Im Rahmen ihrer Europatour hatten wir die Gelegenheit mit dem Bassisten Sami Hinkka der Finnischen Folk Metal Band ENSIFERUM zu sprechen und es war eine sehr amüsante Unterhaltung.




Hallo! Schön, dich hier in Wien zu treffen!
Wie geht es dir und wie war die Tour bisher?


Mir geht es ganz gut und die Tour war wirklich gut. Wir sind erst seit einer Woche unterwegs. Wir hatten davor Shows in Finnland und seit wir nach Mitteleuropa gekommen sind, war jede Show wirklich gut, für die gestrige in Budapest mussten ein einen größeren Veranstaltungsort wechseln und die heutige Show war bereits im Vorfeld ausverkauft, also ist es wirklich super. Es ist eine wirklich eine reibungslose Tour.


Seid ihr gut befreundet mit INSOMNIUM und OMNIUM GATHERUM?


Um ehrlich zu sein, habe ich die Jungs davor nicht gekannt, habe ich wahrscheinlich schon früher in einigen Rock Bars in Helsinki gesehen, aber gestern hatten wir eine kleine Party und ich habe die Jungs besser kennen gelernt, wir sind ja noch ein paar Wochen gemeinsam unterwegs und ich bin sicher, dass wir nach dieser Tour alle gute Freunde sein werden.


Wer hat entschieden, dass sie mit euch auf Tour gehen?


Dies war etwas, das wir wollten. Es gab nur wenige Optionen, aber das ist das perfekte Line-Up, das ist genau das, was wir wollten. Wir wollten eine Tour mit einem sehr starken Package, einem interessanten Package und nicht nur Bands aus dem gleichen Genre. Wir haben viele Male so gemacht und das ist eine Win-Win-Situation für uns alle. Jede Band ist anders aber es ist etwas ähnlich Melodisches darin. Jeden Abend gibt es Fans, die nur OMNIUM GATHERUM oder nur INSOMNIUM sehen wollen, auf diese Art und Weise können die Fans ihre Band finden und wie du weißt sollte es auch so sein. Wenn du zu einer Show mit vier, fünf Bands aus dem gleichen Genre gehst, wirst du wahrscheinlich nicht alle Bands kennen und das ist ein guter Weg, um eine neue Band zu entdecken. Wichtig für uns war, eine gute Live-Band zu haben, denn wir wollten einen wirklich energiegeladenen Abend. Ich habe manchmal bei den anderen Bands zugeschaut und sie machen wirklich einen guten Job, Man weiß, dass das Gefühl als Headliner ein anderes ist, als das wenn man eine Support-Band in Nordamerika ist. In dem Fall sollte man mit der Einstellung auf die Bühne gehen, dem Headliner in den Arsch treten zu wollen, das ist die Sache die eine Support-Band macht, sie steigern das Limit für den Headliner - und sie müssen ihr Bestes geben und jeden Abend 100 Prozent abliefern. Und die Jungs haben hervorragende Arbeit geleistet.


ENSIFERUM feiert in diesem Jahr 20-jähriges Jubiläum! Habt ihr etwas Besonderes geplant?


Wir hatten viele Pläne, aber die Realität ist, dass wir ein neues Album produziert haben. Es wird eine Europa-Tour, ein Nordamerika-Tour, die Festival-Saison, einige weitere Touren geben und dann machen wir einige kurze Touren in bestimmten Gebieten, so wie im letzten Jahr in Frankreich, da gab es sieben Shows nur in Frankreich. Das ist eine wirklich gute Möglichkeit zum Aufbau einer Fangemeinde auch in die kleineren Städte zu gehen, wir haben auch junge Fans und für die ist es nicht einfach, in die großen Städte zu reisen, so können sie uns dann doch sehen.
So und um deine Frage zu beantworten, es gibt Pläne für eine DVD, aber die Zeit vergeht viel zu schnell, und in diesem Jahr konzentrieren wir uns darauf unser Album "One Man Army" zu promoten, aber wir hatten ein Treffen mit Metal Blade, unserem neuen Label und die waren so nett und gaben uns das Okay für die neue DVD. Seit Jahren haben wir Tonnen von Material gesammelt, wir haben VHS-Kassetten vom Beginn unserer Band, eine von unserer allerersten Show aus dem Jahr 1996, und viele coole Sachen von allen Touren und es war so schade, dass wir sie nicht veröffentlichen konnten. Jeder sagte uns, wir sollen keine DVD machen, aber jetzt haben wir einen Deal mit Metal Blade - also lasst es uns tun. Wir müssen nur eine Menge Zeit finden, um all die Videos und Materialien zu bearbeiten.


Ihr habt ein neues Album veröffentlicht "One Man Army", was war die Idee hinter dem Titel?


Wir wollten den Titel eines Songs verwenden und es gab ein paar verschiedene Möglichkeiten. Es ist wirklich schwer einen Album-Titel zu finden, es ist noch härter als den Titel für einen Song zu finden. Es gab schon gewisse Ideen für das Album-Cover und dann machte es "klick", als der Titel des Songs "One Man Army" entstand und alles war ganz anders. Es hat sich verändert und dann merkten wir dass das Album-Cover passend sein könnte. So ging alles seinen natürlichen Weg.




Wo findet ihr die Inspiration für eure Songs?


Markus Toivonen war der Hauptproduzent und ich weiß nicht, woher er die Ideen bekommt, er hört viel Folk Musik, und progressive Sachen, klassisches Zeug, aber die meisten Ideen sagt er, bekommt er, wenn er nur zu Hause sitzt, fernsieht und nichts tut und an nichts denkt. Er denkt oft "Oh, das hört sich gut an." Und dann nimmt er es vielleicht auf, bringt es mit in den Proberaum und dann beginnen wir es zu einen Song zu arrangieren. Die Ideen für die Texte kommen aus dem täglichen Leben. Ich habe eine Menge Texte zu diesem Album geschrieben, denn ich lese viel, ich mag gute Filme und Dokumentationen und natürlich ist skandinavische Mythologie eines der starken Elemente dabei, aber die erste Idee kam aus dem wirklichen Leben.


Wie lange habt ihr an diesem Album gearbeitet?


Recht lang, wir sind wirklich langsame Komponisten. Es gibt Songs und Teile, an denen wir gearbeitet haben, noch bevor das letzte Album "Unsung Heroes" erschienen ist, aber die waren noch nicht fertig, so haben wir damit weiter gemacht und weiter daran gearbeitet. Weißt du, es dauert eine lange Zeit, aber das Schöne ist, dass wir immer Material haben. Wir waren noch nie in der Situation, dass wir alles, was wir hatten, verwendet hatten und auch jetzt haben wir Tonnen von Ideen für das nächste Album.


Was ist das Wichtigste für euch wenn ihr neue Songs schreibt?


Gute Melodien! Denn das ist der Kern der Musik von ENSIFERUM. Es beginnt alles mit der melodischen Folk-Musik, und dann kombinieren wir sie mit Metal, und das ist dann das mit dem alles beginnt. Es ist auf jeden Fall die Art von Musik, die wir alle gerne machen.


Wer ist die Sängerin bei "Neito Pohjolan" und warum habt ihr euch entschieden, dieses Lied in das Album aufzunehmen?


Das ist Netta Skog, die hier am anderen Tisch sitzt. Sie stammt von TURISAS wo sie Akkordeon spielt und sie ist jetzt als Ersatz für unsere Keyboarderin Emmy, die nicht auf dieser Tour dabei sein kann, und so ist Netta dabei und spielt Akkordeon.


Was bedeutet dieses Lied?


Es geht eigentlich um ein Mädchen aus dem Norden, aber ich möchte nicht so ausführlich den Text erklären, ich möchte, dass jeder die Freiheit hat, hinein zu interpretieren, was er will. Wortwörtlich dreht sich alles um die wandernde Dame aus dem Norden.
Jeder Song für sich erzählt eine Geschichte, wir machen nicht nur zehn Songs, die sich so ziemlich ähnlich anhören. Ich weiß, dass einige Leute diese Vielfalt zu groß finden, aber für uns, die wir sehr unterschiedliche Arten von Musik mögen und vieles ausprobieren wollen ist es so, dass wir gerne neue Sachen versuchen um damit bessere Musiker zu werden.


Wie wichtig ist Ihr Heimatland Finnland für dich und eure Musik?


Natürlich ist es unsere Heimat, der Ort und die Kultur in der wir aufgewachsen sind - natürlich es ist wichtig. Du kennst die finnische Schlager-Musik, das ist natürlich etwas, das wir zu hören bekamen, als wir Kinder waren und mein Vater hat Schlagzeug gespielt seit er zwölf Jahre war und er spielte Schlager-Musik und ich auch mit ihm. Weißt du, in meinen frühen 20er Jahren habe ich auf Hochzeiten und so weiter gespielt. Natürlich sind diese Melodien nun in unserem Rückgrat, sie sind einfach in uns und ich denke, man kann es in der ENSIFERUM-Musik auch hören.




Das Album trägt den Namen "One Man Army" aber ihr seid eine "Vier-Mann-Armee mit einer Dame"! Wie ist es für Emmy die einzige Frau in der Band zu sein?


Sie macht das tatsächlich sehr gut, sie ist eine unglaubliche Person. Manchmal fühle ich, dass sie die größten Bälle in der Band hat, klagt sie niemals auch wenn die Umstände nicht so gut sind, weder über das kalte Wasser in den Duschen - falls Duschen vorhanden sind - oder über Müll und Schmutz und wir erzählen oft schlechte Witze aber sie ist immer gut gelaunt und wir sehen sie nie als Prinzessin, sie ist einer der Jungs. Das Gleiche gilt auch für Netta, die jetzt mit uns unterwegs ist.


Wofür stehen die schwarzen Streifen in euren Gesichtern?


Ich weiß nicht, die Jungs haben das schon gemacht, bevor ich vor zehn Jahren in die Band eingestiegen bin. Ich denke, es ist nur eine Art Ritual vor der Show, das den Dämon aus uns herausholt. Es ist nur eines von diesen Ritualen. Wir sind nicht wie eine Bier trinkende Band, und wir mögen es Dinge richtig zu machen, wir könnten nicht singend in einen Kampf ziehen, wenn wir in einem Anzug auf der Bühne stehen. Es ist eine Sache, um in Stimmung zu kommen.


Warum schaust du immer so böse drein auf der Bühne?


(lacht) Für mich liegt das daran, weil unsere Songs ziemlich aggressiv sind und für mich ist Musik etwas sehr Emotionales und die Reaktion vom Publikum zu bekommen, gibt mir viel Energie. Aber keine Angst, ich beiße nicht!

Warum habt ihr euch entscheiden, Kilts auf der Bühne tragen?


Es hat eigentlich schon vor langer Zeit begonnen. Als ich in die Band kam, war ich wirklich mollig und ich trug eine Lederhose und hab mir wirklich meinen Arsch abgeschwitzt, und bei der nächsten Tour habe ich mir einen Kilt zugelegt, und es war wie "Ja, ich habe eine Klimaanlage hier!" (lacht)


Ihr werdet auf mehreren Festivals in diesem Jahr spielen. Welches Festival mögt ihr am liebsten?


Unmöglich zu sagen, es gibt so viele gute Festivals in Europa und jede Festival-Saison ist sehr einzigartig. Aber Wacken hat einen wirklich besonderen Platz in unseren Herzen und es wäre cool, wieder dorthin zu gehen.


Ihr werdet auch eine große Tour durch die USA mit KORPIKLAANI und TROLLFEST machen. Welche Erwartungen habt ihr an diese Tour?


Die Erwartungen sind sehr hoch. Es wird wirklich schön werden, eine Tour mit diesem starken Package zu machen. KORPIKLAANI ist eine ausgezeichnete Band, sie sind mehr folkig, aber wir verstehen uns wirklich gut und TROLLFEST ist absolut köstlich und so sind die Erwartungen sehr hoch.


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Viel touren!

Hello! Nice to meet you here in Vienna!
How are you and how was the tour until yet?


I´m doing just fine, the tour has been really good. So far it´s we were going one week. We did shows in Finland before and now we came to central Europe, every show has been really good, yesterdays show in Budapest we had to upgrade the venue, and todays show is sold out in advance, so it´s going really well. It´s been a really smooth tour.


Are you good friends with INSOMNIUM and OMNIUM GATHERUM?


To be honest, I didn’t knew the guys before, I have probably seen then in some rock bars in Helsinki, but yesterday we had a small party and I get to know the guys better, and we still have a few weeks to go, so I´m sure after this tour we all will be good friends.


Who decided, that they will go on tour with you?


This was something that we wanted, there were like few options, but this is the perfect line up, this is exactly what we wanted. We wanted to do a tour with a really strong package, interesting package, not just bands from the same genre. We have done that so many times and this is a win-win-situation for all of us. Each band is different but there is something similar melodic inside. Every night there are fans who want to see only OMNIUM GATHERUM, or only INSOMNIUM, so this way the fans can find your band, like you know, it should be. If you go to a show with four, five bands from the same genre, you probably don’t know all the bands, and this is a good way to find a new band. Important for us was to have a good live band, I want to have a really energetic evening. I checked out the other bands sometimes and they do a really good job. You know the feeling as a headliner is another one, is another as to be a support band in North America. There you should go on stage with the attitude, you should kick the headliners ass, that´s the thing a support band is doing, the set the limit for the headliner – they have to do their best and to give 100 percent every night. And the guys did an excellent job.


ENSIFERUM celebrates this year 20th anniversary! Have you planned something special?


We had lot of plans, but the reality is, we produced a new album. There will be a European Tour, a North America tour, the festival season, some more touring, and then we gonna do some short tours in certain territories, like we did last year in France, there were seven shows just in France. that´s a really good way to build up a fan base and also go to the small cities, also we have young fans and it´s not easy to travel to big cities, so they can still see us then. So to answer your question, there were plans like a DVD, time just passes by way to fast, and this year we just concentrate to doing shows promoting “One Man Army”, but we just had a meeting with Metal Blade, our new label and they were kind and give the okay for the next DVD. For years, we have tons of material, we have like VHS cassettes from the beginning of the band, one of our very first show from the year 96, and lot of cool stuff from all the tours, so it´s a pity that we can´t release it. Everybody told us not to make a DVD but now we have a deal with Metal Blade - let´s do it. We just have to find a lot of time to edit all the videos and materials.


You have released a new album - "One Man Army" - what was the idea behind the title?


We wanted to use the title of a song, there were a few options, it is really hard to come on with an album title, it´s even harder than the title for a song. There were certain ideas for the album-cover already, and things just flicked when the title of the song "One Man Army" was on the origin, it was totally different. It changed and then we realized the cover for the album could be like this. It went really natural.


Where do you find the inspiration for the songs?


Markus Toivonen was the main producer, I don’t know where he gets the ideas, he listens to a lot of folk music, and progressive stuff, classical stuff, but I know most of the ideas he gets when he´s just sitting home and watching TV, and do nothing about anything. He often thinks “Oh that sounded good”. And then he maybe records it, brings it to rehearsal room and then we start arranging it to a song. The ideas for the lyrics come from real life, I wrote a lot of lyrics for this album, because I read a lot, I like movies and good documentaries, of course the Scandinavian mythology is one of the strong elements there, but the first idea came from real life.


How long did you work at this album?


Quite long, we are really slow composers. There are songs and parts that we worked on even before the preview album “Unsung Heroes”, but they were not ready, so we keep doing, keep working on it, you know, it takes a lot of time, but the beauty is that we always have material, we were never in the situation that we used everything we had, so now we have tons of ideas for the next album.


What is the most important for you if you write new songs?


Good melodies! Because that´s the core of ENSIFERUM music. It all started to have the melodic folk music, and then we combined it with metal, and that´s when it all started. It´s definitely that kind of music we all like to do.


Who is the vocalist at "Neito Pohjolan" and why did you decide to put this song into the album?


That´s Netta Skog, sitting at the end of there. She has to play accordion in TURISAS, and she´s now stand in for our keyboard player Emmy that cannot be on this tour, and Netta is playing accordion.


What means this song?


It actually is like a maiden of the north, but I don’t want to explain the lyrics too much, I want everyone to have the freedom to interpret what he wants. Literally it´s all about the wanderer lady who´s from the north.
Each song tells a story of its own, we not just do ten songs that sounds just pretty much the same, I know some people might find this diversity too much, but for us, who like very different kinds of music, and we want to explore, and we try new stuff and become better musicians.


How important is your home country Finland for you and your music?


Of course its home, the place and the culture where we grew up, of course it´s important. You know the Finnish Schlager-music, of course that´s something we had to listen to when we were kids, and my father, he has played drums since he was 12, and he played Schlager-music, and I played also with him. You know, in my early 20s, I played on weddings and so on. Of course those melodies are in our spine, it´s in us and I think you can hear it in ENSIFERUM-music.


The album is named "One Man Army" but you are a "Four Man Army with a lady"! How is it for Emmy to be the only woman in your band?


She actually takes this really well, she´s an incredible person. Sometimes I feel like, she has the biggest balls in the band, she never complains even tough the circumstances are not so good, might the cold water in the showers, if there´s showers at all, and you know, wasting, and we tell bad jokes and she´s always there in a good mood, and we never look at here as a princess, she´s one of the guys. The same with Netta who is now with us.


What stand the black stripes in your faces for?


I don’t know, the guys have done it before I even joined the band 10 years ago. I think it´s just a really kind of ritual before the show, it gets your demon out of you. It´s just one of those rituals. We are not like a beer drinking band, and we like to do things properly, we couldn’t sing about get in a battle, if we were standing there in a suit. It´s a thing to get in the mood.


Why are you always looking so evil on stage?


(laughs)For me, it´s because our songs are pretty aggressive, and for me, music is something very emotional, and getting the reaction from audience, gives me lots of energy. But don’t be scared, I won´t bite!

Why do you decide to wear kilts on stage?


It actually started a long time ago. When I joined the band, I was really chubby and I wore leather pants and was really sweating my ass on, and at the next tour I got myself a kilt, and it was like yeah, I got an air condition here! (laughs)


You will play on several festivals this year. What is the festival you like most?


Impossible to say, there are so many good festivals in Europe, and every festival season is very unique but Wacken has a really special place in our heart, so it would be cool to go back there.


You will go also to a big tour through the USA with KORPIKLAANI and TROLLFEST. What are your expectations to this tour?


Expectations are really high. It´s gonna be really nice to do a tour with this strong package, KORPIKLAANI is an excellent band, its more folkish, they kind of feel each other is really well and TROLLFEST is absolutely hilarious, so the expectations are very high.


What are your plans for the future?


Lots of touring!
