TARJA TURUNEN zählt zu den ganz Großen des Symphonic Metals und mit ihrer überragenden Stimme konnte die Finnin auch nach ihrem Ausstieg bei NIGHTWISH solo voll durchstarten, ehemalige Fans behalten und auch neue dazugewinnen. Nun hatten wir die Gelegenheit mit TARJA über das neue Album " The Shadow Self", ihre Familie, Zukunftsvisionen und ihre besondere Verbindung zu Österreich zu sprechen. Aber lest selbst:


Hallo! Es ist schön, die Möglichkeit zu haben, mit dir zu sprechen. Wie geht es dir und wo bist du im Moment?


Hallo! Es geht mir gut! Ich bin im Moment in Spanien.




An welchem Ort fühlst du dich mehr zu Hause - in Finnland oder deiner neuen Wahlheimat Argentinien?


Das Gefühl von Finnland, wenn ich dorthin zurückkehre, ist natürlich dass es mein Heimatland ist. Jeder spricht Finnisch, und es ist mein Heimatland in dem Sinn, dass ich Finnin bin. Aber ich habe vor so vielen Jahren beschlossen, nicht mehr in Finnland zu leben, und Argentinien gab mir da eine Chance mich wirklich in diesem Sinne frei zu fühlen. Weil ich in Finnland eine super bekannte Person bin, ist es möglicherweise ein negatives Wort zu sagen, dass es mich stört, aber wenn du eine so bekannte Person bist, folgt man dir überall. In Finnland konnte nicht ich ins Schwimmbad gehen oder Ähnliches. Jeder würde Bilder von mir machen. In Argentinien ist es so groß rund um Buenos Aires, und ich war schon bekannt, aber nicht auf diese Weise, und in den letzten Jahren war Argentinien mein Heimatland, und ich lebte sehr, sehr super bequem dort. Es war sehr schwierig, aber ich würde nie sagen, dass ich die Verbindung zu Finnland verloren habe. Man sagt: "Du kannst ein Mädchen aus Finnland wegnehmen, aber du kannst niemals Finnland von dem Mädchen wegnehmen!"


Wie hast du Max Lilja (Ex-APOCALYPTICA) für deine Band gefunden?


Nach dem ersten Album dachte ich über ein Lineup für eine Band zum Touren nach, und ich wollte unbedingt einen Cello-Spieler haben, da mein erstes Album voller Celloklänge war, und ich liebe ganz allgemein den melancholischen Klang des Cellos - es bringt mich zum Weinen, es macht mich glücklich, es ist ein sehr hervorragendes Instrument. Max war verfügbar, und ich habe ihn zuvor in Helsinki und an anderen Orten getroffen. Also kontaktierte ich ihn und er war da am Anfang meiner Karriere, so hat das geklappt.


Es gab mehrere Veränderungen in der Band. Warum hast du dich von Drummer Mike Terrana getrennt?


Ich möchte nicht auf die Einzelheiten dazu eingehen, aber wenn man eine Band hat, dann gibt es Änderungen im Lineup - verschiedene Bassisten, verschiedene Gitarristen oder Schlagzeuger. Jeder von diesen Jungs arbeitet nicht nur mit mir zusammen, sie sind auch mit anderen Projekten beschäftigt. Mit meinen Jungs arbeitete ich so viele Jahre zusammen, und ich glaube, er wollte etwas anderes in seinem Leben machen, und auch ich wollte etwas anderes in meinem Leben versuchen. Es ist manchmal wirklich schön, alternative Dinge zu probieren, denn wenn im Leben Stillstand eintritt, kommt man nicht mehr voran. Das war, was ich in meiner Musik hören möchte - ein Fortschritt und als Person möchte ich eine Menge Fortschritte machen.


Jetzt zu deinen neuen Alben!
Als erstes zu "The Brightest Void". Darauf veröffentlichst du das Duett "Paradise (What About Us)" mit Sharon den Adel. Seid ihr gut befreundet?


Ich könnte schon sagen, dass wir befreundet sind. Wir haben uns nicht so oft getroffen, aber wenn wir uns trafen, verbrachten wir immer gemeinsam eine gute Zeit. Sie ist so eine schöne Person, und ich mag sie wirklich. Also beschlossen wir, gemeinsam diesen Song zu machen. Das erste Mal, dass wir versuchten gemeinsam aufzutreten, ist viele, viele Jahre her. Aber wir konnten damals unsere Vorstellungen nicht aneinander anpassen, so dass es sehr schön war, jetzt diesen Song zu performen und den Song aufzunehmen. Das war eine große Gelegenheit und es wurde wie ein neues Lied für mich.


Es gibt darauf auch ein Cover von "Goldfinger" - bist du James Bond-Fan?


Ja, bin ich! Vor allem Sean Connery ist mein Favorit. James Bond hat mich immer begleitet seit ich ein Kind war, und auch die Musik und die Künstler, die diese Songs damals gemacht haben. Und sie waren meine Inspiration für meinen Bond-Song "In For A Kill" auf dem Album "What Lies Beneath". Aber das Lied "Goldfinger" ist wirklich schwierig zu singen. Vor vielen Jahren musste ich es bei einer TV-Show in Finnland singen, und ich fand es sehr schwierig, aber ich wollte eines Tages zu diesem Song zurückfinden und dann war es Zeit dafür. Ich nahm diesen Song mit meiner Band im letzten Jahr in Südamerika auf, und er ist in dieser Version wirklich nett. Und er war passend für "The Brightest Void".




Auf dem neuen Album "The Shadow Self" sind zwei Duette. Das erste mit Alissa White-Gluz von ARCH ENEMY. Wann hattest du die Idee, mit ihr einen Song zu machen?


Nun, seit Februar nahm ich eigentlich nur meine eigene Stimme für diesen Song auf. Üblicherweise nehme ich meinen Gesang immer zuletzt auf für die Produktion. Und ich dachte, das Lied ist okay, aber es hatte nicht diese Extra-Energie, um die es in dem Song geht. Und ich wollte etwas Crowling oder harsche Vocals dazu, zu denen ich nicht in der Lage war, so dass ich an sie dachte. In allen Liedern gibt es einige Gegensätze. Ich habe Texte über Himmel und Hölle, Liebe und Hass und Positives und Negatives in unserem Leben geschrieben. Diese Art von Ying und Yang-Sachen, so war sie mit ihrem Gesang das Gegenteil von mir. Aber sie hat auch schöne Clean-Vocals bei diesem Song.


Das zweite Duett "Eagle Eye" ist mit deinem Bruder Toni. Hast du eine gute Beziehung zu ihm?


Ja, ich liebe ihn so sehr und ich wollte ihm auch die Möglichkeit geben zu zeigen, was er alles kann. Er hat wirklich eine schöne Stimme und er entschloss sich hauptsächlich Musik zu machen. In gewisser Weise war dies mein Weg, ihm zu helfen. Er ist sehr talentiert und spielt viele Instrumente. Hoffentlich kann er in den folgenden Zeiten von der Musik leben.


Bei deinem ersten Song "Innocence" singst du zu großartiger Klaviermusik. Hast du da Klavier gespielt?


Nein, bei diesem Lied nicht. In den anderen Songs spielte ich aber schon selbst. Es ist ein sehr schönes Lied. Ein Freund aus Deutschland, mit dem ich vor vielen Jahren studiert habe, ist ein ausgezeichneter Pianist. Er zeichnete die Klavier-Parts im vergangenen Dezember in Deutschland auf und es war wirklich toll. Ich brauchte wirklich jemand Professionellen dafür, darum konnte ich es nicht selbst machen.


Die Musik von "Diva" klingt ein bisschen wie Jahrmarkt-Musik. Warum hast du dafür diese Art von Musik verwendet?


Dieser Song ist sehr kinematografisch und enthält viel Gesang. Im Allgemeinen ist er von "Fluch Der Karibik" inspiriert und man findet eine Menge von Ozean- und Meer-Thematik darin - die Piraten, die Betrunkenen und alle diese Szenerien. Als das Lied geschrieben wurde, war das die beste Umrahmung für diese Art Song.


Wie lange hast du an dem Album gearbeitet?


Das Schreiben dauerte lange Zeit, weil wir lange auf Tour waren, und ich kann auf Tour nicht wirklich schreiben. Aber ich begann, als ich nach Hause kam bzw. in der Karibik auf eine sehr ruhigen, schönen Insel, wo ich in den letzten paar Jahren lebte. Es ist ein schöner Ort zu schreiben. Ich kann Lieder in der Karibik schreiben und sie kommen sehr dunkel herüber.




Du wirst in diesem Jahr auf verschiedenen Festivals spielen und im Herbst gehst du auf große Tour. Was gefällt dir mehr - auf einem Festival spielen oder bei einer Tour?


Es ist ein sehr großer Spaß auf einem Festival zu spielen, man trifft viele Menschen und anderen Bands. Es ist durchaus eine Feier-Zeit für alle und alle haben eine gute Zeit. In diesem Sinne mag ich es auf einem Festival aufzutreten und all die verschiedenen Dinge auf einem Festival zu sehen. Es gibt so viele verschiedene Arten von Bands und es herrscht eine massive Energie vom Anfang bis zum Ende. Aber auf der anderen Seite gibt es auf einer Tour nichts als deine eigene Show, es herrscht eine dichte Atmosphäre und die Verbindung zum Publikum ist immer super-special.


Im Oktober wirst du auch nach Wien kommen. Kennst du Österreich ein wenig?


Ich war das erste Mal dort, als ich 15 oder 16 war und ich besuchte nur Wien. Ich war zu der Zeit auf der Musik-Highschool. Und danach waren andere Städte auf meiner Konzert-Tour-Liste. Ich werde mich immer an die Berge erinnern, es ist das Schönste sie anzusehen - es beruhigt einfach.


Magst du es auf Tour zu sein, und ist deine Tochter immer bei dir?


Mein Kind Naomi wurde vor wenigen Tagen vier, und sie war immer überall mit mir auf Tour. Wir fanden eine gute Balance, weil mein Mann mit mir arbeitet, und so waren wir immer als Familie zusammen. Aber es wird sich ändern, wenn sie in die Schule geht, was bald passieren wird, deshalb werden wir nach Europa zurück übersiedeln. Wir sind jetzt in Spanien auf der Suche, wo sie mit der Schule beginnen kann. Es wird auf jeden Fall unser Leben verändern, unsere Rollen und sie wird uns mehr und mehr brauchen. Mein Mann wird zu Hause bleiben und es wird wirklich schwierig werden, aber wir werden es hinkriegen.


Du spieltest legendäre Konzerte in verschiedenen Kirchen. Wurden das besonderen Momente für dich?


Ich mag generell die Atmosphäre. Ich bin live in Kirchen aufgetreten, seit ich ein Teenager war. Mein erstes Kirchenkonzert war mit 14 Jahren und die Kirche war mit Menschen aus meiner Heimatstadt gefüllt. Danach bin ich während meiner Ausbildung in Kirchen aufgetreten. In meiner Karriere gab es viele Kirchenkonzerte und es herrschte immer eine besondere Atmosphäre und man schafft sehr schöne Gefühle. Die Leute gehen dort hin um zuzuhören und sich zu entspannen und zu beruhigen. Die Weihnachtszeit ist für mich immer die Zeit, wo wir uns entspannen sollten und in Finnland gibt es sehr häufig spezielle Weihnachts-Touren. In musikalischer Hinsicht geschehen viele Dinge im Dezember. Für mich ist es immer eine Zeit auf das Jahr zurück zu blicken und für alles dankbar zu sein.


Gibt es einen besonderen Ort, wo du ein Konzert spielen möchtest?


Nun, ehrlich, es würde nicht eine Kirche sein, ich würde gerne eines Tages in der Royal Albert Hall in London oder ähnlichem auftreten. Oder im Teatro Colon, das ist ein sehr schönes Opernhaus in Buenos Aires. Wow, es wäre einmalig, dort eines Tages auf die Bühne zu gehen. Ich werde weiter davon träumen.


Was sind deine Pläne für die Zukunft?


Nun, ein neues Album! Offensichtlich denke ich immer an ein neues Album, und ich beginne in der Regel ziemlich schnell damit, zu schreiben. Ein Künstler zu sein ist eine nie endende Geschichte! Es wird eine Menge Touren mit "The Shadow Self" geben und diese Touren werden bis Ende 2017 dauern, es wird auch Festivals im nächsten Sommer geben, und weitere Touren in Südamerika, Amerika, Russland. Und ich will auch meine Familie sehen,und ich möchte nicht so viele Wochen "on the road" sein, deshalb werden wir viele Pausen zwischen den Touren machen. Am "The Voice Of Finland" -TV Programm möchte ich mich in diesem Jahr auch wieder beteiligen. Einige klassische Musik-Events wird es zwischen den Rock-Touren geben. Hoffentlich wird alles glatt gehen mit dem Album-Release, es gibt mir die Chance zu touren.


Und schließlich ein paar letzte Worte an deine Fans?


Ich bin super aufgeregt über die Möglichkeit, ein Konzert in Wien zu spielen, und ich bin immer glücklich, nach Österreich zurückzukehren. Es ist schon ein besonderer Ort für mich seit vielen, vielen Jahren. Ich danke dir, ich danke euch für die Unterstützung und Liebe und all die Super Nachrichten, die ihr mir schickt, die Grüße und die Energie, und Energie brauche ich jeden Tag! Vielen Dank!

Hello! Nice to have the possibility to talk with you. How are you and where are you at the moment?


Hello! I´m fine! I am at the moment in Spain.


What place do you feel more at home - in Finland or in Argentina?


The feeling of Finland whenever I return there, obliviously it is my home-country. Everybody is speaking Finnish, and it is my home-country in that sense that I am a Finn. But I have decided so many years ago to live away from Finland, and Argentina gave me a chance really to feel free in that sense, because I am a super known person in Finland, it´s a negative word to say that bother me, but when you are a so known person, everybody follows you everywhere. In Finland I couldn´t go to swimming pool or things like that. Everybody would take pictures from me. In Argentina, it´s so huge to Buenos Aires and I was known there, but not in that way, and for the last years Argentina has been my home-country, and I lived very, very super comfortable there. It was very difficult, but I would never say, that I lost the connection with Finland. They say: “You can take a girl away from Finland, but you cannot take Finland away from the girl!”


How did you find Max Lilja (Ex-APOCALYPTICA) for your band?


After the first album I was thinking about a line-up for a band for tours, and I wanted to have a cello-player, because my first album was full of cello and I love the melancholic sound of cello in general – it makes me crying it makes me happy, it´s a very excellent instrument. Max might be available, and I have met him before in Helsinki or on other places. So I contacted him, and he has been there at the beginning of my career, so it has been safe.


There were several changes in your band. Why did you split up with Mike Terrana?


I don´t want to go into details about what happened, but if you don´t have a band, there are changes in a line-up – different bass-players, different guitar-players or drummers. Everyone of this guys are not only working with me, they are also working with other projects. With my guys I was working so many years together, and I think he wanted to see something else in his live, and I wanted to try something else in my life. It´s sometimes really nice to try alternate things, because if you get stop in your life, you won’t progress anymore. That was what I want for my music – a progress, and as a person I want a lot of progress.


Now to your new albums!
First to "The Brightest Void". There you released a duet „Paradise (What About Us)“ with Sharon den Adel. Are you good friend with her?


I could say, that I am friend with her. We haven´t met so many times with her, but whenever we met, we definitely shared good time. She is a beautiful person and I really love her. So we decided to make the song together. First time when we were trying to perform together, is many, many years ago. But we haven´t been able to match our schedules, so it was very beautiful now to perform the song, to record the song, and it was a big opportunity, and it became like a new song for me.


There is also a cover from "Goldfinger" - are you James Bond-fan?


Yes, I am! Especially Sean Connery is my favourite. James Bond has always been with me since I was a kid, and also the music and the artist doing these songs this time. And it´s been my inspiration for my Bond-song “In For A Kill” at the album “What Lies Beneath”. But this song “Goldfinger” is really difficult to sing. Many years ago I needed to sing it at a TV-show in Finland and I found it very difficult, but I wanted be back at this song some day, and it was time for it. I recorded this song with my band in South-America last year, and it´s really nice in this version. And it was good for "The Brightest Void".


On the new album "The Shadow Self" are two duets. First with Alissa White-Gluz from ARCH ENEMY. When did you have the idea, to make a song with her?


Well, since February I recorded actually only my own vocals for this song. I usually record my vocals at last for the production. And I thought, the song is okay, but there was not that extra-energy what the song is calling. And I wanted to add there some growling or harsh vocals, which I was not able to do, so I was thinking of her. In all the songs there are some opposites. I´ve been writing lyrics about heaven and hell, love and hate and positives and negatives in our life. This kind of Yin and Yang-thing, so she has been the opposite of me with her vocals. But she also has beautiful clean vocals on this song.


Second duet “Eagle Eye” is with your brother Toni. Do you have a good relationship with him?

Yes, I love him so much, and I also wanted to give him the chance to show, what he is able to do. He is having a really beautiful voice, and he determined to do music in general. In a way this was my way to help him. He is very talented and plays many instruments. Hopefully he can live from music in the following time.


At your first song “Innocence” you sing with great piano-music. Were you playing the piano?


No, in that song not. In the other songs I was playing. It´s a very beautiful song. A friend from Germany, with whom I studied years ago is an excellent pianist, and he recorded the piano-parts in Germany last December and it was really great. I really needed a professional one, so I couldn´t do it myself.


The music from “Diva” sounds a little bit like funfair-music. Why did you decide to use this kind of music?


This song is very cinematographic and has a lot of vocals in it. In general it is inspired by “Pirates Of The Caribbean”, there is a lot of ocean and sea-theme in it – the pirates, the drunks and all that scenes. When the song was actually written it was the best transportation for this type of a song.


How long did you work at this album?


Writing took long time, because we were long time on tour, and I cannot really write on tour. But I started when I came back home or in the Caribbean at very quiet, beautiful island, where I was living in the last couple of years. It´s a beautiful place to write. I can write songs in the Caribbean and they come out very dark.


You will play at several festivals this year, and in autumn you will go to a big tour. What do you like more - play at a festival or at a tour?


It´s a very great fun to play at a festival, to meet many people and other bands. It´s quite a celebration time for everybody and all have a good time. In that sense I like to perform at a festival and see all the different things at a festival. There are so many different types of bands and there is a massive energy from the beginning to the end. But on the other hand on a tour there is nothing like your own show, it is a big atmosphere and the connection to your audience is always super-special.


In October you will also come to Vienna. Do you know Austria a little bit?


I was there first time when I was 15 or 16 and I visited only Vienna. I was at music high school this time. And after that were other cities on my concert-tour-list. I will always remember the mountains, it is the most beautiful thing to watch them – it calms you down.


Do you like to be on tour, and is your daughter always with you?


My child Naomi turned four some days ago, and she has been always with me on tour everywhere. We found a good balance because my husband is working with me too, so we were always together as a family. But it will change when she goes to school, that will happen soon, so we will be relocating back to Europe, and we are now in Spain and we are looking where she can start with school. It will definitely change our life, our roles, she will need us more and more. My husband will stay at home and it will be really difficult, but we will go through it.


You played legendary concerts in different churches. Were these special moments for you?


I like in general the atmosphere. I´ve been playing or performing in churches since I was a teenager. My first church concert was when I was 14, and the church was filled with people of my hometown. After that I was performing in churches trough my education. In my career there were lots of church-concerts and there is always a special atmosphere, and you create very nice concerts and feelings. People go there to listen and relax and to calm down. In Christmas-time is for me always the time where we should relax, and in Finland it is very common to make special Christmas-tours. Music wise there are lots of things happening in December. For me it is always a time to look back at the year and to be grateful for all.


Would there be a special place, where you want to play a concert?


Well, honest it will not be a church, I would love it to perform one day in the Royal Albert Hall in London or something like that. Or Teatro Colon, that is a very beautiful opera house in Buenos Aires. Wow, it would be amazing to walk there on stage one day. I will keep on dreaming.


What are your plans for the future?


Well, a new album! Obviously I´m always thinking on a new album, and I usually start writing pretty soon. To be an artist is a never-ending story! There will be a lot of touring with "The Shadow Self" and we will last the tours in the end of 2017. There will be festivals next summer too, and there will be several tours in South-America, America, Russia. And also I want to see my family, I don´t want to be on the road for so many weeks, so we will make a lot of breaks between that tours. “The Voice Of Finland”-TV-Program I want to be involved this year again. Some classical music-events will be between the rock-tours. Hopefully it will be all fine with the album-release, it gives me the chance to tour.


And finally some last words to your fans?


I´m super excited about the opportunity to have a concert in Vienna and I´m always happy to return to Austria. It´s been a special place for me for many, many years. I thank you, I thank you for the support and love and all the super messages you are giving to me, and sending me regards and energy, and energy I need every day! Thank you!
