FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH sind mit mehreren goldenen Platten in ihrer Heimat den Staaten bereits seit Jahren Superstars des Metals. Aktuell sind sie dabei auch Europa im Sturm zu erobern. Ihre Geheimwaffe dazu ist das kommende sechste Album "Got Your Six" über das wir bereits am Nova Rock mit Bassist Chris Kael ausführlich sprechen konnten.


Hey, wie geht’s dir? Genießt du die Festival-Saison?


Die Festival-Saison ist eine meiner liebsten Zeiten im Jahr. Ich bin selbst großer Musikfan und geh halt dann raus und schau mir ein paar Bands an und heute gibt’s ein cooles Package, das wird ein geiler Tag!




Also nutzt du die Zeit auch, um andere Bands anzusehen…


Klar! Heute will ich mir auf jeden Fall MOTÖRHEAD und SLIPKNOT ansehen. Und natürlich sind wir ja aktuell auf Tour mit JUDAS PRIEST und haben da auch immer wieder frei und da habe ich einige tolle Shows von ihnen gesehen. Ich glaube, mittlerweile habe ich sie schon sieben Mal gesehen (lacht).


Und wie läuft eure Tour mit den Burschen von Priest?


Großartig! Wir verstehen uns alle wirklich gut und spielen an wirklich großen Venues, spielen viele Opener Shows und für JUDAS PRIEST-Fans, die wahrscheinlich noch nie zuvor von uns gehört haben. Darum versuchen wir ihnen Feuer unterm Arsch zu machen und ein paar verdammt gute Shows zu spielen.


Darauf freue ich mich, ich werde euch nämlich in Prag sehen…


Oh, das ist cool… Ich glaube, soweit ich mich erinnern kann, bin ich zum ersten Mal in Prag und es ist auch das erste Mal für die Band. Ich bin aber nicht sicher, ich meine, ich bin seit vier Jahren dabei und ich komme das erste Mal nach Prag und bin wirklich sehr erfreut darüber.


Wie habt ihr die großartige Möglichkeit gekriegt, mit JUDAS PRIEST zu spielen? Vielleicht weil Rob bei „Lift Me Up“ mitmachte?


Genau, so hat das ganze begonnen und wir sind Freunde geworden. Seitdem befürchte ich, dass es so wird wie PANTERA in Europa eingefallen sind, als sie mit JUDAS PRIEST unterwegs waren. Also als großer PANTERA und JUDAS PRIEST Fan habe ich immer darüber nachgedacht und hoffentlich ist es jetzt unsere Chance um durchzustarten und einen Teil der Crowd auf unsere Seite zu bringen und sie uns akzeptieren.




Und wie reagieren die JUDAS PRIEST Fans auf euch?


Unglaublich… In Berlin kam ein Typ mit einem JUDAS PRIEST Shirt auf mich zu und fing auf einmal an zu erzählen: „Hey ich habe noch nie solche Typen wie euch gesehen und ehrlich, ich dachte dass ihr Scheiße seid, aber ich habe euch geliebt!“ Was für ein besseres Statement könnte es gebe? (lacht)


Euer nächstes Album wird „Got YourSix“ heißen, was wollt ihr damit sagen?


“Got your six“ ist ein Militärausdruck. Wenn du mit einem Flugzeug unterwegs bist, musst du dir eine Uhr vorstellen. Auf 12 Uhr hast du die Person vor dir, der anführt und du hast die Person hinter dir, also auf 6 Uhr. Das ist der, der dir den Rücken freihält, also derjenige „got your six“. Und damit meine ich, dass unsere Fans so großartig zu uns waren über die Jahre. Wir haben bis jetzt drei goldene Schallplatten und Nummer 4 ist nicht so unwahrscheinlich. Und das in einer Zeit, in der die Leute nicht mehr wirklich Alben kaufen, haben unsere Fans das immer noch gemacht, was uns dann auch die Möglichkeit gegeben hat, nach Europa zu kommen um diese großen Shows zu machen. Es haben uns schon viele Menschen erzählt, dass sie unsere Musik durch harte Zeiten gebracht hat, weißt du. Ich sage immer, dass wir ihren Soundtrack machen, aber die Leute trotzdem für sich selbst kämpfen. Darum können wir auf sie zählen, sie supporten uns, wir supporten sie und das beruht auf Gegenseitigkeit.


Ich hatte leider bis jetzt noch nicht die Gelegenheit hineinzuhören, also was kannst du mir schon darüber erzählen, was erwartet die Hörer?


Auf diesem Album haben wir es darauf angelegt, wieder aggressiver zu klingen, ganz ehrlich. Es ist mehr UpTempo Zeug und ich kann es mit nichts vergleichen. Ich denke da nur mal an „Lift Me Up“, „Under And Over It“ usw. Das Zeug mit einem gewissen Drive.


Straight in your Face-Songs…


Genau! Straight in your face! Genau genommen hat unser Label am Ende des Aufnahmeprozesses gemeint, ob wir bitte wenigstens einen langsamen Song machen können. Also gingen wir nochmal zurück und machten einen langsamen Song und es stellte sich heraus, dass er großartig geworden ist. Wir wissen einfach wie mans macht… wir haben „Coming Down“, „Wrong Side Of Heaven“, „The Bleeding“. Da gibt es echt nur diesen einen ruhigen Song und der Rest ist einfach nur „Middle Fingers in the air, fuck you, here we are!“ (lacht)




Jeremy hat mir mal in einem anderen Interview erzählt, dass ihr immer versucht die Sachen unterschiedlich anzugehen. Also war diese Richtung aufgrund dieser Einstellung geplant?


Das war unser Ziel auf dem Album. wir haben bei unserem Set festgestellt, dass wir große hymnische Songs wie „Coming Down“, „Remember Everything“ haben – wir haben das gemacht und auch sehr gut, also haben wir dann beschlossen zurück zum bare bone Heavy Metal zu gehen. Da gibt es einen Song, ich kann jetzt leider den Namen nicht nennen, aber im Chorus heißt es „Click clack, reload“ – denke daran, ich glaube, das ist mein Lieblingssong, der ist so richtig schön heavy.


Okay, da freue ich mich schon darauf. Also spielt ihr noch keine neuen Songs?


Ja, der Grund ist, dass in einer Zeit in der es Youtube gibt, die Leute mit einer Kamera in der Menge kurze beschissene Videos dann ins Internet stellen. Wir wollen einfach nicht, dass die Leute den ersten Eindruck vom Album via eines verschissenen Handys haben. Darum werden wir erst mal einen Track releasen, so in einer Woche oder zwei, der wird „Jeckyll & Hyde“ heißen.


Wird es so eine Art Lyric Video oder habt ihr ein richtiges dafür gedreht?


Es gibt ein richtiges Video dazu. Wir haben eine Menge Videos, bei denen wir nicht zu sehen sind. Und das Label meinte dann: „Könnt ihr bitte vorbeikommen und ein Video drehen?“ Wir meinten dann, dass sie doch die Leute, die die Geschichten schreiben, das Video machen lassen sollten, scheiß drauf. Das ist einfach nicht so meins, ich spiele Rock`n´Roll, verstehst du? Ich will da rausgehen und sofort eine Reaktion kriegen. Also haben wir dieses ziemlich witzige Video gemacht um diese Einstellung rüber zu bringen. So in der Art – ihr wollt ein Video, okay, los geht’s… (lacht)


Wird es wieder Gastmusiker oder –sänger geben?


Nicht auf diesem Album. Wie du schon sagtest, hat Jeremy ja erwähnt, dass wir auf jedem Album etwas anderes machen wollen. Die letzten Alben „Vol1“ und Vol2“ hatten Gäste mit darauf und damit hat es sich schon.




Also auch keine Cover-Songs auf dem Album?


Genau, auch keine Cover-Songs. Alle Songs sind komplett DEATH PUNCH-Style.


Was denkst du dann darüber, dass „Bad Company“ euer berühmtester und erfolgreichster Song, auch ein Cover ist?


Ich komme klar damit. Es hat uns eine Menge Türen geöffnet. Heutzutage im Musikbusiness musst du allem, was die Leute dazu bringt, dich anzuhören, auch nutzen. „Bad Company“ war so eine große Chance. Die Fans liebten es und sangen es gemeinsam mit der JUDAS PRIEST-Menge. Die alten Priest-Fans hören sich vielleicht das neue Zeug nicht an, aber jeder Motherfucker kennt „Bad Company“ und dreht durch. Also funktioniert es (lacht).


Habt ihr eure neuen Songs wieder mit dem mobilen Studio geschrieben?


Ja. Wir basteln da immer herum, schreiben Songs und nehmen Demos auf während wir unterwegs sind, und dann gehen wir ins Studio und nehmen den Song auf. Wir haben das bei jedem Album so gemacht, ausgenommen „The Way Of The Fist“.


Ich glaube auch, dass das die einzige Art und Weise ist, so schnell ein Album aufzunehmen…


Genau. Das funktioniert einfach am besten, denn wir sind fünf Alphamännchen in der Band, die alle ihre Ideen einbringen wollen. Unser Produzent Kevin ist da sehr gut um aussortieren, er ist sozusagen das Vermittler-Ohr, der nicht so emotional drin hängt und darum hört er so Sachen wie „Das ist es!“


Wie seid ihr auf die Idee mit der „Demand“-Kampagne mit PAPA ROACH gekommen?


Das ist wieder eine ganz andere Sache… wir haben etwas neues ausprobiert. Die Leute meinen immer „Aaaw, bitte kommt mal hier her… oh scheiße Jungs, ihr habt diesen Ort ausgelassen, wir haben euch doch gebeten auch zu uns zu kommen.“ Also haben wir dieses Mal Städte ausgesucht, wo wir wussten, dass wir dort spielen können und haben dann die Fans entscheiden lassen. Wir haben das in den Staaten gemacht und auch in Europa.


Und die Reaktionen waren gut?


Oh ja, sehr gut. Ich weiß, dass einige Millionen gevotet haben.


Und ich habe vor ein paar Tagen gesehen, das ihr auch in Wien spielen werdet, also ging das Ganze für uns gut aus…


Wir hatten auch gestern einen freien Tag in Wien. Auf fast jeder Tour haben wir hier einen freien Tag und ich liebe es, Wien ist eine großartige Stadt.


Was erwartet uns auf dieser Tour?


Es ist eine Co-Headliner-Tour, wir beenden die Show und PAPA ROACH spielen vor uns, aber ich glaube, beide Bands werden ein volles Headliner-Set spielen. Aktuell sind wir die Opener für JUDAS PRIEST und machen Festivals mit einem 45-Minuten-Set, manchmal auch 50 Minuten. Ivan dehnt das Set gerne, aber nur soweit, dass es keine Probleme gibt. Bei der Headliner Tour werden wir dann 1 ¼ bis 1½ Stunden oder so spielen. Ihr werdet neue Songs zu hören kriegen und wir haben auch schon darüber gesprochen, die Setlist durchzumischen. Ihr werdet also die neuen und auch die älteren Songs hören, die ihr schon lange oder noch gar nicht von uns gehört habt.


Das wäre großartig, denn wenn ich euch in Wien sehe, dann wird das mein drittes Mal dieses Jahr…


Das ist super. Und klar werden wir einige Songs im LineUp ändern… Nur für dich. (lacht)




Wir haben schon über Kampagnen gesprochen. Ihr habt ja auch mit dem letzten Titeltrack und dem Video dazu eine Kampagne gestartet, um Geld für Veteranen zu sammeln...


Genau. Die 5FDP for Vets-Kampagne. Es hat so funktioniert, dass man ein personalisiertes Shirt bestellen konnte. Und die ganzen Einnahmen daraus ging an Veteranen mit posttraumatischen Belasstungsstörungen und um den Veteranen mit Wohnungen zu helfen. Es war einfach unglaublich. Sie bedanken sich immer noch dafür, was wir für sie getan haben, diese Jungs haben einen harten Job und unser Job ist ein leichter, die große Klappe vor einem Publikum zu haben. Und die Leute helfen ja gerne und wir müssen ihnen sagen, wie sie helfen können. Wenn wir unsere Stimme dafür einsetzen können, um anderen Menschen zu helfen, dann werden wir das auch tun.


Und das Video war auch wirklich eine großartige Art. Als ich es das erste Mal in Verbindung mit der Musik gesehen habe, bekam ich Gänsehaut.


Wir haben viel darüber geredet und wollten es einfach machen, aber als wir das erste Mal das Video sahen, war es einfach so kraftvoll. Manche sagten, dass es einfach unglaublich ist und nicht wussten, dass das wirklich wahr ist, was da im Video gezeigt wird. Nach dem Ganzen, was sie durchgemacht haben… einfach verrückt.


Also gehe ich mal davon aus, dass wir in Zukunft noch mehr solche Kampagnen von euch erwarten dürfen?


Definitiv. Wenn wir ein Video machen, jetzt mal das aktuelle ausgenommen, hat es in Zukunft auch sicher wieder eine Message. Das neue hat natürlich auch eine Message, aber das müsst ihr selbst herausfinden.


Mir gefällt auch das „The House Of The Rising Sun“ Video. Wie war der Shoot dafür?


Es war wirklich cool. Es war verschissen heiß und haben es in der Wüste von Vegas gedreht.


Dann sage ich danke für deine Zeit und dieses nette Gespräch. Möchtest du noch etwas loswerden?


Ich danke immer den Fans, wann immer ich die Chance dafür kriege. Ich bin sehr aktiv in Social Networks unterwegs. Ich bin jetzt seit vier Jahren mit 5FDP unterwegs und mag die Erfahrungen mit Fans einfach, darum möchte ich allen Fans für den Support danken, dass sie unsere Musik hören und zu den Shows kommen, die Alben kaufen und das Merch. Wir wissen zu 100%, dass die Zeiten da draußen schwer sind und da den Support der Fans zu haben, wie in wir haben, schätzen wir wirklich sehr. How are you doing at the moment and how do you enjoy the festival season?


Festival season is one of my favorite times in the year. As a music fan by myself, you can come out to check out many bands and there is a cool package today, so it´s a hell of a day.


So, you use your time to check out other bands...


Oh yeah! I already got plans to see MOTÖRHEAD and SLIPKNOT. And of course, we are at the moment on tour with JUDAS PRIEST and doing Off-Days so I obviously enjoyed great shows of them. I think i saw them seven times now. (laughs)


So, how is the tour with the guys of Priest?


It´s great, we are doing really good and play some big venues, doing a lot of opening shows and we play for JUDAS PRIEST fans who might have not heard of us before. So we try to light some fire under their asses and play some damn good shows.


I´m looking forward to it, because I will see you in Prague...


Oh, very nice... I think it´s, so far as I know... it´s my first time in Prague and maybe the first time of the band there. I´m not quite sure, I mean, I am in the band for four years now and it´s my first time to go over there and I´m really excited.


How did you get this great opportunity to play with JUDAS PRIEST? Was it because Rob joined you on “Lift Me Up”?


Exactly, thats kind of how it started and we became kind of friends from there. Doing this dates, I am aware it´s like PANTERA broke over in Europe, when they were out with JUDAS PRIEST. So as a huge PANTERA and JUDAS PRIEST fan I was constantly thinking about that and hopefully this is our chance to kind of blow up and got some of the crowds on our side, they incredible accepted us.


So how did the old JUDAS PRIEST fans react on you?


Awesome... there was one day in Berlin, a guy in JUDAS PRIEST shirt was walking towards me and he started to tell me: “Hey, I never have seen you guys before and honestly, I thought you gonna be crap, but I loved you guys!” What better statement could we get? (laughs) So clearly we turned one fan beck there.


Your next record will be called “Got Your Six”, what does that mean?


”Got Your Six” is essentially a military term. When you are flying with plains, imagine a clock. You got at 12 o´clock, that the person in front of you, leading the way and you got the person in the back at the 6 o´clock. This is the one who got your six, what basically mean, he got you back. I mean the fans have been great to us over the years. We got three gold records to this point and number four is real close. In a time when people not really buyng records, our fans are still doing that, which gives us the opportunity to come over here to Europe, to put on the big shows we do. People say that our music got them through a lot of stuff, you know. I always say we got their soundtrack, but people fighting through things their self. So we got their back, they support us; we support them and that´s a mutual relationship.


I didn´t had the chance to hear it yet, so what can you already tell me about, what to expect?


This one we intended to go more aggressive, honestly. It´s more UpTempo stuff and if I have to compare it to anything, I think about “Lift Me Up”, “Under And Over It” and so on. The stuff with driving tempo...


Straight in your face songs...


Exactly! Straight in your face. Actually at the end of the recording process our record company said, this is great, but can we please have just one slow song? So we went back and did one slow song and it turned out great as well. We know how to do them... we got “Coming Down”, “Wrong Side Of Heave”, “The Bleeding”. There is just this one slow song and the rest is middle fingers in the air, fuck your, here we are! (laughs)


Jeremy told me on another interview, that you always try to do things different. So was this direction planed because of this attitude?


That was the goal on this record. We noticed in our set, that we´ve got big anthemic songs like “Coming Down”, “Remember Everything” – we have done that and we have done that very great, so we said, let’s get back to bare bone heavy metal. There is a song, I can´t recall the name, but in the chorus it says “Click clack, reload” – remember that one, I think it´s my new favourite song, it´s a really heave one.


Ok, I am looking forward to it. So, you don’t play new songs yet?


Yeah. The reason is, in a time with Youtube, people have a camera in the crowd and put small shitty videos in the internet. We don´t want people to have a first impression of new material via a shitty cell phone video. So we wan´t to release the first track, which comes out in a week or two and it´s called “Jeckyll & Hyde”.


Will it be some kind of lyrics-video or did you shoot a real one for it?


This is a real video. We have a lot of videos that hasn´t had us in it. And the label was like: “can you please show up and do a video for us?” We said, let the people who write stories do the videos, fuck it. I am not into that, I play Rock´N´Roll, you know? I want to get out and have immediate reactions. So we did a quite funny cheek video to show that attitude. Like, you wan´t a video, ok, here we go... (laughs).


Will there be some guest musicians or singer again?


Not on this one. Like you said, Jeremy mentioned before that we wan´t to do something different on every record. The last record “Vol1” and “Vol2” had guests, so we did that and that´s it.


So I guess, also no cover songs on this one?


Yeah. No cover songs either. All songs are completely DEATH PUNCH style.


What do you think about, that “Bad Company” is your most famous and successful song and that it´s actually a cover?


It works for me. I mean that opened up a whole lot of doors for us. In music business today, anything that bring people to listen to you, you got to take some chances. “Bad Company” was such a big chance. The fans like it and they sang along with the JUDAS PRIEST crowd. The old Priest fans may not listen to new stuff, but every motherfucker out there knows “Bad Company” and goes crazy. So it works (laughs).


And I guess if you tell young people that this songs is from you, they would buy it. Because you put in your own style and it fits perfectly in your setlist.


Exactly. The song was already great as it was, but thats the best way to do it, to bring in your own interpretation. The same with “House Of The Rising Sun” or “Mama Said Knock You Out”. When we were talkin about “Mama”, i thought... Okayyy, but when it came out, i get it now.


Did you write the new songs again with your mobile studio?


Yes. We are always doing some stuff, writing songs and recording demos when we are out on the street until we go into the studio where we record the song. We did that with every record except the first one, “The Way Of The Fist”.


I guess it´s the only way to do a record that fast...


Exactly. That works best, because we have five Alphamales in one band trying to get ideas in there. Our Producer Kevin is good in sorting through our ideas, he is kind of a third-party ear who is not emotionally so into it, so he hears things like: “thats the one”.


How came the idea of this “demand” campaign with PAPA ROACH?


That´s another thing... we just try to do new things. People always talking: “Aw please come here... oh fuck guys you missed this place, we told you to come here.” So this time we throwed out cities where we know we can play and let the fans vote. We did it in the States and also here in Europe as well.


So the reaction was good?


Oh yeah. Very good. I can say several million voted on it.


And I saw a few days ago, that you will play in Vienna, so everything´s fine for us around here..


We actually had a day-off in Vienna yesterday. On almost every tour we have a day-off there and I love it, it´s a good city.


What can we expect on this tour?


It´s a Co-Headliner-Tour, we close up the show and PAPA ROACH will play before us, but I think we both will have full headliner sets. So right now we open up for JUDAS PRIEST and doing the festival stuff with a 45-minutes set, sometimes 50. Ivan likes it to stretch it up a little bit, not to have too much trouble. The headliner tour will be one hour fifteen to one hour thirty or so. You will get new songs and we already talk about switching up the setlist. You will get the new ones and also older songs you haven´t heard from us for a long time or at all.


That would be good, because, if I visit the show in Vienna, and I am sure, I will do that, than I will see you three times this year...


That´s nice. And sure we will change some songs... just for you. (laughs).


We talked about campaigns. You also did a good campaign with the last titletrack and it´s video to raise money for veterans...


Yeah. The 5FDP for Vets Campaign. The way it worked was, you were able to order a personalized Shirt. And every money we earned from that went to veterans with post-traumatic stress and helped to get a home for vets. It was awesome. They always say thank you to us for what we do for the military, those guys have the hard job but our job is easy, just to have a big voice on the audience. And people always like to help, so we just have to tell them how they can do it. If we can use our voice to help other people, we will do that.


And the video was a great way to that. The first time a saw it in combination with the music, it got me goose bumps.


We talked a lot about it and we wanted to do it, but when I first saw the video, it was so powerful. Some people said, that´s unbelievable and said, they didn´t know that this is true, what is showed in the video. After all that they have been through... that´s craziness.


So I guess we can expect other campaigns like that in the future.


Definitely. If we do a video, except this new one, in the future it definitely has a message behind it. The new one has a message as well, of course, you have to figure that out.


I also like “The House Of The Rising Sun” video. How was it to shoot that video?


That was really cool. It was hot as fuck. We did that in the Vegas Dessert.

I always like to thank the fans whenever I get the chance to. I am active on social networks. I´ve been doing DEATH PUNCH for the last four years and I am still very close and like the fan experience, so I thank all the fans for supporting us, listen to us, coming up to the shows, buying the albums, buying the merch. We 100% know that the times are tough out there and to have the support we have from the fans we appreciate that much. So thank each and every one of you - we love you!
