Anlässlich des Erscheinens ihres neuen Albums "Songs From The North I, II & III" haben sich die Melodic Death/Doom Metaller SWALLOW THE SUN auf große Europatournee begeben und dabei auch Station in Wien gemacht. Die Finnen waren zwar schon ziemlich müde, aber dennoch waren Sänger Mikko Kotamäki und Drummer Juuso Raatikainen bereit mir einige Fragen bereitwillig zu beantworten.


Hallo! Ich freue mich sehr, euch hier in Wien zu treffen!
Wie war die Tour bis jetzt?


Mikko: Oh, ziemlich hart.




Juuso: Ich bin im Moment ziemlich müde. Aber wir hatten auch mal Spaß und gute Gigs.


Mikko: Aber auch Hangovers. Es war in Ordnung, es hätten mehr Besucher sein können, aber es könnten immer mehr Besucher sein. Ist ein bisschen unheimlich.


Seid ihr Freunde von WOLFHEART und wer hat entschieden, dass Sie mit euch auf Tour gehen?


Mikko: Ich kann mich eigentlich gar nicht erinnern. Es war wahrscheinlich unser Manager, der die Entscheidung gefällt hatte. Natürlich wurde an verschiedene Bands gedacht. Aber WOLFHEART war eine gute Wahl.


Gibt es eine große Freundschaft zwischen den Bands aus Finnland oder mehr Wettbewerb?


Mikko: Natürlich immer Konkurrenz.


Juuso: Es ist wie ein höflicher Wettbewerb, aber nicht zu höflich.


Was denkt ihr, warum hat Finnland eine so große Metal-Szene?


Mikko: Das weiß ich nicht wirklich. Ich denke, das ist einfach Finnland. Ich glaube, vor einigen Jahren war die Szene viel stärker als heute. Aber Metal ist heute nicht mehr so Mainstream in Finnland wie es früher war.


Juuso: Aber irgendwo gibt es solche großen Bands wie NIGHTWISH, die größer und größer werden, fast wie ein Pop-Act, sogar das ist eine Metal-Band.


Mikko: CHILDREN OF BODOM macht es immer noch gut.


Ich war bereits acht Mal in Finnland und für mich scheint es schon eine große Szene zu sein.


Juuso: Beim Tuska-Festival? Hoffentlich werden wir dort zu spielen.


Mikko: Hoffentlich wird das Lineup in diesem Jahr besser sein. Die letzten paar Jahre war es nicht so gut.




Dieses Jahr feiert ihr 15-jähriges Jubiläum! Wie war es möglich, die Band für so viele Jahre am Leben zu erhalten?


Mikko: Das ist wirklich eine gute Frage. Ich denke, wir sind immer noch Freunde - vielleicht deshalb. Auch wenn wir einander manchmal hassen, sind wir immer noch Freunde nach 15 Jahren und ich denke, das hält die Band am Leben.


Juuso: Und die gelegentlichen Drummer-Wechsel halten die Dinge frisch.


Die meisten von euch sind auch in anderen Bands aktiv. Hat dieses gute Effekte auf SWALLOW THE SUN?


Mikko: Nein, nicht für mich. Eigentlich bin ich nicht mehr in so vielen Bands, als ich es früher war. Aber es hat keine Auswirkungen, dass ich in diesen anderen Bands bin.


Juuso: Alle Mitglieder haben ihre eigenen Nebenprojekte und das sind völlig verschiedene Dinge.


Mikko: SWALLOW THE SUN ist immer die Nummer eins.


Ist es möglich, mit Musik genug Geld zu verdienen, oder habt ihr einen Nebenjob?


Mikko: Ich denke, es ist ziemlich unmöglich. Vielleicht, wenn man mit NIGHTWISH spielt wäre es möglich.


Juuso: Oder wenn man die Top Vierzig in Cover-Bands spielt. Ich habe das getan - das macht nicht so viel Spaß. Es verbraucht all deine Zeit und du hast dann aber keine Zeit mehr, um echte Musik zu spielen.


Aber manchmal braucht man Geld, um Spaß zu haben.


Mikko: Ja, Alkohol ist sehr teuer in Finnland.


Nun zu eurem neuen Album. Warum habt ihr drei sehr unterschiedliche Alben in einem Paket veröffentlicht?


Juuso: Das kommt aus Juha Raivios Gehirn. Ich glaube, die Jungs dachten, es sei eine völlig verrückte Idee, und sie wollte es machen. Nur um tiefer in diese Art von Richtungen vorzudringen.


Mikko: Ja, es fühlt sich an wie drei verschiedene Stile, aber wir haben auch vorher schon diese verschiedenen Stile kombiniert, nur haben wir sie nicht getrennt.


Juuso: Ihr könnt all diese Sachen auch im früheren Material hören. Nun sind sie hier ausgedehnter.


Was ist die Grundidee hinter diesem Album?


Mikko: Es ist quasi eine Aussage zum heutigen Musik-Business.


Juuso: Menschen veröffentlichen ein Lied und dann gehen sie auf Tour damit, nur um einen Bezug zum Wesen des Albums herzustellen.


Mikko: Heutzutage es ist so einfach, Musik aus dem Internet zu streamen, so dass ich glaube, dass viele Menschen sich nicht mehr auf das ganze Alben konzentrieren wollen. So können sie leicht zu den Songs kommen. Also wollten wir ein echtes Album mit echten Gedanken dahinter machen. Es ist ein bisschen ein "fuck off" auf das Musik-Business heutzutage. Früher waren die Alben für die Menschen wichtiger als heute.


Juuso: Menschen nehmen sich keine Zeit mehr, um lange zuzuhören, darum müssen wir Druck machen.


Mikko: Es war also ziemlich clever 2,5 Stunden Musik zu veröffentlichen.


Wie lange habt ihr an "Songs From The North I, II & III" gearbeitet?


Mikko: Zu lang! Ich denke, Juha Raivio begann dieses Tracks schon vor zwei oder drei Jahren zu komponieren, aber eigentlich fertig waren die Songs vor einem Jahr.


Juuso: Wir haben die Demos bekommen, aber vor einem Jahr haben wir richtig mit den Aufnahmen begonnen. Wir bekamen von Juha die melodischen Ideen in Echtzeit mit Skype und wir mussten gleich danach aufnehmen.




Wie waren die Reaktionen auf dieses Album?


Mikko: Ziemlich gut so weit. Es scheint, dass es die Leute mögen. Natürlich nicht alle, aber die meisten Reaktionen waren gut.


Juuso: Es ist immer leicht, sich über die Länge zu beschweren. Immer hören wir: "Es ist zu viel", aber ich denke es ist großartig, dass die Menschen schreiben, dass es zu viel ist. Das bedeutet, dass es Zeit braucht, um es anzuhören und es kennen zu lernen.


Wie wichtig ist Finnland für eure Musik?


Mikko: Ja, es ist ein sehr dunkler Ort, so dass ich denke, es ist sehr wichtig!


Ich liebe eure Heimat!


Mikko: Ich fing an, es über die Jahre hinweg mehr und mehr zu hassen, aber ich denke, es ist einfach Finnland zu mögen, wenn man nicht dort lebt. Vor allem im zweiten Teil des neuen Albums kommt die Inspiration aus der finnischen Natur. Natürlich ist dieser Teil Finnlands ein wunderbares Land, vor allem im Sommer, aber der Winter ist sehr langweilig.


Habt ihr ein Problem mit der langen Dunkelheit im Winter?


Juuso: Kein Problem mit der Dunkelheit, aber wenn es die ganze Zeit kalt ist.


Habt ihr irgendwelche Festivals für 2016 geplant?


Mikko: Ja, wir haben einige geplant.


Juuso: Ich denke, nur das Summer Breeze ist bisher bestätigt. Aber es gibt einige unbestätigte Sachen.


Mikko: Ja, es werden mehr kommen.


Was war das größte Highlight in eurer Karriere?


Mikko: Für mich war es wahrscheinlich das, dieses Album fertig zu bekommen. Natürlich haben wir einige Live-Touren gemacht. Aber dieses Album hat so lange gedauert, hat Zeit und harte Arbeit gekostet. Wir sind wirklich stolz auf dieses Album.


Gibt es einen speziellen Ort wo ihr live spielen möchtet?


Mikko: Nord-Amerika macht immer Spaß.


Juuso: Ich möchte erneut nach Süd-Amerika oder auch an andere Orte. Ich möchte in Australien spielen - fast überall. Wäre toll, auch an mehreren exotischen Plätzen mit exotischen Menschen.


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Mikko: Nun, ich denke, so viel wie möglich touren.


Und schließlich ein paar letzte Worte an eure Fans?


Mikko: Kauft das neue Album, wenn ihr es nicht schon gekauft habt.


Juuso: Kauf es jetzt, ihr werdet nicht zu viel bezahlen dafür bezahlen - es ist wertvoll.

Hello! I´m glad to meet you here in Vienna!
How was the tour until yet?


Mikko: Oh, quite rough.


Juuso: Quite tired at the moment. But we also had fun times, good gigs.


Mikko: But hangovers. It´s been alright, could have been more people but always could be more people. Is a bit creepy.


Are you friends with WOLFHEART and who decided that you will go on tour with them?


Mikko: I couldn´t actually remember about it. It was probably our manager that the decision had done. Of course he was thinking about different bands. But WOLFHEART was a good choice.


Is there a big friendship between the bands from Finland or more competition?


Mikko: Of course always competition.


Juuso: It´s like a polite competition, but not that polite.


What do you think, why has Finland such a big metal-scene?


Mikko: I don´t really know. I think, that is Finland – it is just that in the life. I think, couple of years ago the scene was a lot more stronger than nowadays. But Metal is not so mainstream in Finland anymore than it used to be.


Juuso: But anywhere there are such huge bands like NIGHTWISH going bigger and bigger, almost like a pop-act, even this is a Metal-band.


Mikko: CHILDREN OF BODOM is still doing good.


I was 8 times in Finland, and for me is there a big scene.


Juuso: At Tuska-festival? Hopefully we will play there.


Mikko: Hopefully the lineup will be better this year. Last years it has not been so good for a couple of years.


This year you celebrate 15th anniversary! How was it possible to keep the band alive for so many years?


Mikko: That’s really good question. I guess, we are still friends – maybe that’s why. Even though sometimes we hate each other but we are still friends after 15 years and I think, this will keep the band alive.


Juuso: And the occasional drummer-change keeps things fresh.


Most of you are also active in other bands. Has this good effects to SWALLOW THE SUN?


Mikko: No, not for me. Actually I´m not in so many bands anymore, than I used to be. But it doesn´t have any effect that I have this other bands.


Juuso: All members have their own side-projects, and they are totally separate things.


Mikko: SWALLOW THE SUN is always the number one thing.


Is it possible for you to earn enough money with music or do you have a beside-job?


Mikko: I think, it´s pretty impossible. Maybe if you play in NIGHTWISH it would be possible.


Juuso: Or if you play the top forty in cover-bands. I have done that – that’s not so much fun anyway. It will consume all your time and you will not have time to play real music.


But sometimes you need money to have fun.


Mikko: Yes, alcohol is very expensive in Finland.


Now to your new album. Why did you release 3 very different albums in one package?


Juuso: That like Juhas brain. I think, all the guys thought it´s a totally crazy idea and they wanted to do it. Just to get deeper into this kind of directions.


Mikko: Yes, it tastes like three different styles, but if you combine those different styles, we have done this before, not just separate.


Juuso: You can hear this stuff in previous material. Now they are like more stretched.


What is the basic idea behind this album?


Mikko: It´s a kind of a statement to nowadays music-business.


Juuso: People release one song and then they go on tour just to get respect to album entities.


Mikko: Nowadays it´s so easy to stream music from internet, so I don´t think, people concentrate on the whole albums that much anymore. So they can easily pick up songs. So we wanted to do a real album with real thought behind. It´s a little bit “fuck off” to the music-business nowadays. Previously the albums were more important for the people than nowadays.


Juuso: People don´t take time to listen, so you must force stuff.


Mikko: So it was pretty clever to release 2,5 hours of music.


How long did you work at “Songs from the North I, II & III”?


Mikko: Too long! I think, Juha started compose this tracks already 2 or 3 years ago, but actually the songs were ready a year ago.


Juuso: We have got the demos, but a year ago we actually started the recording. Always Juha got melodic ideas in real time with skype and we had to record it right after.


What was the reactions to this album?


Mikko: Pretty good so far. It seems like people are liking it. Of course not all of them but all the other responses have been good.


Juuso: It is always easy to complain about the length. Always we hear: “It´s too much” but I think it´s great, that people write, it´s too much, that means that it takes time to listened to it and get to know it.


How important is Finland for your music?


Mikko: Well, it´s very dark place, so I guess, it´s very important!


I love your home country!


Mikko: I started to hate it more and more years, but I think, it´s easy to like Finland if you don´t live there. Especially in the second part of the new album the inspiration comes from the Finnish nature. Of course, that side of Finland is a wonderful country, especially during the summer, but winter sucks bored.


Do you have a problem with the long darkness in winter?


Juuso: It´s no problem with the darkness, but when it´s cold all the time.


Have you planned any festivals for 2016?


Mikko: Yes, we have some upcoming.


Juuso: I think, only Summer Breeze is confirmed. But there is some unconfirmed stuff.


Mikko: Yes, there is more coming.


What was the biggest highlight in your career?


Mikko: For me it has been probably to get this album done. Of course, we have done some live tours. But this album took so long time and hard work. We are really proud of this album.


Is there a special place where you want to play live?


Mikko: North-Amerika is always fun.


Juuso: I would like to go to South-America again or to other places. I would like to play in Australia – almost anywhere. Would be great, also at more exotic places for exotic people.


What are your plans for the future?


Mikko: Well, I think, tour as much as possible.


And finally some last words to your fans?


Mikko: Buy the album if you have not bought it until.


Juuso: Buy it now, you don’t pay too much for it – it´s worthy.
