Die Kinder vom Lake Bodom sind mit dem wohl aggressivsten Album ihrer Karriere zurück. Warum "I Worship Chaos" diese Richtung einschlug und was Alexi tun würde, wenn kein Chaos herrscht, erfuhren wir am Summer Breeze von ihm selbst. Übermüdet, aber dennoch gesprächig, erfuhren wir einiges über die Entstehung des aktuellen Werkes.




Hey Alexi, ich hörte, ihr hattet heute schon reichlich „Spaß“ am Flughafen?


Yeah (lacht). Ich meine es ist, was es ist... Dinge wie diese passieren, aber wir sind jetzt hier, auch wenn ich diese Nacht überhaupt nicht geschlafen hatte. Tut mir leid, dass wir zu spät sind.


Kein Problem. Ich hatte schon die Chance euer neues Album „I Worship Chaos“ zu hören, also lass uns etwas darüber sprechen. Wo siehst du denn die Hauptunterschiede zum Vorgänger?


Grundsätzliche Dinge... ja ich weiß, es klingt wie ein Klischee, aber es ist wahr. Es ist verdammt viel düsterer und das kannst du spüren. Wenn du dir das ganze Album anhörst, dann klingt es düsterer, härter und faktisch haben wir versucht ein paar Dinge anders zu machen. Ich rede von den Riffs und dem Zeug, das es so viel heavier macht. Plus, was mein Lieblingspart des Albums ist, Freunde, die das Album bereits gehört haben fanden, dass es verdammt eingängig ist.


Das ist interessant, denn für mich war es schwerer in das Album richtig reinzukommen als bei dem letzten. Aber wenn ich ehrlich bin, konnte ich es auch erst zwei Mal ganz anhören.

Haha, nein – das kann ja etwas Positives sein, so kannst du länger Spaß mit einem Album haben.

Welche Songs würdest du empfehlen als erstes anzuchecken, vielleicht weil sie deine Favoriten sind oder etwas Spezielles an sich haben?>f>>

Grundsätzlich sind das die Songs die schon draußen sind. Das wäre „Morrigan“, der Titeltrack „I Worship Chaos“ und... wie hieß der nochmal? Sorry ich bin so verdammt müde (lacht). Ach ja der Opener „I Hurt“, er ist so scheiß heavy und hat einen so catchy Refrain. Und da ist auch noch der letzte Song, „Widdershins“, der ist einer meiner Lieblinge.




Warum habt ihr „Morrigan“ als erste Single ausgewählt?


Jeder der das Album gehört hat, war sofort von dem Song angetan und schlug vor den als Single zu nehmen und ich wusste auch, dass jeder in der Band dem zustimmen würde. Also sagten alle vom Management und vom Label, dass sie diesen Song als Single wollen. Anfangs war ich mir nicht wirklich sicher. Ich meine er ist scheiß heavy, aber irgendwie nicht CHILDREN OF BODOM auf eine bestimmte Weise. Und vielleicht sind Leute davon angepisst, oder auch nicht – das weißt du vorher nie. Aber ich denke es hat funktioniert, denn du kannst nicht abstreiten, dass der Song verfickt geil ist.


Und wie waren die Reaktionen? Waren Leute angepisst?


Nein, bisher nicht. Soweit ich weiß, waren die Reaktionen sehr gut. Wir waren überrascht, Leute erwähnten zwar, dass er anders klingt, aber immer noch BODOM ist. Ich will keinen Scheiß über „Halo Of Blood“ reden oder so, aber dieses Album ist definitiv COB, nur viel anspruchsvoller und mutiger. Mann, das ist so schwer zu erklären, vor allem ohne Schlaf.


Was bedeutet der Titel?


Lange Geschichte in kurz: ich kam mit dem Titel und den Lyrics daher. Es war nicht wirklich meine Entscheidung ihn als Albumtitel zu verwenden, aber grundsätzlich halte ich Ruhe nicht aus, ich brauche das Chaos mit all den Leuten und Lärm hier rundherum auf Festivals und so weiter. Es muss nicht so dramatisch wie Krieg und Tod sein, es geht darum normale Dinge wie Sport oder was auch immer zu machen, aber ich brauche da immer irgendetwas im Hintergrund. Stille langweilt mich zu Tode. Darum geht es grundsätzlich in dem Titel.


Was kannst du mir über das Artwork erzählen? Überraschung... der Reaper ist darauf zu sehen... aber es sieht dennoch irgendwie anders aus. Es sieht apokalyptisch aus.


Yeah, du hast da den Reaper im Vordergrund des ausgetrockneten Sees, alles ist tot rundherum. Es ist als kommst zu zurück und alles ist einfach weg. Unser Bassist Henka ist immer eingebunden in die Entstehung. Er kam mit der Idee, ein gelbes Cover zu verwenden, was wir als Joke empfanden, aber es funktioniert wunderbar.




Könntest du dir vorstellen irgendwann ein Artwork ohne Reaper zu haben, oder ist es dafür schon zu spät?


Oh fuck, nein! Keine Chance Mann. So lange CHILDREN OF BODOM existiert, gibt es kein Artwork ohne Reaper!


Worum geht es in den weiteren Texten? Ich hörte, dass sie dieses Mal noch aggressiver ausgefallen sind.


Ich denke schon. Ich war immer schon aggressiv bei in meinen Texten. Dieses Mal ist es aber nachvollziehbarer. Es sind hier keine Mysterien versteckt oder so. Es ist schwer zu erklären, aber ich denke Leute, können sich schneller damit identifizieren.




Ihr werdet mit LAMB OF GOD auf Tour gehen – was können wir von der Tour erwarten und wie passen diese Bands zusammen?


Es ist so verdammt heavy und scheiß-chaotisch. Diese Tour ist einfach „true fucking metal to the bone“. Wir haben eine große Vergangenheit zusammen, wir waren 2004 gemeinsam auf Tour und sind Freunde geworden. Wir lieben LAMB OF GOD und sie lieben CHILDREN OF BODOM. Aber auch die Musik... sie ist so unterschiedlich. So können wir sicher neue Fans finden, genauso wie sie. Diese Tour ist eines der besten Dinge, die uns jemals passiert sind. Es ist so verdammt heavy!




Ich denke auch dass es sehr gut passt, weil beide Bands diese massive Energie auf die Bühne bringen.


Yeah, wir versuchen immer uns gegenseitig zu toppen, darum wird es immer heavier und heavier.

Hey Alexi, i heard you had some „fun“ on the airport today?

Yeah (laughs). I mean it is what it is... stuff like that happens, but we are here now, but i didn´t sleep this night at all. So sorry for I am late.


No problem. I already had the chance to hear your new record “I Worship Chaos”, so let’s talk a little bit about it. Where do you see the main differences in comparison to “Halo Of Blood”?


It´s basically... I know it comes out like a cliché, but it´s true. It´s way fucking darker and you can feel that. When you hear the whole album, it´s darker, heavier and in fact we tried to do something a little bit different. I mean the riffs and that stuff, what makes it really heavier. Plus, which is my favorite part of the album, is that friends who already listened to it, said that it´s so catchy.


That´s interesting, because for me it was harder to get into the record than the last one. But to be honest, I just had the time for two cycles.


Ok, you are the first one. But I am sorry.


Haha, no – that can be a positive thing, because so I can have maybe much longer fun with it.


Yeah, give it a fifth or sixth time...


Which songs would you recommend to listen first to, maybe because it´s your favorite or have something special to you?


There are basically these songs that are already out, that´s “Morrigan”, the title track “I Worship Chaos” and... what was it called? Sorry I am so tired (laughs). Oh yeah, the opener track “I Hurt”, it´s heavy as shit, and has a very catchy chorus. And there is also the last song “Whiddershins” and that´s one of my favorites.


Why did you choose “Morrigan” as your first single?


Everyone who listened to the record was instantly into this song and suggested to do that and I knew everybody in the band would agree with that. So everybody in the record company and management said they want this song as single. In the first place I wasn´t really sure, I mean this song is heavy as shit, but it´s so not CHILDREN OF BODOM in a way, and it´s probably pisses people of, or not – you never know. But i think it worked, because you can´t deny, this song is pretty fucking awesome.


And how where the reactions on it? Did it piss people off?


No not so far. As far as I know the reactions are very good. We are surprised, because people mentioned that it´s different, but still BODOM. I don´t want to talk shit about “Halo Of Blood” or something, but this one is definitely CHILDREN OF BODOM but it´s way more sophisticated and courageous. Man, that´s so hard to explain, especially without any sleep last night.


What is the title about?


Long story short. I came with the title “I Worship Chaos” and the lyrics. It wasn´t really my decision to use it as title, but basically I can´t stand silence, i need this chaos like here around us with all the people, noises and that stuff on festivals. It´s not so dramatic like war or death, it can be me just doing sports or doing normal things like everyone, but I always need something in the background. Silence bores the shit out of me. That´s what it is basically about.


What can you tell me about the artwork? Surprise... the reaper is on it... but there is still a big difference. It looks a little bit apocalyptic.


Yeah, you got the reaper in front of the dried out lake, everything is dead around. It´s like when you come back, everything is fucking gone. Our Bass player Henkka is always involved with that. He came with the idea to use a yellow cover, and that used to be a joke for the rest of us, but it worked out pretty fine.


Could you imagine to have some day an artwork without the reaper, or is it too late now for that?


Oh fuck, no! No way man. As long as CHILDREN OF BODOM fucking exist, there is no album cover without the reaper!


What about the lyircs on this record, I heard they are more aggressive this time, is that true?


I guess so. I´ve always been aggressive in my lyircs. This time around it´s more approachable. There are no mysteries or so hidden. It´s hard to explain, but I think people can more relay on things on this one.


You will be on tour with LAMB OF GOD – what can we expect and how do you think these two bands fit together?


It´s so fucking heavy and chaotic as shit. It´s like, you know, this tour is true fucking metal to the bone. We have a long history together, we toured in 2004 and we became of friends, we love LAMB OF GOD and they love CHILDREN OF BODOM. But also, the music is so different from each other. So we can find new fans and so can they. This tour is one of the best things that happened to us ever. It so heavy as shit.


I think it fits very well, because both bands have this massive energy on stage.


Yeah, we always try to top each other, that’s why it´s always get heavier and heavier.
