Amalie Bruun sorgte mit ihrem Projekt MYRKUR für sehr viel Aufsehen. Mit äußerst atmosphärischem Black Metal konnte die Dänin mit dem Release der EP "Myrkur" und des Albums "M" sehr viele Fans gewinnen. Kürzlich präsentierte die Künstlerin im Zuge einer Tour mit DEAFHEAVEN ihre Musik auch live und dabei hatten wir Gelegenheit, Amalie einige Fragen zu stellen. Die Unterhaltung war äußerst nett und fand im Backstage-Bereich der Arena statt.


Hallo! Schön, dich hier in Wien zu treffen! Ich habe gelesen, dass du ein paar Tage krank gewesen bist. Wie geht es Dir jetzt?


Ja, jetzt geht es mir gut. Ich war sehr krank. Paris war am Schlimmsten, ich war fast wie am Sterben aber ich hab die Shows durchgezogen, obwohl ich so krank war. Und dann spielten wir die restlichen Shows und ich fuhr nach Hause und ging tatsächlich in die Notaufnahme, denn ich konnte nicht atmen vor lauter Husten. Ich war nicht in der Lage, zu sprechen und zu singen, also musste ich zwei Shows absagen.




Wie war die Tour für dich?

Es ist schon in Ordnung. An diesem Abend war es großartig. Ich liebte es, hier zu spielen. Wien war ein Highlight. Ich bin nicht gerne auf Tour, deshalb kann ich nicht sagen, dass es großartig ist. Ich habe eine Okay-Zeit und ich liebe es zu spielen, weil dies alles wertvoll macht, aber alles was rundherum passiert um das Spielen, ist nicht großartig, aber ich schaffe das.


Kanntest du DEAFHEAVEN vor dieser Tour?


Ja, schon. Aber nicht persönlich. Sie luden mich ein auf diese Tour zu gehen und es war eine gute Zeit mit ihnen.


Du kommst aus Dänemark, aber ich habe gelesen, dass du teilweise in den Vereinigten Staaten lebst. Ist das richtig?


Ich kehrte vor ein paar Jahren zurück. Ich wuchs in Dänemark auf und dann bin ich viel in Amerika herumgereist, und wir werden für die BEHEMOTH-Tour wieder hinfliegen. Es wird Spaß machen - hoffe ich!


Wie lange hast du schon Musik gemacht, bevor MYRKUR geboren wurde und was bedeutet dir dieser Name?


Ich habe eigentlich mein ganzes Leben lang Musik gemacht, aber ich hab auch vor MYRKUR einige Jahre professionell Musik gemacht. Ich begann vor vielen Jahren Sachen für MYRKUR aufzunehmen denke ich. Es ist etwas, das in einigen Tagen entstand. Und MYRKUR bedeutet "Dunkelheit" auf Isländisch.


Warum hast du entschieden diesen Musik-Mix zwischen Weichheit und Härte zu machen?


Weil es mich fasziniert ein Mensch zu sein. Wir haben Schattenseiten und Lichtseiten und niemand ist nur gut und niemand ist einfach nur böse. Ich bin gerne die ganze Zeit in der Natur, und nichts reflektiert das mehr als die Natur heraus. Du hast alles. Etwas kann sehr erstaunlich sein, einfach nur schön, aber auch zur gleichen Zeit sehr brutal, gefährlich sogar. Weißt du, die Natur kann dich töten. Aber das bedeutet nicht, dass sie schlecht ist und das fasziniert. Und die Musik ist ein guter Ort, um diese beiden Farbgegensätze zum Ausdruck zu bringen und es kommt mir sehr natürlich vor. Und ich denke, ich kombiniere diese beiden Seiten zu dieser Musik und es hat auf seltsame Art und Weise eine heilende Wirkung für mich persönlich.




Black Metal ist eine Männerdomäne. Warum hast du dich entschieden, diese Musik zu machen?


Nun, es war nicht eine Entscheidung, ich machte meine Folk und klassischen Lieder als Klavier-Stücke und ich begann diese mit Metal-Elementen zu mischen, und ich dachte, das wäre faszinierend und herausfordernd mit einem interessanten Touch. Ich liebe Black Metal seit vielen Jahren und es ist ein interessantes Genre. Es kann sehr intelligent sein, wirklich künstlerisch und mit viel Ausdruck, oder auch wirklich dumm. Es ist etwas, das mich fasziniert, nicht die Geschichte und das Kirchen anzünden oder solche Dinge, es war immer nur die Musik. Das passt sehr gut zu mir, es passt zu meinem Temperament.


Als deine EP "Myrkur" veröffentlicht wurde, waren viele Menschen von deiner Musik fasziniert und die meisten von ihnen haben sehr hart auf ein Album gewartet. Warst du über diese Reaktionen überrascht?


Die Sache ist die, dass ich nicht wirklich darüber so viel nachgedacht habe, weil es genau das war, was ich mache, und mir war das nicht bewusst, als ich diese EP gemacht habe, es war nur ein bisschen wie eine Demo-CD und ich dachte nicht viel darüber nach, und als sie herauskam, war es ein gelassener Prozess für mich. Ich fand damit diese Freiheit, Musik zu machen. Niemand sagte mir etwas dazu, weil niemand sie hörte und es funktionierte dadurch sehr gut für mich. Als die EP heraus kam wollte ich auf diesem Weg weitergehen und nicht daran denken, was die Leute dazu meinen, und das funktionierte für mich. Ich denke nicht darüber nach und das ist mein Wohlbefinden.


Hast du die ganze Arbeit des Songwritings alleine gemacht oder hat dir jemand geholfen?


Die EP machte ich nur mit Hilfe meines Freundes am Schlagzeug und das Album wurde von Crossover in Oslo produziert und ich hatte einige beteiligten Personen mit verschiedenen Instrumenten wie Strings und einem Horn und anderem. Ich meine, es sind alles meine Lieder und Sachen, aber viele Künstler gaben ein bisschen zur Aufnahme dazu.


Du verwendest deine Muttersprache für deine Songs. Warum?


Weil der Stil, den ich spiele, was immer es auch ist, sich wie etwas anfühlt, das ich mache, seit ich zehn Jahre alt war, und ich will dass die Musik direkt aus mir herauskommt und das was ich immer gesprochen habe ist Dänisch und ich wollte dies als eine Hommage an die Texte, nur die zu sein die ich bin. Man kann verschiedene Dinge nur in seiner eigenen Sprache sagen und meinen Fans macht das nichts aus. Ich versuche, Texte für sie zu übersetzen, wenn die Leute etwas davon wissen wollen, aber es spielt keine Rolle.




Du wirst mit BEHEMOTH auf eine große Tour durch die USA gehen! Bist du glücklich über diese große Chance und kennst du diese Jungs?


Ich kenne sie nicht persönlich. Ich bin glücklich darüber, es ist eine weitere ganz seltsame Sache, die mir passiert. Ich wundere mich nur wie das passieren kann, ich weiß es nicht. Aber jetzt ist es passiert und so mache ich es auch. Ich denke, BEHEMOTH ist großartig, eine großartige Live-Band und sie sind spielen immer noch so hart. Es ist nur eine weitere Tour für sie, aber es ist interessant, mit ihnen unterwegs zur sein und zu sehen was passiert.


Ihr werdet auch bei großen Festivals im Sommer spielen - ich werde dich wieder beim Tuska Open Air in Finnland sehen. Auf welches Festival freust du dich besonders?


Nun, ich freue mich sehr darauf am Tuska zu spielen, weil ich bisher noch nie in Finnland war. Ich bin wirklich begeistert davon. Ich denke, das Hellfest wird großartig für mich und bei solchen Gelegenheiten zu spielen. Aber bei allen von ihnen weiß ich wirklich noch nicht, was mich erwartet und welche Art von Publikum da sein wird. Das wichtigste ist, dass ich meine Band bei mir habe. Ich mag die Jungs und mit ihnen zu spielen, so dass wir offen sind für alle Arten von Festivals.


Was sind deine Pläne für die Zukunft?


Ich habe ein neues Release das bald herauskommt, für das ich in Oslo zum Vigelands Mausoleum ging, wo ich meine Vocals gemacht habe. Es ist ein Grab-Haus und es ist ein sehr großer Platz, und ich habe dort ein Konzert gegeben, bei dem ich mein Album in akustische Ruhe umgestaltet habe. Wir spielten zwei Konzerte dort und nahmen es auf. Wir werden es als eine neue Version herausbringen. Wir sind der Meinung, dass Menschen die mein Album mögen, auch das mögen.

Hello! Nice to meet you here in Vienna! I have read that you have been sick some days. How are you now?


Yes, now I´m good. I was very sick. Paris was the peak, I was like dying and I played that show, I was so sick. And then we played the remaining shows, and I went home and I went to the emergency room actually, because I couldn’t breath from cough. I was not able to speak and to sing, so I had to cancel two shows.


How was the tour for you?


It has been okay. This evening was great. I loved to play here. Vienna was a light. I don´t like to tour, so I cannot say it´s great. I´m having a okay-time and I love playing because this makes it all worthy, but everything in between the set we play is not a great, but I manage.


Did you know DEAFHEAVEN before this tour?


Yes, I did. But not personally. They invited me to go on this tour and it was a good time with them.


You come from Denmark, but I have read, that you are partially living in the United States. Is this correct?


I moved back a couple of years ago. I grew up in Denmark and then I have travelled a lot in Amerika and we will go back for BEHEMOTH-Tour. It will be fun – I hope!


All I know in Denmark is Legoland! Have you ever been there?


No, I haven´t until yet.


How long were you making music before MYRKUR was born and what means this name?


I have been making music my whole live actually but professionally I made music for many years too. I started recording stuff for MYRKUR years back I mean. It is something that became some days. And MYRKUR means “darkness” in Icelandic.


Why did you decide to make this music-mix between softness and hardness?


Because it fascinates me about being a human. We have shadow sides and light sides and no one’s just good and no one’s just evil. I like being out in nature all the time and nothing reflex that more than nature. You have everything. Something can be very stunning, just beautiful but also very brutal at the same time, dangerous even. You know, nature can kill you. But it doesn´t meant that it´s bad and it fascinates. And in music this is a good place to express those two colour opposites, and it comes very natural to me. And I think I and I combine these two sides to this music and it has in a weird way a healing for me personally.


Black Metal is a male domain. Why did you decide to make this music?


Well, it was not one decision, I was doing my folk and classical songs at piano-pieces and I started mix this with metal-elements, and I thought that was fascinating and challenging with an interesting blend. I´ve loved Black Metal for many years and it´s an interesting genre. It can be extremely intelligent, really artistic and with lots of expressions, or also really stupid. It is something that fascinated me, not the history and the church burning or such things, it was only the music. It fits me very well, it fits my temperament.


When your EP "Myrkur" was released, lots of people were fascinated by your music, and most of them were waiting very hard to a full length album. Have you been surprised about this reactions?


The thing is, that I hadn´t really thought about it so much, because it is just what I´m doing, and I purposely when I was doing the EP it was just kind of a Demo-CD and I didn´t think about it and when it came out, it was only an undisturbed process for me. I found this freedom to make music. Nobody was telling me anything, because nobody was hearing it, and then it worked very well for me. When the EP came out I wanted to continue on that road, not thinking what people are thinking of it, and that works for me. I don´t think about it and that is my health.


Did you all the work of songwriting alone or was somebody helping you?


The EP was only with help from my friend at the drums, and the album was produced by Crossover in Oslo and I had some people involved on instruments like strings and a horn, and others. I mean, it´s all my songs and stuff, but lots of artists gave a bit to the recording.


You use your native language for your songs. Why?


Because the style that I´m playing, whatever it is, feels like something that I will do when I was ten years old, and I want to have a direct music coming out of me, and that what I´m always been speaking is Danish, so I wanted this as a tribute to the lyrics, just to be who I am. You can say different things in your language and my fans don´t care. I try to translate lyrics to them, when people want to know but it doesn´t matter.


You will go on a big tour through United States with BEHEMOTH! Are you happy about this big chance and do you know these guys?


I don´t know them personally. I am happy about it, it´s another completely weird thing that´s happening to me. I´m just wondering what’s going on, I don´t know. But now it´s happening so I´m doing. I think BEHEMOTH is great, a great live-band and they are still playing so hard. It´s just another tour for them, but it´s interesting to go along with them and see what happens.


You will also play at big festivals in summer - I will see you again at Tuska Open Air in Finland. What festival are you most looking forward to?


Well, I am looking forward to play at Tuska because I have never been to Finland until yet. I´m really excited about that. I guess Hellfest is big for me, and playing things like that. But all of them really I don´t know about what they expect and what kind of audience there will be. The most important is, I have my band together, I really like the guys and to play with them, so we are open for all sorts of festivals.


What are your plans for the future?


I have a new release coming out, for which I went to the Vigelands mausoleum in Oslo where I did all my vocals in there, it´s a grave house and it´s a very great place, and I did a concert in there, where I arranged my album into acoustic in quiet. We played two concerts there and recorded it. We will send it out as a new release. We think, that people who like my album will also like this.
