Die Amis von SALIVA sind in den Staaten schon seit Jahren eine riesen Nummer und in Europa läuft es auch von Jahr zu Jahr besser. Ein weiterer Grund dafür ist das aktuelle Album "Love, Lies & Therapy", welches kürzlich veröffentlicht wurde. Da die Jungs nun auch mit SOIL auf Tour sind, haben wir uns mal Fronter Bobby Amaru zum Interview geschnappt.


Hi Bobby, wie läufts und was tut sich aktuell bei SALIVA?


Aktuell ist SALIVA mit einem Haufen cooler Bands in den USA auf Tour. Ich meine TRAPT, ALIEN ANT FARM, SAVING ABEL, TANTRIC, 12 STONES, CRAZY TOWN. Und es läuft großartig. Die Shows waren bisher alle genial. Die Bands werden super unterstützt, es kommen ein Haufen Fans...es macht einfach Spaß.




Euer neuestes Album „Love, Lies & Therapy“ wurde kürzlich veröffentlicht, wie geht es dir jetzt mit dem Material?


Wir haben defnitiv sehr viel in diese Platte reingesteckt... also um sie zu machen. Ich bin glücklich mit dem Album, ich denke es ist großartig. Es wurde gut angenommen und die Reaktionen sind wirklich, wirklich gut. Ich könnte mir nicht mehr wünschen. Ich meine, wenn du eine Platte rausbringst, möchtest du dass die Leute diese respektieren, oder zumindest etwas damit anfangen können. Das ist alles worum es uns geht.


Ich mag den Titel, was ist die Idee dahinter?


“ Love, Lies & Therapy” ist eigentlich ein Song, den ich schon vor Jahren hatte, also schon bevor ich bei SALIVA war. Ich würde sagen der ist so ungefähr neun oder zehn Jahre alt. Es ist etwas das mich irgendwie immer beschäftigt hat. Als das Album dann fertig war, habe ich mich durch die Songs und Texte gearbeitet und darüber nachgedacht. Da kam ich darauf zurück. Wir gaben dem Label dann ein paar Titelvorschläge und das war der Einzige der ihnen zusagte. So ist das also passiert.


Was sind denn sonst so deine Einflüsse für die Texte?


Du solltest wissen, wir habend das Album auf eine Art aufgenommen... wir sind nämlich ins Studio ohne Songs gegangen, bzw. hatten wir nur ein paar Ideen mit. Also haben wir von Grund auf begonnen. Einige der Titel könnten von vergangenen oder aktuellen Beziehungen beeinflusst wurden sein. Es geht um viele verschiedene Dinge, aber es ist von den Texten her jetzt nichts Bahnbrechendes oder so etwas, aber es passt zum Album, es passt zum Grundton, den wir erreich wollten. Ich meine, wir wollten Texte, mit denen sich die Leute identifizieren können.


Ihr hattet wieder mal einen Wechsel im LineUp bevor das Album veröffentlicht wurde. Was kannst du mir über den Abgang von Dave Novotny erzählen und was kannst du über den Neuzugang Brad Stewart sagen?


Das mit Daves Abgang war eines dieser Dinge... Ich bin nicht ganz sicher, aber ich glaub er war ziemlich gestresst von privaten Dingen. Ich denke die Band hat in sozusagen ausgebrannt. Wayne und Paul haben das so lange gemacht, wie möglich, doch sie sagten auch, dass sie nicht bremsen wollten, denn das ist ihr Job, ihr Leben. Es ist das einzige, was sie jemals kannten. Und ich glaube es war für ihn keine so große Sache mehr...

Und Brad sprang schon vor einiger Zeit für Dave ein, als er ein Kind bekommen hat. Ich kenne ihn schon seit Jahren, er ist ein bodenständige Typ und ein echt netter Kerl. Ich denke er passt perfekt zu uns und killt an seinem Instrument. Er ist großartig.


Wie würdest du das Album im Gegensatz zu euren letzten Werken beschreiben?


Ich kann das nur schwer beantworten, da ich erst fünf Jahre in der Band bin und ich zuvor nur ein Album mit SALIVA aufgenommen habe. Aber der Schreibprozess war definitiv anders. Wir haben das Album on the fly im Studio geschrieben, dazwischen getourt, waren zurück im Studio, tourten wieder und beendeten dann die Aufnahmen. Für „Rise Up“ hatten wir schon einige Songs ziemlich fertig und schrieben noch ein paar mehr. Wir konnten dann von 25-30 Songs wählen. Also die besten 15. Da waren wir in Nashville und hatten keine Konzerte anstehen. Wir konnten uns zwei Monate komplett darauf konzentrieren, das war eigentlich der größte Unterschied.


Was können wir eigentlich am Artwork erkennen?


Tja, am Artwork waren anfangs einige verschiedene Dinge zusammengeworfen worden. Ich mag dieses ganze „Schwarze Loch“ Zeug. Ich weiß nicht genau was es war, aber da gab es diese Idee mit dem Schwarzen Loch und einer Art Schlange. Ich sagte dem Künstler dann, er solle die Schlange rausnehmen und das Ganze etwas mehr hervorheben bzw. mehr Farben reinnehmen. Es sollte mehr herausstechen. Er hat dann noch ein paar andere Sachen zusammengestellt, wir sind dann dabei geblieben.




Ihr habt ein wirklich großartiges Cover mit „They Don´t Care About Us“ aufgenommen, vor allem deine Vocals sind super geworden. Wie seit ihr auf die Idee gekommen?


Ich weiß den Kommentar zu den Vocals zu schätzen. Grundsätzlich ist das ein Song den ich schon seit langem machen wollte. Das ist einer dieser MJ Songs, die die Leute gerne vergessen, auch wenn es damals ein großer Hit war. Da gibt es ja noch „Thriller“, „Beat It“, „Billy Jean“ und all das Zeug, aber dieser Song hat etwas zu sagen und ich denke auch, dass man sich auch in der heutigen Zeit sehr gut identifizieren kann. Es ist lustig, der Song war nämlich genau vor 20 Jahren in den Charts. Jetzt 20 Jahre später veröffentlichen wir den Song und hatten daran eigentlich gar nicht gedacht. Wir haben ihn einfach gemacht und aufs Album geschmissen. Es hat einfach eine Menge Spaß gemacht, darum ist es eine Art Favorit von mir und auch von vielen anderen Leuten.


Gibt es Tracks zu denen du uns mehr erzähle möchtest? Meine Lieblinge sind zur Zeit „Bitch Like You“, „Tragic Kind Of Love“ und „Broken Wings“, aber du kannst natürlich selbst wählen, wenn es zu anderen Tracks interessante Storys gibt.


Bei „Bitch Like You“ geht es um Leute, die alles für gegeben halten und meinen, sie können mit allem ganz einfach davon kommen. Die nehmen auch keine Rücksicht auf andere. Es kann sich auf verschiedene Dinge beziehen, also verschiedene Arten der Beziehung. Ich habe den Song eigentlich wegen jemanden aus einer bestimmten Band geschrieben. Ich werde nicht sagen um wen es geht, aber wir sollten damals eine Show in Mexiko spielen. Er entschied einfach da nicht hinzugehen. Also hat er uns alle davon abgehalten...

„Tragic Kind Of Love“ ist ein Beziehungssong. Definitiv eine Art von „kann nicht mit, aber auch nicht ohne leben“-Situation. Jeder hat so etwas schon mal durchgemacht. Es geht auch um Untreue und wie man darüber hinwegkommt. Grundsätzlich: wie weit würdest du gehen. Ich meine: „Ich würde alles für dich tun, was würdest du für mich tun, bin ich es wirklich wert?“

Zu „Broken Wings“ hatte Paul die Idee und wir haben dann gemeinsam den Vers geschrieben. Es ist eigentlich mein Lieblingssong was den Text betrifft. Wir haben gemeinsam auch am Chorus gearbeitet, aber der Vers macht den Song lebendig.


Wie sieht es denn mit Tourplänen aus?


Wir werden ab Oktober mit SOIL durch Europa reisen. Da gibt es einige Dates in Deutschland, England und andere Spots. Ihr findet diese auf www.saliva.com.


Wenn du wählen könntest, mit welcher Band würdest du gerne live einen Song performen?


Hm... Ich würde sagen es wäre großartig mit PHIL COLLINS zu spielen. Ich würde aber auch gerne für SABBATH oder ZEPPELIN Drums spielen. Und der Grund dafür ist einfach, denn wer kann scho behaupten das getan zu haben? (lacht)

Außerdem würde ich gerne für FAITH NO MORE singen, das wäre ein Spaß. Es gibt aber so viele Bands von denen ich Fan bin und ich liebe es einfach auf der Bühne zu stehen.

Hey guys, how are you doing an what´s going on in SALIVA at the moment?


Well, currently SALIVA is in USA on tour with a bunch of cool bands from around here. I mean TRAPT, ALIEN ANT FARM, SAVING ABEL, TANTRIC, 12 STONES, CRAZY TOWN. And it´s going great. All the shows have been amazing so far. The bands have been supported, fans are showing up... it´s been fun.


Your newest record “Love Lies & Therapy” has been release a few months ago, how do you feel now with it?


We definitely put a lot into this record... in making it. I´m happy with the record, I think it´s great. It has been well accepted and the responses were really, really good. What more can you really ask for? I mean, you put a record out, you want your fans and people to respect it and at least be able to relate to it. That´s is what it´s all about for us.


I really like the title, what was the idea of it?


”Love, Lies & Therapy” is actually a song that I had many years ago, before I was in SALIVA. I´d say about 9 or 10 years. And it´s one of the things it´s always kind of stuck with me. And when the record was done, I was kind of going through the lyrics and listening to the songs and was trying to think about the title. I was kind of going back to that. We submitted a few titles to the label and that´s the one they agreed on. So that´s how that worked.


What are your influences for the lyrics on this record?


You know, the way we recorded this record was... we went in the studio with really no songs... or maybe with a few ideas. So we started from the scratch. So some of the lyrics could have been influences by past relationships or current relationships. It is a lot of different stuff, but I don´t think it´s lyrically ground-breaking or something, but it fits the record, it fits the tone we were trying to archive. I mean, writing lyrics that people can relate to.


Another line-up change happened before the release of the record. What can you tell me about the departure of Dave Novotny and can you write me some information of Brad Stewart?


Dave´s departing was one of those things...I´m not sure, but it seems he was really stressed out dealing with personal stuff. I think this band was becoming a big backburner for him. And then Wayne and Paul have been doing it as just as long it was possible. They said: “Well, we don´t wanna slow down, this is our job, this is our living.” It´s the only thing that they have ever known. I think it wasn´t anymore a big deal to him, so...

And Brad jumped in for Dave a few years ago when he had a kid. I know him for years, he´s a down to earth super nice guy. Not a mean bone in his body. I think he just fits and he kills it, he´s aweseome. I don´t know anyone who could do his job better for the band.


How would you describe the record in comparison to your former releases?


I can´t really answer this question, because I´m only five years in the band now and I have done only one record before with SALIVA. But the writing process was definitely different once again. This record we wrote in the studio on the fly, we toured, came back wrote more, toured again, came back – finished it. For the “Rise Up” record we had a bunch of songs that we very sketched out and then we wrote a bunch more. And we picked from about 25-30 songs. The best 15. We were in Nashville and there was no touring at this moment. We concentrated for about to month on it, that´s the difference.


What can we actually see on the artwork?


Well, the artwork was a few different things kind of mashed together. I kind of like the whole “black hole” thing. I don´t know what it exactly is, but there was this idea of this black hole and this kind of snake-thing. And I just told the artist, take this snake out and make the outlining of the whole thing more coloured. It should just pop out a little more. He kind of took a few other things together, but we settled on that.


You did a really great Cover song with “They Don´t Care About Us”, especially because you showed great vocals-skills on that one. How came the idea to do this?


I appreciate the comment on the vocals. Basically this is a song that I wanted to do for a long time. Always one of these MJ songs people maybe forgot about, even it was a hit at the time. There is “Thriller”, “Billy Jean” and all that stuff, but this song I think has a lot to say and it´s also very relatable today in the times that we are in. It´s funny because that song was on the charts, killing it, exactly 20 years ago. So 20 years later we released that song and we didn´t think about that. In the year we made the song, we just put it on the record. It was a lot of fun, so I feel like it´s a favourite for me and also for a lot of other people.


Are there some songs, you want to tell us a little bit about? My favourites at the moment are “Bitch Like You”, “Tragic Kind Of Love” and “Broken Wings”, but you can pick by yourself if you have cool stories to other songs...


”Bitch Like You” is actually about somebody that is taking things for granted, think about they can go all away with, but bringing you down as well. It could be a few different things relationships wise or... I actually wrote it about someone from a certain band. I´m not gonna mention, but we were supposed to go through a show in Mexico. He just decided he wasn´t going there. So he just prevented us from playing in Mexico..

“Tragic Kind Of Love” is a relationship-song. Definitely a “can´t live with, can´t live without” kind of situation. Everybody is kind of through that. Infidelitys as well and overcoming those. Basically: how far would you go. I mean, “I would do anything for you, what would you do for me, am I really worth it?”

For “Broken Wings” Paul actually had the idea and when we finished it and wrote the verses. It´s actually one of my favourite lyrics, especially the verses. We co-worked on the chorus, but the verse kind of brought it to life.


Can we expect you soon on the stages in Europe?


We will be in Europe in October for four weeks supporting SOIL. There is a lot of dates in Germany, England and other spots. You should be able to find those dates on www.saliva.com.


If you could choose, which band would you like to join on stage just for one gig on stage to play or sing?


Hm... I would like think it would be awesome to play with Phil Collins or something. I would like to play drums with SABBATH or ZEPPELIN. The reason why I would like to do that is, who could really say he has done that? (laughs)

And I would like to sing in FAITH NO MORE, that would be fun. But there are a lot of bands I am fan. I just love to be on stage.
