Die Finnischen Melodic Death Metaller OMNIUM GATHERUM haben mit ihrem neuesten Werk "Grey Heavens" für viel Aufsehen gesorgt. Das nahmen wir zum Anlass um der Band einige Fragen zu stellen, die uns Gitarrist Markus Vanhala und Sänger Jukka Pelkonen ausführlich beantwortet haben.


Hallo Jungs, wie geht es euch und was ist im Moment los?


Jukka: Hallo. Ich bin ok, danke dir. Wir haben aktuell mit unseren Touren begonnen um "Grey Heavens" zu promoten. Also ist alles gut.


Markus: Alles läuft gut hier und wir sind höllisch beschäftigt, was bedeutet, dass das Album ziemlich in Ordnung ist, da wir in Interviews und Promo-Material ertrinken! Ungeduldig warten wir darauf unsere Hintern wieder auf die Straße zu bringen und zu spielen, darauf liegt ja der Fokus dieser Band!




Vor einem Jahr wart ihr auf einer großen Tour mit ENSIFERUM und INSOMNIUM. Wie blickt ihr jetzt auf diese Tour zurück?


Jukka: Die Tour mit diesen Jungs war sehr gut. Beide Bands sind Profis wie wir und die Zusammenarbeit hat sehr gut geklappt. Auch die Mitglieder in den beiden genannten Bands sind nette Jungs, deshalb gab es nicht viele Streitereien oder so etwas auf dieser Tour. Die Leute schienen eine Menge von dieser Kombination zu halten, weil die Locations ziemlich überfüllt waren. Es war auch offensichtlich, dass es den Menschen ihr Geld wert war, weil das Feedback wirklich gut war. Es war eine dieser Touren, die uns weitergebracht hat, weil jeder dort mit der Haltung gearbeitet hat, die bestmögliche Tour zu machen.


Markus: Das war die ultimative -um -ium- um -ium -Tour! Ich bin sicher, dass diese Tour unsere Fangemeinde sehr stark erweitert hat, weil sich ein ganz neues Folk Metal-Publikum zwischen unseren eigenen Fans befand. Wir sind genau betrachtet nicht unbedingt eine Folk Metal-Band. Für mich waren es ziemlich harte Zeiten, weil ich im Doppel-Einsatz war im letzten Jahr, wo ich zwei Shows pro Nacht spielen musste, eine mit OMNIUM GATHERUM und eine weitere mit INSOMNIUM.


Ihr habt ein neues Album mit dem Titel "Grey Heavens" - wofür steht dieser Titel?


Jukka: "Grey Heavens" ist im Grunde Ausgewogenheit. Das bedeutet, das Gefühl der Ganzheit in einer Art und Weise, wenn man den "Punkt dazwischen" realisiert. Es geht um die Turbulenz und Ruhe. Die sich immer weiter entwickelnde Sache, die auch leise und bewegungslos sein kann. Nichts ist nur schwarz und nichts ist nur weiß. Es ist mehr so, dass sie gleichwertig sind mit allen Varianten die sie produzieren. Bei "Grey Heavens" geht es auch um die Tatsache, dass man verschiedenen Dingen und Gefühlen nicht die ganze Zeit nachjagen muss, sondern zu verstehen, dass sie in einer kreisförmigen Form vorliegen und sich dann zeigen, wenn die Umstände kurz zusammentreffen. Es geht um die Sehnsucht mit einer Gesinnung, die die Gründe für diese Sehnsucht versteht und in der Lage ist, diese Gründe zuzulassen.




Wo seht ihr die Unterschiede zu euren früheren Alben?


Jukka: "Grey Heavens" ist eine Fortsetzung zu den vorherigen Alben. Es ist die Richtung, die unsere Musik zu dieser Zeit nehmen sollte. Es ist schneller und ein bisschen aggressiver als beispielsweise "Beyond". Dennoch ist es meiner Meinung nach vollständiger als die Vorgängeralben. Es enthält die Elemente für die OMNIUM GATHERUM bekannt ist. Viele melodische schnelle Riffs, originelle Kompositionen und geschmackvolle Arrangements. "Grey Heavens" schafft es frisch zu bleiben obwohl es eingängig und komplex ist.


Markus: Wir wollten diesmal unseren Output druckvoller machen, ohne die OMNIUM GATHERUM Trademarks und Stimmung zu verlieren. Es ist ein bisschen mehr "Turbobooster-Stuff" mit mehr "in-your-face-straightforward-Stuff" zwischen den epischen OMNIUM GATHERUM-Lines. Verärgerte alte Männer tauchen in die melancholischen tiefen Gewässer. Aber es gibt keine wahre Verzweiflung ohne Hoffnung.


Was denkt ihr über Vergleiche mit AMON AMARTH (Jukka´s Stimme) und den alten IN FLAMES (die Melodien - vor allem "Skyline" erinnert mich an "Only For The Weak")?


Jukka: Zu diesen Vergleichen: es ist eine Tatsache, dass sie immer existieren, egal wie nah oder weit sie hergeholt sind. Ich persönlich kümmere mich kaum darum, weder positiv noch negativ. Die Sache ist die, dass OMNIUM GATHERUM´s Sound originell genug ist, um mit anderen Acts verglichen zu werden und wir halten stark an dieser Einzigartigkeit fest. Wir wachsen als Musiker und als Gruppe mit jedem Album, und die Musik, die wir machen entwickelt sich mit uns. Das heißt, dass wir Inspiration in erster Linie aus unseren Erfahrungen aus der Vergangenheit ziehen und der Musik die wir zuvor gemacht haben. Diese Art von Melodien zum Beispiel gab es bei OMNIUM GATHERUM in der einen oder anderen Weise schon in früheren Jahren, deshalb sind wir überzeugt von unserer Arbeit. Es bedeutet nicht, dass wir die Arbeit der anderen Bands nicht zu schätzen wissen, und es ist manchmal auch schön, einen Vergleich zu einer guten Band zu hören. Niemand kann einen rein einzigartigen Sound haben, weil niemand reine Original-Musik machen kann. Die Einflüsse sind in jeder Note vorhanden, weil wir alle sie teilen.


Markus: Ja, da gibt es nur zwölf verschiedene Noten auf der westlichen Musik-Skala, es ist an einem selbst, wie man sie mischt. Über die alte IN FLAMES "Subterranean"-EP - sie war die Basis wo alles begann, und warum wir diese Band in diesem Sommer ´96 gegründet haben...


Was könnt ihr mir über die Symbole auf dem Artwork sagen?


Jukka: Als du mich über den Titel des Albums gefragt hast, war die Antwort die ich dir gegeben habe auch eine Erklärung des Kunstwerks. Die Bilder sind von der "Grey Heavens" Balance, die in jedem existiert. Es gibt die Symbolik der Extreme und der Anblick der Balance zwischen ihnen. Die Monde stellen die Veränderung dar, die von der Kreisform ermöglicht wird. Die Skelette sind Erinnerungen an den Segen des menschlichen Daseins, das mit der Illusion des Verfalls verbunden ist. Dennoch muss ich sagen, dass jeder diese Bilder so interpretieren soll wie man will, weil die persönliche Erklärung die wichtigste ist. Wir sind in gewisser Art und Weise nur Anbieter von Bild und Ton.


Markus: Wenn man Schwarz-Weiß mischt, wird man GREY erhalten! Das ist Dualismus hey!


Welches sind die Einflüsse für eure Texte?


Jukka: Sie sind überall. Die Sache mit meinem Schreiben ist, dass es verbunden ist. Verbunden mit Texten im Album und mit den Texten auf den vorherigen Alben. Die große "Beeinflussung" ist die Tatsache, dass ich sie weiterproduziere. Es ist ein natürlicher Prozess, weil die Verbindungen unter meiner Kontrolle stehen, und das macht es möglich, dass die Texte in einer Art und Weise leben und sie weiterhin eine Geschichte erzählen - sowohl in sich selbst als auch in einem breiteren Konzept. Wie bei anderen Dingen sind Einflüsse Erlebnisse und Erlebnisse sind Einflüsse.


Das deutsche Wikipedia sagt, dass ihr Einflüsse von AT THE GATES, JUDAS PRIEST und KATATONIA habt - das klingt wie eine seltsame Mischung - würdet ihr dem zustimmen?


Markus: Als Hauptkomponist der Band kann ich auf jeden Fall sagen, dass ich diese Bands liebe, so könnte es wahr sein, dass es durch meine Musik durchscheinen. Aggression von AT THE GATES, metallische Note von JUDAS PRIEST und Melancholie von KATATONIA. Schlussendlich klingt der seltsame Vergleich gar nicht so falsch.


Ihr habt ein Video zu "Frontiers" gemacht - warum dieser Song und wie war das Shooting?


Jukka: Ja, haben wir. Der Song wurde ausgewählt, weil er auf eine gewisse Weise sehr schön die aktuelle Form unserer Musik darstellt. Es ist ein Mittelding zwischen komplex und einfach. Es ist auch durchaus eingängig auf eine geschmackvolle Art und Weise und kommt auch hart herüber. Es ist ein Song, dem man sich leicht annähern kann und auch nach oftmaligem Hören bleibt er immer noch frisch. Meiner Meinung nach war es eine ganz einfache Wahl diesen Songs für das erste Video zu nehmen.


In diesem Jahr ist euer 20. Jahrestag! Habt ihr besondere Pläne, dies zu feiern?


Markus: Es ist nur komisch für mich daran zu denken, dass wir das schon 20 verdammte Jahre machen, meiner Meinung nach sind wir noch immer eine junge Band, haha. Ich gründete die Band, als ich 14 Jahre alt war und in der achten Klasse, deshalb waren die ersten Jahre überhaupt kein professionellen Spielen, sondern nur um die Kumpels zu unterhalten. Wir haben ein Festival in unserer Heimatstadt bestätigt, wenn es seit der ersten Probe genau 20 Jahre her ist, so dass wir vielleicht doch etwas Besonderes machen müssen. Aber ich weiß noch nicht genau was. Wir haben noch ein wenig Zeit.




Wie ist es möglich, eine Band so viele Jahre am Leben zu erhalten?


Markus: Wie ich schon sagte, die ersten Jahre war es ein ziemlich dilettantisches Hobby und kein "real deal". Ich würde sagen, die "richtige Band" hat irgendwo um 2001-2002 begonnen, als wir unseren ersten richtigen Plattenvertrag beim Rage Of Achilles Label mit Sitz in Großbritannien bekamen und hatten wir unseren ersten offiziellen EP-Release mit "Steal The Light" und danach kam unser Debüt-Album "Spirits And August Light". Da kamen dann die Dinge langsam ins Laufen. Es war eine schöne Reise - ich liebe es das zu machen und solange es Spaß macht werden wir es auch machen. Es ist auch ein innerer Drang und ein Muss für mich diese Musik zu produzieren und das hält mich am Leben.


Was waren eure größten High- und Lowlights in diesen zwei Jahrzehnten?


Markus: Wir hatten unseren gerechten Anteil an Pech mit Partnern und einigen Mitgliedern auch, aber der Weg mit den Neuen zu teilen hat immer zum Besseren geführt. Vor dem "New World Shadows" Album hätte ich fast die Band bleiben lassen, weil wir einige schwierige Zeiten gehabt haben, aber wir kämpften uns durch und machten dieses Album mit einer "Fuck You All"-Mentalität und das war irgendwie unser Durchbruch.
Über Höhepunkte, von denen gibt es viele. Natürlich alle ersten Male - wie erste Demo, erster Auftritt, ersten Plattenvertrag , erstes Album, erster Auftritt im Ausland, erste richtige Europa-Tour, erste Bus-Tour, erste Japan Tour, erste Nordamerika-Tour, erster Charteinstieg usw.


Ihr werdet eine große Headliner-Tour durch Europa machen. Was sind eure Erwartungen?


Markus: Gute Zeiten und gute Shows und einigen Europäern in den Arsch treten! Es wird fantastisch werden, ein längeres Set auf europäischem Boden zu spielen.


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Markus: Mehr Shows in diesem Jahr zu spielen um den OMNIUM GATHERUM-Kult auf dem Planeten Erde zu vergrößern. In diesem Jahr werden wir noch mehr in Europa auf Tour sein, Festivals machen, durch Nordamerika touren und möglicherweise kommt auch noch mehr. Hauptziel ist es immer gute OMNIUM GATHERUM-Musik zu machen, eine gute Zeit mit den Brüdern zu haben und unseren inneren Drang zu befriedigen diese anspruchsvolle Metal-Kunst zu erzeugen. Das Ziel für den Abend nach diesem Interview ist, mich tief auf das Sofa zu hauen und ein wenig Dexter zu schauen.

Hi guys, how are you doing and what´s going on at the moment?


Jukka: Hello. I am fine thank you. We have started our touring too again promoting "Grey Heavens". So it is good.


Markus: All’s well here and busy as hell, which means album is doing pretty okay as we’re drowning to interviews and promo stuff! Eagerly waiting to get our asses back on the road and play, that’s there this band focus is!


One year ago you were on a big tour with ENSIFERUM and INSOMNIUM. How do you look back on this tour now?


Jukka: The tour with those guys was very good. Both bands are professionals like we and the cooperation worked out really well. Also the members in both mentioned bands are nice guys so there was not a lot of arguing or anything like that on that tour. People seemed to like a lot of this combination because the venues were pretty packed with metal people. I was also apparent that people got their money worth because the feedback was really good. It was one of those tours that just rolled on because everyone was there to work with an attitude that we will make the best possible tour.


Markus: That was the ultimate –um –ium- um –ium –tour! I’m sure this tour expanded our fan base a lot as we got to play for a whole new folk metal audience among our own fans. As we’re not exactly not much a folk metal band. For me it was pretty tough times as it was another double trouble tour last year where I had to play two shows per night, one with OMNIUM GATHERUM and another with INSOMNIUM.


You have a new record with the title “Grey Heavens” – what is this title about?


Jukka: “Grey Heavens” is basically about balance. This means the feeling of wholeness in a way when one realizes the "point in between". It is about turbulence and calm. The ever evolving thing that is also quiet and not moving. Nothing is just black and nothing is just white. It is more like they are equal with all the variations they produce. “Grey Heavens” is also about the fact that one does not have to chase different things and feelings all the time but to understand they exist in a circular form and appear when the circumstances are briefly in match. It is about longing with an attitude that understands the reasons for the longing and is able to let those reasons go.


Where do you see the differences to your former records?


Jukka: “Grey Heavens” is a continuity to the previous albums. It is the direction we wanted our music to take at this time. It is faster and a bit more aggressive than for example "Beyond". Still it is on my opinion more complete than the previous albums. It contains the elements OMNIUM GATHERUM is known for. A lot of melodies fast riffs and original composing and tasteful arrangements. “Grey Heavens” manages to stay fresh despite it is catchy and complex.


Markus: We wanted this time to squeeze up our output without losing the OMNIUM GATHERUM trademark and vibe. It´s a bit more turboboosted stuff with more in-your-face straightforward stuff among the Epic OMNIUM GATHERUM lines. Angry old men diving into the melancholic deep waters. But there is no true despair without hope.



What do you think about comparisons with AMON AMARTH (Jukka´s voice) and old IN FLAMES (the melodies - especially “Skyline” reminds me on “Only For The Weak”)?


Jukka: About these comparisons, the fact is that they always exist no matter how close or far they are fetched. I personally don´t care a lot about them neither positively or negatively. The thing is that OMNIUM GATHERUM´s sound is original enough to be compared to other acts and still it holds strong in uniqueness. We grow as musicians and as a group with each album and the music we make evolves as well. This means we draw inspiration firstly from our past experiences and the music we have made before. These kind of melodies for example have existed in OMNIUM GATHERUM, in a way or another, from the early years so that is why we are confident of the work we do. It doesn´t mean that we don´t appreciate the work of other groups and it is sometimes also nice to hear a comparison to a good band. Nobody can have purely unique sound because nobody can make purely original music. The influences are there in every note because we share them all.


Markus: Yeah, as there’s only 12 different notes on the western music scale, it´s up to you how you mix ’em ha. About old In Flames, ”Subterranean” EP was basically where all this started and why we built this band back in that summer of ’96…


What can you tell me about the symbols on the artwork?


Jukka: When you asked about the title of the album the answer I gave you gives some explanation of the artwork as well. The images are about the "grey heavenly" balance that exists within everyone. There are the symbolism of extremities and the sight of balance between them. The moons represent the change that is enabled by the circularity. The skeletons are reminders of the blessing of the human condition which is connected to the illusion of decay. Still I must say everyone should interpret these images like they wish because the personal explanation is the most important one. We in a way are mere providers of sound and vision.


Markus: If you mix black and white, you’ll get GREY! Its dualism hey!


What are your influences for your lyrics?


Jukka: They are all around. The thing about my writing is that it is connected. Connected with lyrics inside the album and connected to the lyrics on the previous albums. The major "influence" is the fact that I keep producing them. It is a natural process because whilst in my control the connections make it possible that the lyrics live in a way and they continue to tell a story both within themselves and in a wider concept. Like in other things influences are experiences and experiences are influences.


The German Wikipedia says you have influences from AT THE GATES, JUDAS PRIEST and KATATONIA – sounds like a weird mix – would you agree with that?


Markus: As a bands main composer I definitely can say that I love those bands, so it might be true that it’ll shine through my music. Aggression of AT THE GATES, metallic touch of JUDAS PRIEST and melancholy of KATATONIA. In the end doesn’t sound too weird comparison at all.


You shot a video for “Frontiers” – why this song and how was this shoot?


Jukka: Yes, we did. The song was chosen because in a way it represents nicely the current shape of our music. It is neatly in between the complex and simple. It is also quite catchy in a tasteful way and still it is as heavy as they come. It is a song which is easy to approach and still it remains fresh after a lot listenings. It as a natural choice for the first video song in my opinion.


This year is your 20th anniversary! Do you have any special plans to celebrate this?


Markus: It’s just weird to think I’ve been doing this already 20 fucking years, in my opinion we’re still young band haha. I formed the band when I was 14 years old and in the 8th grade, so the first years weren’t exactly professional acting at all, just messing with the dudes. We have one festival confirmed to our hometown, when it’s about exactly 20 years since the first rehearsal, so we might neeeeed to do something special. Still don´t exactly know what. We have a little time still.


How is it possible to keep a band alive for so many years?


Markus: Like I said, the first years we’re pretty much amateurish hobby and not a real deal. I would count the ”real band” to start somewhere around 2001-2002 when we got our first proper record deal with UK based Rage Of Achilles label and recorded our first official EP release ”Steal The Light” and after that our debut album ”Spirits And August Light”. That´s when things started to happen slowly by slowly. It’s been a nice ride and I love doing this, as long as this is something fun we’ll be doing this. It’s also inner urge and a-must for me to be able to produce this music and it keeps ME alive.


What were your biggest High- and Lowlights in these two decades?


Markus: We’ve had our fair share of bad luck with the partners and some members too, but the road with the new parts have always lead to the better. Before ”New World Shadows” album I almost let this band go as we had some difficult times, but we struggled thru and did this album with ”fuck you all” mentality and that album was kinda our breakthru.
About highlights, there’s plenty of them. First times usually – like first demo, first gig, first record deal, first album, first gig abroad, first real European tour, first bus tour, first Japan trip, first North American tour, first chart entry etc.


You will do a big headliner-tour through Europe. What are your expectations?


Markus: Good times and good shows and kicking some European ass! It’ll be awesome to be able to play a longer set in mainland European soil too.


What are your plans for the future?


Markus: Play more shows this year and expand the OMNIUM GATHERUM cult over the planet earth. This year we’ll be still touring Europe more, doing festivals, touring North America and possibly more coming too. Main goal is always to do good OMNIUM GATHERUM music, have a good time with the brothers and satisfy our inner urge and needs to produce this sophisticated metal art. This night goals after this interview is to hit the sofa deeply and watch some Dexter.
