Richard Christy hat schon eine bewegende Karriere hinter sich und kann auf einige Jahre mit Legenden wie DEATH und ICED EARTH zurückblicken. Aktuell arbeitet der Mann zwar bei der Howard Stern Radio-Sendung, ist jedoch auch der Metal-Szene mehr als treu geblieben. Gemeinsam mit Tim Ripper Owens betreibt er nun schon einige Zeit CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED und brachte mit etwas Verspätung nun das dritte Werk auf den Markt. Was der umtriebige Schlagzeuger und Bandboss noch so treibt, erzählte er uns im Interview.


Hey Richard, wie fühlt es sich nun an nach über fünf Jahren endlich ein neues Album draussen zu haben?


Es fühlt sich großartig an und es ist so eine Erleichterung, dass die Leute endlich das Album zu hören bekommen! Das Feedback und die Reviews sind super, was zeigt, dass es es wirklich wert war all die Zeit in das Album zu investieren. Ich höre diese Songs jetzt schon seit Jahren, also seitdem ich sie geschrieben habe, und dass jetzt auch die Fans des hören, fühlt sich so großartig an. Es hat sich auch wirklich gut gemacht und ist in der ersten Woche in die Charts eingestiegen, also hoffe ich dass die Leute ihren Freunden darüber berichten, damit wir weitere Alben machen können.




Warum hat es so lange gedauert das Album fertig zu stellen?


Ich wollte mir generell etwas mehr Zeit für das Album nehmen als für die beiden vorherigen. Das zweite Album kam ungefähr eineinhalb Jahre nach dem ersten heraus und ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob die Leute das sofort realisierten, dass bereits ein zweites Album da ist. Bei dem Album wirken die Fans extrem aufgeregt und ich denke die Phrase "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" kann auch für Musik angewandt werden. Wenn du dir heutzutage mehr Zeit lässt um ein neues Album zu veröffentlichen, scheinen die Leute mehr deswegen aufgeregt zu sein wenn sie endlich ein neues Album bekommen.


Alle MItglieder von CWOTD sind berühmt und dementsprechend sehr beschäftigt. Ich nehmen es war auch nicht leicht alle bald zusammen zu bekommen, dachtest du deshalb jemals daran ein andere LineUp dafür zu verwenden?


Nein, ich möchte unser LineUp für all unsere Alben zusammen zu halten. Ich habe gehört, dass viele sich freuten, dass wir alle Alben mit den gleichen Leuten aufgenommen haben, denn heutzutage ändern Bands ihre Mitglieder ständig. Ich liebe es aber, dass wir es schaffen unser LineUp zusammen zu behalten. Tim, Steve, Jaons und ich sind wirklich gute Freunde und die Chemie ist großartig und wird auch von Album zu Album besser. Es kann schon mal länger dauern bis alle Zeit haben, wie auch bei diesem Album, aber das Warten hat sich gelohnt!


Wie beschäftigt bist du denn aktuell neben CHARRED WALLS?


Ich bin sehr beschäftigt mit meiner regulären Arbeit bei der Howard Stern Show auf Sirius-XM Satellite Radio. Ich habe auch einen animierten Cartoon mit dem Titel „Majestic Loincloth“ mit Jason Suecof vor ein paar Jahren geschrieben. Wir haben da mit dem Animations Studio Titmouse Studios zusammengearbeitet und es ist großartig geworden. Es ist eine Comedy Heavy Metal Viking Rock Oper und du kannst sie auf Youtube ansehen - www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oz2N619cwMI . Ich habe auch seit Jahren Musik für ein Event in New York namens „The Great Jack O´Lantern Blaze“ geschrieben. Es ist ein Halloween Event bei dem man durch über 7.000 geschnitzten Kürbisköpfen läuft. Ich habe dazu Synthie-Musik für verschiedene Szenen geschrieben. Auf iTunes kann man unter dem Titel „Blaze The Soundtrack“ die Tracks finden.


Was kannst du mir zum Titel und Artwork erzählen?


Mir kam die Idee zum Titel erst nachdem ich mir das Artwork ausgewählt habe. Ich bin ein großer Fan des Halloween Artist Pumpkinrot (www.pumpkinrot.com) und ich entschied, ihm ein kurzes Mail zu schreiben, ob ich eines seiner Arbeiten für CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED verwenden darf. Und er war sehr nett und meinte, ich solle mir einfach ein Foto auf seiner Homepage aussuchen. Ich finde es sieht großartig aus. Ich habe ungefähr ein Monat immer wieder auf das Bild gestarrt bist mir der Titel "Creatures Watching Over The Dead" einfiel.


“Creatures“ klingt viel direkter und eingängiger als seine Vorgänger, wie kam es zu dieser Entscheidung?


Ich denke, das ist ganz natürlich passiert, denn die Art von Musik höre ich selbst aktuell. Meine Frau und ich haben uns vor ungefähr vier Jahren einen CD-Player gekauft über den ich nun viele 80s Klassiker wie QUIET RIOTs „Metal Health“ oder TWISTED SISTER „Stay Hungry“ hörte, das hat mich wahrscheinlich beeinflusst. Ich habe schon immer eingängige, einfache und heavy Songs geliebt und ich denke genau das haben wir auf dem Album erreicht.




Du hast immer recht lange Albumtitel. Ist das Absicht oder Zufall?


Das war Absicht, denn ich fand es anfangs cool alle Albumtitel mit den Buchstaben C.W.O.T.D. zu beginnen. Die Idee ist super, auch wenn es immer schwerer wird mit coolen Albumtiteln daher zu kommen. Es hat mich gut ein Monat gekostet um auf den Titel zu kommen, aber ich finde den auf jeden Fall sehr cool.


Gibt es eine Art Thema oder Konzept hinter dem Album?


Alle Texte sind aus meiner persönlichen Perspektive und handeln von Dingen, die ich in meinem Leben durchgemacht habe und mein aktuelles Leben in New York City. Es gibt kein Konzept hinter dem Album, aber ich versuche immer positive Texte zu schreiben, da ich selbst ein sehr positiver Typ bin und ich möchte, dass Leute Spaß haben, wenn sie meine Musik hören. Ich möchte, dass Leute mit dem Album aus der harten Realität entfliehen können. Das ist es, was Heavy Metal für mich bedeutet, wenn ich Musik höre, entfliehe ich selbst der Realität und bin in einer Welt in der nur der Metal alles bedeutet und das macht mich glücklich! Ich möchte einfach, dass Leute headbangen und Spaß haben wenn sie dieses Album hören.


Wie bist du eigentlich auf den Bandnamen gekommen?


Bei der Howard Stern Show, die ja eine Comedy Show ist, werden auch Telefonscherze gemacht. Wir haben einen Prank bei einer christlichen Radio-Show gemacht und die wurden richtig sauer auf mich und meinen Kollegen. Der Host der Show meinte, dass wenn wir nicht aufhören mit den Anrufen, werden wir zur Hölle fahren und an der „Charred Walls of the Damned/verkohlten Wand der Verdammten“ kratzen. Wir sahen uns nur an und meinte: das wäre ein großartiger Bandname!




Wie schreibst du normalerweise die Songs und inwieweit können sich die anderen Mitglieder einbringen?


Ich schreibe ziemlich alles und spiele auch alle Instrumente auf den frühen Demos ein. Dann schicke ich die Songs zu Jason Suecof und der wählt dann die besten Songs fürs Album aus. Für dieses Album habe ich 22 Songs geschrieben, wovon Jason neun auswählte. Dann habe ich mich mit ihm in seinem Audiohammer Studio in Florida getroffen, wo wir die Songs zum finalen Stadium bearbeiteten. Er ist ein großartiger Produzent und Songschreiber und er würde Tempi oder Arrangements ändern, wenn er der Meinung ist, dass es nötig ist. Tim und Steve sage ich dann sie sollen ihre eigenen Sounds einbringen und sich nicht stur auf meine Demos beschränken. Ich gebe jedem die komplette kreative Freiheit im Studio um das Beste herauszuholen.


Gibt es denn Pläne um das neue Album auf die Bühne zu bringen?


Ja, hoffentlich!!! Mein Traum ist es, mit CWOTD in Übersee zu spielen mit dem Album. Es ist schwer alle Leute dazu zu bringen, aber ich hoffe, dass wir zumindest ein paar Festivals für das Album spielen können. Ich denke das Album klingt live großartig und ich kann es kaum erwarten, den Metal all den Fans draussen auf Tour näher zu bringen!


Du bist auch bei MONTE PITTMAN für sein großartiges neues Album eingestiegen. Wie war es mit ihm zu arbeiten und wie denkst du über das Ergebnis des Albums?


Es war unglaublich mit Monte zu arbeiten. Er ist ein so talentierter Gitarrist und Songschreiber und es ist eine Ehre Teil seines Albums zu sein. Noch dazu war ich extrem aufgeregt als er mir erzählte, dass auch Billy Sheehan auf dem Album zu hören sein wird. Ich bin ein Fan von Billy seit ich elf Jahre alt war. Ich finde, dass das Album großartig geworden ist und ich bin stolz dabei gewesen zu sein. Alle bei Metal Blade Records sind wie eine Familie, so sagte ich sofort, als Monte und Brian Slagel mich fragten, dass ich dabei bin.


Mit DEATH und ICED EARTH hast du bei zwei legendären aber doch sehr unterschiedlichen Bands gespielt, wie siehst du nun auf dieses Zeit zurück?


Ich fühle mich so geehrt, dass ich Teil der Metal-History bin mit DEATH und ICED EARTH. Der Grund, warum mich jeder kennt, ist weil Chuck Schuldiner mich damals fragte, ob ich bei DEATH mitspielen will. DEATH ist meine Lieblingsband und ich bin so glücklich in dieser Band Drums gespielt zu haben. Ich war auch großer ICED EARTH Fan und bin auch stolz auf „Horror Show“ und „The Glorious Burden“. Außerdem habe ich da die Chance gehabt Tim „Ripper“ Owens kennen zu lernen, also bin ich sehr dankbar für diese Chance. Ich denke meine beste Drum-Performance war auf DEATHs „The Sound Of Perseverance“ und ich bin so dankbar, dass ich auf dem Album spielen konnte und auch, dass ich Chuck Schuldiner kannte und natürlich mit ihm in einer Band zu spielen. Er ist ein musikalisches Genie und seine Musik wird ewig weiter leben.



Und was denkst du über das DEATH DTA Tour-Projekt?


Ich liebe es! Ich konnte auf ihrer ersten Amerika-Tour zwei Songs mit ihnen spielen - "Spirit Crusher" und "Scavenger Of Human Sorrow" von "The Sound Of Perseverance". Es war enorm und Alex Skolnick hat bei den beiden Songs auch Gitarre gespielt, das war großartig. Es ist toll, das junge Leute immer noch die Musik von Chuck live mit Mitgliedern, die mal bei DEATH waren, erleben können. Ich freue mich auch, dass Relapse alle Alben von DEATH neu veröffentlicht – die bringen "The Sound Of Perseverance" auch auf Vinyl raus, was großartig wird.

Hey Richard, how does it feel to have finally a new record out with CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED after more than five years?


It feels amazing and it´s such a relief that people can now finally hear the album! The feedback and reviews have been so great, which makes it well worth all of the time that it took us to make this album. I´ve been listening to these songs for many years now, since I wrote them, and for the fans to finally get to hear them is such an awesome feeling. The album did really well on the charts the first week it was out and I hope people tell of their friends about the album so we can keep making more albums!


Why did it take so long to do that record?


I wanted to take a bit more time with this album than the first two. The second album came out only about a year and a half after the first album and I´m not sure that fans even knew that we had a second album out at the time because it was released very soon after the first one. With this album people seem very excited because it´s been 5 years since the last album and I think the phrase "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" pertains to music as well. These days, if you take a while to release an album, people get excited when you finally do have a new album.


All the members of CWOTD are famous and very busy. So did you never think about changing something in the line-up to get the record ready earlier?


No, I want to keep the same lineup for all of our albums. A lot of people have said that they love that we´ve had the same lineup for every album because with bands these days changing lineups all the time, I love that we´re able to keep our lineup together for every album that we´ve done. Tim, Steve, Jason, and I are very good friends and we have such a great chemistry that gets better with each album. Sometimes it does take a little while for all of our schedules to work out so that we can record, like with this album, but it´s always worth the wait!


How busy are you at the moment with other work and projects besides CHARRED WALLS?


I´m very busy with my regular day job which is at The Howard Stern Show on Sirius-XM Satellite Radio. I also wrote an animated cartoon titled "Majestic Loincloth" with Jason Suecof a few years back. We collaborated with the animation studio Titmouse Studios and it turned out amazing. It´s a Comedy Heavy Metal Viking Rock Opera and you can check it out on Youtube if you search "Majestic Loincloth". I´ve also been writing music for the last four years for an event in New York called "The Great Jack O´Lantern Blaze". It´s a Halloween themed event where you walk through over 7,000 carved Jack O´Lanterns and I wrote synthesizer based music for all of the different scenes. What can you tell me about the title and the artwork of “Creatures Watching Over The Dead”?


I came up with the title after choosing the artwork for the album. I´m a huge fan of a Halloween themed artist named Pumpkinrot who has a website www.pumpkinrot.com and I just decided to email him one day to ask if he would ever allow me to use one of his photos for a CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED album cover. He was so nice about it and said yes so I chose the photo for the album cover from his website and I think it looks amazing! I stared at the picture for about a month while trying to think of an album titled and finally came up with "Creatures Watching Over The Dead"!


“Creatures” sounds more direct and catchy than its predecessor, how came this decision?


I think it just happened naturally because that is the kind of stuff I´m listening to at the moment. My wife and I bought a record player about four years ago and I´ve been listening to a lot of classic 80´s albums like QUIET RIOT "Metal Health" and TWISTED SISTER "Stay Hungry", so that probably influenced me a bit when I was writing the songs for our current album. I´ve always love really catchy, simple, heavy songs and I think we´ve achieved that with the songs on this album.


You have always really long record-titles, is that just a coincidence or a conscious decision?


It´s a conscious decision because I thought it would be fun to always have our album titles start with the letters C.W.O.T.D.. It´s a fun theme to have for each album, although it´s getting harder and harder to come up with cool album titles that start with those letters! It took me about a month to come up with "Creatures Watching Over The Dead", but once I decided on it I was so happy because it´s such a cool title!


Is there an overall topic or some kind of concept behind this record?


All of the lyrics are written from a personal perspective about different things I experience throughout life and currently while living in New York City. There´s not an overall topic to the album but I do try to write relatively positive lyrics because I´m a pretty positive guy and I want people to have fun while listening to this album. I want this album to be an escape from the harsh realities of real life for people. That´s what heavy metal is for me, it lets me escape real life while I´m listening and I´m transported to another world where heavy metal is everything and it makes me so happy! I just want people to bang their heads and have fun while listening to this album!


How came actually the idea of the name CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED?


Where I work at The Howard Stern Show, we´re a comedy radio show and we do prank calls. We did a prank call where we pranked a Christian radio show and they got very mad at my coworker and I. The hosts of the Christian radio show said that if we don´t stop making prank calls, we´re going to go to hell and be scratching the Charred Walls of the Damned! My coworker and I looked at each other and said, that´s an awesome band name!


How do you normally write and create the songs for CWOTD and how much can the other guys contribute?


I pretty much write all of the music and play all of the instruments on the demo recordings in the beginning stages. Then I send the songs to Jason Suecof and he picks the best songs for the album. For this album I wrote 22 songs and Jason picked the best 9. Then Jason and I met up at Audiohammer Studios, his studios, in Florida and reworked the songs to get the final versions for the album. Jason is an amazing songwriter and producer and he would change tempos or rearrange parts if he thought the songs needed it. Then in the studio I would also tell Tim and Steve to put their own sound on the songs and not be limited by what was on the demos. I give everybody total creative freedom in the studio to make the album the best that it can be.


Are there plans to bring the new record on stage?


Yes Hopefully!!!! My dream is for CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED to play overseas on tour for this album. With our schedules it´s hard to get everything to line up but we´re hoping to at least do some festivals in support of this album, I think these songs will sound amazing live and I can´t wait to bring the metal to all of the fans on tour!


You also joined MONTE PITTMAN for his really great new record. How was it to work with Monte and what do you think about how the record turned out?


It was incredible to work with Monte! He´s such a talented guitar player and songwriter and it´s an honor to be on his new album! Also, when he told me that Billy Sheehan was going to be on the album too, I was so excited! I´ve been a Billy Sheehan fan since I was 11 years old! I think the album turned out amazing and I´m so proud to be a part of it. All of the bands on Metal Blade Records are like family so when Brian Slagel and Monte asked me to play drums on Monte´s album I said Of Course I Will!


With DEATH and ICED EARTH you were part of two legendary but really different bands, how do you look back now at these times?


I´m so honored that I was part of metal history with DEATH and ICED EARTH! The reason that anybody know who I am is thanks to Chuck Schuldiner asking me to play drums for DEATH. DEATH is my favorite band and I´m so lucky that I got to play drums in my favorite band. I was a huge fan of ICED EARTH too and I´m so proud of the "Horror Show" and "Glorious Burden" albums, plus that´s how I got to meet Tim "Ripper" Owens so I´m very thankful for the opportunity! I think my best drum performance was on the DEATH album "The Sound Of Perseverance", and I´m so thankful that I had the chance to play on that album and I´m so thankful that I got to know Chuck Schuldiner and be in a band with him, he´s a musical genius and his music will live on forever.


And what do you think about the DEATH DTA Tour Project?


I love it! I got to play two songs with DTA on their first American tour, the songs "Spirit Crusher" and "Scavenger Of Human Sorrow" from "The Sound Of Perseverance"- . It was a blast, Alex Skolnick played guitar live on the two songs too which was so amazing! It´s great that younger people still get to see Chuck´s music live with the band members who were in DEATH. I also love that Relapse records is re-releasing all of the DEATH albums, they´re putting out "The Sound Of Perseverance" on vinyl soon which is going to be awesome!
