EPICA zählt zu den bekanntesten und beliebtesten Bands im Bereich des Symphonic Metal. Kürzlich veröffentlichten die Niederländer ihr neuestes Album "The Holographic Principle" und wir ließen uns die Möglichkeit nicht entgehen und stellten dazu Gitarrist Isaac Delahaye einige Fragen.


Hallo! Wie geht es dir und wo bist du gerade?


Ich bin in Belgien. Ich bin der einzige aus Belgien in der Band.




Hast du im Moment eine sehr stressige Zeit?


Es ist ein wenig stressig, weil meine Freundin und ich ein Haus bauen. Es ist sehr hart für meine Hände, es ist eine ungewöhnliche Arbeit, aber in ein paar Wochen werden wir auf Tour gehen, deshalb muss ich auf meine Hand aufpassen. Es ist ein Rennen gegen die Zeit, aber ich denke, dass in ein paar Monaten alles fertig sein wird - das Ende ist nahe!


Du bist vor sieben Jahren zu EPICA gekommen. Wie sehr hat sich seitdem dein Leben verändert?


Es hat sich sehr verändert! Vor EPICA habe ich bei GOD DETHRONED gespielt, das ist eine Melodic Death Metal Band, womit das Genre sehr unterschiedlich ist. Wir spielten kleinere Shows und konnten nicht auf einem Niveau wie EPICA touren. Es ist wie ein großes Setup, und in den sieben Jahren wurde es größer und größer, und es scheint wie der Höhepunkt unserer Karriere. Ich bin einfach nur glücklich daran teilzunehmen, und wir sind wirklich stolz auf das neue Album und ich denke, es ist definitiv das Beste, das wir in diesem Moment machen konnten.


Gibt es eine große Freundschaft zwischen den Bandmitgliedern?


Es ist schwierig wirklich Freunde zu sein, weil wir nicht diese Art von Band sind, die in der gleichen Stadt wohnt, sich in einem Pub trifft und sagt: "Hey, fangen wir mit einer Band an!". EPICA basiert auf vier verschiedenen Ländern - ich lebe in Belgien, Simone Simons lebt in Deutschland, Mark Jansen lebt in Italien und der Rest lebt in Holland. Also sind wir in einer Band, halten zusammen und es ist wirklich toll, mit jedem von ihnen zusammen zu sein. Aber ich würde sie nicht meine Freunde nennen wie andere, die ich kenne, seit ich 12 oder 16 Jahre war. Meine Bandkollegen sind nicht meine lebenslangen Freunde - ich habe einige und ich bin wirklich glücklich darüber.


Euer neues Album trägt den Titel "The Holographic Principle". Was ist die Grundidee hinter dem Albumtitel und den Texten?


Es ist kein Konzeptalbum, in dem sich die Texte in einer bestimmten Weise verbinden. "The Holographic Principle" auf eine Art zu beschreiben ist, dass jeder den "Matrix"-Film gesehen hat, da gibt es ein Programm, um in die Matrix zu kommen, eine 3D-Welt, wo sich die Dinge im Grunde ändern und man sieht eine andere Realität. Ein weiterer Weg, das zu erklären ist, heutzutage setzen wir diese Virtuelle-Realitäts-Masken auf, und wir nutzen diese Masken, um uns in einer anderen Welt zu wiederzufinden. Sagen wir, in naher Zukunft wird die Technik so gut, setzten sich alle die Masken auf, um im Grunde genau die gleiche Welt zu sehen. Und vielleicht erkennen sie nicht mehr den Unterschied zwischen der realen Welt und der virtuellen Welt, denn alles ist so real. Es ist Teil einer neuen Wissenschaft, und es gibt so viel Zeug, das Sinn macht, und bringt dich dazu damit zu beginnen, alles auf diese Weise zu betrachten. Alles, was du siehst, ist eine Art 3D-Projektion von einer 2D-Information. Sachen, die keinen Sinn machen, aber du versuchst, es als eine Information zu erklären. Das ist eine Art neue Theorie. Manchmal wachst du aus einem Traum auf, und der Traum war so real, dass du nicht begreifen kannst, dass es nur ein Traum war. Im Grunde ist das Album über dieses Prinzip, aber alles ist gefährlich real und könnte eine Illusion sein, die dich beschützen soll. Es ist eine verrückte Idee, Roboter zu haben die entscheiden, wer erschossen wird oder nicht, sie kämpfen für sich selbst und mit der neuen Technologie. Die Frage ist, ob es gut ist, viele Leute zu finden, die mit dieser Technologie gegeneinander kämpfen. Vielleicht handeln wir das alles in zehn Jahren als Blödsinn ab - wir werden sehen!




Habt ihr die neuen Tracks mit einem Orchester aufgenommen?


Ja! Wir haben tatsächlich ein paar Jungs, aber die sind kein wirklich existierendes Orchester, nicht wie das Amsterdam Metropol Orchestra. Wir haben verschiedene großartige klassische Musiker, und jedes Mal wenn wir eine Platte machen, haben wir die gleichen Leute.


Magst du Opern?


Klar, aber das ist es nicht das, was ich die ganze Zeit höre. Ich erinnere mich an meinen Großvater der ein Hörgerät hatte als ich acht Jahre alt war, und sah sich "Madame Butterfly" an, und es war so laut, aber er genoss die Musik! Es ist interessant, wenn wir touren sind wir viel von dieser Musik umgeben. Das bekomme ich nicht so oft. Ich mag nicht alles, aber es ist definitiv gut. Ich mag klassische Musik und meine Mutter war eine klassische Klavierspielerin, so hörte ich bei ihr eine Menge klassisches Klavier und Violine, und sie hatte eine Menge von diesem Zeug auf ihrem Player. Ich mag diese Art von Musik und auch Film-Partituren. Und wir versuchen diese Musik mit Metal zu mischen - und es funktioniert!


Wie lange habt ihr am Album gearbeitet?


Es war so, dass wir uns letztes Jahr um den Mai, Juni herum mit unserem Produzenten trafen, Ende Juli haben wir begonnen, die Songs zu schreiben. Wir haben fünf Songwriter in der Band. So gingen wir einzeln zu unserem Produzenten und im August letzten Jahres haben wir alles auf den Tisch gelegt. Von September bis Oktober begannen wir zu proben und im November hatten wir Pre-Produktion, und wir gingen ins Studio und beendeten das im Mai 2016. Die gesamte Studio-Periode war 5-6 Monate, und das Schreiben auch noch 6 Monate, also war es definitiv ein Jahr das wir für das neue Album benötigten.


Wer schreibt die Musik und wer schreibt die Texte?


Mit den Texten ist es ein 50:50 Split zwischen Mark Jansen und Simone Simons. Mark beschäftigte sich mit den grundlegenden Tatsachen über dieses holographische Prinzip und er war in der Kontakt mit der ganzen Szene und er las viel darüber. Simone schreibt mehr persönliche Dinge, die persönlichen Gefühle über Alpträume, Träume und das Aufwachen danach, einige seltsame Dinge, die in Ihrem Kopf passieren können. Bei “Dancing In A Hurricane” geht es um Kinder, die in einer ruhigen Umgebung aufgewachsen sind, aber in diesem Moment verlieren sie ihre Eltern, ihre Familie, und sie sind auf einen Schlag alleine in dieser Welt, und mit diesem Wissen, dass die Kinder vollkommen verloren sind, kann man Lied viel intensiver hören. Also ist Simone persönlicher, und Mark arbeitet auch sehr viel mit den anderen Arrangements.


Ihr geht auf eine große Tour durch Europa und ihr kommt auch nach Wien! Kennst du Österreich ein wenig?


Ein bisschen, ja! Ich habe nie Skifahren gemocht - ich bin Gitarrist und habe Angst mir etwas zu brechen. Deshalb kenne ich Österreich nur vom dort spielen, nicht wirklich von einem Urlaub.


Ihr geht auch auf eine Tour durch Amerika und Kanada! Ist es so schwierig, so lange von zu Hause weg zu sein?


Es ist einer der Nachteile, aber es ist immer cool, auf Tour zu gehen und es ist immer wieder cool, zurück zu kommen. Wohin auch immer wir gehen - wenn es Nordamerika oder Südamerika ist, in der ersten Woche ist es immer ein bisschen komisch, weil ich erst wieder in das Tour-Leben hineinfinden muss, und plötzlich befindet man sich in einem Tour-Modus, und die ersten paar Tage muss man erst einen Weg dafür finden, und die letzten Tage sind meist auch eine Plage - man ist müde, und meistens auch sehr erschöpft, so dass ich die Mitte der Tour am meisten genieße. Aber ich liebe es, auf der ganzen Welt zu spielen, also ist es cool. Und Nordamerika und Kanada sind so groß, und es gibt so viele Orte um zu spielen, und wir können für viel mehr Menschen spielen als in Europa. Alles ist ein bisschen anders, aber es ist cool, dort zu spielen.




Gibt es einen besonderen Ort, wo ihr gerne ein Konzert spielen möchtet?


Nun, Japan war schon immer der Wunschliste der letzten Jahre aber es ist nie wirklich passiert. Es gab einige Möglichkeiten, dort zu spielen, aber es hat nicht geklappt oder es war nicht der richtige Zeitpunkt. Es ist ein Ort, wohin wir auf jeden Fall noch spielen wollen, weil wir großartige Geschichten darüber gehört haben. Wir hatten Welt-Touren, aber das war immer in Nord- oder Südamerika und Australien und Asien. Tatsächlich spielten wir auch in Südafrika, was großartig war. Es ist immer toll, neue Länder in die Liste aufzunehmen. In Neuseeland spielten wir letztes Jahr, und ich möchte definitiv wieder dort hin reisen mit ein bisschen mehr Zeit. Wir flogen hin, am nächsten Tag spielten wir unsere Show und einen Tag nach flogen wir weg, und das war Shit.


Welches war das beste Konzert für dich?


Ich würde sagen, das erste Mal beim Graspop Metal Meeting zu spielen. Ich bin aus Belgien und ich war 15 Jahre alt, als ich das erste Mal dort war, und alle Bands waren so großartig. Und dann spielte ich dort viele Jahre später in einer Band. Und so war für mich das erste Mal, als ich auf diesem Festival spielte, wirklich gewaltig.


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Wir haben ein neues Album und freuen uns sehr darüber. Und dann gehen wir direkt auf Tour zu Festivals in Holland und Brasilien, so dass wir sehr intensiv die neuen Songs üben müssen - das ist die nächste Zukunft. Und dann haben wir die amerikanische Tour, darauffolgend die Europatournee. Danach gehen wir wahrscheinlich nach Asien oder Australien oder Südamerika. Wir haben mehrere Festivals, und am Ende des nächsten Jahres wieder Südamerika. So sieht die Zukunft so aus: Zwei Jahre Tournee und dann ein neues Album.


Und abschließend einige letzte Worte an eure Fans?


Zuerst möchte ich allen unseren Fans für die Unterstützung im Laufe der Jahre danken. Jedes Mal, wenn wir zurückkommen, sieht man bekannte Gesichter , und neue ergänzen sie, und es ist toll das zu sehen. Es ist immer eine schöne Sache in Österreich, deshalb danke ich euch dafür, und ich hoffe, dass einige von euch auch die Texte in unseren Songs gelesen haben, und wir haben einen neuen Video-Clip online, also check out! Hello! How are you and where are you at the moment?


I´m in Belgium. I´m the only one from Belgium in the band.


Do you have a very stressful time at the moment?


It´s a little stressful, because my girlfriend and I are building a house. It´s very hard for my hands, it´s unusual work, but in a couple of weeks we will go on tour, so I have to take care of my hand. It´s a race against the clock, but I think in a couple of month all will be ready – the end is near!


You came to EPICA seven years ago. How much changed your life since then?


It changed quite a lot! Before EPICA I have played with GOD DETHRONED, which is a melodic death metal band, so the genre is very different. We played smaller shows and were not touring in a level like EPICA have. It´s kind of a big set-up, and in the seven years it grows bigger and bigger, and it seems like the summit of our career. I´m just happy still to be part of this, and we are really proud of the new album, and I think, it´s definitely the best thing we could have done, at this moment of time.


Is there big friendship between the bandmembers?


It´s difficult to be really friends, because we are not that kind of band living on the same town, meeting in a pub and say “Hey, let´s start with a band!”. EPICA is based on four different countries – I live in Belgium, Simone Simons is living in Germany, Mark Jansen lives in Italy and the rest is living in Holland. So we are in a band, stick together and it´s really great to get along with every one of them. But I would not tell them my friends, like others I know since I was 12 or 16. It´s not my life-long buddies – I have some, and I´m really happy about that.


You will release a new album named "The Holographic Principle". What is the basic idea behind the album title and the lyrics?


It´s not a concept-album, where the lyrics connect in a certain way. "The Holographic Principle" to describe in a way is, that everyone have seen the “Matrix”- movie, there is a program to go into the matrix, a 3D-world where things basically change and you see that reality. Another way to explain is, these days we have this virtual-reality masks on, and we put the masks on, to find yourself in a different world. Let´s say, in the near future technology gets so good, they put the masks on to see basically exactly the same world. And maybe they don´t realise the difference between the real world and the virtual world, because everything is so actual. It´s part of a new science, and there is so much stuff that makes sense, and makes you starting looking at that in that way. Everything you see is a sort of 3D-projection of a 2D-information. Stuff that is not making sense, but they try to explain it as an info. It´s kind of a new theory. Sometimes you wake up from a dream, and the dream is so real, that you can´t realize, that it´s only a dream. Basically the album is about this principle, but everything is dangerous real and might be an illusion which would protect yourself. It´s a crazy idea to have robots to decide who have to been shoot or not, they fight for themselves and with the new technology. The question is, is it good to find lots of people to fight against each other with this technology. Maybe in ten years we treat all as bullshit – we will see!


Did you record the new tracks with an orchestra?


Yes! We actually have a couple of guys, but they are not a really existing orchestra, not like the Amsterdam Metropol Orchestra. We have different great classical musicians, and every time when we make a record we have the same guys.


Do you like operas?


Sure, but it´s not that what I listen the whole time. I remember my grand-dad, when I was eight, he had a hearing-aid and was watching “Madame Butterfly” and it was so loud, and he was enjoying the music! It´s interesting when we are touring and there is lot of this music around. I don´t get stuff like that very often. I don´t like everything but it´s definitely good. I like classical music and my mom was a classical piano-player, so I listened to a lot of classical piano and violin, and she had a lot of this stuff on the player. I like this stuff of music and also film-scores. And we try to mix this with metal – and it works!


How long did you work at the album?


Let´s say that last year around May, June we met with our producer, at the end of July we started to write the songs. We have five songwriters in the band. So we individually went to our producer and in August last year we put all on the table. From September, October on we started to rehearsal and in November we had pre-production and we went to the studio and finished in May 2016. The whole studio period was 5-6 months, and the writing also 6 months, so definitely a year we needed for the new album.


Who is writing the music and who is writing the lyrics?


With the lyrics it is 50:50 split between Mark Jansen and Simone Simons. Mark was for the basic facts about this Holographic Principle and he was in treat with the whole scene and he was reading a lot about this. Simone writes more personal stuff, the personal feelings about nightmares, dreams and wake up, some weird stuff which can happen in your head. And “Dancing In A Hurricane” is about children who grew up in a silent environment, but in that moment they lose their parents, their family, and they are all alone in the world right now, and with that knowledge, that the children are totally lost, you can listen to the song with more intense. So Simone is more personal, and Mark is also working a lot with the other arrangements.


You will go on a big tour through Europe! You will also come to Vienna! Do you know Austria a little bit?


A little bit, yes! I never liked skiing – I´m a guitar-player and I´m afraid to damage something. So I actually know Austria only from playing there, not really for holidays.


You will also go on a tour through America and Canada! Is it difficult to be so far away from home for such a long time?


It´s one of the down sides, but it´s always cool to go there and it´s always cool to come back. Wherever we go on tour – if it´s North-America or South-America, in the first week it is always kind of tricky funny, because I have to get into the tour-life again and suddenly you find yourself in a tour-mode, and the first couple of days you have to find your way, and the last days are mostly also a pain – you are tired, and probably you are very exhausted, so I mostly enjoy the middle of the tour most. But I love playing all over the world so it´s cool. And North-America and Canada are so big, and there are so many places to play, and we can play for much more people every time than in Europe. All is a little bit different, but it´s cool to play there.


Is there a special place where you want to play a concert?


Well, Japan has been on the wish-list last years and it never really happened. There were some opportunities to play there, and it haven´t or it was not the right time. It´s a place where we definitely want to go, because we heard great stories about it. We had World-tours, but these were always North- or South-America and Australia and Asia. Actually we played in South-Africa which was great. It´s always great to add new countries to the list. In New Zealand we played last year and I definitely want to go there again with a little more time. We flew in, next day we played our show and one day after flew out, and this was shit.


Which one was the best concert ever for you?


I would say, the first time playing at Graspop Metal Meeting. I have been from Belgium and I was 15 years old when I was there first, seeing all the bands was great. And then at that time, many years later I was playing in a band. So the first time I was playing at this festival was really huge.


What are your plans for the future?


We have a new album, and that we are very looking forward to. And then we go straight on tour to festivals in Holland an Brazil, so we have to practice very lot the new songs – so that´s the near future. And then we have the American tour, then the European tour. After that we will probably go to Asia or Australia or South-America. We will have several festivals, and at the end of the year again South-America. So the future looks like this: Two years of touring and then we start a new album.


And finally some last words to your fans?


First of all I want to thank all our Fans for the support over the years. Every time when we come back, summary of faces come back, and new faces join them, so it´s great to see that. We still matter in Austria, so thanks for that, and I hope that some of you probably have seen the lyrics in our songs, and we have a new video-clip online, so check out. I hope to see a lot of you at the show in Vienna, we are doing early next year! And we are making some festivals next year, who knows?
