Vor der Veröffentlichung des neuen SONATA ARCTICA Albums „The Ninth Hour“ und der anstehenden Tour haben wir uns mit Sänger Tony Kakko unterhalten und einiges über die Entstehung des neuen Werkes, CO2-Fußabdrücke und die verrücktesten Fans erfahren.

Hallo Tony, wie viele Interviews hattest du heute bereits?

Nur eines, vor einer Stunde. An einem nicht so stressigen Tag habe ich nur drei Interviews und vielleicht ein Mail mit dem ich mich später noch beschäftige. Ich habe schon 80 oder 90 Interviews hinter mir, aber es wird bereits weniger.

Schreibst du eigentlich die Texte als erstes oder hast du bereits eine Melodie im Kopf, wenn du einen Song komponierst?

In 99% der Fälle kommt die Musik zuerst. Der Song ist für gewöhnlich fertig, bevor ich mit den Texten beginne. Das passiert meistens einen Monat oder ein paar Wochen bevor wir den Song aufnehmen oder ich mit dem Gesang beginne. Wenn ich mich mit dem Text auseinandersetzte und ich wirklich zu schreiben beginne, fließen die Zeilen aus mir heraus, aber die Musik ist immer zuerst da.

Wie viel Zeit brauchst du um einen Song zu schreiben oder zu komponieren?

Das ist unterschiedlich. Es kann zum Beispiel 20 Minuten dauern, wie im Fall eines Songs auf dem neuen Album, aber es kann auch mehr als zehn Jahre dauern. Wenn ich nicht wirklich zufrieden mit einem Song bin, an dem ich gerade arbeite, dann lasse ich ihn liegen und probiere es später noch einmal. Der Song muss sich erst entwickeln und seinen Platz finden. Im Endeffekt kann es sein, dass ich an einem Song mehr als zehn Jahre arbeite. Die Zeitspanne liegt also zwischen 20 Minuten und zehn oder 20 Jahren.

An welchem Song hast du beispielweise zehn Jahre gearbeitet?

Zum Beispiel „Candle Lawns“ aber dieser ist nicht ganz so alt, vielleicht fünf oder sechs Jahre, aber „Among The Shooting Stars“ ist fast zehn Jahre oder älter. Ich habe ihn oft umgeschrieben und der Song hat verschiedene Formen aber schließlich habe ich die richtige Version und den richtigen Platz gefunden und entschied mich dazu ihn auf das neue Album zu bringen.

Ab wann werden die anderen Bandmitglieder in den kreativen Prozess integriert?

Auf diesem Album war es mehr oder weniger als sie damit anfingen die Songs zu spielen und sie wurden kreativ als es mit den Solos und diesen Sachen anfing. Wir mussten uns ziemlich beeilen, da wir erst Anfang April von unserer Nordamerika-Tour mit NIGHTWISH zurückkamen. Wir sollten bereits Ende Juli mit den Aufnahmen für Nuclear Blast fertig sein. Daher hatten wir nur drei Monate um den Großteil der Songs aufzunehmen und fertig zu machen, also mussten wir uns wirklich beeilen. Das ist auch, wie es sonst meistens läuft. Bis jetzt habe ich die meisten Songs geschrieben, mehr als 100 Songs und die anderen Jungs haben bis jetzt erst zwei geschrieben.

Also ist der Einfluss der anderen nicht so groß?

Nicht während dem Schreib-Prozess, aber die andern lassen die Songs letztendlich nach SONATA ARCTICA klingen.

Wie wichtig ist es, dass man als Zuhörer den Text versteht?

Das hängt vom Zuhörer ab. Ich bin jene Art von Zuhörer, vor allem als ich noch jünger war, die nicht wirklich ihre Aufmerksamkeit auf den Text legen, ich habe vor allem die Musik selbst genossen, die Melodie und das Feeling eines Songs. Wenn du die Texte beachtest und diese auch noch eine Botschaft haben oder ein Gefühl das sie vermitteln wollen, macht das die musikalische Erfahrung reicher. Das hängt natürlich auch vom Song ab, einige sind intimer und tiefgründiger als andere.

Was magst du eigentlich mehr, den kreativen Prozess bei der Entstehung eines Albums oder die Tour?

Ich mag beides. Die beiden Sachen ergänzen sich sehr gut. Wenn du gerade sehr, sehr lange auf Tour warst, langweilen dich manchmal die Songs die du bereits hast und dann würde ich dafür sterben neues Material zu schreiben, weil ich das wirklich genieße. Es ist fantastisch, ich liebe es neue Songs zu schreiben, diese aufzunehmen, ins Studio zu gehen und all das, bis alles fertig ist. Danach ist es aber auch wieder schön auf Tour zu gehen, vor allem wenn man davor lange Zeit im Studio verbracht hat. Es ist eine Art Gesamtpacket.

Schreibst du auch Lieder während der Tour?

Ich habe es ein paar Mal probiert, aber es hat sich herausgestellt, dass es nahezu unmöglich ist. Ich kann mich nicht darauf konzentrieren. Ich brauche meine Privatsphäre und Zeit, mein Zuhause und die Sachen um mich herum wenn ich Songs schreibe. Es ist eine wirklich intime Situation für mich und ich habe einfach nicht genügend Privatsphäre während ich unterwegs bin.

In welchem Land hast du die meisten Fans?

Ah, wow, das ist unmöglich zu sagen.

Vielleicht in Finnland?

Ich weiß nicht, vielleicht war es einmal so. Ich bin nicht sicher. Auch wenn wir in Finnland mit vielen, vielen oder den meisten unserer Alben Gold gemacht haben, sind das nur Zahlen. Es gibt ja nur um die fünf Millionen Einwohner in Finnland, also ist es wirklich schwer zu sagen.

Okay, aber in welchem Land gibt es die verrücktesten Fans?

Für gewöhnlich in allen Ländern in denen die Leute ein heißes Temperament haben, wie Lateinamerika und in Europa zum Beispiel in Spanien, Italien und so weiter.

Und wie war es in Japan?

Oh Japan, dort sind die Fans war auch wild aber eher auf eine sonderbare Weise. Die Leute versuchen die ganze Zeit unter Kontrolle zu bleiben und lassen ihre Emotionen nicht die Oberhand ergreifen. Sie sind also nicht ganz so wild. Ein ziemlich witziges Beispiel war als ein Mann im Anzug kam um unsere Show zu sehen. Er stand da, zog sein Jackett aus und streifte sich ein SONATA ARCTICA T-Shirt über, bevor er sich die Show gab. Danach zog der das SONATA ARCTICA Shirt wider aus, legte es sorgfältig zusammen und packte es in seine Aktentasche. Das war ziemlich schräg mitanzusehen.

Was ist eigentlich dein Lieblings-SONATA ARCTICA-Song?

Wow, das ist wirklich schwer zu beantworten. Im Moment bin ich dem neuen Album ziemlich zugetan. Ich liebe die Songs und sie stehen mir gerade irgendwie nahe. Aber sobald wir anfangen diese live zu spielen und etwas Zeit haben, ich selbst, das Album und alles, dann sehe ich das Gesamtbild. Ich bin sicher, einige Songs werden besser ankommen und andere werden dafür etwas zeitbeständiger sein. Ich denke ich würde „Don´t Say A Word“ zu meinen Favoriten zählen. Ich bin nicht sicher, ob es der beste Song ist, aber er ermüdet mich nicht und es ist immer ein Spaß ihn zu performen.

In Bezug auf den Text oder die Musik oder beides?

Dies Musik, das Feeling! Es hängt auch vielleicht damit zusammen, dass es immer der letzte Song ist den wir spielen. Es ist so wie: „Job well done!“ und dann spielen wir den letzten Song und es ist „Don´t Say A Word“ und das gibt dem ganzen Song dieses spezielle Gefühl, denke ich.

Und was ist dein Lieblingssong auf der neuen LP?

Im Moment denke ich, es sind zwei Songs, die beiden langsameren sind sehr schön, „On The Faultline“ und „Among The Shooting Stars“ finde ich gut. Auf der härteren und lustigeren Seite mag ich „Fairytale“ der etwas schneller ist, aber es ist wirklich schwer zu sagen.

Die neue Platte handelt von der Balance zwischen unserer Gesellschaft und der Natur? Was kann jeder besser machen, um diese Gleichgewicht zu erhalten?

Nun, jeder kann etwas besser machen, man kann effizienter recyceln, versuchen nicht alles zu verschmutzen und nachhaltige Entscheidungen treffen, ein kleineres Auto zu fahren oder gar nicht Auto zu fahren wenn man es vermeiden kann. Man sollte umweltfreundliche Entscheidungen treffen, so sollten wir machen. Aber ich könnte auch eine Stunde über dieses Thema reden. Ich denke, die vielen kleinen Dingen machen den großen Unterschied.

Ich dachte du reist auch ziemlich viel, ist das nicht schlecht für deinen CO2 Fußabdruck?

Ja ist es, mit Sicherheit, aber das ist etwas das ich in Kauf nehmen muss, um zu tun was ich tue. Anstatt zu fliegen würde ich auch ein Segelboot nehmen, wenn das irgendwie möglich wäre, aber das ist es nicht.

Du hattest auch einen Gastauftritt auf dem neuen TRICK OR TREAT-Album. Was denkst du über TRICK OR TREAT und wie war es mit ihnen zu arbeiten?

Wir haben die Jungs kennen gelernt, als sie vor ein paar Jahren unsere Show eröffnet haben. Es war wirklich lustig mit ihnen zu touren und die Jungs sind großartig auf und neben der Bühne. Falls du sie noch nicht gesehen hast solltest du sie dir definitiv ansehen. So lernten wir sie besser kennen und wurden Freunde und als sie mich fragten, ob ich bei ihrem neuen Album mitmache, sagte ich na klar, sicher bin ich dabei. Es war lustig und unkompliziert mit ihnen zu arbeiten und sie sind wirklich sehr talentierte und fantastische Musiker und Alessandro ist ein großartiger Sänger. Es war echt super, ein Teil dieses Songs zu sein.

Was kannst du uns über das neue SONATA ARCTICA-Album verraten?

Wenn ihr das Vorgänger-Album „Pariahs Child“ gemocht habt, dann werdet ihr dieses sicher auch mögen. Es ist vielleicht ein bisschen anders, aber der Unterschied ist nicht so groß wie bei den letzten paar Alben seit “Unia”, “The Days of Grays”, “Stones Grow her Name” und “Pariahs Child”. Bei diesen gab es viele musikalische Unterschiede, aber die beiden neuen Alben sind vom Stil her gleich.

Viele Fans mochten die LP „The Days Of Grays“, vor allem den Orchester Teil. Planst du so etwas auch wieder in der Zukunft oder wird es die einzige Orchester Version bleiben?

Wir werden sehen was passiert. Als ich vor zwei Jahren mit der Planung des neuen Albums begann, hatte ich nicht diesen Plan. Es wäre nicht schlecht noch einmal ein Orchester Album zu machen, aber es gibt viele Gründe warum wir das nicht getan haben. Ich bin auf jeden Fall froh, dass wir es geschafft haben „White Pearl, Black Oceans Part II“ mit Orchester-Elementen zurückzubringen. Vielleicht werden wir in Zukunft wieder mehr in diese Richtung gehen, aber je mehr Orchester-Elemente wir verwenden, desto eher werden wir mit NIGHTWISH verglichen und das ist Kacke. Das ist zwar nicht zwangsläufig schlecht oder eine Last, aber es gibt bereits sehr viele Bands die heutzutage ein Orchester verwenden. Es ist wahrscheinlich nicht schlecht, dass es zumindest eine Band gibt, die nicht auf diesen Zug aufspringt.

Bist du bereits aufgeregt vor der anstehenden Tour?

Ja sicher, es ist aufregend die ersten paar Shows zu spielen mit den neuen Songs und allem. Nächste Woche beginnen die Proben und dann werden wir sehen, ob alles passt. Es sind nicht nur die neuen Songs, die aufregend sind, sondern auch viele alte Songs die wir wieder zurückbringen werden und die wir schon seit langem nicht mehr gespielt haben, wie zum Beispiel „The Power Of One“ vom „Silence“-Album, das werden wir sicher öfter bei der anstehenden Tour spielen. Aber auch Sachen vom „Winterheart´s Guild“ Album, hier gibt es einige Songs die mehr Spielzeit verdient haben und aus einigen Gründen immer ausgelassen wurden. Wir werden das Set erneuern und es wird sicher lustig.

Was war deiner Meinung nach die beste Veröffentlichung von anderen Bands in diesem Jahr?

Ich muss auf jeden Fall TRICK OR TREAT erwähnen. Das letzte was ich wirklich genossen habe war “Transcendence” von DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT. Ich bin immer noch beim Reinhören, aber ich liebe es bereits.

Gibt es sonst noch etwas, das du uns sagen willst?

Ich hoffe die Leute werden sich das neue Album anhören sobald es veröffentlicht ist und kommen, um uns live spielen zu sehen, irgendwo in der Nähe sobald wir nächstes Jahr wieder zurück in Europa sind. Die ersten Shows sind nur für den Zeitraum von zwei Wochen geplant, was wirklich zu kurz ist. Aber wir werden im Februar zurück sein und ungefähr sieben Wochen durch Europa touren, also wird es sicher noch mehr Termine geben, die wir in Kürze bekannt geben. Ich hoffe, dass ihr euch auch noch andere Bands außer SONATA ARCTICA ansehen werdet und Merchandise oder was auch immer kauft. Das ist der einzige Weg um sicher zu stellen, das Livemusik auch am Leben bleibt, damit ihr auch in Zukunft die Musik mit euren Kindern und Enkelkindern genießen könnt.

How many Interviews did you already have today?

Just one, like an hour ago. On a slow day I have only three interviews and maybe one mail I´m calling later on. But I have done like maybe 80 or 90 so far but it´s getting slower already.

Do you write the lyrics first or do you already have a melody line in your head when you are composing a song?

It´s like 99% of the time that music comes first and then the song can be actually or is usually really ready before I start writing the lyrics and usually it´s like a month or a few weeks before we actually go to record or I actually start singing but I really activate on that lyrics writing department and then I start really writing and they sort of come out, in one, in a tube in a way but music is first.

How much time does it take to write or compose a song?

It depends, it can take like for example twenty minutes like in case one song of this album but it also can take more than ten years. It depends you know. If I am not really happy with a song that I have, I am working on, I just leave it out, leave it time and try it out like later with the next album and if it doesn´t still feel okay I pass it and let it evolve and find its place and eventually it might be that I worked on a certain song more than ten years. It is anything between 20 minutes and 10 or 20 years.

Which one is a song like that, you have worked on 10 years?

For example “Candle Lawns”, that´s not as old, it´s like five or six years old but “Among the Shooting Stars” is almost ten years or even more. I have rewritten it again many times, it has different forms in a way but finally I found the right form and the right place and I decided now it´s gonna be on the album.

When do the other members get into the creative part?

Well with this album it was more or less them just playing and they get creative when it gets to play solos and such things. It was just such a hurry that we were in when we came back from the north American tour with NIGHTWISH early April this year and we already have to had the album mastered ready for nuclear blast on the end of June, so we had only three months to write the vast majority of the songs and record them and get them ready so it really ned a lot of rush. This is how it usually goes also. Because I have written all the other songs more than a hundred songs and the rest of the guys have written two so far.

So the influence of the other guys isn´t that big?

<Not in the writing process, but of course you know, the other guys make the songs sound like SONATA ARCTICA eventually.

How important is it for you that listeners understand your texts?

It depends on the listener. I am a sort of a listener, especially when I was younger I didn´t really pay attention to the lyrics at all I just enjoyed the music itself, the melodies and everything, the feeling of the song. If you pay attention to the lyrics, if they actually have some kind of message or emotion it´s trying to bring out, its makes the experience richer. In a way, so of course you know, depending on the song. Some songs are more intimate and deeper than others.

What you like more the creative process for a new LP or the touring part?

I like both. They kind of complement each other in a very good way because you know first of all when you are on tour for a long, long time you sort of get bored with the material you have and then I really start aching and dying to write some new material because I really enjoy it. It´s fantastic, I love writing new songs and recording everything and go to the studio and get everything done and then it is of course nice to go on tour again, when you have been in the studio for a long, long time. It is a complete package in a way.

Do you also write songs while you are on tour?

have tried it many times, to write songs but it has proofed time on time again that it is impossible. I can´t concentrate. I need to have my privacy and time, you know, home and my things around me when I am writing songs. It is really intimate situation for me in a way and you never get to have that privacy while you are on road.

In which country you have the most fans?

Ah, wow, that´s impossible to say.

Maybe in Finland?

I am not sure. It used to be like that maybe. I am not sure. Even though we sold gold in Finland with many, many, like most of the albums, that are numbers. We are only like 5 million people in Finland so I don´t know, it´s hard to say.

In which one do you have the craziest fans?

Naturally in all the countries where people have hotter blood, the fans tend to be a little bit crazier, like Latin American people and in Europe like Spanish, Italian and so forth you know.

And how was it in Japan?

Oh Japan, they are kind of wild but in a very weird way. They are like, how to say, stay in control all the time. They don´t let their emotions get debased of them. They don´t go completely wild. It is kind of funny when you see a man for example comes to see the show and he has a suit on and he takes the suit off and folds it into his suitcase and takes a SONATA ARCTICA shirt on and rages around the show and when the show is over he takes the SONATA ARCTICA shirt off and folds it really nicely in his suitcase and takes the suit jacket again and puts it on. It´s really funny. It´s weird.

What is your personal favourite Sonata Arctica Song?

Wow that is really difficult to answer. At the moment I am really attached to the latest album and I love the songs they are somehow close to me right now and they are special but you know I am sure once we get to play them live and get a little bit time, myself, the album and everything, I see the bigger picture. I´m sure some songs will jump out better and the other songs somehow are more time lasting so I think I would mention “Don´t Say a Word” as one of my definite favourites. I am not sure if it´s the best song but it´s a song Im not tired off yet and it is always fun to do live.

According to lyrics or music or both?

Music, the feeling. It might have to do with the fact that it is always the last song that we play. It is like of job well done and then you have to play the last song and it´s “Don´t Say a Word” and it kind of gives the whole song this special feeling I suppose.

And what is your favourite song on the new LP?

Currently I think it is… I like two songs, the slower songs, that are nicer “On the Faultline” and “Among the Shooting Stars” they are pretty. But on the heavier side and the funnier side there is like “Fairytale” which is a more speedy song, but it is really hard to say right now.

The new LP is also about the balance between human society and nature. What do you think that everybody can do better to keep this balance?

Well everybody can do something better, you know, you can recycle more efficiently, try to not pollute, make lasting decisions, drive a smaller car or don´t drive a car if you can somehow avoid it. Make decisions based on how environmentally friendly they are. That´s the way we have to do, but I could actually talk an hour about these things. It´s a lot of small things that make the big difference.

I thought you are travelling a lot, isn´t it also bad for your CO2 footprint?

It is, it is yes of course, you know, but that is something I need to take anyway, to be able to take the message forward and go see people and do what I do. Unless I fly, I would take a sail boat if it was somehow possible but unfortunately not.

You had also a guest appearance on the new TRICK OR TREAT Album. What do you think about TRICK OR TREAT and how was it to work with them?

Well we get to know the guys, because they were opening for us a couple of years back on tour in Europe and they were the funniest guys. It was a lot of fun to tour with them. They are great and fun off stage and on stage. If you haven´t seen them you should go and see them definitely. Of course we got to know them and became friends and all, so when they asked me to join the album process, I was like, yes, sure, of course I join you guys. It was fun, easy, nice working with them and they are really talented and fantastic musicians and Alessandro is just an amazing singer. So it was a lot of fun being part of that song.

Do you have anything else to say about the new album?

If you liked the previous album “Pariahs child” I think you will like this one as well. It´s maybe a little bit, slightly different, but the difference is not by any means as big as we had in the past few albums since “Unia”, “The Days of Grays”, “Stones Grow her Name” and “Pariahs child” it was jumping all over the place and now we have two albums that are somehow more in line, stylistically. So that´s one thing and I am really happy with the way it turned out. It is the most together SONATA ARCTICA album in a long, long time.

A lot of fans like the LP “The Days of Grays”, especially the orchestra part. Do you plan something like that in the future or will it stay the only orchestral version?

We will see what happens. When I was planning, like two years ago, about how this next album would come out, I hadn´t this plan, but it would be really nice to make an orchestral album once again but there were a lot of reasons why this didn´t come to happen. I was happy that we managed to get back “White Pearl, Black Oceans Part II” with an orchestra and things but maybe in the future we will bring more of that in, but you know, the more orchestra we bring in and use on the album, the more we get comparisons with NIGHTWISH and that sucks. That´s not necessarily a bad thing or a burden but there are a lot of bands that are doing the orchestras lately in these days. It´s somehow healthy as well if there is at least one band who is not walking that road and using it so extensively.

Are you already excited about the upcoming tour?

Of course, it is exciting to play the first few shows with the new songs and everything. We gonna have rehearsals the next week and see how everything works out and it´s not only the new songs that are exciting but also a lot of the old songs that we are bringing back. Some stuff that we haven´t played in the longest time, like for example, I can tell you “The Power of One” from the “Silence” Album and that´s gonna be something that we are gonna play live a lot in the forthcoming tours. But also something from the “Winterheart´s Guild” Album, there are some songs that would deserve more playtime, for some reasons they were just left out. We´re gonna renew the set a lot. It´s gonna be fun.

What do you think was the best album release from other bands this year?

Of course I have to mention TRICK OR TREAT. The latest one I have really enjoyed was “Transcendence” by DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT. I´m still kind of taking it in, but I already love it.

Anything else to mention?

I hope that people will check out the new album when it´s out and will come and see us live, somewhere near, we will be back in Europe actually next year. This first leg is only two weeks and it is way too short but there is a reason for that. But we are back in February and that´s gonna be like seven weeks in Europe, so there will be way more dates. The dates will be announced shortly. I hope before any of SONATA ARCTICA stuff happen, you all go and see other bands play live and then buy their merchandise and whatever because that´s the only way you gonna make sure that live music stays alive, also in the future and enjoy this music with your own kids and grandchildren.
