Die Wahlwikinger AMON AMARTH haben mit "Jomsviking" ihr erstes Konzeptalbum am Start und preisen dieses als ambitioniertestes und atmosphärischstes Album der Bandgeschichte an. Was da dran ist, haben wir bereits im Jänner bei Gitarrist Johan Söderberg nachgefragt.



Hi Johan, ich nehme an es ist gerade eine recht aufregende Zeit für euch, denn ihr habt ein neues Album fertig. Wie geht es euch jetzt?


Wir fühlen uns großartig, jetzt wo das Album fertig ist. Wir sind sehr zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Ich bin schon ganz aufgeregt, das Material den Leuten da draussen zu präsentieren.




Wie läuft die Promo bisher? Ihr habt ja zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht einmal bekanntgegeben, dass es ein neues Album geben wird.


Eigentlich sind wir schon ziemlich spät damit dran, denn das Album kommt im März. Normalerweise starten wir sehr früh damit, aber dieses Mal wollten wir alles fertig haben, anstatt lange vorher schon etwas zu promoten, was noch überhaupt nicht fertig ist. Jetzt kommt alles auf einmal.


Ihr habt zum ersten Mal ein komplettes Konzeptalbum gemacht. Wie kam die Idee und worum geht es in „Jomsviking“?


Die „Jomsvikings“ sind eine Gruppe von Söldnern, aber die Story auf dem Album handelt nicht nur von ihnen, es ist mehr eine Background-Inspiration für die eigentliche Story. Es ist eine fiktive Geschichte, die unser Sänger Johan Hegg als Drehbuch geschrieben hat. Also ein wirklich langes Script. Als er damit fertig war, hat er es uns gezeigt und da hatten wir die Idee, ob wir es nicht zu einem Albumkonzept überarbeiten können.


Also mochtet ihr sein Drehbuch, nehme ich an?


Yeah, wir dachten es wäre eine cool Art ein Album zu schreiben, denn mit einem Konzeptalbum kann man sich schon gut vorstellen, wir der Film sein könnte. Wir haben es so gemacht, als gäbe es den Film schon und wir schreiben die Filmmusik dazu.


Was denkst du, welche Auswirkungen das Konzept auf die Musik selber hatte?


Es machte es uns viel einfacher die Musik atmosphärischer und dynamischer zu gestalten. Es gibt mehr langsame Parts und Zwischenstücke nach den Songs, so Zeug halt. Das gibt es normalerweise nicht bei uns.


Gibt es denn irgendwo mehr Details zu der Story neben den Texten?


Im Booklet wird es mehr Details dazu geben als üblich und die Texte sind mehr eine voranschreitende Story, wenn du diese liest, so kommt man sehr leicht in die Geschichte rein. Es gibt auch Pläne zu einem Comic, aber da ist noch nichts passiert.


Gibt es noch mehr Material um diese oder eine andere Story in dieser Welt fortzuführen?


Nicht wirklich. Wir haben die komplette Story genommen und die Essenz der Geschichte niedergeschireben. Und der Hauptcharakter stirbt natürlich am Ende. Es ist somit nicht für Sequels ausgelegt.




Wie findest du diese neue Erfahrung? Denkst du, ihr macht so etwas nochmal?


Schwer zu sagen. Wir versuchen immer etwas Anderes auf jedem Album zu machen. Ich bezweifle somit, dass das nächste Album wieder ein Konzept hat.


Du sagtest, ihr versucht immer etwas anders zu machen, aber ihr habt euren eigenen Sound. Ich meine, wenn du einen AMON AMARTH-Song hörst, erkennst du diesen sofort. Wie wichtig ist euch, dass man eure Songs immer schnell als einen von euch erkennt? Ist das auch um Fans nicht zu enttäuschen, die euren Sound von den ersten Tagen an liebengelernt haben?


Ich denke, das ist uns sehr wichtig. Wir mögen es, dass die Leute immer wissen, dass es ein AMON AMARTH-Song ist. Was ich meinte mit "etwas anderem auf einem anderen Album" ist, dass es wichtig ist, dass es sich für uns anders und neu anfühlt, was den Sound der Band aber nicht wirklich ändert.


Wo sucht ihr eure Inspiration für die Texte? Sind es eher Dinge wir historische Bücher und Dokumentation und so Zeug, oder nehmt ihr auch neuere Dinge wie Filme und Serien wie „Vikings“ und „The Last Kingdom“ dazu? Es sieht ja so aus, als wären die Wikinger aktuell beliebter denn je.


Die Hauptinspiration kommt natürlich aus der Geschichte. Bücher und Mythen über Wikinger sind da der Hauptfaktor. Aber wir mögen auch diese Serien wie „Vikings“. Das ist cool.




Eine große Überraschung war der Gastbeitrag von DORO. Wie kam die Idee die Metal Queen aus Deutschland einzuladen?


Das hat mit der Story zu tun. Der Hauptcharakter wird von seiner großen Liebe getrennt. Sie sollte jemand anderen heiraten. Er tötet diesen und muss fliehen. Später versucht er zurück zu ihr zu kommen. Wir fühlten, dass wir eine starke Stimme für seine Liebe brauchten, damit diese auf die richtige Weise porträtiert wird. Wir dachten da an Doro, weil sie eine sehr charakteristische und sehr nach Heavy Metal klingende Stimme hat.


Euer Drummer hat die Band vor den Aufnahmen verlassen, dann hattet ihr jemand anderes, aber der ist auch schon wieder weg. Was ist da passiert und habt ihr schon jemanden für die Tour?


Frederik hat die Band verlassen. Nach 17 Jahren fühlte er, dass er andere Wege einschlagen muss. Wir fanden einen alten Freund der Band, Tobias Gustafsson von VOMITORY um das Album aufzunehmen. Wir kennen ihn schon so gut und dachten, er wäre der beste Mann um das Album einzuspielen, aber er dachte nicht daran ein festes Mitglied mit all den Touren und so zu werden. Jetzt schauen wir nach jemandem für die Tour. Eigentlich haben wir sogar schon jemanden mit dem wir gerade proben. Wir werden sehen, ob er in die Band wächst, auch auf persönlicher Ebene.


Habt ihr schon Pläne um die Geschichte auf die Bühne zu bringen, mit einigen Props, Visuals und Schauspielern oder so?


Yeah, der Plan ist, mehr Stageprops mitzubringen und mehr Visuals zu kreieren als je zuvor, um eine bessere Atmosphäre zu bekommen. Du kannst etwas größeres als je zuvor erwarten.


Ich danke dir für das Interview. Möchtest du noch etwas loswerden?


Yeah, checkt das neue Album an, denn wir sind super sicher, dass es das beste Album ist, das wir je gemacht haben. Ich bin sicher, dass alle es genießen werden und wir können es nicht erwarten das Material live zu spielen.

Hey Johan, I guess it´s a very exciting time, because your new record is ready to be released. So how do you feel now?


We are feeling really good, now the record is finished. We are very happy with the result. I feel very excited to get out and show it to the audience.



How is the promotion going on so far? Because there is not even anything about the album released for the fans.


It´s actually pretty late, because the album will be out in late march. Normally we start a promotion very early before a release, but this time we wanted everything ready, instead of doing a long promotion before everything is done. Now everything will come at once.


For the first time you did a whole concept for a record. How came the idea and what is “Jomsviking” about?


The “Jomsvikings” is a group of mercenaries, but the story on the album is not only about them, it´s more like a background inspiration for the story. It´s a fictional story, that our vocalist Johan Hegg wrote as a movie-script. So it was a very long movie-script. When he was finished, he showed it to us and then we had the idea to rework this as a concept album.


So you like his script, I guess?


Yeah, we thought this is gonna be a cool way to write, because to write a concept album is a good way to imagine how the movie could be. We did it like the movie is already there and made the music for this movie.


What do you think what impact had this concept on the music?


It made it easier for us to make the music more atmospheric and dynamic. We have more slow parts and transitions parts in between the songs and stuff like that. That is something we usually don´t do.


Will there be more details besides the lyrics about the story somewhere to find?


The booklet gonna have more details than usually and the lyrics will be more like a continuous story, when you read them, so you can get easy into the story. And we also have plans to make a comic book, but there is nothing finished at the moment.


Is there more material, that you could maybe continue with the story or another story in this world?


Not really. We took basically the whole story and wrote down the essence of the script. And the main-charakter, of course, dies at the end. So it´s not made for sequels.


What do you think about this new experience to make a concept album. Do you think you will do that again?


It´s hard to say. We always want to try something new on each album. I doubt that the next one will be a concept album as well.


You said, you try to do something different, but you have your own sound. I mean if you hear a song of AMON AMARTH, you now after a few seconds, that it´s AMON AMARTH. How important is it for you to have this specific sound, that fans know instantly that that´s a song from you? And also, of course, not to disapoint fans who know and love you since the beginning, with experiments or different sounds.


I think that´s very important to us. We like it, that people always know that is a song from AMON AMARTH. What I mean with the difference on each album, that it´s important that it feel for us like a big difference, what not changes the sound of the band as much.


Where do you get the inspiration for your lyrics? Are these things like history books, documentations and that stuff or do you also like the new things like TV-Shows like “Vikings” or “The Last Kingdom”? It seems that Vikings are more popular than ever in TV and cinema.


The main inspiration comes off course of history. Books and mythology about Vikings. But we also like tv-shows like “Vikings” and movies about Vikings are also very cool.


A big surprise was, that DORO sang on this record. How came the idea to invite the Metal Queen of Germany?


That comes back to the story. The main character gets split up of his great love. She is forced to marry somebody else. The main character kills him and has to flee. Later in the story he comes back and tries to get her back. So we felt, we need a strong voice for his love, to portrait that in the right way. We thought about Doro, because she has a very characterful and Heavy Metal sounding voice.


Your drummer left the band before the recordings, than you had someone else, but he is out again. What happened and do you have a new guy already for the tour?


Frederik left the band. After 17 years he felt, that he have to go separate ways. Then we found a guy, who is an old friend of the band, Tobias Gustafsson from VOMITORY. We knew him very well and it felt like he would be a good man to record the album, but he didn´t thought about to be a permanent member whith touring and that stuff. And now we are looking for a guy for the tour that becomes hopefully a permanent member. Actually we are already rehearsing with someone. We will see if he growing into the band, on a personal level as well.


Do you have plans to get the story on the stage, maybe with some props, visuals or actors?


Yeah, the plan is to bring more stageprops and more visuals than before to get a better atmosphere. You can expect something bigger than before.

Yeah, check out the new album, because we are super confident that this is the best album we did. I am sure that everybody will enjoy it and we can´t wait to play it for all the fans.
