Gitarren-Legende ZAKK WYLDE, bekannt durch sein Schaffen mit OZZY OSBOURNE und BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, ist aktuell auf Tour um sein neues Solo-Album "The Book Of Shadows" zu präsentieren. Wir trafen den sympathischen Hünen zum Gespräch in Linz kurz vor seinem Auftritt zum entspannten Gespräch.


Hey Zakk, schön dich zu treffen! Wie läuft denn die Tour bisher?


Großartig, Mann. Wir haben eine geniale Zeit.




Siehst du denn Unterschiede beim Touren durch Europa im Vergleich zu den Staaten?


Nicht wirklich. Aber wenn du mich fragst, so lange Leute zu unseren Shows kommen, bin ich zufrieden.


Und wie fühlt es sich nun an eine Solo-Tour zu spielen anstatt mit BLACK LABEL SOCIETY unterwegs zu sein?


Mit BLS würden wir mehr Metal-Zeug spielen, das ist der größte Unterschied. Auf dieser Tour haben wir mehr Akustik-Gitarren und so weiter mit.


Du hast gerade „The Book Of Shadows II“ veröffentlicht. Wieder ein komplettes Akustik-Album, wieviel Akustik bekommen wir also heute?


Yeah, es ist akustisch, aber da ist immer noch die Band und wir haben eine Hammond mit und es wird auch genug elektrisches Zeug geben, also einige Solos und anderes Gitarrenzeug.


Dein Support ist JARED JAMES NICHOLS. Ich habe von ihm zuvor noch nichts gehört. Hast du die Band selbst ausgesucht?


Ja, es ist eine großartige Power Blues Band. Jared hat eine großartige Stimme und er ist auch ein wunderbarer Gitarrist. Außerdem hat er die geniale Band. Es ist toll sie dabei zu haben und die Musik passt einfach auch perfekt zu meinem Sound.


Wie kam nun die Idee das Album nun 20 Jahre nach dem ersten Teil zu machen?


Die ganze Idee war, „Chinese Democracy“ von GUNS´N´ROSES zu schlagen, denn das Album hat 15 Jahre gebraucht. (grinst)
Als ich merkte, dass es schon 16 Jahre sind seit dem vorherigen Album, dachte ich mir, dass wir den Rekord nun schlagen könnten, doch warum sollten wir noch nicht vier weitere warten? Das wäre dann eine 20-jährige Platte. Der einzige der sowas brechen könnte, wäre jemand der so reich ist wie Richard Branson und deshalb 20 Jahre nicht arbeiten zu braucht. Worst case scenario: Wenn das Album nichts reisst, dann haben wir wenigstens diesen Rekord damit erreicht. Dieser Titel gehört jetzt uns! (lacht)




Du hast 16 Tracks auf dem Album. Sind das alles komplett neue Songs oder hattest du noch alte Sachen in der Schublade?


Es sind alles neue Songs. Ich meine, es hat nicht 20 Jahre gedauert um die Songs zu schreiben. Wir waren zwischen den beiden Alben mit BLACK LABEL SOCIETY beschäftigt, wo wir ständig Songs schreiben und Alben aufnehmen. Ich wusste, dass die Jungs in knapp sechs Wochen zu mir kommen würden, also habe ich mich hingesetzt und sechs Wochen an den Songs geschrieben – and here we go.


Auf „Sleeping Dogs!“ hast du mit Corey Taylor (SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR) zusammengearbeitet. Das war eine ziemliche Überraschung. Wie kam es dazu?


Corey und ich haben seit dem Ozzfest immer wieder darüber gesprochen, dass wir etwas gemeinsam machen wollen. Aber wegen seines verrückten Zeitplans, ich meine zwischen SLIPKNOT und STONE SOUR ist der Mann immer am Arbeiten. Aber ich dachte das wäre ein cooler Song dafür und fragte ihn ob er es irgendwo zwischen SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR, Geschirrspülen, Wäschwaschen, Weltfrieden und so weiter... und Hundescheiße wegräumen vor dem Abendessen. Aber es hat geklappt und tritt Arsch. Corey hat so eine großartige Stimme. Es ist super ihn dabei zu haben.




Wie siehst du nun auf das letzte BLACK LABEL SOCIETY Album “Catacombs Of The Black Vatican“ zurück?


Ich bin sehr glücklich damit. Eigentlich bin ich mit all meinen Alben zufrieden. Ich meine, wenn es anders wäre, hätte ich sie nicht veröffentlicht. Aber ich bin froh über das Ergebnis. Der Mix, der Sound, der Groove, es klingt so genial.


Und was tut sich gerade bei BLS? Arbeitest du schon an neuem Material?


Nach dieser Tour machen wir die European Crusade, die American Crusade und die Canadia Crusade. Also sind wir ungefähr im Dezember zurück zu Hause und im Studio um ein neues Album zu machen. Es gibt keinen Urlaub, immer Job, Job, zurück an die Arbeit.


Läuft bei dir sonst noch etwas?


Nicht wirklich. Nur touren und Wylde Audi, bei dem ich an meinen Gitarren und Amps arbeite. Also auf eine Weise, läuft jeden Tag etwas.




Wie siehst du nun auf die Zeit mit Ozzy zurück?


Großartig! Ohne den Boss würde ich wohl heute nicht hier sitzen und mir dir sprechen. Ich rede immer noch mit Ozz, ich habe in gerade erst bei der Ankündigung der Zusammenlegung vom Ozzfest meets Knotfest gesprochen, aber es ist immer großartig ihn zu treffen. Er ist Teil meiner Familie.


Denkst du, du stehst irgendwann mal wieder mit ihm auf der Bühne?


Wir machen immer noch die Ozz & Friends Geschichte und das ist immer der Wahnsinn. Wenn er mich anruft um etwas gemeinsam zu machen, dann bin ich dabei. Aber es geht ihm gut mit Gus G., der ist phänomenal. Aber falls er wieder Vollzeit etwas mit FIREWIND macht und Ozzy will, dass ich wieder dabei bin, natürlich würde ich dem Ruf folgen. Du weißt nie, was passiert.


Gibt es noch etwas was du loswerden möchtest?


Nein, nur dass meine Geschlechtsumwandlung fertig ist und alles super verheilt, also bin ich wieder voll einsatzfähig. (lacht)

Hey Zakk, nice to meet you! How is the tour going on so far?


Great, man. We are having a blast now.


Do you see differences in touring in Europa and the US?


Not really. But if you ask me, as long as people show up, I’ll be fine.


And how is it now to be on a solo-tour instead of being on tour with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY?


With BLS we would do more of the metal stuff, so that´s what it is. On this tour we have more acoustic guitars and so on.


You recently released “The Book Of Shadows II”. It´s an acoustic record again, so how much acoustic do we get tonight?


Yeah, it´s acoustic, but there is still a band and we have a Hammond and there is still some electric stuff going on with solos and other guitar-stuff.


Your supporter is JARED JAMES NICHOLS. I haven´t heard anything about him before. Did you choose him and his band by yourself for this tour?


It´s a great Power Blues band. He has a great voice and is also a great guitar player. And with him is this amazing band. It´s great to have them out here and it fetches perfect with my music.


How came the idea to do this record twenty years after “Book Of Shadows I”?


The whole thing was, to beat “Chinese Democracy” of GUNS´N´ROSES, because that took 15 years (smiles). So figuered that it was 16 years and we beat that record, so we thought let´s wait another 4 years, then it will be a 20 year record. And the only one who woul break this is someone like independently rich like Richard Branson who don´t have to work for about 20 years. Worst case scenario: if the album does nothing, we own that record, we own that title (laughs).


You have 16 tracks on this album. Are those all completly new songs or did you use some older material?


These are all new songs. I mean it didn´t take me 20 years to write these songs. In-between these records we´ve been busy with BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and we were always writing and making records. I know the guys would come in a month and a week, so i started writing for a month and a week – and here we go.


On “Sleeping Dogs” you worked with Corey Taylor (SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR). That was quite a surprise, so how came this all together?


Me and Corey where always talking since the Ozzfest we did together, that we want to do something. His schedule is insane, i mean between SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR he is working all the time. But I felt this could be a cool song and so I asked him and he could fit it in between SLIPKNOT, STONE SOUR, doing the dishes, laundry, world piece and you know... cleaning the dog´s shit of before brunch. So it worked out and kicks ass. Corey has so an amazing voice. It´s great to have him on it.


How do you look back now on your latest BLACK LABEL SOCIETY record “Catacombs Of The Black Vatican"?


I am really happy with it. Actually I´m happy with all my records. I mean otherwise you don´t put it out. Now I´m really happy how it turned out. The mix, the sound, the groove, it sounds amazing.


And what´s going on at the moment in BLS, are working on new stuff?


After this tour we are doing the European Crusade, the American Crusade and the Canadian Crusade. So we are back home in the studio in December to do another record. There is no vacation, always job, job, get back to work.


Is there something else going on?


Not really. Just touring and Wylde Audio, working my guitars, amps. So in a way everyday something is going on.


How do you look back now on the time with Ozzy?


Amazing! Without the Boss i wouldn´t sit here talking to you, man. I still talk to Ozz, I just saw him at the anouncing of the Ozzfest meets Knotfest, so it´s always great seeing him. He is part of my family.


Do you think you will share the stage some time again, like you did in 2012? Maybe for a farewell- or anniversary show?


We still do that Ozz and Friends stuff and that is always a blast. If he calls me up to ask me to do something together, I`ll be there. But he is doing great with Gus G., he is phenomenal and he is now the guitar player. If he is going back to do FIREWIND full time again and Ozzy wants me to join, of course I would answer the call. You never know what happens.


Is there anything left to say?


No, only my sex-change operation is done and already healed, I´m ready to go.
