THE 69 EYES gehen nach 25jähriger Bandgeschichte wahrscheinlich zur Freude vieler langjähriger Fans wieder back to the roots. Und das mit ihrem alten Produzenten und viel Elan und das Resultat kann man auf der neuen Scheibe "Universal Monsters" hören. Aber was wollen sie uns damit sagen und sind sie selbst überhaupt zufrieden damit? - das erzählt uns der Kopf der Helsinki Vampires, Jyrki 69, ausführlich im Interview.


Hi! Danke, dass du dir die Zeit nimmst, um mir ein paar Fragen zu beantworten, das freut mich sehr!
Ich hatte schon die Möglichkeit, mir euer kommendes Album anzuhören – Gratuliere! Ich verfolge eure Karriere seit dem Album „Wasting The Dawn“ und ich liebe eure neuen Songs!


Danke für die netten Worte. „Wasting The Dawn“ war unser erster internationaler Relase, obwohl wir schon eine Dekade vorher zu spielen begonnen haben und es hat unseren Stil widergespiegelt, ein paar Jahre nachdem wir letztlich erfolgreich unseren eigenen Sound kreiert haben und nun sind wir wieder mit dem Produzenten Johnny Lee Michaels vereint.




Ihr habt euch dazu entschlossen wieder Back tot he Roots zu gehen, was ich sehr begrüße, da ich die Atmosphäre von euren älteren Alben wirklich gerne mag. Wie kam es zu diesem Entschluss und wie geht es euch mit den neuen Songs?


Unsere Alben „Blessed Be“ (2000) und „Paris Kills“ (2002) haben wir mit dem Produzenten Johnny Lee Michaels gestaltet, nur die Band und er. Er kam eigentlich zur Band um Keyboards zu spielen, die Songs zu arrangieren, aufzunehmen und auch zu mixen. Und genauso war es auch dieses Mal der Fall, 15 Jahre später. Wir haben die Songs geschrieben und haben begonnen gemeinsam daran zu arbeiten. Unsere Kollaboration klingt einfach danach, wir sind in keine Zeitmaschine gesprungen oder so. Ich bin der Meinung, dass es bei Weitem das beste Album ist, das wir je gemacht haben, meine Vocals sind besser als je zuvor und ich bin auch wirklich sehr aufgeregt, was die Lyrics betrifft. Wir hoffen natürlich, dass unsere Fans das Album genau so mögen.


Wie lief der Aufnahmeprozess? Ihr habt ja mit eurem ehemaligen Produzenten wieder zusammengearbeitet…


Wenn wir mit Johnny Lee Michaels zusammenarbeiten, dann liefert die Band die Musik, er geht das Ganze dann durch, fügt seine Parts hinzu und dann sehen wir, ob die Songs es wert sind, aufs Album zu kommen. Wir haben immer mehr Material als dann schlussendlich am Album landet. Zum Beispiel sind ein paar meiner Lieblings-Demos nicht aufs Album gekommen. Ich spiele die dann bei meinen Hotel-Room-Parties für Freunde, haha!


Wie kam es zum Titel „Universal Monsters“, was wollt ihr damit sagen?


THE 69 EYES sind über die Dekaden Universal Rock´n´Roll Monster geworden. Wir touren durch die Weltgeschichte und die Leute kommen um sich zu erschrecken. Unsere Welt und Geschichte ist voll von Universal Monsters. Im Rock´n´Roll gibt es heutzutage leider nur mehr wenige davon.




Gibt es einen Roten Faden auf dem Album? Um was geht’s bei den Songs?


Sie sind an gewissen Punkten wie mein Reisetagebuch oder Kalender. Das Geschriebene, das du zum Leben brauchst. Ich hatte gute Zeiten, in denen ich in der Welt herumkam und über viele Dinge nachdenken konnte.


Gibt’s eine spezielle Stimmung, die ihr mit euren Songs erzeugen möchtet?


Es ist ein Rock´n´Roll Album, hat aber auch vielleicht einen „Lebe im Hier und Jetzt“-Touch.


Welchen Song habt ihr als Single ausgewählt und plant ihr ein Video dazu?


“Jet Fighter Plane“ war die erste Single und Video und es hat hier in Finnland Airplay erreicht und ist in die DJ Charts in Deutschland eingestiegen – ein Weckruf um allen klar zu machen, dass unser Album bald veröffentlicht wird. Das dramatische Thema passt einfach aktuell, das war sehr stark. „Dolce Vita“ wird dann die nächste Single mit Video – und repräsentiert total die andere Seite des Albums.


Nach 25 Jahren des Recordens und Tourens, wo holt ihr euch noch eure Motivation?


Wir machen das für unsere Fans. Wir haben sie über die Jahre nicht abgeschreckt. Vielleicht wird es Zeit, in Zukunft mal etwas anderes zu machen, aber nun leben wir eine Weile für dieses Album.


Ihr habt euch selbst immer Helsinki Vampires genannt und mit dem Klischee des dunklen, hedonistischen, coolen und mysteriösen Typen gespielt. Findet ihr es nicht komisch, dass nun Vampire in Filmen und Büchern als glitzernde bleiche High School Kids dargestellt werden?


Ich glaube, dass die komplette Szene wieder in den Untergrund zurückgekehrt ist, als die Serie „True Blood“ im TV endete. Vampire repräsentieren Rebellen und Rocker, aber die Popularität hat die Auffassung davon etwas geändert, wie du bereits erwähntest.




Wie würdest du euren Sound für jemanden beschreiben, der euch noch nie gehört hat?


Dunkler Rock’n’Roll mit starken Melodien.


Und was sind jetzt eure Pläne für dieses Jahr? Plant ihr eine Tour?


Nachdem das Album im April erschienen ist, starten wir mit einigen Shows, aber touren nicht so viel.


Ihr habt bisher schon oft in Österreich gespielt, habt ihr euch etwas von den Städten angesehen?


Ich liebe es in Salzburg zu spielen! Das ist einer der coolsten Plätze! Mich verbindet auch viel mit Wien, weil ich da vor 13 Jahren immer wieder mal DJ in Gothic Clubs war. Darum liebe ich Wien natürlich auch!


Heutzutage ist es ja sehr populär bei Bands, politische Statements in ihren Songs zu verpacken, könnt ihr euch das für die Zukunft vorstellen oder seid ihr eher der Einstellung, dass das mit der Musik nichts zu tun hat?


Unser Song „Jet Fighter Plane! war rein zufällig fast ein politischer Song, was sehr interessant war. Es brachte mich zu einer neuen Erfahrung des Schreibens.


Was ist die seltsamste Tourgeschichte, die euch jemals wiederfahren ist?


Eigentlich jede Nacht die wir auf der Bühne mit dieser Band erscheinen. Es ist wie ein Traum, manchmal ein Alptraum, manchmal eine tolle Fantasie.

I already listened to your upcoming record. Congratulations! I follow your music since "Wasting The Dawn" and I really love the new material, sounds really great to me!


Thank you for your nice words. “Wasting The Dawn” was our first international release though we had already played a decade before that, it pretty much summoned what we were by then, some years after that we eventually succeeded in creating our sound we are still these days known with producer Johnny Lee Michaels.


You decided to go back to the roots, what I really appreciate, cause I really loved the atmosphere of your older records. So why did you decide to do this and how do you feel with the new material?


Our albums “Blessed Be” (2000) and “Paris Kills” (2002) were done together with producer Johnny Lee Michaels, just the band and him. He basically stepped in the band to play keyboards, arrange songs, record and mix them as well. So was the case now, after some 15 years later. We wrote the material and together started to work on them. Our collaboration sounds like that, we didn’t jump into a time machine or anything. I think it’s by far the best record we’ve done, my vocals are the best ever and I’m excited about my lyrics as well. We hope our fans like it as well.


How was the process of recording? You worked together again with your former producer?


When we create with Johnny Lee Michaels, the band comes up with the music and he goes them through, adds his parts and we’ll see if the songs are worth being on the album. Naturally we create more material than ends up on the record. Now for example a couple of my favorite demo songs didn’t end up the record. I play them at my hotel room parties for friends, haha!


What is the title "Universal Monsters" about? What do you wanna say with this one?


The 69 Eyes has become through these decades universal rock’n’roll monsters. We tour around and people come to see us to get scared. Our world and history is full of universal monsters. In rock’n’roll they are unfortunately getting rare these days.


Is there a global topic on this record? What are the songs about?


They are like my travel and date diary at some point. The write you need to live, I had some good times to go around the world and think of things.


Are there special kinds of feelings you want to create with your songs?


It’s a rock’n’roll record but maybe a slight touch of “Be here now” vibe!


Which song did you choose for a single track and do you plan making a video?


“Jet Fighter Plane” was the first single and video and it reached airplay here in Finland and rose to the DJ charts in Germany – just to wake up to see that we’re having a new album soon. Its theme touched this time dramatically, that was pretty powerful. “Dolce Vita” will be the next single and video – it represents totally the other end of the record.



After 25 years of recording and touring, where do you get your motivation from?


We’re doing this our fans; we’ve scared these years with them. Maybe it’s time to do something else in the future but now we’re living for this record for a while.


You were always called yourself as Helsinki Vampires and played with the cliché of the dark, hedonism, cool and mysterious type. Isn´t it weird, that Vampires in films and books nowadays are glittering pale high school Kids?


I think that whole scene returned back to underground as “True Blood” finished on TV. Vampires represented rebels and rockers at some point but popularity changed their outlook like you mentioned.


How would you describe your sound to someone who never heard your Music?


Dark rock’n’roll with strong melodies.


So what are your plans for this year? Do you plan a tour?


After the album comes out in April we start to play around, a lot of shows but not that much touring.


You often played in Austria before, did you do some sightseeing?


I loved to play in Salzburg! That’s one of the coolest places ever! I have a long history with Vienna in which I even used to DJ at the Gothic clubs one a while some 13 years ago. I still love Vienna of course too!


Nowadays it´s really popular to a lot of bands to make political statements with their songs, can you imagine doing this in future or do you think that this has nothing to do with your music and is no option?


Our “Jet Fighter Plane” was accidentally nearly a political song already, which was very interesting. It truly brought me a new aspect on writing!


What’s the strangest tour experience you ever had?


Every night rising on the stage with this band. It’s like a dream, sometimes a nightmare, sometimes a fantasy.


Is there a philosophy of life you want to share with your fans?
