Die Australische Rock Band TRACER veröffentlichten vor kurzer Zeit ihr neues Album „Water For Thirsty Dogs“ und waren gemeinsam mit APOCALYPTICA auf großer Europa-Tour. Bei ihrem Tour-Stopp in Wien hatten wir die Gelegenheit, mit Sänger und Gitarrist Michael Brown über Musik, Hunde und allerlei andere Dinge zu sprechen.


Hallo! Ich freue mich sehr über die Möglichkeit, euch einige Fragen zu stellen!
Wie war die Tour mit APOCALYPTICA bisher für euch und wie habt ihr die Möglichkeit bekommen, mit ihnen auf Tour zu gehen?



Wie wir zu dieser Tour mit ihnen gekommen sind, ist eine langweilige Geschichte, wir haben das gleiche Management. Es war so, dass sie ihr neues Album veröffentlicht haben, und fast gleichzeitig unser neues Albums auf den Markt kam. So waren wir beide auf der Suche, um zur gleichen Zeit zu touren, und so war es die perfekte Gelegenheit für beide Bands zusammen zu arbeiten. Die Tour war großartig! Am Anfang dachten wir, wir sind nur eine Rockband und unsere Genres sind so unterschiedlich, aber jetzt sind wir schon zwei Wochen mit ihnen unterwegs und haben viele Shows gespielt. Es funktioniert brillant, weil wir so unterschiedlich sind, und das Publikum genießt das, weil sie ein Ticket kaufen und zwei verschiedene Shows für den Preis von einem Ticket bekommen. Also ist es wirklich eine gute Sache und das Feedback vom Publikum war unglaublich. Wir verkauften viel Merch und Alben, und alle unsere Websites und Facebook explodieren fast, also ist es wirklich eine erfolgreiche Sache gewesen.


Was erwartet ihr von dieser Tour?

Wir hofften darauf, vor einer ganzen Menge neuer Leute zu spielen, weil wir im Februar wieder auf Tournee sind, so dass hoffentlich genug Leute beeindruckt sind und im Februar kommen um uns erneut zu sehen. Wir spielen dann ein langes Set, und es wird mehr eine TRACER-Show als jetzt sein, und sie können dann sehen, wie wir wirklich sind.


Österreich und Australien werden sehr oft verwechselt, aber sie sind so unterschiedlich. Jeder kennt Australien, aber die wenigsten Menschen kennen Österreich. Was weißt du über Österreich?

Ich weiß, dass Arnold Schwarzenegger von hier kommt, ihr macht großartige Würste und Apfelstrudel, der kommt ja von hier. Ich weiß, dass Wien eine der schönsten Städte mit großen Museen ist. Und noch wichtiger, das Publikum ist hier großartig, jedes Mal wenn wir hier in Wien gespielt haben, hatten wir eine große Resonanz, im Vergleich zu den deutschen Besuchern sie sind viel lauter und viel engagierter. Das ist genau der Weg in dem wir unsere Band präsentieren möchten, wir mögen es wenn sie ein Teil von uns sind, und das ist der Grund warum wir uns darauf freuen, im Februar wieder hierher zu kommen.
Das deutsche Publikum ist sehr höflich, sie sitzen gerne hören zu und genießen es, aber das ist nicht so angenehm für die Band.


Was denkt ihr über die lokale Rock / Metal-Szene in Australien, und ist es schwierig, dort als Rockband erfolgreich zu sein?

Es ist überall schwierig, eine erfolgreiche Rockband zu sein, da wir in Australien zu Hause sind, sehen wir natürlich viel mehr von der australischen Rockszene als von irgendwo sonst auf der Welt. Aber wenn wir nach Europa kommen, ist es leichter zu touren, weil es mehr Menschen gibt und kleinere Flächen, es ist wesentlich billiger, auf Tour zu gehen. Aber was wir herausgefunden haben ist, wenn wir hierher kommen und sagen, dass wir aus Australien sind und wir eine Rockband sind, hat das immer ein exotisches Flair, jeder will wissen, wie es sich anhört. Man hat gut zu sein, wenn man in einer Rockband ist, man muss sich den Hintern beim Proben aufreißen, bevor du hinaus gehst vor die Leute, man muss fantastisch sein, um sie dazu zu bringen "Oh mein Gott" zu sagen, damit sie zurückkommen wenn diese Band das nächste Mal spielt. Und heute Abend spielen wir mit APOCALYPTICA, sie sind ausnehmend gut, der Schlagzeuger, der Sänger den sie haben. Sie sind wirklich die besten Musiker die man sich wünschen kann. Und natürlich ist es in Australien sehr schwer. Wir haben eine Radiostation, die diktiert die Musik für jedermann, und sie spielen nicht viel Rock-Musik im Moment. Es gibt es die Top 40 und Classic Rock aber es gibt keinen großen Markt für unsere Musik. Deshalb lieben wir es, nach Europa zu kommen, vor allem nach Großbritannien. Dort spielen sie unsere Songs im Radio und das ist der Grund, warum wir immer wieder kommen.
Die Möglichkeiten hier sind sehr gut, Bands aus der ganzen Welt kommen hierher, weil Rock so beliebt ist und Bands können hier Geld auf Tour verdienen. Den Status innerhalb des Genres können wir mit diesen größeren, besseren Bands verbessern, und verwenden diese als Sprungbrett. Das ist auch genau was wir machen, deshalb sind wir mit APOCALYPTICA auf Tour, spielen vor 3.000 Menschen, was wir alleine niemals geschafft hätten, und vielleicht können wir einige Leute dazu bringen, wieder zu uns zu kommen, und sich mit uns auf die Reise zu begeben.




Ihr seid seit vielen Jahren mit TRACER aktiv. Was war der größte Gig den ihr je gespielt habt?

Um ehrlich zu sein, das war vor ein paar Tagen, als wir vor 3.000 Leuten in Prag gespielt haben. Die Band spielte ehrfürchtig, und das Publikum war wirklich episch, jeder schrie, und als wir klatschten, ging jeder mit. als wir zum Mitsingen aufgefordert haben, waren alle dabei. Es war wirklich überirdisch. Und ich muss sagen, das war die großartigste Show, die wir jemals hatten. Aber wir spielten auch schon Headliner-Shows in London, wo wir unser größtes Publikum haben, und da gab es einen Wende-Punkt, als wir damals begannen. Wir hatten noch nie eine Headliner-Show in Großbritannien gespielt, und wir waren besorgt, ob es klappen würde. Dann war es innerhalb von zwei Tagen ausverkauft, und als wir auf der Bühne standen, fühlte es sich wie ein Playback an. Es geschah, als wir eine langsame Ballade sangen, da hörte ich auf zu singen, weil die Menge lauter sang als ich. Und ich dachte daran, dass ich dieses Lied im Keller meiner Eltern geschrieben hatte, und nun war ich auf der anderen Seite der Welt und 600 Menschen sangen es mir vor. Das war unglaublich.


Was ist der Lieblingsort wo ihr gerne spielen würdet?

Weil wir noch nicht auf vielen Festivals gespielt haben, möchten wir auf allen von ihnen spielen. Toll würde Rock am Ring oder Rock im Park sein, fantastisch für unsere Band. Diese Sache hier mit APOCALYPTICA vor Tausenden zu spielen ist auch besser als das Spielen für Hunderte. Das ist, wo wir uns am komfortabelsten fühlen, aber ich hoffe, dass wir hoffentlich im nächsten Jahr auf eine der großen Bühnen kommen, damit wir der Welt wirklich zeigen können wer wir sind. Bringt uns auf eine große Bühne und wir sind glücklich.


Und jetzt zum neuen Album "Water For Thirsty Dogs" - was war die Idee hinter dem Albumtitel?

Wir waren auf Tour und waren gelangweilt und da hat uns Jett Fotos gezeigt, und da war dieser Schnappschuss mit einem Eimer, auf dem stand, dass er Wasser für durstige Hunde enthielt. Und ich dachte, das könnte so viele verschiedene Dinge bedeuten. Weißt du, es könnte bedeuten, dass junge Menschen in kaltem Wasser sterben, oder es könnte bedeuten, dass die Menschen nach neuem Rock dürsten, um die Langeweile zu vertreiben. Und dieses Wasser für durstige Hunde könnten TRACER sein. Das ist ein Grund, warum wir dieses Album so gemacht haben, wie wir es gemacht haben, wir haben versucht Dinge herauszufinden, bei denen wir uns wohl fühlen. Und ich denke, indem wir das gemacht haben, kommen wir mit einem Album, das uns auf unserem Weg vorwärts bringt in unsere gewünschte Richtung, mehr als es unsere vorherigen Alben getan haben. Es könnte etwas geworden sein, das brandneu für Rockmusik ist.


Hast du einen Hund zu Hause? Und wenn ja - was für einen?

Ja, ich habe einen großen Rottweiler, er teilt sich einen Swimmingpool mit mir (lacht).




Wo siehst du die Unterschiede im Vergleich zu "El Pistolero"?>

Für das neue Album hatten wir viel mehr Zeit für das Songwriting und das war etwas, das wir vorher nicht hatten. »El Pistolero« haben wir mit Kevin Shirley aufgenommen, der ein bekannter Produzent ist, aber wir hatten nur zwei Monate für die Vorbereitung und das Songwriting und in dieser Zeit haben wir auch einen neuen Bassisten gesucht und eine Tour vorbereitet, so dass wir nur sehr begrenzte Zeit im Studio hatten sowie ein paar Songs zu schreiben und. Aber dieses Mal hat Jett die ganze Band zusammengeholt und es war das erste Mal, dass alle drei in einem Raum zusammen gejammt haben und viele Tage lang bis in die frühen Morgenstunden gespielt haben und wir sahen, was so nach und nach entstanden ist. Und dabei stießen wir ein bisschen auf Gold und wir haben alles selbst gemacht, die Songs auf unsere Weise zusammengestellt auf eine Weise wie ein Produzent keine Pre-Production macht. Wir haben diesen Prozess selbst erledigt und das Ergebnis ist ein gut durchgeführtes Songwriting. Wir konnten Riffs schreiben und schnell aufnehmen, aber für dieses Album wollten wir nur großartige Songs, die Akkorde und die Melodien mussten perfekt dafür sein. Ich denke, das ist einer der stolzesten Momente dass wir alle Anteil am Album hatten. Sie sind nicht so dumm, wie einige andere Rock-Songs.


Wo findet ihr die Inspiration für eure Songs - gibt es einige bewusste Einflüsse oder Vorbilder?

Überall, wenn wir auf Tour sind passieren so viele Dinge, die so weit weg sind von der täglichen Realität, du findest so viele Dinge, über die man schreiben kann. Jett ist sehr belesen und gab mir ein Buch. Er wählte George Orwell`s 1984 und es war sehr beeindruckend. Es öffnete meinen Geist dahingehend, wie Technologie die Menschen überholt - mehr als sie es sollte. Und ich dachte, das wäre eine tolle Sache, darüber zu schreiben, um unseren Standpunkt deutlich zu machen, weil wir mehr und mehr den technologischen Weg gehen und vergessen, für uns selbst zu denken.


Auf dem Cover ist ein brennendes Dreieck - was war die Idee hinter diesem Artwork?

Das Dreieck ist die rudimentäre Möglichkeit uns drei von der Band zu beschreiben. Das ganze Album war nur von uns Dreien, wir haben es aufgenommen, wir haben es finanziert, wir haben alles dafür getan. Allerdings haben uns auch viele Fans mit Geld bei "Water For Thirsty Dogs" unterstützt, damit es ein Album geworden ist. Ohne sie wäre das nicht geschehen, aber es war gut um zu zeigen, wenn jeder für das gleiche Ziel arbeitet, dann könne wir drei unser Bestes geben. Ich hab auch an diesem Artwork gearbeitet und es dauerte verdammte lange.




Möchtest du mir etwas über dieses Album oder mehrere Songs darauf erzählen?

Wir sind stolz auf alle, ich denke, ein Song wie "Lazy" ist etwas, das den Prozess zeigt, den wir durchgemacht haben mit all diesen Songs. "Lazy" wurde von Jeff gestartet, indem er einige Dinge auf seinem Handy aufgenommen hat und an uns alle geschickt hat, und ich fand dazu ein akustisches Riff, das so melancholisch und bedrückend, aber wirklich interessant war. Und ich schrieb die Akkorde mit der Melodie in meinem Kopf, und ich konnte die Akkorde noch nicht, aber wir konnten die beiden zusammen bringen und es dauerte Tage, um durch verschiedene Möglichkeiten das Lied zum Wachsen zu bringen und alles zu tun was wir brauchten und wir alle waren frustriert und eines Tages kam der Schlagzeuger der Band und ließ uns seine Ideen versuchen, und es war dieser besondere Moment, bei dem wir Gott sei Dank dieses Lied fertig bekamen. Du änderst so viel und gibt so viel weg und gerade wenn du so weit bist aufzugeben, passiert es, dass du Gold findest. Und so war es auch mit all den anderen Songs.


Was sind eure Pläne nach dieser Tour?

Im Februar machen wir eine weitere Tour, so dass wir überall wiederkommen werden, wo wir auf dieser Tour waren, in der Mitte des Jahres hoffen wir, dass wir Festivals spielen können und auf großen Bühnen stehen. Und danach werden wir eine weitere Tour machen und dann geht es hoffentlich wieder ins Aufnahme-Studio um ein neues Album zu erschaffen. Busy busy!

Hello! I´m very happy to have the possibility to ask you some questions!
How was the tour with APOCALYPTICA for you until yet and how did you get the opportunity to be on tour with them?

To be on tour with them is a kind of boring story because we have the same management. It just happened that they released their new album, and we released our new album nearly at the same time, so we were both looking to tour at the same time, and so it was just the perfect time for both bands to work together. The tour has been great! At the start we were thinking we are just a rock band and our styles are so different, but having spent two weeks with them now and played a lot of shows. It´s working brilliant, because they are so different, the crowd enjoying it, because they buy one ticket and get to different shows, for the price of one ticket. So it´s really good and the response from the crowd has been amazing. We sold lots of merch and albums and all our websites and facebook are just blowing up, so it´s been really successful.


What are your expectations on this tour?


We hoped to play to a whole lot of new people, because we are coming back in February to tour again, so hopefully we impressed enough people and see them all again in February. We play a long set and it will more be a TRACER-show and they can see what we really are about.


Austria and Australia are very often confused, but they are so different. Everybody knows Australia, but most people don´t know Austria. What do you know about Austria?


I know Arnold Schwarzenegger comes from here, you make great sausage and applestrudel, this comes from here. I know that Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities, with great museums. And more important, the crowds here are great, every time we played here in Vienna, we had a great response, comparatively to the German people, they are much noisier, and like to get involved a lot more, which is the way we like to present our band, we like them to be part of it, and that´s why we are looking forward to come here again, in February.
The German crowd is very polite, they like to sit and listen and enjoy it, but it´s not so fine for the band.


What do you think about the local rock/metal scene in Australia and is it difficult to be successful as a rock band there?


It´s difficult to be a successful rock band everywhere, being at home it Australia we obviously see a lot more of the Australian rock scene than anywhere else in the world. But when we come to Europe it´s easier to tour, because it´s more people, and it´s smaller areas, it´s obviously cheaper to do it. But what we found is, when we come here and say we are from Australia and we are a rock band, it´s like an exotic taste, everybody wants to know how it sounds like. You have to be good, if you are in a rockband, you have to practice your ass off, when you get out there in front of people, you need to be awesome, you need them to say "oh my god", I come back and see this band next time they play. And tonight, we are playing with APOCALYPTICA, they are blindingly good, the drummer, the singer they got. They are all the best musicians you could ask for. And of course it´s really difficult in Australia. We have one radio station, that dictates music to everybody, and there´s not much rock music at the moment, there are Top 40 and classic rock sort of things, there´s not a big outlet for our music. That´s why we love to come to Europe, especially to the UK, they play our songs on the radio and that´s why we keep coming back.
The opportunities here are very good, bands from around the world come here, because rock is so loved and bands could make money touring here. The status within the genre, we can hook out with these bigger better bands, and use this as a stepping stone, do exactly what we are doing, that´s why we are touring with APOCALYPTICA, playing in front of 3.000 people, we couldn´t have done that on our own, and we can take some people to come back to us and take the journey with us.


You are active with TRACER since many years. What was the greatest gig you have ever played?


To be honest, a few days ago, we played to 3.000 people in Prague and the band played awesomely, and the crowd was really epic, everybody was screaming, when we did the clap-along, everybody was doing it, when we did a little sing-along, everybody was doing it, it was other-worldly. And I have to say that this was the most recently greatest show we had ever done. But we also played headline-shows in London, were we got our biggest crowd, and there was a point right back when we started. We never did a headline-show in the UK, and we were worried, how its gonna go, and it was sold out within two days, and when were on stage, we felt like a backing track. So what happened when we had a slow-ballads song, I stopped singing, because the crowd sang louder than me, and I was thinking that I wrote this song in my mum and dads basement, and now I´m on the other side of the world, and 600 people sing it back to me. That was amazing.


Which would be the favourite place you want to play?


Because we hadn’t play a lot of festivals, we would like to play at all of them, Rock am Ring or Rock im Park would be fantastic for our band, this one thing playing with APOCALYPTICA in front of thousands is rather good than playing for hundreds. That´s where we feel the most comfortable, so when we get on a big stage hopefully next year, we could show the world who we really are. Just get us on a big stage, and we are happy.


Now to your new album “Water For Thirsty Dogs” – what was the idea behind the album title?


We were on tour and we were bored and he Jett was showing us photos, and there was this one shot with a bucket, it said water for thirsty dogs on it, and I was like that could mean so many different things, you know, it could mean that young people are dying in cold water, or it could mean that people are thirsting for new rock and something to push off the boredom. and thirsty dogs on the water would be TRACER. That´s a reason we done this album the way we done it, when we were writing it, we were trying to find out things that make us feel comfortable. And I think with doing that, we come out with an album that is further down the road than our previous albums from the direction, that could become something that is brand-new for rock music.


Do you have a dog at home? And if yes – which one?


Yes, I have a big Rottweiler, he takes a swimming pool with me (laughs).


Where do you see the differences in comparison to “El Pistolero”?


For the new one we had a lot more time to write the music, which is something we didn’t have before. “El Pistolero” we recorded with Kevin Shirley, who is a famous producer, but we had only two months to prepare and write songs and at this time we also been searching for a new bass-player and doing a tour, so we had very limited time to write some songs and going to studio. But this time, Jett has been joining the band, and it was the first time that all three was get in a room, and jam and just play for days till the early hours of the morning, and we just see what happened. and in doing that we found some gold, and crafted the songs together in a way that a producer wouldn’t do a pre-production, and we took that process of ourselves and the result is well-performed songwriting. We can write riffs and record fast, but for this album we just wanted great songs, the chords and the melody had to be perfect for that, that´s one of the proudest moments I think, that we all had of the album. That was not as dumb as some of the other rock songs.


Where do you find the inspiration for your songs – are there some conscious influences or idols?


Everywhere, being on tour, there are so many things that happens, that are so removed from day to day reality, you got so many things to write about, Jett is quite well read, and gave me a book, and he picked out George Orwell`s 1984 and it was an impressing book. It opened my mind up, how technology is overtaking people more than it should, and I thought that would be a great thing to write about, to get our point across, because further and further we are going down the technological road, we forget to think for ourselves.


At the cover is a burning triangle – what was the idea behind this artwork?


The triangle is the most rudimentary way to describe the three of us in the band. The whole album was just the three of us, we recorded it, we funded it, we did all for it. However, we also used lots of fans chipping in money for help “Water For Thirsty Dogs” to become an album. Without them it wouldn´t have happened, that was to show if everybody works together for the same goal, it could make the three of us doing our best. Also I worked on the artwork and it took us fucking ages.


Do you want to tell me something about this album or several songs on it?


We are proud of all, I think a song like “Lazy” is something that shows the process we have been going through with all these songs. “Lazy” was started by Jeff recording some things on his phone and sending whole to all of us, and I picked this one acoustic riff that was so melancholic and depressing, but really interesting, and I wrote the chords with the melody in my head, and I didn’t know the chords yet, but we could marry the two together and it took us days to running through different ways to make the song grow, and do everything that we needed, and we all were getting frustrated and one day the drummer came to the band and lets us try his ideas, and it was this glory moment, thank god we got this song, you chip away and chip away and just when you´re about to give up, that´s when the gold that happens, and that´s pretty much what we had with all the songs.


What are your plans after this tour?


In February we do another tour, so we can revisit everywhere we were on this tour, in the middle of the year we are hoping that festivals will be our friend and we hope to play on big stages. And after that we doing another tour and then hopefully we are go back to recording-studio and write a new album. Busy busy!
