Die Jungs und Dame rund um Frontmann Phil Labonte feiern unter dem Banner ALL THAT REMAINS in den Staaten einen Erfolg nach dem anderen. Alben wie "The Fall Of Ideals" oder "Overcome" charteten immer wieder. Auch das aktuelle Werk "The Order Of Things" weiß zu überzeugen, spaltet aber auch so manche Fan-Meinung. In Europa tut sich die Band aus Massachusetts zwar noch schwer, doch regelmäßige Auftritte wie auch der am Nova Rock, sollten so manchen neuen Fan auf den Plan rufen. Wir sprachen mit einem gut aufgelegten Phil im Backstage-Bereich des Nova Rock.


Hey, wie geht’s euch und wie läuft die Festival-Saison bisher?


Es ist der letzte Tag, die letzte Show. Es war cool, wir sind jetzt seit ein paar Wochen hier. Wir haben am Rock in Park, Sweden Rock, Download usw. gespielt und wir kommen ja auch nicht so oft hier her. Das letzte Mal war vor zwei Jahren und wir finden es echt cool, dass wir wieder hergekommen sind und sehen, wie viele Menschen noch kommen um uns zu hören.




Ich freue mich schon auf die heutige Show, ich konnte euch noch nie live erleben – keine Ahnung warum, aber es ist leider so… Aber lass uns zunächst mal über euer neues Album „The Order Of Things“ reden. Was war die Idee hinter dem Albumtitel und worum geht’s in den Lyrics?


Tja, auf dem Album geht es um verschiedene Themen, es ist kein Konzeptalbum. Der Titel ist etwas wie… es gibt so viel das wir nicht unter Kontrolle haben im Leben. Ungefähr 90% von dem was in deinem Leben passiert, kann man nicht kontrollieren. Das einzige was man kontrollieren kann ist, wie man darauf reagiert. Die anderen 10 % kann man kontrollieren. Es geht um den Punkt im Leben, an dem man akzeptiert, dass man nicht alles kontrollieren kann und weitermacht und sicher geht, dass es die eigene Reaktion nicht schlimmer macht. Es ist einfach eine Art es willkommen zu heißen, wie es ist – das ist „The Order Of Things“.


Um bei den Lyrics zu bleiben, ich habe zwei Songs herausgepickt. Der erste ist „This Won’t Probably End Well“ – was wird nicht gut enden?


Jeder hatte schon mal einen Punkt im Leben, an den man sich dachte „das ist wahrscheinlich eine verdammt beschissene Idee, aber ich mache es trotzdem“. So wie „Halte mein Bier und schau mir mal zu!“ Ich glaube, damit können sich viele Leute identifizieren. Es wird einfach nicht gut funktionieren, aber ich versuche es trotzdem.


Und was wollt ihr mit „Trve Cvlt“ sagen?


Ah, das heißt einfach gerade heraus, dass in der Metal Szene viele Idioten sind (lacht).
Weißt du, je mehr Arten von Metal du hörst, umso mehr kennst du. Du kannst es in allen Genres des Metal sehen, ganz speziell wenn es mehr in Underground geht. Wenn die Leute nur eine bestimmte Richtung hören, dann entwickeln sie immer weniger Akzeptanz anderen Richtungen gegenüber. Dann hört man so Sachen wie „Das ist kein trver Metal“, „das wurde in Norwegen geschrieben, darum ist es nicht trve…“ oder „Du hast das Album nicht bei Vollmond aufgenommen, darum ist es nicht trve“. Das ist eine Einstellung wie „es ist nicht gut genug, weil ich und meine fünf Freunde finden, dass es nicht gut ist.“ Eine sehr eingeschränkte Perspektive wie Metal sein sollte.
Also: Fuck you, ich höre was immer ich will.




Auf jedem Album habt ihr eure Ausrichtung wieder ein bisschen verändert, kein Album klingt wie das zuvor. „The Order Of Things“ ist für mich das eingängigste und modernste Album von ALL THAT REMAINS.


Danke! Ich und Josh haben uns auf die Lyrics fokussiert. Das war unser Hauptfokus, um den Hörer einzufangen und die Aufmerksamkeit zu kriegen. Ich persönlich mag kurze Songs die auf den Punkt kommen und sich schnell in meinem Kopf festsetzen. Das ist es, was ich hören will.


Ich bin mir sicher, dass ihr damit eine Menge Fans erreichen werdet..

…aber was denkst du, ist mit den alten Fans? Es gibt immer Leute, die herumjammern wie zum Beispiel, dass du weniger Screams verwendest, manche Songs nicht hart genug sind usw.


Ja das können die Leute schon sagen, aber meiner Meinung nach, sind das genau die Leute, die sich das ganze Album noch nicht angehört haben. Die Leute lieben es zu sagen – speziell über uns – dasss wir nicht mehr heavy genug sind, was einfach falsch ist, das ist eine falsche Aussage. Weil sie sich einfach nicht das ganze Album angehört haben. Du kannst nicht sagen, dass da nicht genug heavy Songs auf diesem Album sind, oder auf „A War You Cannot Win“ oder „For We Are Many“. Wenn du ehrlich bist, können das echt nur Leute sagen, die nur die Singles gehört haben. Also bin ich der Meinung, dass das eine Misinterpretation aufgrund von Ignoranz ist.




Ich glaube, dass ihr euch da nicht viel Gedanken darüber macht, ob ihr jetzt mehr oder weniger Screams auf einem Album habt, sondern einfach den Style, der am besten zum Song passt…


Es geht immer darum, wie es am besten passt. Es gibt da einen Song, der „No Knock“ heißt. Als wir den Titel schrieben, noch bevor wie die Lyrics hatten, kam Jeanne mit dem Titel „Alice In Chains“, weil sich ein Riff genauso anfühlte wie ein ALICE IN CHAINS-Song. Also wollten wir auch Vocallines schreiben, die ein bisschen wie diese Band klingen, haben es aber nicht geschafft. Es klang für uns einfach nicht richtig. also meinten wir „Ok, es ist ein Heavy Song, warum nicht einfach screamen?“. Und genau so machen wir das einfach. Wenn es nicht passt, dann ändern wir Richtung komplett und glücklicherweise sind wir eine Band, die diese Möglichkeit hat. Wir wollten eigentlich anders klingen, aber wenn es nicht funktioniert, dann betrachten wir es von einem anderen Blickwinkel und darum ist der Sound immer unterschiedlich.


Erkennt ihr Unterschiede zu den US, wenn wir nach Europa kommt? Das Publikum, aber auch der Erfolg… ist es für euch hier schwerer?


Ja es ist definitiv schwerer, weil Europa so weit weg ist. Es ist einfach unglaublich teuer für uns, hier her zu kommen. Also hier her zu kommen und zu touren kostet uns definitiv mehr als wir damit verdienen. Die Flüge sind sehr teuer und dann die ganze Crew und alles. Verglichen mit den US ist es dort einfacher. Wir sind mehr in den US geblieben und haben darum auch dort mehr Erfolg und werden im Radio gespielt und so.


Also ist es wirklich großartig, dass ihr die Chance habt, Europa hin und wieder zu besuchen, weil wir euch dann live sehen können.


Wir versuchen es, so oft wir können.


Ihr hattet einige LineUp-Veränderungen am Anfang, aber seit 2007 seid ihr konstant. Wie ist die Chemie zwischen den Bandmitgliedern?


Gut! Weißt du, wenn du versuchst, eine Band zu gründen und dir einen Namen zu machen, da gibt’s bei vielen Bands Änderungen im LineUp. Du musst dein Zuhause verlassen, vielleicht deinen Job kündigen und hast aber zuhause Rechnungen zu bezahlen. Und du musst die Band in eine Richtung lenken, wie du möchtest dass sie klingt und trotzdem auch finanziell rentabel ist. Und 2007 war einfach das Jahr in dem wir zusammengefunden haben.


Du bist zweimal mit KILLSWITCH ENGAGE als Sänger getourt und hast dich 2002 für diese Position beworben, als Jesse Leach die Band verließ. Was ist damals passiert und wie war es mit diesen Typen auf Tour zu sein?


2002 habe ich mich beworben, da die Sache mit ALL THAT REMAINS noch auf sehr wackeligen Füßen stand. Wir hatten gerade mal ein Album herausgebracht, unseren Gitarristen hinausgeschmissen und unser Drummer brach sich einen Arm, also konnten wir fast zwei Monate nichts tun. Als ich dann herausfand, dass KSE einen neuen Sänger suchen wollte ich es einfach versuchen, weil sich bei ALL THAT REMAINS nichts getan hat. Dann hat Howard den Job bekommen, der wurde dann aber krank und sie riefen mich an, um die Lücke zu schließen. Also bin ich ins Flugzeug gesprungen… Es war wirklich cool meinen Freuden auszuhelfen.




Glaubst du, dass es ALL THAT REMAINS in dieser Form überhaupt geben würde, wenn du damals den Job bekommen hättest?


Nein, ALL THAT REMAINS würde nicht mehr existieren. Weißt du, es ist meine Band und ich glaube nicht, dass ich genug Zeit gehabt hätte, beide Bands voranzutreiben.


Ich habe gesehen, dass du fast täglich deinen Facebook-Status updatest, nicht nur mit ALL THAT REMAINS-News. Wie wichtig ist es für dich mit den Leuten da draußen in Kontakt zu bleiben? Ich finde es ja gut, dass du wirklich fast jede Frage und Kommentar beantwortest…


Ich beantworte nicht jede Frage, aber viele und ich interagiere mit einen Haufen Sachen. Bei meiner Facebook-Seite geht es ja um mich. Ich veröffentliche da nicht nur Sachen, die mit ALL THAT REMAINS zu tun haben – wir haben eine eigene Seite für Shows und solche Sachen. Meine Seite ist persönlich. Ich fühle mich einfach verpflichtet, wenn ich irgendetwas sage und jemand fragt mich dann darüber, dass ich antworte, spreche und interagiere. Ich finde das einfach cool. Und ich bin nicht so ein Fake-Rockstar, der Nachrichten über seinen Marketing-Manager verschickt. Ich möchte mir auch keine Gedanken darüber machen, ob es jetzt okay ist wenn ich das und das sage… Es ist meine verschissene Seite und da kann ich sagen was ich will.


Und was können wir von der heutigen Show erwarten?


Tja, es ist ein sehr heißer Tag und es wird eine ziemlich verschwitzte Show werden. Leute werden herumhüften und die Show genießen. Und wir werden auf die Bühne gehen und unser Bestes geben. Wir hatten bisher immer gute Shows am Nova Rock, also wird es heute auch wieder großartig werden.


Ich freue mich schon darauf. Wie schaut es aus mit einer Tour nach der Festivalsaison? Werden wir euch heuer noch mal in Europa erleben dürfen?


Jetzt gehen wir mal nach Hause und planen dann für den Herbst. Aber ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob wir nach Europa zurückkommen oder Shows in den US spielen. Das wirst du dann im Herbst sehen, aber wir werden definitiv auf Tour sein.

How are you doing today and how is the festival season going on so far?


It´s the last day, the last show. So it´s been cool, we are here now for about two weeks. We did Rock In Park, Sweden Rock, Download... we don´t come over here so much. Last time was two years ago, so it´s cool to come back and kind of look how many people are still with usa.


I´m really looking forward to the show today, i never had the chance to see you before – don´t know why, but didn´t happen so far.. but first let us talk about your new record “The Order Of Things”. What was the idea of the title and what are the lyrics about?


Well, the record have a lot of different topics, it´s not an overall concept record. The title is kind of like... i mean there is so much out of control in your life. About 90% what happens in your life, you can´t control. The only thing you can control about that part in your life is how you react to that. The other 10% you can control. It´s about that point in your life you accept that you can´t control all things and so you go ahead and make sure that my reaction to it doesn´t make it worse. It´s kind of welcome it as this is the way it works – this is “The Order Of Things”.


To talk anyway about the lyrics, I will pick two songs. The first one is “This Won´t Probably Won´t End Well” – what do will not end well?


Everybode had some point in his life, when he was like, “this is probably a terrible fucking idea, but I do it anyway”. It´s like, “hold my beer and watch this”! I think most people can relate to. It’s like it probably won´t work out so good, but i´m gonna try it.


And what do you wan´t to say with “Trve Cvlt Metal”?


Ah thats a straight out calling the Metal Scene for being idiots. (laughs)
Because you know, the more types of metal you listen, you see it more. You can see it in all kinds of metal, especially it goes more underground. People who listen to something, become less accepting of other style. Then it´s like, “that’s not true metal”, “that wasn´t written in Norway, so it´s not true...” or “you didn´t call the record at night when the full moon was out, so it´s not true”. It´s like the attitude of, “it´s not good enough because me and my five friends don´t think it’s good.” A really narrow perspective how metal has to be.
So: fuck you, i listen to whatever I want.


On every record you changed your direction a little bit, so no record sounds like the one before. So “The Order Of Things” is for me the most catchy and modern record of ALL THAT REMAINS.


Thank you. Yeah, me and Josh where working on focussing on the lyrics and that stuff. That was our mainfocus, to really caught the listener and grab their attention. I personally like short songs that come to the point and stay in my mind really quick. That´s the thing I want to hear.


I´m sure you will reach many new fans with this one...


I hope so.


...but what do you think about the old fans. There are always people morning around about some stuff like you use less scream, some songs are not hard enough and so on?


People say that, yes, but in my opinion, people who say that are actually not listen to the whole record. People love to say, especially about us, “you are not heavy anymore”, which is heavily false, that is an incorrect statement. Because, they don´t listen to the whole record. You can´t say that there are no heavy songs on this record or no heavy song on “A War You Cannot” win or “For We Are Many”. If you be honest, people say that because they only hear the singles. So i think it´s a mischaracterisation, coming from ignorance.


So I guess, you don´t think about things like you have to much or less screams on a record, but use the style that fits best on the songs...


It´s alway about what fits best. There is a song in this record called “No Knock”. When we wrote the song, before we had lyrics, Jeanne came up with the title “Alice In Chains” because the riff felt like a ALICE IN CHAINS song. So we wanted to write vocal lines that sound a little bit like this band, but we couldn’t bring it together. It didn´t sound right, so we said, “ok it´s a heavy song, why not just scream?” And that’s just the way we do everything. If it doesn´t come together right we maybe change the direction completely and fortunately we are a band that has that ability. We wanted to sound something like this, but if it´s not working, we put it in a different angle and so the sound become different.


Do you realize differences to the US when you are in Europe? I mean the crowd, but also the success...is it harder for you over here?


Yeah it´s definitely harder because Europe is far away. I mean it´s incredibly expensive to come over here. So for us to come over here and tour is basically more cost than you can earn. The flights are very expensive, the crew and everything. Compared to the US, over there it´s much easier. We stayed more in the US so we had more success and we are on radio in the US and that stuff. It´s for us a much better for us.


So it´s cool that you have the chance to visit us now and then, so we have the chance to see you live.


We try to as much as we can.


You had some lineup changes in the beginning but since 2007 the lineup is steady. So how is the chemistry in the band?


Good. You know, when you try to get a band started and make a name for yourself, many bands have lineup-changes. You have to leave your home, maybe quit your job to go on tour and you still have bills at home. Then you have to turn the band in how you want to sound it and financially liable. And 2007 was the year it kind of came together.


You toured two times as singer with KILLSWITCH ENGAGE and you auditioned in 2002 for the position when Jesse Leach left. What happened back then and how was it to be on tour with the guys?


In 2002 I auditioned, because ALL THAT REMAINS was barely a band. We had one record out and we kicked our guitar play out of the band and our drummer broke his arm, so we couldn´t do anything for at least two months. When I found out KSE is searching for a singer I wanted to try and see, because ALL THAT REMAINS wasn´t doing anything. Then Howard got the job, but when Howard got an issue, they called me to fill inn. So I jumped on a plane... it was cool to help my friends out.


Do you think ALL THAT REMAINS would exist in this way if you got the job back then?


No, ALL THAT REMAINS would not exist anymore. I mean, it´s my band, and I don´t think that i had enough time to do two bands


I saw, you update your Facebook-account almost every day, not only with ALL THAT REMAINS stuff. How important is it for you to stay in contact with the people out there? I think it´s cool, because you answer almost every question and comment...


I don´t answer every question, but a lot of and I interact with lots of stuff. I mean my Facebook-Page is about me. I don´t put only stuff that relates to ALL THAT REMAINS there – we have another Page for shows and that stuff. My Page is personal. I feel obligated, if i´m gonna say something and someone asks me about that, I feel I have to answer, talk and interact and that stuff. That is cool and I am not the guy who wants to be the fake-rockstar who sends messages through his marketing-manager. I don´t wanna think about, is it okay if I say that... it´s my fucking page, so I can say what I think.


And what can we expect from the show today?


Well, it´s a hot day and it´s gonna be a lot of sweaty. People will jump around and I hope they enjoy the show. We go out there and give our best. We had good shows at Nova Rock, so it will be cool today for sure.


I´m looking forward to it. What about another tour after the festival season? Will we see you again in Europe this year?


Right now we´re going home and we plan stuff for fall, but I´m not sure if we come back to Europe or playing shows in the US. You will see in fall, but we definitely will be on tour.
