Die schwedischen Herren von MUSTASCH perfektionierten ihren einzigartigen Sound bereits mit "Thank You For The Demon" und konnten doch mit dem Nachfolger "Testosterone" trotz anderem Hauptsongwriter nahtlos anschließen. Wie männlich, betrunken und musikalisch die Schweden eignetlich sind fanden wir im Interview mit Gitarrist und Komponist David Johannesson sowie Bassist Mats "Stam" Johansson heraus.



Hey Jungs, wie geht es euch und wie läuft die Tour?


David: Yeah, es lief gut. Besser als das letzte Mal...

Stam: Besser denn je.




Ihr habt einige Gigs in Deutschland absolviert und jetzt geht es zurück nach Skandinavien... Was mögt ihr eigentlich mehr: den Anfang oder das Ende einer Tour?


David: Ich mag es generell auf Tour zu sein. Am Ende will ich nie nach Hause.

Stam: Ich mag es besonders in Deutschland zu touren, aber auch in Finnland. Die Crowds sind viel besser. Schweden sind immer nur einfach betrunken. (lacht).


Schade, dass ihr dieses Mal nicht nach Österreich kommt.


Stam: Ja, aber die Crowd dort ist auch immer super. Hoffentlich schaffen wir es auf der nächsten Tour wieder.


Lasst uns etwas über euer neues Album sprechen. Ich mag das neue Album wirklich sehr, aber so wie jedes Mal klingt es anders als der Vorgänger. Wo seht ihr die Unterschiede?


David: Den Unterschied sehe ich in mir. Normalerweise schrieb Ralf (Gyllenhammer) 80% und ich 20% des Albums. Dieses Mal war es genau umgekehrt.


Ja, davon habe ich bereits gehört. War das, weil sich Ralf mehr auf die Vocals konzentrieren wollte?


David: Ja und nein. Unser Produzent und ich begannen vor ein paar Jahren Songs zu schreiben, aber ich wusste dabei nicht, ob es am Ende MUSTASCH Songs oder was auch immer werden. Wir fanden das Zeug wirklich gut, also machten wir weiter. Ich meine, Ralf ist der Sänger, er schreibt die Texte und mit seiner Stimme ist es auf eine Weise immer ein MUSTASCH Song. Aber wir haben natürlich dieses Mal andere Melodien.

Stam: Es gibt einige ganz andere Melodien als auf dem letzten Album.

David: Es war so wie: „Lass und das machen! Versuchen wir mal etwas anderes."




Aber ihr habt immer noch die wichtigsten Trademarks und wie du sagtest die Stimme von Ralf. Alle Songs klingen einfach nach MUSTASCH, außer vielleicht „The Rider“. Was kannst du mir zu dem Song erzählen?


David: Tja... ich war immer Fan dieses Songs, wenn du weißt was ich meine. (lacht)
Ich habe einfach an einem Riff gearbeitet und es wurde sehr melodisch, was absolut kein MUSTASCH-Song war. Aber sie mochten es und meinten, wir sollten es versuchen. Machen wir den Song ohne Verzerrer. Dann hat unser Produzent noch das Mädel angerufen, das ein paar Vocals darauf machte. Es ist irgendwie anders geworden, aber sehr cool.


Wie kam die Idee das Thema Männlichkeit, Testosteron und so weiter für das Album auszuwählen?


Stam: Ich glaube das war unsere Managerin. Das Label wollte von uns eine Art Message. Caroline kam dann mit dieser Idee.

David: Ralf fragte sie nach einer Idee, wie wir das Album nennen könnten. Da meinte sie: „Also wenn ich über euch Jungs nachdenke, ihr mögt Autos, Bier und ihr habt so viel Testosteron in euch, also mehr als die typischen Typen. Und Ralf meinte dann sofort: „Ja, da haben wir es!“ Es ist in Schweden gerade ein großes Thema, also wahrscheinlich überall auf der Welt. Diese Sache mit der Gleichbereichtigung zwischen Mann und Frau. Aber wir sind nicht gleich – sollen es aber sein.

Stam: Das ist so scheinheilig.

David: Ein Mann zu sein... ich meine, du kannst dich betrinken, wenn du am nächsten Tag imstande bist deine Kinder abzuholen. Also für sie da sein. Du musst beide Seiten haben – stark und zäh, aber auch nett und gefühlvoll.


Was sind sonst die Einflüsse für die Texte bei Ralf?


David: Es ist sehr viel über ihn selbst. Er wurde ja adoptiert, als er noch ein Kind war. Ich denke er fühlt sich deswegen auf eine Weise betrogen. Seine Eltern haben ihn damals im Stich gelassen und er hat jetzt selber Kinder und könnte sich nie vorstellen, diese zu verlassen.

Stam: Das ist wahrscheinlich auch der Grund, warum er „Yara´s Song“ geschrieben hat. Falls du die Story nicht kennst, es geht um ein 8-jähriges Mädchen aus Gaza. Sie wurde von ihren Eltern zu einem Onkel nach Schweden geschickt um vor dem Krieg sicher zu sein, dort wurde sie von ihm aber zu Tode vergewaltigt.




Das ist eine schreckliche Geschichte. Ich wollte euch schon zu dem Song befragen, weil ihr ja gerade heute ein Video dazu veröffentlicht habt, welches doch irgendwie anders ist als sonst. Wie war es dieses Video aufzunehmen und auch das zu „Be Like A Man“?


Stam: Das waren die stärkeren Songs, dachten wir. „Be Like A Man“ war ziemlich repräsentativ für MUSTASCH. „Yaras Song“ ist ein bischen anders.
David: Ja, es ist anders, aber das macht uns nichts aus. Als wir darüber nachdachten, welchen Song wir dafür nehmen sollten, rieten uns viele Freunde dazu, weil er ihnen so gut gefiel. Das erste Video war ein typischer Drehtag. Der Regiseur zeigte uns seine Idee und ich meinte, dass es cool ist, aber ich kein Schauspieler sei. Das war neu für mich. Aber der Typ, Patric Ulleas – wir kennen ihn sehr gut und er ist einer der besten in Schweden. Er meinte: „Denk nicht darüber nach, mach einfach, was ich dir sage.“

Stam: Er wusste anfangs nicht, worum es in dem Song geht... so war seine rrste Idee eine Art Remake von „Natural Born Killers“ zu machen.

David: (lacht)

Stam: Unsere Managerin fragte ihn: „Was ist falsch mit dir? Hast du die Geschichte über dieses 8-jährige Mädchen nicht gehört?“ Dann sagte er zu ihr: „Oh mein Gott, sag es nicht den Jungs!“.


Ihr seid auf dem Artwork selbst drauf. Das habt ihr zuvor auch schon gemacht, aber was war die Idee dahinter?


David: Es war Ralfs Idee...

Stam: Er ist ein großer QUEEN Fan. Wenn du das Artwork zu „Killer“ kennst, weißt du was ich meine.




Etwas anderes... euer Drummer Jejo hat euch vor der Tour verlassen. Was ist da passiert und wen habt ihr nun mit?


David: Das ist Robban Bäck, er hat mit SABATON und vielen anderen Bands schon gespielt, er ist ziemlich berühmt in Schweden.

Stam: Jejo hat, bzw. hatte seine HipHop Band INFNITE MASS in Schweden. Die machen ein Comeback.


Sucht ihr bereits nach einem fixen Drummer?


David: Natürlich.


Was können wir also heute Abend erwarten?


David: Dass wir auf der Bühne stehen und spielen. (lacht)
Aber es ist der letzte Gig in Deutschland, der letzte mit DEVILLE, also hörte ich schon: „Sollen wir heute einen Prank machen?“ und ich habe sie so angesehen (mit einem Blick, der besagt „traut euch ja nicht“) (lacht)
Also wir werden sehen, vielleicht passiert etwas. Wir werden einfach spielen und Spaß haben.


Ich glaube das ist ja die erste Tour mit neuen Songs in der Setlist. Wie viele spielt ihr und wie kommen sie auf der Bühne an?


David: Fünf Songs und ich denke wirklich gut. Als wir das, ich nenne es immer „Das Weiße Album“ („Sounds Like Hell, Looks Like Heaven“) veröffentlichten, spielten wir das komplette Album in genau der eigentlichen Reihenfolge. Aber die Leute verstanden nicht so recht, was da abgeht, bist wir die Hit-Songs spielten. Wir wissen jetzt, dass wir Geduld haben müssen mit dem neuen Material zu Anfang. Ich denke aber dass die Leute in Deutschland damit besser umgehen können als in Schweden. Ihr hört hier mehr die Musik. In Schweden hören die Leute eher nur die Hit-Songs und überspringen das andere Zeug. Zu Hause können wir nur an Wocheneden spielen, damit die Leute betrunken werden können.


Die neuen Songs gehen aber gut ins Ohr und sind sehr catchy. Also denke ich, dass es kein Problem sein wird so viele Songs gleich nach dem Release zu spielen...




David: Yeah. Und wir wollen auch mehr Songs vom neuen Album spielen, denn wir haben ja ein neues Album draußen... also warum nicht?


Es ist ganz lustig. Als ich MUSTASCH vor ein paar Jahren für mich entdeckte, fragte ich einen Freund nach ein paar Hits von euch um reinzuhören, er sagte mir dann diesen Song und diesen Song und... dann sagte er: „Vergiss es, die haben nur Hits!“


(Allgemeines Lachen)


... also wie schwer ist es nun eine Setlist mit so vielen Hits und Klassikern zusammenzustellen?


David: Dieses Mal war es wirklich hart. Da gibt es natürlich ungefähr fünf Songs, die wir immer spielen. Unsere großen Hits in Schweden. Der Part ist einfach, aber dann ging es los mit „diesen nehmen wir rein und diesen und dieser muss auch...“ dann fiel uns auf, dass wir wieder welche rausnehmen mussten, weil wir zu viele hatten. Ich weiß gar nicht wieviele Songs wir eigentlich schon haben, denn die Band gibt es ja schon einige Zeit.

Stam: Ich weiß auch nicht, vielleicht 100? Sollten es sein...




Wie lange spielt ihr denn heute?


Stam: 80 Minuten oder so...

David: Das kommt natürlich aufs Publikum an!


Was habt ihr noch für Pläne für nächstes Jahr?


David: Wir touren jetzt noch bis Weihnachten und dann haben wir eigentlich noch keine Ahnung. Wir haben ein Endorsement mit Schecter und Blackstar, also werden wir auf die NAMM Exhibition in LA gehen. Natürlich will Live-Nation noch Tour-Zeug machen, aber da ist noch nichts fixiert.

Stam: Vielleicht kommen wir nach Süd-Europa zurück.

David: Yeah, hoffentlich bekommen wir eine Tour im März/April hin. Und natürlich warten wir auf die Festival-Saison, die Veranstalter starten im November die Suche nach Bands.

How are you doing at the moment and how is the tour going on so far?


David: Yeah, it´s been good. Better than the last time...

Stam: Better than ever!


You had a few gigs in Germany now you will go back to Scandinavia for the rest of the tour. You are quiet at the beginning of the tour now. What do you like more: The beginning or the end of it?


David: I like to tour in general. At the end of the tour I never want to go home.

Stam: I really like to tour in Germany and also Finland. More than Sweden, because they have better audiences. Swedish people are just drunk! (laughs)


But it´s sad that you not play in Austria this time.


Stam: Yes, but the crowd there is also good. I hope we will be there on the next tour.


Let´s talk a little bit about your new album. I really like this one and as every time, it sounds different then the last one. What are the main differences for you?


David: In me! Because normally Ralf wrote like 80% of the album and 20% was by me, but this time it´s the other way.


Yeah, I heard about that. Was that because Ralf wanted to concentrate more on the vocals?


David: Yes and no. Me and the producer started to do some songs a couple of years ago and we didn´t know if they are going to be MUSTASCH songs or whatever. And then we thought that stuff is cool, so we did more of them. I mean Ralf is the singer, he writes the lyrics and with his voice in some way it´s alway MUSTASCH. But we have maybe some different melodies of course.

Stam: There are a lot of differences compared to last record.

David: So it was like: “let’s do this! Just do something new.”


But you still have all the important trademarks and as you said Ralfs voice. Every song sounds obviously like MUSTASCH, but there is this one track: “The Rider”. It´s actually one of my favourites; what can you tell me about it?


David: Well I´ve always been a fan of that song, if you know what I mean (laughs). It was just like starting to write a riff and it turned out very melodic and this was absolutely not a MUSTASCH-Song. But they liked it and we said: “Let´s try it. Do that song as it is, without distortion.” And then the producer called this girl in who did some vocals on it. It turned out different, but very cool.


How came the idea to choose this topic about testosterone, manhood and that stuff?


Stam: I think it was our manager. The record company wanted us to have a message. I think Croline our manager came up with that.

David: It was like this: Ralf asked her about an idea how to call the album and she said: “Well if I think about you guys; you like cars, beers and you have so much testosterone in you, more than typical guys. And Ralf was immediately like: “Yeah, there we have it!” It´s a big thing in sweden now, I mean probably all over the world – the equality between men and women. We can´t be equal, but we have to be equal.

Stam: That´s Hypocrisy.

David: To be a man... I mean it´s ok to get drunk, as long as you are able to pick up the kids on the next day. To be there for them. You have to be both ways – strong and tough, but also nice and soulful.


What else are normally the influences for lyrics in MUSTASCH?


David: Yeah, it´s a lot of about himself. Because he was adopted, when he was a kid. So I think he feels betrayed in some way. His parents left him back then and now he has kids on his own and he never could never ever imagine to leave them.

Stam: Thats probably the reason why he wrote “Yaras Song”. If you don´t know the story, it´s about a 8 year old kid from Gaza. The parents sent her because of the war to her uncle to sweden, but they abused her to death.


Ok, that´s a horrible story. I wanted to ask you about that song, because I saw the new video today and I thought it´s quite different. How was it to shoot that video and also the one for “Be Like A Man”?


Stam: They are the stronger songs. “Be Like A Man” was the first because it was quite representative for MUSTASCH. “Yaras Song” is a little bit different.

David: Yeah, it´s different, but we don´t care, we thought about what song should we do and some friends like that song so much.

David: The first video was a regular shoot. We are just playing and they are filming us. As simple as that. And about “Yara”. The guy showed us his idea and I said: “This is a good idea, but I am not an actor. That was different for me. But the guy, Patric Ulleas – we know him and he is one of the best on this in Sweden. He said: “Don´t think about it, just do what I say.”
Stam: He didn´t actually know what was the song about... so his first idea was to do a remake of “Natural Born Killers”.

David: (laughs)

Stam: And our manger asked him, what´s wrong with you? Haven´t you heard the story about this 8 year old kid? And then he said to our manager: “Oh my god, don´t tell the guys!”


You are on the artwork this time. You did that before, but what was the idea?


David: It was Ralfs idea...

Stam: He is a big QUEEN-Fan. If you know the artwork of “Killer” you will notice that.


Another thing. Your drummer Jejo left before the tour. What happened and who is with you on this tour?


David: It´s Robban Bäck, he played with SABATON and many other bands, he is very famous in Sweden. Jejo left, because he wanted to do other stuff.

Stam: He has his HipHop band INFINITE MASS, which is quite big in Sweden. Where.. at least. But they are doing a comeback.


Are you searching for a new permanent member?


David: Yes, of course.


So, what can we expect tonight?


David: That we are on the stage and play. (laughs)
But this is the last gig in Germany and with DEVILLE, so they said: “Shout we do some prank” and I looked at them (a gaze like “don´t ever dare to”) (laughs)
So we will see, maybe something happens. We will play and have fun.


I think this is the first tour with new songs in the setlist. So how many songs do you have on the setlist and how they turned out on stage?


David: 5 Songs and I think good. When we released, i call it the “white album” (“Sounds Like Hell, Looks Like Heaven”), we played the whole record in exactly that order. And people didn´t understood what was going on until we played our hit-songs. We know now that you have to be patient with new material in the beginning. But I think the people from Germany are better than the Swedish. You´re more listen to music here. In Sweden thy listen to the Hit-Songs and skip the other stuff. In Sweden we only can play on weekends, so the people can get drunk.


The new songs are easy to get into it and are very catchy. So I think it will be no problem to play so many songs right after the release...


David: Yeah. And we want to play more songs from the new album, because we have a new record out... so why not?


It´s funny. When I discovered MUSTASCH a few years ago, I asked a friend about classics and hits to check on and he told me this song, and this song and this song... and then he said: “Nevermind, they have only hits!”


(laughter)


...so how hard is it now for you to create a setlist with so much hits and classics?


David: This time it was really tough. There are of course about five songs that we always play. These ones are big hits in sweden. This part is easy, but then we started like: “This one, and this one and this one” and then we knew that we have to take a few away again, because we had so much songs we wanted to play. I don´t even know how many songs we have, because this bands is around already for so long time.

Stam: I don´t know, maybe 100? Should be...


How much time do you have on stage today?


Stam: 80 Minutes or something like that...

David: It depends on the audience!


What are your plans for the next year?


David: We will tour now until Christmas and then actually we don´t have a clue. We are endorsed by Shecter and Blackstar, so we will go to the NAMM Exhibition in LA. Of course Live-Nation want to do some tour-stuff, but there is nothing on paper now.

Stam: Maybe we can come back to southern Europe.

David: Yeah, hopefully we will do a tour again in March or April. And we of course are waiting for the festival season, they start now in November to book bands.
