Offiziell gibt es das finnische Power Metal-Gesapnn STRATOVARIUS schon 30 Jahre. Bassist Lauri ist sich aber da nicht so sicher sicher, ob dieser Geburtstag überhaupt schon erreicht ist oder doch schon in der Vergangenheit liegt. Nichts desto trotz veröffentlichte man kürzlich ein neues "Best Of" über das sich der quirlige Bassist gerne mit uns unterhielt.

Hey Lauri, was tut sich im Moment bei STRATOVARIUS?

Alles bestens, wir haben gerade die „Eternal“ Welttournee beendet und ein Best-Of veröffentlicht. Jetzt kommen noch ein paar Sommer-Festivals und dann werden wir langsam über das nächste Album, oder was auch immer da kommen mag, nachdenken.

Wie erwähnt, habt ihr gerade ein neues Best-Of veröffentlicht, um das 30-jährige Bestehen von STRATOVARIUS zu feiern. Wie schwer war es, die Songliste dafür zusammenzustellen?

Natürlich war es verdammt schwer einzelne Songs aus diesem riesigen Katalog auszuwählen. Timo Kotipelto hat die Tracklist so zusammengestellt, wie bei einem Konzert, also folgt das Ganze einer gewissen Linie.

Was kannst du mir über den neuen Track „Unitl The End Of Days“, der auch darauf zu finden ist, erzählen?

“Until The End Of Days“ ist grundsätzlich ein Song, der bei der „Eternals“ Session übriggeblieben ist, weil er irgendwie nicht dazugepasst hat, auch wenn wir ihn da schon sehr mochten. Das Best-Of gab uns eine gute Chance den Song noch raus zu bekommen.

Im Package findet man auch eine Live-CD. Was hat euch dazu bewogen einen Wacken-Gig dafür zu recorden?

Wacken ist eine unserer Lieblings-Orte um zu spielen und wir hatten einfach ein paar gelungene Aufnahmen davon übrig.

STRATOVARIUS hatte so viele Hochs und Tiefs, ebenso wie einige LineUp-Veränderungen in der Vergangenheit. Was waren deine größten Hochs und Tiefs und wie ist die Chemie nun in der Band?

Was ich an STRATOVARIUS so liebe, ist die Tatsache, auch wenn es ein großes Kommen und Gehen in der Band gab, dass die Essenz von STRATOVARIUS einfach immer geblieben ist. Ich hatte eine großartige Zeit damals als ich mit Tolkki gearbeitet habe und ich habe auch jetzt mit diesem LineUp eine großartige Zeit. Die Atmosphäre in der Band ist heute viel, viel relaxter als damals vor gut zehn Jahren. Meine größten Hochs sind auf jeden Fall wenn wir großartige Shows spielen und die Welt bereisen. Die schlimmsten Tiefs waren die Meinungsverschiedenheiten mancher Mitglieder in vergangener Zeit.

“Eternal“ ist ein großartiges Album, es fühlt sich für mich etwas frischer an, als das auch starke „Nemesis“. Wo siehst du selbst die Unterschiede?

Wir wollten mit „Eternal“ etwas mehr straight forward gehen und die alten Power Metal-Wurzeln wieder mehr in den Vordergrund stellen. Mich würde es nicht stören, wenn wir in Zukunft ein noch mehr in Richtung Power Metal orientiertes Album machen. Aber ich mag auch diesen epischen, progressiven Song und eine Ballade mit der Mischung dabei haben.

Was waren denn die Ideen zum Titel und Artwork?

Ich wollte so eine Art alten Marmor-Tempel oder etwas in die Richtung auf dem Artwork. Die Idee kam eigenlich von einem KAYNE WEST-Backdrop, das mir extrem gefallen hat. Ich kontaktierte unseren Mann Gyula Havancsák (ANNIHILATOR, GRAVE DIGGER, DESTRUCTION), erzählte ihm von der Idee und gab ihm freie Hand zu tun, was immer er möchte. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wollten wir das Album noch „Genesis“ nennen, das war auch eine Inspiration zu diesen Welt-bezogenen Dingen, die bei den Statuen passieren. Es ist eigentlich eines meiner absoluten Lieblings-Artworks muss ich sagen. Gyula ist ein so großartiger Künstler für uns.

Gibt es neben dem Best-Of noch andere Pläne um die 30 Jahre zu feiern?

Niemand weiß wirklich wann der 30te kommt oder ob er schon war, weil es wirklich schwer ist zu sagen, ab wann man den Bandstart zählen kann. Wir feiern aber sowieso eigentlich immer. Im Herbst gibt es in Finnland eine themenbezogene Tour, das ist alles was ich im Moment weiß.

Es gibt ja einige Festivalgigs im Sommer, habt ihr noch weitere Tourneen geplant?

Nur die in Finnland, soweit ich weiß.

Was genießt du eigentlich mehr – den kreativen Prozess und die Entstehung eines Albums oder das Touren?

Ich liebe beides, aber ich arbeite eigentlich immer an neuer Musik, somit ist es auf Tour zu gehen immer noch etwas Besonders für mich.

Hey Lauri, what´s going on at the moment in STRATOVARIUS?

All good, we just finished a world tour for the "Eternal" album and released a best of compilation, now it will be a bunch of summer festivals and slowly thinking about next album or whatever will be our next move.

You recently released a new “Best-Of” to celebrate 30 years of STRATOVARIUS. How hard was it to put the songs together for this release?

Of course it is very hard to pick song from so big catalogue. Timo Kotipelto approached the collection like a concert so there should be a line of sorts followed in the songs.

What can you tell me about the new song on it – “Until The End Of Days”?

"Until The End Of Days" was basically a song that was left out of the "Eternal" sessions, somehow it didn´t seem to fit the album even we liked the song. Best-of collection gave a great opportunity to get the song out.

You also put a Live-CD on the “Best Of” package. Why did you choose the Wacken gig for a live-recording?

Wacken is one of our favourite shows to play, and we had a somewhat decent recording of the show.

STRATOVARIUS had so many highs and lows as well as many lineup-changes in the past. What are your biggest highs and lows with STRATOVARIUS and how is the chemistry now in the band?

What I love about STRATOVARIUS is the fact that even some members come and go, the essence of STRATOVARIUS is always there. I had a great time working with Tolkki back in the day, and I have a great time working with the current line-up. Chemistry is definitely much more relaxed now than what it was about 10 years ago. My biggest highs are when we get to play great shows and travel all-around the world. Biggest lows have been regarding different issues among the members back in the day.

“Eternal” is a great record and for me it sounds a little bit more fresh then the, of course als great “Nemesis”. Where do you see the differences?

We wanted "Eternal" to be a bit more straightforward album, also we had the idea of going a bit back to the Power Metal roots of the band. I wouldn´t mind doing an even more Power Metal album in the future. Although I definitely want to have the epic song with some progressive elements and a ballad in the mix as well.

What was the idea of the title and artwork of “Eternal”?

I had an idea of an old marble temple kind of thing to put on the cover. I actually came up with the idea from a Kanye West backdrop i found great looking. Anyway we contacted our cover guy Gyula Havancsák and I told him about my idea and we gave him freedom to do whatever. At the time we had the idea to call the next album "Genesis", so that has also been an inspiration to the history of the world kind of thing happening with the statues. It is one of my all time favourite covers I must say. Guile is fantastic for us.

Besides the “Best Of”, are there more plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of STRATOVARIUS?

Nobody really knows if 30th went already or is coming, as it is hard to count from when the band started. We are celebrating all the time anyways. There will be a thematic tour in Finland in the fall, thats all i know really.

You have some festival gigs planed this year, but will there be another tour this year?

Just the Finnish tour in the fall as far as I know.

What do you enjoy more – the creative process of making a new record or going on tour?

I love both, but I´m making music all the time anyways so going on the road is a very special thing for me still.
