FROSTTIDE ist eine junge Epic/Dark/Folk Metal Band aus Finnland. Sie waren Teil der Paganfest-Tour im heurigen Frühjahr und haben bereits zwei Alben veröffentlicht. Sänger Joni Snoro war bereit uns einige Fragen rund um die Band und allerlei anderes zu beantworten.


Hallo! Es war schön, dich in Wien zu treffen! Wie war die Tour für euch?


Hallo bin ich Joni Snoro von FROSTTIDE! Die Tour war wirklich gut!




Dies war eure zweite Tour durch Europa. Mögt ihr es auf einer so großen Tour zu sein?


Zweite Tour durch Europa - ja, aber es war eigentlich unsere dritte Europa-Tour außerhalb von Finnland!
Und ja Ich mag es ein Teil davon zu sein. Man hat einen eigenen Platz zum Schlafen, jeden Tag bekommt man gutes Essen, man hat ein großes Team um sich und das Beste ist natürlich, dass man mit großen Bands in den besten Konzert-Orten Europas spielen kann!


Wie war der Kontakt zu den anderen Bands – habt ihr sie vorher gekannt?


Wir haben mit TURISAS beim Heidenfest 2013 gespielt und wir haben auch einige finnische Shows mit KORPIKLAANI gemacht. Ich denke, dass die Atmosphäre zwischen den Bands wirklich toll war, vor allem zwischen den Mitgliedern der Bands mit denen wir im gleichen Nightliner waren (HEIDEVOLK & OBSCURITY). Wir haben uns wirklich gut mit den Jungs verstanden und ich kann es kaum erwarten, wieder mit ihnen zu arbeiten!


Ihr wart so jung, als ihr mit der Band angefangen habt! Haben euch eure Familie unterstützt?


Unsere Familien haben uns die ganze Zeit unterstützt und von ihnen haben wir die Möglichkeit bekommen, das zu machen was wir tun wollten.


Wie habt ihr zusammen gefunden?


Ich begann irgendwann im Jahr 2009 diese Art von Songs zu schreiben und ich fragte ein paar Leute, ob sie mit mir spielen möchten. Joonas Nislin war einer dieser Jungs. Joonas waren in meiner Klasse zu dieser Zeit. Wenig später kam Juho Patinen in die Band um Gitarre zu spielen. In dieser Zeit war Juho in derselben Schule mit Joonas und mir. So sind Joonas, Juho und ich als "Dreieck" am längsten in dieser Band. Irgendwann im Jahr 2011 haben wir begonnen, einen neuen Keyboarder zu suchen und Felipe hat mich angerufen. Ich kannte Felipe, weil wir davor bereits seine alte Band AVENIE supportet haben. Felipe begann in dieser Zeit mit uns zu spielen und er trat der Band offiziell 2012 bei. Lauri ist einer von meinen "neuesten" Freunden und als wir im Jahr 2013 nach einem Bassisten für das Heidenfest gesucht haben, war ich gleichzeitig mit Lauri unterwegs und dann ist mir eingefallen, dass er ein Bassist ist und fragte ihn, ob er mit uns kommen wollte, um mit uns zu spielen - so hat es begonnen. Das ist die Geschichte in aller Kürze und das ist unser jetziges Line-up!


Warum habt ihr euch entschieden, diese Art von Musik zu machen?


Ich wollte etwas machen, das aggressiv und schön zugleich sein kann und in diesem Genre ist es möglich. Ich sehe auch, dass es in unserer Musik keine Grenzen gibt. Wir können langsame Balladen mit cleanen Vocals machen und danach Songs mit Blastbeats und Growling, und es klingt immer noch nach FROSTTIDE. Das ist das Beste daran.


Welche Arten von Musik hörst du privat?


Ich höre alle Arten von Musik! Wenn der Song gut ist mir das Genre egal!


Euer erstes Album war sehr erfolgreich und das zweite auch. Wie schwierig war es für euch ein Label zu finden?


Wir hatten Glück in dieser Sache. Der Besitzer von Rock The Nation (RTN) hat unsere Songs gehört und er mochte sie sehr. Er nahm Kontakt zu NoiseArt Records auf, das ein RTN-Schwesterunternehmen ist und die gaben uns einen Plattenvertrag und so unterzeichneten wir auch den Booking-Deal mit RTN!




Auf beiden Alben sind wirklich tolle Intros! Wer ist der Komponist?


Juho hat beide gemacht!


"Blood Oath" ist epischer als "Awakening" – ist das der Weg den ihr weiterverfolgen wollt?


Ich kann das nicht beantworten,... noch nicht! Die Zeit wird es zeigen!


Ist Songwriting Teamarbeit oder Arbeit von einem Bandmitglied?


Bei FROSTTIDE schreibt normalerweise nur einer die Songs und danach werden sie mit der Band geprobt. Es kann einige Teile geben, die wir dann neu schreiben oder wir machen kleine Veränderungen!


Es gibt so viele Bands in Finnland. Wie schwierig ist es populär zu werden?


Ich denke, es ist wirklich schwierig, hier in Finnland mit Metal-Musik populär zu werden.
Wir haben zu viele Metal-Bands hier und das "Traurigste" ist, dass wir hier zu viele große Metal-Bands haben! Auch ist Musik nicht das einzige, was man heutzutage braucht um populär zu werden, weil man muss auch viel Promotion in Social Medias usw. machen, wenn man will dass die Menschen deine Musik finden.


Wie ist es für eine junge Band mit alteingesessenen Bands spielen? Werdet ihr von denen respektiert?


Es ist Ehre für uns und es ist wirklich gute Chance von ihnen zu lernen! Und wegen der anderen Frage: Das musst du die fragen, hehe!





Was macht ihr im täglichen Leben?


Nur Rock n Roll Sachen, trinken etc.!
Nur ein Scherz... einige von uns sind auf der Suche nach Arbeit und einige von uns sind in der Schule!


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft? >

Auf den Punkt gebracht: Wir wollen in der ganzen Welt spielen und das Wort von FROSTTIDE verbreiten.

Hello! It was nice to meet you in Vienna! How was the tour for you?


Hello I’m Joni Snoro from FROSTTIDE! The tour was really fine!


This was your second tour through Europe. Do you like to be on such a big tour?


Second tour through the Europe yes, but it was actually our third European tour away from Finland!
And yeah I like to be part of these. You have own place to sleep, you get great food every day, you have great crew with you and the best thing of course is that you can play in the best gig places in Europe with great bands!


How was the contact to the other bands - did you know them before?


We have played with TURISAS before in Heidenfest 2013 and also we have played some Finnish shows with KORPIKLAANI before. I think that the atmosphere between the bands was really great especially between members of the bands which were in the same night liner with us (HEIDEVOLK & OBSCURITY). We got really close with those guys and can’t wait to work with those guys again!


You were so young when you started with the band! Did your families support you?


Our families have supported us all the time and because of them we have had change to do this stuff what we have done so far.


How did you find together?


I started to write these kind of songs somewhere in 2009 and I asked some people to play with me. Joonas Nislin was one of those guys. Joonas were in my class in that time. Little bit later Juho Patinen joined the band to play guitar. In that time Juho was in same school with Joonas and me. So Joonas, Juho and me are the “triangle” who have been in this band longest. Somewhere in 2011 we started to search new keyboard player and Felipe called me. I knew Felipe because we were supporting Felipe’s old band AVENIE before. Felipe started to play with us in those times and he joined to band officially 2012. Lauri is one of my “newest” friends and in 2013 we were looking for a bass player before the Heidenfest, same time I was driving with Lauri and then I realized that “You are bass player!” and asked “Do you want to come to play with us?” and there it starts. That’s the story in nutshell and that’s our line-up now!


Why did you decide to make this type of music?


I wanted to play something which can be aggressive and beautiful same time and in this genre it’s possible. I also see that in our music there’s no limit. We can make slow ballads with clean vocals and after that we can make songs with blast beat and growling and it still sounds FROSTTIDE. That’s the best thing of it.


What types of music are you listening private?


I listen to all kinds of music! If the song is good I don’t care about the genre!


Your first album was very successful and the second also. How difficult was it for you to find a label?


We were lucky in that thing. The owner of Rock The Nation (RTN) have heard our songs and liked us really much. He contacted to NoiseArt Records which is RTN’s sister company and they gave us a record deal and also we signed booking deal with RTN!


On both albums are really great intros! Who is the composer?


Juho made both of those!


"Blood Oath" is more epic than "Awakening" - is this the way that you will continue?


I’m not answering to that.. yet! Time will show!


Is songwriting teamwork or work of one bandmember?


With FROSTTIDE normally one guy writes the songs and after that we’ll check the songs with band. There might be some parts which we write again or do little changes!


There are so many bands in Finland. How difficult is it to become popular?


I think that it’s REALLY difficult to become popular with metal music here in Finland.
We have too many metal bands here and the “saddest” thing is that we have too many great metal bands here! Also music is not the only thing nowadays what you need to become popular because you also have to do lots of promotion in social media etc. if you want that people find your music.


How is it for a young band like you to play with long-established bands? Do they respect you?


It’s honour for us and it’s really good chance to learn from them! And to the other question: you have to ask from them hehe!


What are you doing in daily life?


Just basic rock n roll stuff, drinking etc.!
Just kidding.. some of us are looking for work and some of us are in school!


What are your plans for the future?


In a nutshell: We want play all over the world and spread the word of FROSTTIDE!
