Ex-KILLSWITCH ENGAGE Sänger Howard Jones wollte den Metal bereits an den Nagel hängen, doch plötzlich kommt er mit der Supergroup DEVIL YOU KNOW zurück. Die Jungs veröffentlichten kürzlich ihr zweites Album "They Bleed Red" und sammelten auf dem Weg durch Europa im Vorprogramm von FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH fleißig neue Fans. Zu all dem befragten wir den sympathischen, ruhigen Amerikaner im Interview.


Hey Howard, wie geht’s und wie läuft die Tour?


Die Tour läuft super. Ich meine… es ist halt eine riesige Tour. (lacht)




Ich glaube, das ist eine große Chance, wenn man mit FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH unterwegs ist, um neue Fans zu gewinnen.


Yeah, es macht auch richtig Spaß… und ja, uns geht’s super dabei.


Viele Shows sind ausverkauft, so wie die heutige auch…


Yeah und ich liebe das!


Dann lass uns jetzt über das neue Album reden. Es gefällt mir richtig gut. Für mich habt ihr euch im Vergleich zum Vorgänger in vielen Dingen verbessert. Was sind für dich die Unterschiede, wenn du die beiden Alben miteinander vergleichst?


Tja, bei diesem haben wir uns den Fokus besser gesetzt. Auf dem ersten Album haben wir ein paar Songs geschrieben und wir sind natürlich auch sehr glücklich damit. Aber wir haben davor noch keine Show zusammen gespielt. Wir haben das Album gemacht und erst dann miteinander Konzerte gespielt. Und dass wir dann die ganze Zeit miteinander unterwegs waren, hat uns geholfen, zu erkennen, was wir wirklich machen wollen. Zum ersten einmal, dass wir ein heavieres Album machen wollen, darauf haben wir hingearbeitet und das haben wir hoffentlich auch erreicht.




Worum geht’s im Titel „They Bleed Red“?


Ich schreibe viel über mich selbst und was ich durchmache. Über die Traurigkeit und diesen ganzen Kram. Also habe ich auf diesem Album über Menschen geschrieben, die ich kenne und die Idee zum Titel kam spontan. Die Burschen mochten den Titel auf Anhieb und darum haben wir ihn dann auch gewählt.


Meine Favoriten auf dem Album sind „Break The Tides“ und „The Way We Die“ – worum geht’s in den Songs?


Da steckt keine spezielle Story dahinter. Ich schreibe die Lyrics, während ich die Demos höre und mit meinem Hund spazieren gehe. Das geht genauso automatisch wie ich meinen raus gehe und seine Scheiße aufhebe… und dann geht mir auf einmal eine Idee durch den Kopf und ich fange an zu schreiben. (lacht)


Wie hat sich die Band überhaupt zusammengefunden? Ihr seid ja alle schon bekannte Musiker in der Metalszene und die Leute nennen solche Bands ja Supergroups, wie denkst du darüber?


Ah… Ich weiß jetzt gar nicht, was ich da jetzt sagen soll. Wir sind einfach eine Gruppe Jungs. Ja, wir haben schon ein paar Sachen in der Vergangenheit gemacht… cool… und jetzt gibt’s eben was Neues. Gestartet haben das Ganze Jon und Francesco. Sie schickten mir ein Demo und ich habe es zuerst gar nicht beachtet, weil ich dachte, dass ich so etwas nie mehr machen würde und als ich mir das anhörte beim Fischen, tat ich einfach weiter. Dann dachte ich mir, okay, das klingt nicht schlecht und blieb dran, oder was auch immer mir in diesem Moment durch den Kopf ging, dann hab ich dem Demo noch eine Chance gegeben und dann dachte ich bei mir, dass ich besser diese Jungs anrufen sollte. So ungefähr hat das Ganze angefangen.


Und wie kamt ihr auf die Idee, „Eye Of The Tiger“ zu covern?


Das war die Idee unseres Managers. diesen Coversong zu machen. Wir haben darüber geredet, welchen Song wir covern und kamen auf keinen grünen Zweig. Eines Tages fragte er uns, ob wir jetzt wüssten, welchen Song wir nehmen und zu dem Zeitpunkt hatten wir schon total darauf vergessen, darum meinte er, ob wir nicht „Eye Of The Tiger“ nehmen wollten. Und da das eine coole Idee war, einigten wir uns darauf.


Werdet ihr den Song zukünftig auch live spielen?


Keine Ahnung, mir würde es Spaß machen, aber ich weiß nicht…


Ihr habt ein Video gedreht, es scheint, als hättet ihr eine Menge Spaß dabei gehabt. Wie kam es dazu, dass ihr euch Pornostars für das Video eingeladen habt?


Das war wieder mal die Idee unseres Managers. Wir hatten da nichts damit zu tun. Es wurde sehr sehr spät gedreht. Ich glaube, wir starteten um 2 Uhr in der Nacht und werkten bis 2 Uhr am Nachmittag. Ich war an dem Tag schon richtig genervt von dem Song.




Was ist mit den Bonustracks? Ich konnte sie leider bis jetzt nicht anhören. Warum habt ihr diese Songs dafür ausgewählt und was kannst du mir darüber erzählen?


Warum nicht? Da gibt’s eigentlich nur einen Grund dafür, wir hatten ein paar Extra-Songs und packten sie als Bonustracks darauf. Es gibt noch einige mehr Songs, aber da bin ich mir sicher, dass die auch noch irgendwie zum Einsatz kommen.


Euch kam euer Gitarrist abhanden. Was ist passiert?


Nichts. Es war einfach nicht das Richtige für ihn und jetzt macht er etwas anderes. Wir wollten ihn erst mit jemanden ersetzen, den Francesco kannte, aber dann meinten wir, dass wir momentan als Quartett weitermachen wollen. Schauen wir mal, was passiert.


Wie seid ihr auf den Bandnamen gekommen?


Wir haben uns einfach gedacht, dass sich der Name cool anhört! (lacht)


Wie siehst du jetzt auf die Zeit mit KILLSWITCH ENGAGE zurück?


Großartig. Es war der Hammer. Ich vermisse sie schrecklich und habe immer noch mit allen Kontakt. Es war ja ein 3-Jahres-Zyklus. Schreiben, Aufnehmen, Tour… und ich bin total ausgebrannt dabei. Es war einfach absolut verrückt für mich an diesem Zeitpunkt. Zurückzutreten, Zeit für mich zu nehmen war einfach das Beste, das ich tun konnte.


Okay, du hast also immer noch Kontakt und hast dir auch das neue Album angehört?


Klar. Wir schreiben und so. Und Joel schickt mir immer lustiges Zeug (lacht).




Es wäre cool, wenn man euch zusammen auf Tour sehen könnte oder Specials gemeinsam auf der Bühne. Du warst ja bereits mit Jesse wegen der Roadrunner Anniversary-Geschichte gemeinsam auf der Bühne. Würdest du so was gerne wieder machen?


Wer weiß, es sind schon schlimmere Sachen passiert…


Du hast ja sicher gehört, was in Paris passiert ist. Ich möchte jetzt nicht über Religion oder Politik reden, aber viele Bands haben Shows oder sogar ganze Touren gecancelt. Habt ihr auch Bedenken?


Definitiv. Wir haben Bedenken speziell was die Performer angeht und das Publikum. Sicherheit geht vor. Ich finde, dass das eine sehr traurige Angelegenheit ist und hoffentlich nicht wieder passiert.


Habt ihr auf dieser Tour einen Stopp in Frankreich oder gar Paris?


Wir haben eine Show in Paris geplant, aber ich weiß noch nicht, ob die auch stattfindet.


Und was dürfen wir heute von euch erwarten?


Du wirst uns 40 Minuten zirka viel schwitzen sehen.


Danke, dass du dir Zeit genommen hast, möchtest du noch etwas loswerden?


Ich weiß nicht. Es ist schön zurück zu sein und nun brauche ich ziemlich dringend eine Käsekrainer!

Hey Howard, how are you doing at the moment and how is the tour going on so far?


The tour is going great. I mean ... it´s a big tour (laughs)


I guess it´s a big chance to find new fans with FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH?


Yeah, that´s always fun... and yes, we are doing great


Many shows sold out, also the this one today...


Yeah, i love that.


Let´s talk about your new album. I really have fun with this one. For me you evolved in many ways in comparison to your first record. What are the differences between these two albums for you?


Well, this one has a little bit more focus. On the first album we did a bunch of songs, and we are obviously really happy with that. But we didn´t any show together before. So we did the album and hit to road after that. But being around together all the time, we figured out what exactly we wanted to do. The first thing was, we wanted to make a heavier album, that was what we went for and hopefully we succeeded with that.


What is the title “They Bleed Red” about?


I write a lot about myself and what i went through. About the sadness and all that stuff. I wrote on this album also about people i knew and this idea came spontaneously and they guys liked the title, so we did it.


My favourites at the moment are “Break The Tides” and “The Way We Die”, what are these songs about?


There is nothing special behind it. I write lyrics just while I’m listening to the demos and walk with my dog. It´s really like waling my dog, picking up crap...and oh I got an idea and I start writing.


How actually came the band together? You are all well-known musicians in the metal scene and people call such bands supergroups, what do you think about this?


Ah... I don´t even know how to respond to that. We are just a group of guys. Yeah, we have done some things in the past...cool... and moving forward now. It was Jon and Francesco. They send me a demo and I didn´t care at first, because I thought I won´t do that ever again. Then I thought, Ok, that´s not bad and kept fishing, or whatever I did at this moment and then i gave it another try and then i thought, I better call these guys. That´s pretty much how it started.


How came the idea to do this great cover song of “Eye Of The Tiger”?


That was kind of our managers idea to do a cover song. We were talking about what song to do. We had no idea what to do. Then some day he asked us: “Have you an idea for that?” And we forgot about that and so he asked as, what we think about “Eye Of The Tiger”. And that was a cool idea, so we did it.


Do you think you will play it live in the future?


I have no idea. If it happens, I´m in, but i don´t know...


You shot a video and i guess you had much fun on this one. How came the idea to invite these pornstars for the video?


Once again that was our managers idea. We had nothing to do with it. It was really really late in the evening. I think we started at 2 in the morning und worked on it until 2 in the afternoon. I was really tired hearing this song on that day.


What about the bonus tracks? I couldn´t hear them yet, but why are these bonus tracks and what else can you tell me about it?


Why not? That´s pretty much the only reason. We had a couple of extra songs, so we added it as bonus tracks. There are more songs, but I´m sure they will come around in some way.


You lost your guitar player. What happened?


Nothing. It just wasn´t the right thing for him and he is doing some other things now. We wanted to replace him with a guy Francesco knows, but we said let´s stick as a four piece at the moment. And we will see what happens.


How came the idea for the band name?


We just thought it sounds cool. (laughs)


How do you now look back at the time with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE?


Just great. That was a blast. I miss them terribly and I still talk to them all the time. There was a time for about three years with this cycle. Write, record, tour,... and I burned out. So it was pretty insane for me at the moment. To step back, take time for me and so on was the best idea.


Ok, so you still have contact and listened to the new album...


Oh yes. We text and that stuff. And Joel always sends some funny stuff (laughs)


So it would be cool to see you together on tour or for some special things together on the stage. You already were on stage with Jesse for this Roadrunner Anniversary thing. What would you think about doing such things again?


Who knows. Stranger things have happened...


You heard what happened in Paris. I don´t want to talk about religion or politics, but many bands cancelled shows and whole tour. Do you have concerns?

Yeah, definitely. Especially for every performer and people who want to see them. Safety first. I mean it´s sad and hopefully it won´t happen again.


Will you stopp in France or Paris on this tour?


There is a show in Paris, but i don´t know if this will happen.


And what can we expect tonight?


You will see us sweat a lot for about 40 minutes or so.

I don´t know. It´s good to be back and now I need a Käsekrainer really bad!
