James Toseland hat eine bewegende Karriere hinter sich. Vom Superbike Champ zum Rockstar war es offensichtlich nur ein kleiner Sprung. Im Vorprogramm von BLACK STONE CHERRY konnte er mit seiner schlicht TOSELAND bezeichneten Band bereits punkten. In Kürze erscheint das zweite Album "Cradle The Rage" über das wir mit James selbst sprachen.


Manche Leute wissen vielleicht, dass Rock-Musik nicht deine erste Passion war. Kannst du uns etwas über deine andere Karriere erzählen und warum du damit aufgehört hast?


Eigentlich war Rock Musik schon meine erste Liebe. Ich studierte bereits seit fünf Jahren Piano, als meine Mutter ihren neuen Freund kennenlernte, der ein Motorrad besaß. Er kaufte mir eins als ich zehn Jahre alt war zu Weihnachten und entdeckte, dass ich darin ein Naturtalent war. Ich hatte eine 18-jährige Karriere und eine großartige Zeit als Rennfahrer. Zum Glück war ich bereits auf einem brauchbaren Level auf dem Piano und hörte auch nie auf damit zu spielen. Ich liebte es immer zu spielen und entspannte mich bei all dem Druck der Rennen. Ich hatte immer ein Keyboard mit, wenn ich auf Renn-Tournee war und spielte auch gut zehn Jahre nebenbei in einer Cover-Band. Ich bin froh, dass ich meine beiden Leidenschaften ausleben konnte.




Wie bist du zu der Möglichkeit gekommen mit BLACK STONE CHERRY auf Tour zu gehen?


Wir haben diese großartige Chance bekommen, weil THEORY OF A DEADMAN unglücklicherweise in letzter Minute von der Tour abspringen mussten, und somit bekam ich einen Anruf, ob wir einspringen könnten. Ich hatte nur vier Tage um alle zu organisieren, aber das war es auf jeden Fall wert, die Shows sind großartig! BLACK STONE CHERRY und ihre Crew sind die nettesten Leute und es ist die bisher beste Tour, die wir je spielten. Außerdem war das ein perfektes Timing, da ja bald mein neues Album erscheint.


Das neue Album kommt ja bald. Was können wir davon erwarten und wo siehst du die Unterschiede zu Debüt?


Ich wollte das nehmen, was wir auf „Renegade“ richtig gemacht haben und noch mehr davon auf eine bessere Weise machen. Das erste Album war eher autobiografisch, darum wollte ich das zweite eher meinen Interessen widmen. Es gibt drei neue Bandmitglieder auf „Cradle The Rage“, darum wusste ich, dass es einen etwas anderen Drive haben könnte, als das erste Album, darum freute ich mich sehr auf die Aufnahmen. Außerdem habe ich es geschafft, Mike Fraser zu bekommen und mit ihm in Vancouver zu mixen, was dem Album noch einmal einen Energieschub gab.




Wie ist TOSELAND entstanden und wie hast du deine Mitstreiter gefunden?


Ich hatte die Band zusammengestellt nachdem ich die Songs mit Toby Jepson (THE LITTLE ANGELS) geschrieben habe. Ich checkte in ein Hotel in Scarborough in UK für acht Monate ein. Das war nur zwei Wochen nachdem ich mich so verletzte, dass ich meine Renn-Karriere beenden musste. Ich wusste sofort, dass es nun Zeit war meiner ersten Leidenschaft dieselbe Zeit und Energie zu geben, wie der Rennkarriere. Dann traf ich Zurab Melua. Ich war begeistert von seinem Spiel als ich in der Zeit traf als ich am ACM Music College in Guildford studierte. Er liebte die Songs, die ich geschrieben habe, also fragte ich ihn, ob er mein Leadgitarrist werden will. Dann bat ich ihn drei weitere großartige Musiker für die Band auf dem College zu finden. Zwar haben sich die Mitglieder über die Jahre verändert, doch das aktuelle LineUp ist großartig.


Was möchtest du mit dem Titel „Cradle The Rage“ aussagen?


In “Cradle The Rage“ geht es darum, alle frustrierenden Dinge im Leben, durch wir gehen kontrollieren zu können. Also alles, was nicht so läuft wie man es gerne hätte oder man nicht schnell genug dorthin kommt, wo man hin will. Ich wollte einen Song, den man singen kann, um all die Energie und den Frust los zu werden.


Was hast du generell für Einflüsse für deine Texte?


All meine Texte handeln von Interessen die ich in meinem Leben entdeckte. Egal ob es um das Gewinnen und Verlieren im Sport oder um all das Zeug, das die die Achterbahnfahrt der Situationen im Leben entgegenwirft geht. Ich muss über Dinge singen, die mir viel bedeuten, damit es für die Leute, die es hören auch glaubwürdig ist.





Gibt es denn schon Pläne für eine weitere Tour?


Dieses Jahr steht noch eine Headliner-Tour in UK an und wir schauen aktuell, dass wir auf so vielen Festivals wie möglich unter kommen. Wir hoffen auch noch auf ein paar weiter Support-Slots, die uns im Herbst hoffentlich wieder nach Europa bringen.


Hast du Einflüsse was deine Stimme oder den Stil deines Gesangs betrifft? Ich hörte bereits Vergleiche mit Myles Kennedy von ALTER BRIDGE. Was denkst du darüber?


Der Vergleich mit Myles Kennedy ist ein großes Kompliment. ALTER BRIDGE ist eine großartige Band und ich liebe seine Arbeit mit SLASH. Ich hörte früher viel GUNS´N ROSES und liebte auch die Stimme von Axel.




Auch wenn du deine Karriere als Rennfahrer beendet hast, nehme ich an du hast nach wie vor eine Liebe zum Motorsport...


Ich werde das Motorradfahren immer lieben, aber mir wurde schon klar, als ich meine Karriere beendete, dass meine größere Liebe das Rennfahren war. Ich denke ich war mehr wetteifernd im Sport und liebte das Fahren so sehr als hätte ich gerade erst ein Bike gestohlen und würde das erste Mal damit auf der Straße sein.

Some people might know that Rock-Music was not your first passion. Can you tell us a little bit about your other career and why you stopped that?


Rock music was actually my first love. I had studied the piano for around 5 years before my mum met a new boyfriend who had a motorcycle. He bought me one for Christmas when I was 10 years old and discovered that I had a natural talent for it. I had an 18 year career and had an amazing time as a professional racer. Luckily though I had gotten to a descent level at piano playing before I became professional and I never let the piano playing slip. In fact I loved playing even more as it relaxes me with all the pressures of the racing. I even had a keyboard in my motorhome when I was racing and played in a covers band for 10 years for fun during my career. I´m lucky that I´ve been able to do both of my passions in life.


How did you get the opportunity to play with BLACK STONE CHERRY and how is the tour going on so far?


We got this amazing opportunity because THEROY OF A DEAD MAN unfortunately had to pull out of the tour last minute and then I got a phone call to see if I could do the tour! I only had 4 days to organise everything but it´s been so worth it as the shows have been fantastic!! BLACK STONE CHERRY and all their crew are the nicest people also and it´s been one of the best tours we´ve been on so far. It came at such perfect timing just before my second album is released very soon...


Your second record will be out soon. What can we expect and what are the differences in comparison to your debut?


I wanted to take what we had got right on my debut album, "Renegade" and do more of it in a better way. My first album was quite autobiographical so for this album I wanted it to be more about my interests in life.
There are 3 new band members on "Cradle The Rage" also so I knew it would have a different sonic compared to the first album too which I was really looking forward to recording.
I also managed to get Mike Fraser to mix it in Vancouver which gives the album such a lift in energy.


How was TOSELAND born and where did you find the other guys for the band?


I formed the band once I had written all the songs with Toby Jepson (THE LITTLE ANGELS). I checked into a hotel in Scarborough in the UK for 8 months, only 2 weeks after I sustained an injury that stopped my motorcycle career. I knew instantly it was time to give my first passion of music the same time and dedication as I gave my racing career. Then I met Zurab Melua. I was amazed by his playing when I first met him and he was studying at ACM Music College in Guildford. He loved the songs I had written so I asked him to be the lead guitarist in the band. I then asked him to find 3 other great players at the college to form the band. The players have changed over the years but the line up I have now is awesome.


Your new record is called “Cradle The Rage”. What do you want to say with this title?


"Cradle The Rage" as a title is all about trying to control the frustrations of life we all go through. When things aren´t going your way or you seem to be getting no where fast. I wanted a song you could sing to release that energy and frustration.


What are your influences for your lyrics?


All my lyrics are of real interest to me that I´ve discovered in my life. Weather it be through sport winning and losing or in life´s roller coaster of situations that it throws at us. I have to sing things that mean a lot to me to make it believable to the people listening.


Are there already plans for another tour?


We have a headline UK tour booked for March 13th until March 26th and we are currently looking at as many festivals we can get in the summer. We´re also hoping for a couple of other support tours maybe in May and the Autumn which will hopefully take us out to Europe again.


Do you have influences for your style of singing and song writing? I heard people compare you with Myles Kennedy of ALTER BRIDGE. What do you think about that?


The Myles Kennedy comparison is a massive compliment. ALTER BRIDGE are an amazing band and I love his work with SLASH also.
I used to listen to a lot of GUNS`N ROSES also as I loved Axel´s voice.


Altough you ended your career as a motorcycle racer, I guess you still have a passion for bikes?


I will always love motorcycling but I realised my biggest passion for it when I had to retire was the racing. I think I was more competitive at my sport and just loved riding a bike like I had just stolen it than a massive lover of just riding a motorcycle as I never had a bike on the road.
