Das Dani Filths Sideprojekt DEVILMENT erwies sich nicht als Eintagsfliege, sondern ist mittlerweile fixer Bestandteil im musikalischen Leben des CRADLE OF FILTH-Fronters. Kürzlich erschien das zweite Album der Truppe, und wir hatten die Gelegenheit, Dani Filth einige Fragen zum Album und seinem Wirken bei DEVILMENT und seiner Stammband zu stellen.

Hallo! Schön, die Möglichkeit zu haben, erneut mit dir zu sprechen. Letztes Jahr haben wir über CRADLE OF FILTH und das Album "Hammer Of The Witches" gesprochen. Wie waren die Reaktionen auf dieses Album und wie war die Tour?

Toll, wirklich, wirklich gut! Wir gehen im Dezember in das Studio für ein neues Album, wir sind sehr beschäftigt. Die Tour war super, wir tourten für sieben, acht Wochen in Amerika, haben die 70.000 Tons of Metal-Kreuzfahrt mitgemacht, auch eine Menge Festivals, und wir planen eine Welt-Tour. Wir wollen also ein neues Album machen, während alles noch frisch in unserem Gedächtnis ist. Vor unserem letzten Festival im Jahr reisten wir in die Tschechische Republik, weil dort zwei unserer Mitglieder leben, dort ist alles wirklich billig. Es ist sehr schön in Brünn, und es machte einfach nur Spaß, mit der Band für eine Woche abzuhängen, und zwar mal nicht im Tourbus.

Auf eurer Tour wurdet ihr von NE OBLIVISCARIS supportet. Warum habt ihr euch entschlossen, mit ihnen zu touren, und war das eine gute Kombination für dich?

Wir nahmen sie nach Amerika mit, und in Amerika waren auch die BUTCHER BABIES als Special Guest mit dabei, und NE OBLIVISCARIS waren völlig neu in Amerika. Ja, es ist toll mit ihnen, es macht Spaß, sie sind nette Leute. Wir haben sie kennengelernt, als wir vor ein paar Jahren in Australien auf Tournee waren, und wir mussten eine Band aus einem australischen Wettbewerb aussuchen. Da gab es ein paar Bands, und NE OBLIVISCARIS supporteten uns für ein paar Tage, und sie waren einfach unglaublich.

Ihr wart mit dieser Tour in Dornbirn. Wie war das für dich?

Es war eine seltsame Tour, Dornbirn war schön, es ist in den Bergen. Wir hatten keine Zeit, in die Stadt zu gehen, aber es war schön, ein guter Gig und ein seltsamer Ort, um dort zu spielen.

Jetzt ist der Fokus auf DEVILMENT! Wie war der Beginn dieser Band mit dem letzten Album "The Great And Secret Show"?

Im Grunde haben wir eine großartige Reaktion auf "The Great And Secret Show" bekommen, es war etwas völlig Neues für die Leute. Davor hatten wir eine Band namens TEMPLE OF THE BLACK MOON, aber eines der Mitglieder ging zu VOLBEAT und die Manager wollten kein Album machen. Deshalb war es für die Fans von CRADLE OF FILTH auf jeden Fall eine neue Sache, mich in einer anderen Band zu sehen. Eine Menge Leute dachten, das würde nur meinem Ego dienen, aber es ist eine richtige Band. Wenn sie das nicht wäre, hätten wir nicht zwei Alben geschrieben. "The Mephisto Waltzes" widerspiegelt im Grunde genommen was wir als die Stärke des ersten Albums sahen, und wir nahmen das als Basis für ein neues Album. Es gibt mehr weibliche Vocals, es liegt mehr Fokus auf der Gitarrenarbeit, wir bekamen einen neuen Schlagzeuger, unser Road-Drummer schlug uns unseren neuen Schlagzeuger vor, nur weil er zu viel Arbeit hatte. Er ging zurück nach Hause und konnte die Zeit nicht aufbringen, wollte uns aber nicht hängen lassen. Das ist alles, was wir getan haben. Wir haben die Stärken des ersten Albums genommen, aber wir nahmen den DEVILMENT-Sound, und das Album steht nun für das, wie DEVILMENT klingt. Es gibt eine Art Slash Metal, traditionellen Metal, punkiges Zeug wie von BAD RELIGION, auch eine Industrial-Note, da sind viele verschiedene Sachen enthalten.

Das neue Album heißt "The Mephisto Waltzes". Gibt es da eine Verbindung zu Goethes "Faust"?

Ja gibt es, FRANZ LISZT hat sich offensichtlich mit "Faust" beschäftigt, und „Faust“ ist ein besonderer Charakter, es gibt viele Gründe, warum wir uns dafür entschieden haben. Das kam daher, dass wir das Album-Cover hatten aber nicht wirklich einen Titel. Dann ergab sich alles von selbst, es "Devilment zwei" zu nennen war keine Aufforderung zu dieser Musik zu Tanzen. Und ich hatte ein Lied mit dem Namen "Mephisto Waltz", und "The Mephisto Waltzes" war ein Horrorfilm in Amerika in den 70er Jahren, als die Horrorfilme wie "Rosemary’s Baby" herauskamen. Es war ein kaltes Mordgeheimnis, das auch seinen Titel von LISZT erhielt, denn der Protagonist des Films, die Hauptfigur, ist ein Pianist und verkauft seine Seele dem Teufel, und so kamen all diese Dinge zusammen. Es ist wie eine Interpretation. Die Lieder und die Titel der Lieder sind alle mit dem Wesen von DEVILMENT verbunden, der ein mysteriöses Böses ist. Alles ist Satan, eine Art machiavellischer, geheimnisvoller Dämon.

Was ist die allgemeine Botschaft der Songs?

Nun, ich denke, es gibt viele darin, es gibt eine Menge menschliche Emotionen, viel Aktivität und Obsession, auch einen Teil zum negativen Aspekt einiger Dinge. Es gibt eine Menge über Verbrechen, Wiedergeburt, Liebe sowie Obsession. Ich denke, es ist ein sehr emotionales Album, und irgendwie wird alles zu einem bunten Diorama. Es gibt immer den Protagonisten in den Songs, es geht um den Kampf gegen alles, da sind einige Emotionen die verstärkt werden, wie in "Faust und Mephistopheles".

Lauren Francis singt in einigen Liedern mit dir! Magst du diese Kombination von Härte und Weichheit?

Ich denke, es funktioniert wirklich gut, und um fair zu sein, das gibt es bei jedem Lied, aber ich möchte sagen, dass es ganz gut gemischt ist, jedoch denke ich dass drei oder vier Songs sehr hart herüber kommen. Diese waren sehr großartig um diese Richtung zu bekommen, aber am Ende stellte sich heraus, dass beide Harmonien sehr gut waren, so dass wir beschlossen, die eine Hälfte von ihr und die andere Hälfte von mir zu machen. Und es hat gut funktioniert. Dadurch ergibt sich bei vier, fünf Songs diese sehr starke emotionale Richtung mit einer starken weiblichen Prägung von ihr.
Es gibt eine Ausgabe des Albums mit elf Songs, aber auch eine mit zwei Songs extra, durch die alles mehr Schema bekommt und ein Gefühl für das Album. Leider haben wir zwei Songs hinten anstehen lassen müssen. Aber gut wenn die Leute die Art und Weise mögen, wie es angelegt ist, und ich sehe nie Leute, die nur die normalen Versionen kaufen, wenn sie eine Sonderausgabe haben können. Wenn ich gehe, um Alben zu kaufen, was ich regelmäßig mache, nehme ich immer die Sonderausgabe, ich will die nicht wegen nur ein paar Euro verpassen.

Gibt es Pläne für eine Tour mit DEVILMENT, und kommt ihr auch nach Österreich?

Es gibt nur elf Tage in Großbritannien, momentan warten wir darauf, die Schaffung eines neuen CRADLE OF FILTH Albums zu beginnen, also müssen wir dafür arbeiten. Und hoffentlich werden wir rechtzeitig vor der Festival-Saison fertig. Im Moment warten wir auf einen Buchungsagenten, der auch der CRADLE OF FILTH Buchungsagent ist, und wir hoffen, dass wir die gleichen Festivals mit DEVILMENT und CRADLE OF FILTH machen können, und hoffentlich eine kleine europäische Tour mit DEVILMENT, denn die CRADLE OF FILTH Welttournee wird im September starten. Hoffentlich kommen wir da wieder nach Österreich und nach Wien.

Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?

Ich denke, dass ich vorläufig alles erwähnte was DEVILMENT betrifft, aber es gibt Pläne für ein Voice-over für einen Horror-Comic, das sehr Vampir-lastig ist. Aber der Schwerpunkt ist, mit CRADLE OF FILTH ins Studio zu gehen.

Und schließlich, einige letzte Worte an eure Fans?

Ich danke Euch, dass Ihr mich unterstützt und mir dabei geholfen habt, dieses DEVILMENT-Projekt zu machen, und ich hoffe, dass die Leute das neue Album genießen werden. Schaut euch die neuen Videos an, und ich habe schon erwähnt, dass Fans von CRADLE OF FILTH es anders finden werden, aber ich denke, sie werden es mögen, wie das erste Album. Danke für die große Unterstützung und hoffentlich werde ich euch alle in Österreich im Jahr 2017 sehen.

Hello! Nice to have the possibility, to talk again with you. Last year we talked about CRADLE OF FILTH and the album "Hammer Of The Witches". How were the reactions to this album and how was the tour?

Great, really really good! We are going back to the studio in December for a new album, we are very busy, the tour was great, we went to American for seven, eight weeks, did the 70.000 tons of metal cruise, did a bunch of festivals as well, and we are planning a world tour. So we want to get a new album written while its fresh in our memory. Before our last festival in the year we went to Czech Republic, because that’s where two of our members live, obviously it´s really cheap, but it’s very nice in Brno, and it´s just fun to hang out with the band for a week not in the tourbus.

On your tour you was supported by NE OBLIVISCARIS. Why did you decide to go on tour with them, and was this a good combination for you?

We took them to America with us as well, and in America there were BUTHCHER BABIES like a special guest, NE OBLIVISCARIS were completely new to America. Yes, it´s great, it´s fun, nice people, we met them when we toured in Australia a few years back, and we have to pick a band for like an Australian competition, there were a few bands and NE OBLIVISCARIS supported us for a couple of days and they were just amazing.

You have been with this tour only in Dornbirn. How was this gig for you?

It was a strange tour, Dornbirn was lovely, it´s in the mountains. We had no time to went to the town, but it was lovely, a good gig and a strange place to play there.

Now is the focus on DEVILMENT! How was the start for this band with the last album "The Great And Secret Show"?

Basically we got a great reaction for the "The Great And Secret Show", it was kind a novelty for people, obviously we had a band named TEMPLE OF THE BLACK MOON , but one of the members turned to VOLBEAT and managers didn´t want to release an album. So it anyways was a new thing for the fans of CRADLE OF FILTH, to see me in a different band. A lot of people thought it was an ego out of one, but actually this is a proper band. If it wasn’t we wouldn’t be writing album two "The Mephisto Waltzes", we basically took what we considered to be the strength of the first record, and brought them forward to a new record. There are more female vocals, there is more focus on guitar work, we got a new drummer, our road drummer suggested our new drummer, just because he had a lot of work, and moved house and couldn’t commit the time, and don’t wanna let us down. That’s all we did, we took the strengths of the first album, but we got the sound of DEVILMENT, and the album is demonstrated for that and this is what DEVILMENT sounds like. There´s almost slash metal, traditional metal, punky stuff like BAD RELIGION, it is a industrial touch, there is a different kind of stuff in there.

The new album is called "The Mephisto Waltzes". Is there a connection to Goethes "Faust"?

Yes there is, FRANZ LISZT obviously concerned some stuff with “Faust”, and also “Faust” is a special character, there are a lot of reasons why we decided to use this. It came about, the album cover didn’t really have a title, and then it kind suggested itself, and calling it “Devilement two” was not the call for dancing to this music. And I had a song called “Mephisto waltz”, and “The Mephisto Waltzes” was an horror movie in America in the 70s, when the cold horror films came out like “Rosemary´s Baby”. It was a cold murder mystery, which also took its title from LISZT, because the protagonist of the film, the main character, he´s a pianist and sells his soul to the devil, see all these things just came together. It´s like an interpretation, the songs and the titles of the songs are all linked to the act of DEVILMENT, which is mysterious evil, it´s all Satan, it’s a sort of Machiavellian mysterious demon.

What is the general message of the songs?

Well I think there´s a lot underneath everything, there´s a lot of human emotion, a lot of actuation and obsession, there´s also a part from the negative aspect of some things. There´s a lot of crimes, rebirth, love as well, obsession, I think it is a very emotive album, obviously, they turn it into a colourful diorama. There is always the protagonist in the songs, it´s about struggle against all, these are some emotions that are amplified, like in “Faust and Mephistopheles”.

Lauren Francis is in some songs singing with you! Do you like this combination of hardness and softness?

I think it works really well, to be fair, It´s still on every song, but I like to say its quite mixed, I think about three or four songs work very hard. But they to get this course, they were very big, but in the end this, both harmonies were very good, so we decided to make the course half of hers and half of mine. And it worked well, so a good four, five songs have this very strong emotive course with a strong female lead attached to it.
There is an edition of the album with the eleven songs, but also one with two songs extra, it all gets a pattern and a feel for the album and unfortunately, we had two songs to left behind. But if the people like the way it´s laid out, and I never see people buying just the normal when they can get a special edition. When I go out to get albums, which I regularly do, I always go for the special edition, I don’t wanna miss it for just a few euros.

Are there plans for a tour with DEVILMENT, and will you also come to Austria?

There´s eleven days only in Great Britain, at the present, we are waiting for going back and creating a new CRADLE OF FILTH album, so we have to work for that, and hopefully we will be finished in time before the festival season. So at the moment we are waiting for a booking agent, which is also the CRADLE OF FILTH booking agent, and we hope we can do the same festivals with DEVILMENT and CRADLE OF FILTH, and hopefully a small European tour with DEVILMENT, because the CRADLE OF FILTH world tour is going to kick off in September, so hopefully we are coming back to Austria and to Vienna.

What are your plans for the future?

I think I mentioned everything DEVILMENT-wise in the time being, but there are plans for a voice-over for a horror-comic, it´s like a vampire-overload. But the main focus is to go with CRADLE OF FILTH to the studio.

And finally, some last words to your fans?

Just thank you for supporting me, and help me to do this DEVILMENT work, and I hope the people will enjoy the new album. Check out the new videos, and I mentioned fans of CRADLE OF FILTH will find it different, but I think they will like it, like the first album. Thanks for the big support and hopefully I will see you all in Austria in 2017.
