Abgesehen von ein paar Festival-Konzerten war es um die schwedischen Melodic Death Metal Veteranen DARK TRANQUILLITY etwas ruhig geworden. Die Ruhe vor dem Sturm? Wir fanden es im Gespräch mit Sänger Mikael Stanne am Summer Breeze bei einem gemütlichen Bier für euch heraus.





Hi Mikael, ihr seid zurzeit unterwegs für ein paar Shows und Festivals, ich denke, dass das viel relaxter zugeht als eine gewöhnliche Tour...


Ziemlich – yeah. Heute Morgen von zuhause weg und morgen Abend schon wieder daheim. Das ist ziemlich angenehm, ich mag das.


Es sieht so aus als ob sich aktuell nicht viel tut bei DARK TRANQUILLITY, aber ich hoffe es wirkt nur so, denn das letzte Album ist bereits mehr als zwei Jahre alt... also was passiert wirklich in DT?


Im Moment steht der Fokus darauf, die Sommershows zusammenzubringen. Aber sobald wir nach Hause kommen, werden wir wirklich anfangen an neuem Material zu arbeiten. Wir werden ein neues Album schreiben und produzieren. Darauf freuen wir uns.


Gibt es denn schon Ideen?


Da gibt es schon tonnenweise Zeug. Wir müssen nur noch herausfinden wo uns das Material hinführen wird.


Hast du denn eine Idee wann wir das Zeug erwarten können?


Ich weiß es nicht. Wir nehmen uns die Zeit dafür, denn das ist es was wir müssen. Es wird nicht einfacher ein neues Album zu schreiben. Wenn wir vier-fünf Monate oder sogar ein Jahr extra brauchen, dann nehmen wir uns diese Zeit. Aber ich denke es wird recht schnell voran gehen. Ich habe schon ein Auge auf die Lyrics und die anderen Jungs sind auch bald soweit, es wird sicher cool.




Wie ich bereits erwähnte, ist „Construct“ bereits mehr als zwei Jahre alt. Wie siehst du nun auf das Album zurück?


Wir waren für dieses Album so viel auf Tour, aber es fühlt sich immer noch neu für mich an. Ich hatte noch gar nicht Zeit davon irgendwie Abstand zu nehmen, weil wir die Songs immer noch intensiv spielen. Irgendwie ist es verrückt, denn wir haben noch nie für ein Album so viele Tourneen gespielt.


Dann lass uns noch etwas darüber sprechen. Was kannst du mir über den Titel erzählen und was waren deine Einflüsse für die Texte?


Es geht um Religion als Konstrukt, eine Idee von Menschen. Etwas, was wir, wie ich denke, vor 2000 Jahren brauchten, aber heute nicht mehr. Es geht auch um Beziehungen, um Enttäuschungen und Vertrauen. Etwas, was du über einen Menschen glauben möchtest, das wahrscheinlich aber nicht wahr ist, also geht es um die idealisierte Version von allem. Es macht es nicht wahr, aber tritt dich vielleicht in den Arsch. Das ist in etwa der Ursprung von „Construct“.

Du meintest, es fühlt sich immer noch so neu für dich an, war das auch der Grund, warum ihr kürzlich ein neues Video dazu veröffentlicht habt („White Noise / Black Silence“)?


Nein, das war nur für Niklas, der wirklich hart an solchen Dingen arbeitet. Er arbeitet ständig an visuellem Zeug. Und er hatte dieses Material, das wir wirklich cool fanden, also sagten wir; dass wir daraus ein Video machen können. Einfach...warum nicht? Für den Sommer um etwas Aufmerksamkeit auf das neue Material lenken zu können. Das war kein wirkliches Promo-Ding oder so etwas. Er wollte einfach mal wieder seine visuellen Skills zeigen. Und ich denke es sieht fantastisch aus.


Niklas hatte ja gestern Geburtstag. Wie feiert ihr denn solche Tage wenn ihr auf Tour seid?


Ja auf Tour ist es anders als gestern, es ist immer eine große Party. Aber wenn wir zu Hause sind, manche feiern ihre Geburtstage, andere mögen das eher nicht. Ich hatte die größte verdammte Geburtstagsparty aller Zeiten letztes Jahr, es war irre. Aber Niklas ist da das Gegenteil, er würde so etwas nie machen, er ist nicht der Typ dazu. Es ist eher so: danke für die Geburtstagswünsche... das reicht. Und das ist es. Aber natürlich... hatte er bereits einige Male auf Tour Geburtstag, also mache ich es ihm natürlich so unangenehm wie möglich. Ich lasse das Publikum singen und solche Sachen, wofür er mich hasst. Und ich werde es wieder tun, wann immer es passiert.


Ihr habt noch zwei Gigs in dieser Festival-Saison offen. Einen in Moskau und einen in Tokyo. Das sind natürlich ganz andere Orte als hier...


Oh ja!




Wie ist es für dieses Publikum zu spielen?


Ich liebe es in Russland zu spielen, es ist großartig. So eigenartig das Land auf die eine oder andere Weise ist, denn dort hinzukommen ist jedes Mal eine Katastrophe, aber dank den Shows vergisst du das alles schnell wieder. Das Publikum ist so fantastisch, die Fans sind großartig. Ich liebe das. Wir haben einige Tourneen in Russland gespielt und freue mich sehr darauf, da es unser erstes Festival dort ist. HELLOWEEN, eine Band mit der ich aufgewachsen bin und mich eigentlich auf die Idee brachten, Musik zu machen, spielen auch dort, es wird großartig.

Und Japan. Auch da haben wir getourt, aber nie ein Festival gespielt. Es wird also unser erstes sein und super professionell, super effizient und super fantastisch sein. Auch immer sehr, sehr cool. Die japanischen Fans sind natürlich so anders wie es nur geht, aber auf der anderen Seite enthusiastischer als die Europäer. Es ist wunderschön, das von der Bühne aus zu verfolgen.


DARK TRANQUILLITY existiert bereits seit über 25 Jahre, wenn du die Anfangszeit mit anderem Namen einbeziehst. Hast du jemals erwartet, dass es so lange gehen würde?


Natürlich nicht. Wir haben zum Spaß angefangen, einfach weil wir nichts zu tun hatten und zusammen abhängen und Musik machen wollten. Das lief für eine Zeit gut, ergab sich aber dann in Aufnahmen, das ergab sich in Tourneen und das ergab dann das erste Album. Als wir anfingen veröffentlichten viele Death Metal Bands nicht mal ihr zweites Album. Ich wusste nicht mal, dass Death Metal überhaupt eine Zukunft haben wird. Wir haben nie darüber nachgedacht und ich denke wir tun es auch heute nicht, wir haben einfach weitergemacht.


Wenn ich mich auf Interviews vorbereite, stolpere ich manchmal auch über Wikipedia, dabei kamen schon oft Dinge auf die nicht wirklich der Wahrheit entsprechen. Kennst du deine Wikipedia-Seite?


Die habe ich mir schon seit langer Zeit nicht mehr angesehen. Ich machte tonnenweise Interviews und da werde ich über „Fakten“ gefragt, bei denen ich mir oft denke: Wo zur Hölle hast du das denn her?




Da gibt es ja die Diskussion, in der du festes Mitglied von IN FLAMES gewesen sein sollst...


Das ist nicht wahr.


Wie sieht es mit anderen Projekten oder Gastbeiträgen aus? Das hast du ja in der Vergangenheit schon öfter gemacht, also können wir abseits von DARK TRANQUILLITY in Zukunft etwas von dir erwarten?


Keine Pläne im Moment. Vielleicht werde ich bei einer Band live mitmischen. Aber vor ein paar Monaten habe ich ein paar Gast-Vocals für eine Band namens MELTED SPACE gemacht. Es ist eine Art von Metal Oper mit unzähligen Sängern, die verschiedene Rollen spielen. Sehr, sehr ambitioniert. Da sind auch David Vincent (Ex-MORBID ANGEL) und Niklas von SHINING dabei. Ich habe davon gehört und wollte da einfach mitmachen.




Ich fand es relativ unüblich, dass Sänger von Death Metal Bands in so einer Oper vorkommen...


Ja, aber es ist keine typische Oper, eher ein Album im Opern-Kontext mit großem Konzept.


Wir haben ja IN FLAMES und Gast-Vocals schon kurz erwähnt. Da gibt es ja diesen verdammt alten Song „The Shadow Duet“, den du und Anders damals gemacht habt, außerdem habt ihr ja eine gemeinsame Vergangenheit, also wäre es doch naheliegend gewesen diesen Song mal zu performen oder etwas anderes Mal gemeinsam zu machen. Habt ihr jemals darüber gesprochen?


Nein, nicht wirklich. Wir haben „Shadow Duet“ anfangs live gespielt, als ich dort zu singen anfing, aber nie gemeinsam mit Anders, außer im Proberaum. Wir haben mal rumgescherzt, dass wir das vielleicht mal machen könnten, aber nie im Ernst. Es ist jetzt 15 Jahre her oder so, dass der Song live gespielt wurde. Es wäre ein Spaß, das mal zu machen, aber es ist nicht besonders hoch oben in der „To do-Liste“.


Was können wir heute von euch erwarten?


Es wird eine großartige Show. Wir haben einen neuen Bassisten mit. Anders Iwers von TIAMAT, der vor ein paar Tagen bereits mit AVATARIUM hier gespielt hat. Er ist einer unserer besten Freunde und der großartigste Mensch der Welt, was diese Shows noch besser macht. Wir haben außerdem cooles Material, das wir hier noch nicht gespielt haben, es wird also großartig. Das Summer Breeze ist eines unser Lieblingsfestivals. Sehr speziell.


Ich fürchte, wir müssen zum Ende kommen. Gibt es noch etwas zu sagen?


Ach, nur danke an alle dafür, dass wir das Jahr für Jahr machen können, das ist alles. Kommt weiter zu unseren Shows, dann kommen auch wir wieder!

Hi Mikael, you are at the moment out for some shows and festivals, so I guess it´s a more relaxed thing now than a real tour...


Pretty much - yeah. Left home this morning, will be back home by afternoon tomorrow. It´s really sweet, I like that.


It seems like it´s not going on in DARK TRANQUILLITY in the moment, but I hope it only seems so, because your last album is more than two years old... so, what’s really going on in DT?


At the moment we just focussing getting this summer shows together. But as soon as we get back we will start writing new material for real. We´re getting into writing and producing a new album. That´s what we are looking forward to.


Are there already some ideas?


There is tons of stuff. We only have to figure out where that material will take us.


What do you think, when can we expect that?


I don´t know. We gonna take our time for that, that´s what we must. It doesn´t get any easier to write a new album. So if we need an extra three-four months or a year, than that´s what we do. But I think it´s moving pretty fast. I have an eye on some lyrics and the other guys getting ready as well, so it should be cool.


As I mentioned before, “Construct” is now more than two years hold. How do you look back on it now?


We´ve been touring so much for this album, but it still feels new to me. I haven´t had time to kind of relax from it, because we´re still playing these new songs. It´s been kind of crazy, because we toured more for this album than any other.


So let us talk a little bit about it. What can you tell me about the title and your influences for the lyrics?


It´s about religion as a construct, as an idea that it is something that is man-made. Something, I guess we needed 2000 years ago, but we don´t need now anymore. It´s also about relationships, about disappointment and trust. The things you want to believe about one, that´s maybe not true, so it’s about a kind of this idealised version of everything. The way you should choose to view it, just because it´s easier for you. It doesn´t make it true, but it will you kick in the ass eventually. That was kind of the genesis of “Construct”.


You said that it still feels new to you, was this also the reason you recently released a new video for it (“White Noise / Black Silence”)?


No, that was just something for Niklas, who is been working really hard. He is constantly working on visual stuff. And he had this material which was really cool, so we said; we can make a video out of it. Just...why not? For the summer to get some new eyeballs on some of our material. It´s not a promotional thing of anything of that. It just for him to show off his visual skills. And I think it looks fantastic.


Niklas had his birthday yesterday. How do you celebrate birthdays on tours normally?


Yeah on tour it´s different then yesterday, it´s a big party. But if we are at home, some people celebrate their birthday, some people don´t like to do that. I had the biggest fucking birthday of all time last year, it was ridiculous. But Niklas is the opposite of that, he would never do anything of that, he is not the kind of guy. It´s more; thank you for the birthdaywishes... fine. And that´s it. But of course... it has been his birthday a couple of time on stage, so of course I make him super uncomfortable. I let the audience sing for him and that stuff and he hates me for it. And I will do it again, whenever it happens.


You have two gigs left on this festival season. One in Moscow and one in Tokyo. So these are two really different locations than this one here...


Oh yes!


How is it for you to play for these audiences?


I love to play in Russia, it´s awesome. As much this country is strange in many ways, then getting there is a pain in the ass, but the shows a so great, that you forget all about that. The crowd is fantastic, the fans are amazing. I really love that. We´ve done many tours in Russia and look really forward to it, because it´s also our first festival show there. HELLOWEEN, a band I grew up with and brought me to the idea to make music, will also be there, so it´s really great.

And then Japan. We did tours, but also never a festival. So it´s our first there and it´s gonna be super professional, super efficent, super fantastic then. Also always really, really cool. The Japanese fans are of course as different as it can get, but in the same time they are more passionate as Europeans. It so beautiful to see that from the stage.


DARK TRANQUILLITY exists now more than 25 years if you include the beginnings with another name and so on. Did you ever expect that it will last this long?


Of course not. We started out for fun, just because we had nothing to do and wanted to hang out and make music. That was good for a while and that turned into recordings, that turned into a tour, that turned into an album. When we started, a lot of Death Metal bands didn´t even release a second album. I didn´t know that there was gonna be a future in Death Metal at all. We never thought about it, we just kept going, and I think we still do it.


When I prepare myself for interviews, sometimes I also stumble over Wikipedia, but I found out that many things on it are not really true – do you know your Wiki-Page?


I haven´t checked in a long time. I do tons of interviews and people ask me about “facts” and I think; where the fuck did you get that from?


There is this discussion going on that you were a permanent member of IN FLAMES in the beginning...


That´s not true.


What about other projects or guest-vocal things? You did that in the past, so can we expect some other stuff than DARK TRANQUILLITY from you in the future?


No plans at the moment, maybe I will join another band for one show. But a couple of months ago I did a guestvocal for a band called MELTED SPACE, it´s a kind of metal opera with tons of different singers play characters in that. Very, very ambitious. It comes out soon and I think David Vincent (Ex-MORBID ANGEL) and Niklas from SHINING is on it. I heard about that and wanted to be part of that.


It´s very unusual to have in such a metal opera Death Metal singers.


Yeah, but it´s not an opera in that sense, it´s more a thing in an opera context with a big concept. Kind of that stuff.


We already mentioned IN FLAMES and guest singing. There is this very old song “The Shadow Duet”, you did with Anders back then together and You share with them a big history, so why didn´t you ever do something again with them? Or did you even talk about it?


No, not really. We did “Shadow Duet” live just in the beginning, when I started to sing, but we´ve never done it together, except in the rehearsal room. We joked about it, eventually we can do that, but never seriously. We haven´t played it in 15 years or so. It would fun and maybe someday we will do it, but it´s not high on the “to-do list”.


What can we expect on the show today?


It´s gonna be an awesome show. We have a new guy on bass – Anders Iwers from TIAMAT who was here just a couple of days ago with AVATARIUM and he is one of our best friends and one of the best guys in the world, what makes the shows in this summer even better. We also will do some cool material that we haven´t done before here, so it will be great. Summer Breeze is one of our favourite festivals actually. Very special.


I´m afraid, we have to come to an end. Is there anything left to say?
