Seit 25 Jahren sind die Depressive Rock/Metaller KATATONIA ein wichtiger Teil der Metal Szene und konnten stets ihre Fans begeistern. Anlässlich des Tuska Metal Open Airs hatten wir die Gelegenheit, mit Bass-Player Niklas Sandin eine interessante Unterhaltung zu führen.


Hallo! Schön, dich hier in Finnland zu treffen. Ist dies das erste Mal, dass du auf diesem Festival spielst?


Mein erstes Mal dass ich mit KATATONIA bei diesem Festival gespielt habe war 2011, also ist es nun schon fünf Jahre her. Es ist also verdammt gute Zeit für uns wieder hier her zu kommen, und es hätte schon früher sein können.




Du bist seit 2010 bei KATATONIA. Wie war es für dich in diese Band zu kommen?


Wirklich anders. Ich habe in Underground-Bands gespielt, die einzige etablierte Band, wo ich spielte war für ein paar Jahre SIEBENBÜRGEN. Aber KATATONIA war die erste Band, die ausgedehnte Tourneen machte, und so war es gut, die Underground-Szene für die siebenwöchigen Touren durch ganz Europa zu verlassen, wovon die erste für mich damals 2010 war.


In diesem Jahr ist KATATONIA’s 25jähriges Jubiläum. Gibt es besondere Pläne, dies zu feiern?


Nun, wir machen zwei spezielle Shows für das 10jährige Jubiläum des "The Great Cold Distance" Albums. Eines ist in Bulgarien mit dem Plovdiv-Orchester, und dann eines in London, das ein Teil der Tour ist. An beiden Standorten werden wir das ganze Album von vorne nach hinten spielen. Damit ist das unsere Feier, aber nicht für das 25-jährige Jubiläum.


KATATONIA wird von vielen Menschen geliebt, aber einige von ihnen haben ein großes Problem mit eurem Stilwechsel. Warum habt ihr euch entschieden, mit eurer Musik so „soft“ zu werden?


Es ist fast 18 Jahre her, seit die Band sich vom heavy Sound mit den harsh Vocals in Richtung dieses Prog-Sounds verändert hat. Dann haben sie sich wieder mehr zum Metal-Sound mit vielen anderen Arten von Einflüssen entwickelt, mit einem großen atmosphärischen Hintergrund. Ich kann nicht sagen, was diese Art der Änderung bewirkt hat. Ich war da noch nicht Teil von ihnen. Aber ich denke, was Sie musikalisch dem Publikum näherbringen wollen ist, dass Sie fühlen, was sie spielen möchten. Es ist nicht gut in einem Genre festzustecken, weil man damit begonnen hat. Tu was du fühlst und bleib dir selbst treu.


Jetzt zu eurem neuen Album "The Fall Of Hearts". Was ist die Grundidee hinter diesem Titel?


Die Grundidee ist, das gute KATATONIA-Vermächtnis weiterzuführen. Es ist sehr viel vom Stil und der Atmosphäre von KATATONIA der letzten paar Alben enthalten. Ich denke, das ist ein bisschen ein größeres Album, man kann mehr aus der Vergangenheit hören. Es ist nicht ein Album, das so klingt, aber es fühlt sich auch sie ein wenig wie die früheren Aufnahmen an, die es ein wenig mehr weiter und größer in den Sound-Elementen macht. Aber es gibt keine harsh Vocals oder solche Sachen, aber wir denken, dass man auf jeden Fall kann man viel von den alten Sachen auf diesem Album hören kann.


Was ist die Idee hinter dem Artwork - es ist so sehr dunkel und macht traurig?


Ich denke, es ist etwas, das die Musik auch widerspiegeln sollte, weil die Musik ganz dunkel ist. Deshalb sollte man ein wenig das Gefühl für die Musik bekommen, wenn man das Cover betrachtet. So hat man etwas, das die Musik widerspiegelt. Wir könnten auch ein Einhorn auf dem Album-Cover haben, aber das würde nicht funktionieren.




Wie lange habt ihr an dem Album gearbeitet, und was ist euer Weg, um neue Musik zu schaffen? Sind alle beteiligt?


Es beginnt immer dann, wenn Anders Nyström die Songs zu schreiben beginnt, Ideen bekommt, die Songs zusammenstellt, und er die Ideen mit Jonas Renkse teilt, und wenn sie etwas mehr als Songstrukturen haben, dann teilen sie es mit uns anderen, und dann können wir beginnen darüber nachzudenken, was wir dazu beitragen wollen. Ich denke, sie haben mehr als ein Jahr bevor wir ins Studio gingen zu schreiben begonnen. Wir können diesen kreativen Prozess nicht machen, wenn wir auf Tour sind, weil dann ist die ganze Konzentration darauf ist. Wenn sich eine Lücke dazwischen ergibt, wird mit dem Schreiben begonnen.


Wo findet ihr eure Inspiration?


Ich denke, das kann man an den Texten sehen. Es geht um das tägliche Leben, die Kämpfe, deshalb nehmen wir die Inspiration aus dem Leben – das ganz alltägliche Leben! Jeder kann die Texte lesen und ich denke, viele Leute finden diese in ihrem eigenen Leben. Jeder hat dunkle Momente in seinem Leben und reflektiert darauf, und sieht sich selbst auch in den Texten. Ich denke, das ist es warum es so erfolgreich ist. Es ist nicht so, wie Texte über einen geliebten Menschen, mit dem man einem gewissen Film ansieht und Popcorn isst. Es geht mehr um die Art von Kämpfen in einer Beziehung.


Welche Gefühle möchtet ihr in euren Fans erschaffen?


Natürlich wollen wir gute Gefühle zu erzeugen, und wir wollen sie hinausschicken, um Menschen dazu zu bringen diese Musik zu hören, wenn sie sich schlecht fühlen. Ansonsten können sie vielleicht etwas über sich selbst erkennen, wenn sie Probleme oder anderes haben, und sie sich dann nicht allein fühlen, und ihnen vielleicht sogar die Musik helfen kann. Was mich betrifft, fühle ich mich dann innerlich viel besser, statt mir MASTERPLAN oder HAMMERFALL anzuhören. Das funktioniert einfach nicht bei tiefen Emotionen. Ich denke, wir müssen uns etwas Dunkles anhören, um aus der Dunkelheit herauszufinden. Es macht Sinn. Wie wir Schweden immer sagen: "Nach dem Regen kommt der Sonnenschein!"


Ihr geht im Herbst auf eine große Tour durch Europa. Ihr werdet auch nach Österreich kommen. Kennst du Österreich ein wenig?


Ich bin noch nie normal dazu gekommen das Land zu besuchen, aber ich habe dort gespielt, und ich freue mich auf diese 6-7 Wochen Tour durch Europa und dieses Orchester-Konzert in Bulgarien, und auch auf die Süd-Amerika-Tour im August.




Wie ist eine so lange Tour für dich?


Es ist gut. Es ist ein bisschen schwierig, weil ich eine Freundin hier in Helsinki habe, und ich werde sie sehr vermissen, deshalb könnte es ein wenig schwierig sein. Aber ich mag diese langen Touren und ich komme dann immer in diesen Gig-Modus und konzentriere mich darauf, eine gute Show für die Fans zu machen. Wenn wir auf Tour gehen, dann funktioniert alles wie ein Uhrwerk.


Habt ihr immer Zeit die Städte ein wenig zu sehen, oder seid ihr nur in der Location?


Manchmal ist es möglich, aber einige Tage ist man so lange unterwegs, kommt so spät an den Ort, und dann hat man vielleicht eine Stunde um herumzulaufen. Manchmal möchte ich etwas ein wenig erforschen, aber wenn ich gehe und keine Ahnung habe, was es zu sehen gibt und wo ich bin, und ich vielleicht verloren gehen könnte, dann gehe ich besser zurück zum Veranstaltungsort. Dann ist Zeit für die Presse und anderes, und dann spielen wir. Meistens ist nicht genug Zeit für Sightseeing.


Gibt es einen besonderen Ort, an dem du ein Konzert spielen möchtest?


Vielleicht klingt es wie ein Klischee, aber Helsinki ist immer gut, es ist immer schön. Noch bevor ich mich hier in ein Mädchen verliebt habe fühlte ich, dass dies meine zweite Heimat ist. Ich habe Freunde hier und es ist immer eine tolle Sache, wenn wir hier auf die Bühne gehen, und auch das Publikum ist so laut und fröhlich wie in Südamerika. Du weißt hier wirklich, dass jeder wegen dir da ist und sich wirklich auf die Musik konzentriert. Natürlich wird Südamerika schön werden. Es ist lange her. Zuletzt spielten wir vor fünf Jahren dort so wie bei Tuska.


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Plan für die Zukunft ist das neue Album zu promoten, so viel wie möglich auf Tour zu gehen. Wir haben sehr viel Freude mit diesem Album und versuchen, es zu dem weltweiten Publikum zu nahe zu bringen. Vielleicht versuchen wir auch etwas Neues. Wir haben zum Beispiel noch nie in Japan gespielt, das sollte das nächste auf der Liste sein.




Und schließlich ein paar letzte Worte an eure Fans?


Bleibt in der Schule, weil es cool ist, und bleibt dabei - das funktioniert immer.

Hello! Nice to meet you here in Finland. Is this the first time you play at this festival?


My first time playing with KATATONIA at this festival was 2011, so it´s been already five years ago now. So it´s damned good time to come back here for us, and it could have been done already earlier.


You are since 2010 with KATATONIA. How was it for you come to this band?


Quite different. I was playing in underground-bands, the only established band where I was playing was SIEBENBÜRGEN for a couple of years. But KATATONIA was the first band that did extensive touring, so it was good to leave from the underground scenes to the seven week long tours through whole Europe, which was the first one for me back in 2010.


This year is KATATONIA´s 25th anniversary! Are there any special plans to celebrate this?


Well, we are doing two special shows for the 10th anniversary of the “The Great Cold Distance” album. One is in Bulgaria with the Plovdiv-orchestra, and then one in London, which is part of the tour. On both locations we will play the whole album from front to back. So that is our celebration, but not for the 25th anniversary.


KATATONIA is loved from many people, but some of them have ab big problem with the change of your style. Why did you decide to become so “soft” with your music?


It is almost 18 years since the band changed from the heavy sound with the harsh vocals to this kind of more prog sound. Then they have evolved in this again metal sound with lots of other kind of influences, with a big atmospheric in the background. I can´t say what may the kind of change back then. I was not part of them. But I guess, what you want to transpire musicwise to the audience and what you feel that you want to play. It is not good sticking in one genre, because you began with that. Do what you feel and be true to yourself.


Now to your new album “The Fall Of Hearts”. What is the basic idea behind this title?


The basic idea is, to keep the good KATATONIA legacy going on. It is very much in the style and vibe of KATATONIA in all about for the last couple of records. I think, this is a little bit bigger album, you can hear more from the past. It´s not one album that sounds like this, also it tastes a little bit from earlier records, which makes it a little bit more wide and bigger in sound-elements. But there are no harsh vocals or things like that, but we think definitely you can hear everything all from the old ones at this album.


What is the idea behind the artwork – it is so very dark and makes sad?


I think it is something that should reflect the music as well, because the music is quite dark. So you should get a little bit of the feeling for the music when you are looking at the cover. So you have something that reflects the music. We could also have some unicorn at the album cover, but that wouldn´t work.


How long did you work at the album, and what is your way to create new music? Is everybody involved?


It always begins when Anders Nyström begins to write the songs, getting ideas, putting songs together, and he is sharing ideas with Jonas Renkse, and when they have something more than song structures, then they share it with us others, and then we can start to think about, what we want to contribute. I think, they started to write a little over a year, before we went into studio. Because we cannot do this creative process when we are on tour, then is all the focus on that. When a gap is in between the writing starts.


Where do you find your inspiration?


I guess, you can see it in the lyrics. It´s about all day life, the struggles, so we take the inspiration from life – all day life! Everybody can read the lyrics and I think, lots of people will find this in their life. Everybody has dark moments in his life and can reflect, and see themselves in the lyrics as well. I think, this is why it is so successful. It´s not like lyrics taking a loved one to some movie eating popcorn. It´s more about kind of struggles in a relationship.


What feelings do you want to generate in your fans?


Of course, we want to generate good feelings, and we are sending out to people to listen to that music, when they feel bad. Otherwise maybe they will see their self in something, when they have problems or others, they don´t feel alone, and maybe actually the music can help. For me, I feel much more better inside, instead of listening to MASTERPLAN or HAMMERFALL. It doesn´t work for deep emotions. I think, we have to listen to something dark to get out of the darkness. It makes sense. As we say in Sweden: “After rain comes the sunshine!”


You will go on a big tour through Europe in autumn. You will also come to Austria. Do you know Austria a little bit?


I have never been there regular visiting the country, but I was playing there, and I´m looking forward to this 6-7 weeks tour through Europa and that orchestra-gig in Bulgaria, and in August to the South-America-tour as well.


How is such a long tour for you?


It´s good. It´s a little bit difficult because I have a girlfriend here in Helsinki, and I will miss her very much, so it could be a little bit challenging. But I really like this long tours and I really get into the whole gig-thing and focus doing a good show for the fans. When we go on tour it all works like a clockwork.


Do you always have time to watch the cities a little bit, or are you only at the location?


Sometimes it is possible, but some days you drive so long, come to the location so late, and you have maybe one hour to go out and walk around. Sometimes I want to research a little bit, but when I go out and have no idea what to see and where I am and I maybe get lost, so I better go back to the venue. Then is time for the press and others and then we are playing. Most time is not enough time for sightseeing.


Is there a special place where you want to play a concert?


Maybe it sounds like a cliché but Helsinki is always good, it´s always nice. Even before I felt in love with a girl here, I felt that this is my second home. I have friends here and its always appreciate when we go on stage, even the audience is that loud and cheerful like in South Amerika. You really know, that everybody is there for you and really focussing on the music. Of course, South America will be nice. It´s long in between. Last time we played there is five years like at Tuska.


What are your plans for the future?


Plan for the future is to promote the new album, go on tour as much as possible. We are very glad with this album and try to spread it to the worldwide audience. Maybe we try to make some new. We have never been to Japan for example, so that will be the next in the bucket list.


And finally some last words to your fans?


Stay in school because it´s cool, and keep it on – that always works!
