUM nach Schweden und Norwegen reisen, dann startet die Festival-Saison. Ich suche noch eine Tour für das Ende dieses Jahres. Also habe ich bis zum nächsten Weihnachten ziemlich viel auf dem Papier geplant.

Hello! Nice to meet you here in Vienna!
How are you and how was the tour for you until yet?


It´s been really, really good. It´s a really good package, I really enjoy this Finnish package, these bands and the Finnish crew, we all go together really well. And it´s really cool to see, how big INSOMNIUM has been growing to the years, and it´s now selling out most of the shows on the tour, which is really good for the supporting bands. We can play for bigger audiences and it´s a big opportunity to find new fans and listeners. At all the gigs we had a big audience, so it´s a really good tour for all. It would never happen in Finland, nobody comes that early in the venue, they get drunk at home, and then they go to the venue, to see the main band.


Last time I have seen you on stage with SWALLOW THE SUN and ADIMIRON. What is the difference for you between these two tours?


Now I can focus more at the music. This was a quite exhausting thing, to be a tour manager at the same time when we are playing. Now I have really time to focus on my own gigs. Now it´s all peaceful for me. I´m just a musician and normally I have not to think on somebody else, and be a babysitter for the other musicians. It´s much more relaxed now.


Did you ever regret, to end the work with your former bands like BLACK SUN AEON?


No, there was good reasons at that time. We actually played one special BLACK SUN AEON-show in Switzerland in summer, and it was really cool to play that old songs once more, and now I don´t need to think about the band for years now. We will play a special show with BEFORE THE DAWN this summer in one Finnish festival, it´s only one and no club-shows are coming. But I miss the music, I miss the songs, I don´t particularly miss the bands or the problems we had. Of course, there is an emotional connection with the songs, I liked to play them, but I don´t want to have the band around anymore.


2014 you decided to change WOLFHEART into a band, and in 2015 you had a very successful year with touring and the album “Shadow World”. Were the very positive reactions a surprise for you?


Of course, you are expecting good reviews and good feedback from the audience when you do your own music, but it´s going really well. I had a quiet, strict plan for WOLFHEART. I was only planning WOLFHEART 1,5 years before I dispend BEFORE THE DAWN and the other ones. When I announced, that I will bury BEFORE THE DAWN, at the same announcement I had the first song of WOLFHEART. So I had a really strict plan how things should go, what I have to do when things happens. I´ve been following the plan now for three years. But it´s going really well. Music-business is a really tricky business. It doesn´t really take you much further, how harder you work. You have to be on the right place in the right time and find the right people, so it has been a good luck also. A positive surprise, to see how the things are actually going.


Did you like the time, when you was only in studio and created music?


I prefer that instead of touring, if I would have to choose. Writing music and do an album has much more of structures or sketchuals and stuff. There is always a deadline, which I usually don´t care about. I have the privilege with the label, that they release the albums when I have done them, and not in the other way, like at other labels. So the studio-work is quite relaxed, and easy and chilled time, and when the album is ready, you have a lot more to do, like interviews and promo, and there are lot of deadlines. You are planning things that are half a year ahead, we are now seeking venues for the tour for the next fall, we are almost booked full for the summer. It´s a complete different time before the release and after. I prefer the time before, making music and not to think on anything else.


How important are live-concerts for you?


It depends! I think, I could live without playing live, but I wouldn´t be able to manage this with writing music. I´m quite sensitive for everything, because I don´t get drunk ever in my life. I don´t have some beers before the shows, so I don’t excuse lot of things, and I´m really sensitive of the sound on the stage. If this is really crappy and I´m not hearing what I am doing or the other guys are doing, then I feel atrocious on the stage. I don´t see myself as an entertainer, I rather go there and play my music. For the audience, I hope they feel entertained, but because of the music. If the sound is really horrible, it´s really difficult to connect with the music. Then I feel myself on the false place, and I count the songs until the end. But when the sound is good and the audience is good, everything is in a great balance. In the best shows it can be an almost religious kind of feeling, but in the worst time you are counting seconds, go from the stage and say: “I´m done”.


Which musician or band inspired you to make music?


I´m not much inspired by other musicians. I haven´t had any stereo-system for past eight years. I only listen to music in the car or at the gym. I´m not listening to any new music, there are certain albums to get me in the right mind. I don´t really listen to music, but I see lot of live-music by touring and working, and as festival producer and stage manager in Finland. To me is more like nature and my personal thought inspiring for music.


Now you will soon release a new album with the title “Tyhjyys”. What is the basic idea behind the title and the album?


“Tyhjyys” is a very tricky word for people outside Finland. The reason why I choosed that name was, because the Finnish word “Tyhjyys” can be translated as emptiness or void or something similar, but no of the translations carry the same feeling than the Finnish word. It is much more than that word, it´s a very emotional feeling, so I had to choose the Finnish word. It´s a different point of view and approaches to this certain tide of emptiness. There is a kind of feeling in the album, and each song is a deep interpretation of the subject. The songs are not linked together but they are coming from the same source.


Most of your lyrics are in English. Why did you decide to use this language?


I had one project in the past that was completely Finnish, but I have no need to write that much of Finnish lyrics. One song per album is pretty good. At the debut album “Winterborn” winter was the main theme, “Shadow World” had different themes, but they were following the same path, and at some time you realize, that you used all words and rhymes, and when you change the language, you open lot of doors lyrically. But with the new title-song, it would not have been possible, to translate this into English. So many lines in this lyrics have a deep Finnish meaning.


Why did you decide to do in your music this mix of hardness and softness?


It becomes, I have been using this contrast in all of my bands. It´s even more underlined, because my intention was to combine the last album of BEFORE THE DAWN with the style of BLACK SUN AEON. Like a melodic death metal combine with dooms. To me, to be able to write you need some lighters, you need the contrast, what actually makes it heavy. So, there have to be the both sides. I really like that, using acoustic-instruments and acoustic pathways in the songs. The music is more telling a story when it goes up and down. It´s more interesting.


What are your expectations to the new album?


I hope of course, that people will like it, we will see it in a few months, how it´s gonna go. I really hope that the band continues to go forward, as it has been now. I don´t think too much about it. It´s in the hand of the label, of the promo-companies and the agencies, and they do their jobs. Now I have more focus on playing my shows. And soon I will start writing new music. It´s like a cycle between the songwriter and the listeners. It´s a new album for the listeners, but I did that album a year ago. So people will hear fresh music, and same time I will start writing new music the next album.


Which was the greatest concert for you until yet?


We played this Finnish metal-fest, Finland Fest, in Tokio 1,5 years ago. That´s always really cool, when you can play here. We went there two days ahead and were going back one day later, so we could go around and see the city. It´s quite a big place, so you need to have time. So we was very glad to have time. It would be terrible do go so far away and not to see Tokio. It was a really cool trip, and it was nearly at the beginning of the band, so it was great.


Is there a special place where you want to play a concert?


I would really like to go to Australia, which is really tricky, difficult country, really far away. The cities are all at the coasts and the distances are really bad. That would be really cool. We never had played at the USA, and there are really hopes, that it would happen with WOLFHEART in the near future.


What are your plans for the future?


After this tour we will make a mini-tour in Finland, a mini-tour in Spain and Portugal, we will go to Sweden and Norway with INSOMNIUM, then we will have the festival-season. I´m looking for another tour at the end of this year. So I have planned pretty much on the paper until next Christmas.
