Anlässlich ihres Konzertes in Wien, im Zuge ihrer Tour mit MELECHESH, KEEP OF KALESSIN und EMBRYO, hatten wir die Gelegenheit mit Gitarrist Adam Zaars und Drummer Jakob Ljungberg von der Schwedischen Progressive Death/Black Metal TRIBULATION zu sprechen, die kürzlich mit „Children Of The Night“ ein umjubeltes Album veröffentlicht hat.

Hallo! Schön, euch hier in Wien zu treffen! Wie geht es euch?


Adam: Mir geht eigentlich sehr gut, wir sind ziemlich müde nach der Tour, aber es ist alles gut.

Jakob: Das Gleiche.




Kennt ihr Österreich ein wenig?


Adam: Ich bin tatsächlich oft hier gewesen. Ich habe Familie hier in Feldkirch, da lebt die Schwester meiner Freundin und wir haben auch schon hier in diesem Club gespielt.


Wie war die Tour für euch?


Adam: Gut, sie ist viel kleiner als die Touren die wir zuvor als Support-Band gemacht haben, aber es ist schon in Ordnung.

Jakob: Großartig, es ist irgendwie ein bisschen schwierig, speziell als zweite Band, du kannst keinen Soundcheck machen bevor du auf Bühne gehst. Wir haben nur 15 Minuten zur Vorbereitung, und dann beginnst du schon mit der Show, aber es war eine gute Tour.

Adam: Die bisherigen Touren haben wir als Vorband mit WATAIN, BEHEMOTH und CANNIBAL CORPSE gemacht und es waren größere Touren, aber wir konnten nur 30 Minuten Spielzeit, und bei dieser Tour spielen wir 45 Minuten, das ist ein tatsächlich ziemlich großer Unterschied und das ist wirklich gut.


Wie war der Kontakt mit den anderen Bands?


Adam: Gut, sehr gut. Es gab Bands aus verschiedenen Ländern, aber es war gut.


Ist es schwierig, für Wochen in so engem Kontakt mit anderen Bands zu sein?


Adam: Ja, ist es! Es ist in Ordnung, aber manchmal möchte man weglaufen und sich einen Tag allein gönnen, aber man kann nicht. Aber wir müssen mit den Möglichkeiten abfinden, die wir haben. Wir haben lange Spaziergänge gemacht und in der Schweiz hatten wir die Möglichkeit in den Bergen zu wandern. Wenn man sich selbst beschäftigt dann ist es in Ordnung. Es ist sehr bequem und diese Tourbusse sind fantastisch, wenn man es mit Touren in einem Van vergleicht, ist es wirklich luxuriös.


Euer neues Album "The Children Of The Night" ist sehr erfolgreich. Heutzutage kennt euch fast jeder wegen der tollen Bewertungen. Es wurde doch während der aktuellen Tour veröffentlicht. Habt ihr bemerkt, dass mehr Menschen bei euren Shows waren nach dem Release?


Adam: Nein, denn dies ist die erste Tour, die wir nach der Veröffentlichung gemacht haben!


Es war nach der Veröffentlichung?


Adam: Ja! Aber viele unserer Fans sind nicht zu diesen Shows gekommen, weil sie die anderen Bands nicht sehen wollen. Aber wir haben es wirklich bemerkt, wir haben vor der Tour zwei Shows in Schweden gespielt und es war bei beiden Shows so. Also ja, wir wissen es, aber diese Tour ist nicht wirklich der Beweis für uns. Aber es ist natürlich auf der Tour passiert, dass manche Leute nur wegen uns gekommen sind, aber wir haben auch gehört, dass manche nicht den vollen Preis zahlen wollten, nur um uns zu sehen.


Glaubt ihr, dass dieses Album euer Leben als Musiker verändern wird?


Adam: Nun, alles was man macht, verändert das Leben. Und alle Alben die wir zuvor gemacht haben, haben unser Leben verändert. Es könnte aber nun eine größere Veränderung geben. Das ist die Sache mit diesem Album, es ist gut aufgenommen und was auch anders ist, dass wir nun bei einem größeren Label sind - das ist eine große Veränderung, denn jetzt haben Menschen von uns gehört, die uns vorher nicht gekannt haben.




Was war die Idee hinter diesem Album?


Adam: Wir hatten keine Idee! Es ist nur die Fortsetzung dessen, was wir bisher gemacht haben. Wir haben einfach getan, was wir immer tun, wir machen Musik, machen ein neues Album, und das war nicht wirklich geplant, wir wollten einfach nur ein neues Album machen und dann hat alles ineinander gegriffen.


Wo findet ihr die Inspiration für eure Songs?


Adam: Überall! Das mag wie ein Klischee klingen, aber es ist wahr, sie kann von einem Ausgeh-Abend kommen, aus einem Film, von einer Wanderung.

Jakob: Sie kann von allem kommen und die ganze Erfahrung schlägt sich in der Musik nieder.

Adam: Du weißt nie wirklich, wann es geschehen wird, das ist das Schöne daran. Es gibt Zeiten im Leben, in denen nichts passiert und dann ganz plötzlich ist die Inspiration da und man weiß wirklich nicht, warum oder wann! Aber wenn sie da ist, dann muss man sie auch verarbeiten. Aber manchmal macht man es nicht und das ist eine Schande.


Mögt ihr geistliche Musik - wegen der Orgel-Klänge in euren Songs?


Adam: Nun, Ich mag Kirchenmusik natürlich. Aber ich denke, die Orgelklänge sind mehr Rock-basiert.

Jakob: Sie kommen mehr von DEEP PURPLE, als von der Kirche.

Adam: Ich denke, dass wir sie mehr in einem sakralen Kontext verwenden, als das bei DEEP PURPLE der Fall ist, bei uns wird es mehr zu einer Kirchenorgel. Aber Kirchenmusik kann gut sein, es hängt aber davon ab welche Art von Kirchenmusik man meint .


Seid ihr auch im Privatleben "Kinder der Nacht"?


Adam: Ja, ich würde sagen, ich zumindest bin eines. Aber wir sind vier verschiedene Menschen in der Band, aber dies der gesammelten Output, der von uns allen kommt.


Was ist so faszinierend für euch an Themen wie Horror und Angst?


Adam: Angst ist nicht wirklich ein interessantes Thema für mich, man kann sie nur überwinden aber man kann Angst nicht sehen, sie ist nur ein Hindernis. Doch die Faszination für Horror, dafür gibt es eine Schicht in der populären Kultur. In Filmen im Allgemeinen, wie alles was von "Dracula" zu "Freitag der 13." reicht. Aber ich kümmere mich nicht um die populäre Kultur, für mich persönlich ist es ein Gefühl. Aber das ist nicht wirklich das, was wir in der Musik anstreben.
Das Grauen in der Musik von TRIBULATION lebt wirklich in der Musik selbst und das schafft den Horror. Das ist natürlich auch mit Bildern verbunden und wir wollen eine gewisse Atmosphäre schaffen. Ich denke, die Texte haben nichts mit Horrorfilmen zu tun, aber es gibt eine gewisse Atmosphäre, die wir schon früh in der Geschichte fanden, in Filmen wie "Nosferatu" und das ist es, was wir versuchen, in der Musik zu erfassen.
Es ist so ziemlich das gleiche, am Anfang unseres Bestehens haben wir diese Elemente eingearbeitet in die Texte, aber heutzutage ist das Grauen in der Musik.


Besucht ihr gerne Geisterbahnen oder Horror-Häuser in Freizeitparks?


Adam: Ich tue es mit meinem Sohn (lacht)! Das ist etwas, das mit der populären Kultur des Horrors zu tun hat, ich mag das auch!




Wie waren die ersten zehn Jahre von TRIBULATION? Was hielt die Band zusammen?


Adam: Die Überzeugung die wir hatten, hat uns sehr geholfen. Es ist eine langsame Karriere. Ich denke, wir haben das erste Album 2007 aufgenommen und erst im Jahr 2009 veröffentlicht und das zweite kam im Jahr 2013, zwischen 2007 und 2013 ist also eine große Lücke. Aber während dieser Zeit hat jeder von uns gewusst, dass TRIBULATION das Wichtigste für uns ist. Es ist, weil wir immer wussten, dass wir weitermachen wollen und auch die Chemie in der Band stimmt. Und das ist es, was uns zusammengehalten hat - es ist eine lange, langsame Karriere. Wir waren immer dort wo wir sein wollten, aber wir wussten, dass wir eines Tages größer werden wollten, und wir wollen Live-Shows machen, und ich denke, das ist der Grund, warum wir das alles machen. Wir werden Alben aufnehmen und veröffentlichen, aber es läuft letztendlich alles bei den Live-Shows zusammen. Und hoffentlich werden wir auch in der Zukunft immer dort sein, wo wir sein wollen.


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Adam: Nun ist der Sommer ganz nahe, ab morgen werden wir bei unseren ersten Festivals spielen, dann werden wir nach Großbritannien und nach Schweden reisen und wir werden am Tons of Rocks in Norwegen spielen, dann werden wir in Frankreich am Hellfest spielen, das ist dann das Größte, denke ich. Und es kommt noch etwas, aber das können wir noch nicht verkünden. Wir werden dann hoffentlich eine weitere Tour machen, aber dazu kann ich jetzt auch noch nichts sagen. Im September und Oktober werden wir nach Japan fliegen und dann für ein weiteres Jahr touren. Es gibt also eine Menge Pläne für die Zukunft.


Und schließlich einige letzte Worte an eure Fans?


Adam: Die schwierigste Frage...

Hello! Nice to meet you here in Vienna! How are you?


Adam: I´m very good actually, we are quite tired after the touring, but it´s all good.

Jakob: The same.


Do you know Austria a little bit?


Adam: I have been here quite lot actually. I have family here, in Feldkirch, my girlfriend´s sister lives there, and we played here before in this club.


How was the tour for you?


Adam: Good, it´s a lot smaller than the tours we have done previously as support-band, but it´s been okay!

Jakob: Great, it´s kinda hard to be, specially as second band, you don’t get soundcheck, you go on stage, have 15 minutes to prepare and then you gonna do the show, but it´s been a good tour.

Adam: The previous tours we have done as a support band with WATAIN, BEHEMOTH and CANNIBAL CORPSE were bigger tours, but we only been able to play 30 minutes, and at this tour we are playing 45 Minutes, so it´s quite a big difference actually, and that´s been really good.


How was the contact with the other bands?


Adam: Fine, very good. There were bands from different countries but it was good.


Is it difficult to be in such close contact with other bands for weeks?


Adam: Yes, it is! It´s fine, but sometimes you want to run away and spend a day for yourself, but you can´t, but we have to deal with it in the ways you can. We were going for long walks, and in Switzerland in the mountains we have been able to hike. When you keep yourself busy it´s fine. It´s very comfortable at all because these tourbuses are fantastic when you compare it to touring in a van, it´s a luxury as well.


Your new album “The Children Of The Night” is very successful. Nowadays nearly everybody knows you because of the great reviews. It was released during your actual tour. Did you notice that more people were at your shows after the release?


Adam: No, because this is the first tour, we have done after the release!

Do you think that this album will change your live as musicians?


Adam: Well everything you do changes your live, and all the albums we previously had done has changed our lives as well. It might be a bigger change this time. That´s the thing with this album, it´s well-received and the thing we are doing differently now is of course that we are at a bigger label – that is a big change because now people heard from us that have not known us before.


What was the idea behind the album?


Adam: We had no idea! It´s just the continuation of what we have done previously. We just did what we do, make music, make a new album, we don’t really plan it, it´s just we wanted to make a new album and then pieces fall into place in time.


Where do you find the inspiration for your songs?


Adam: Everywhere! That may sound like a cliché, but it´s true, it can be from a night out, from a movie, from a hike.

Jakob: It can be from everything, all the experience puts down in your music.

Adam: You never really know when it will happen, that’s the nice thing. There are times in life when nothing happens, and then it takes a turn and there is the inspiration, you don’t really know why or when, but when it´s there, it´s there and you use it. And sometimes you don’t, and that´s a shame.


Do you like sacred music - because of the organ sounds in your songs?


Adam: Well, I like church music of course. But I think the organs are more rock-based.

Jakob: They come more from DEEP PURPLE than from the church.

Adam: I think we put it in there in a more sacred context than what DEEP PURPLE did so it automatically becomes a church-organ, but church music can be good, but it depends on what type of church music you mean.


Are you also in your private life a "Children of the night"?


Adam: Yes, I would say I´m at least, I mean were a band, were four different people, but this is the collected output that comes from all of us.


What is so fascinating for you with topics like horror and fear?


Adam: Fear isn’t really an interesting topic to me, that can just overcome you, I don’t see fear, it´s just an obstacle. But the fascination with horror, there is a layer of popular culture, in movies in general, like anything from “Dracula” to “Friday the 13th”. Anything is concerning the popular culture, it´s a feeling to me personally. But that´s not really what we are aiming for in the music.
The horror in the music of TRIBULATION really lives the music itself and that creates horror. Which is of course also connected to the images, we have to create an atmosphere. I think the lyrics don’t have anything to do with horror movies, but there is a certain atmosphere in, that we found early on in the history, in movies like “Nosferatu” and that´s what we try to capture in the music.
It´s pretty much the same, but in the beginning of the band we incorporated this elements into the lyrics, but nowadays the horror is in the music.


Do you like to visit ghost trains or horror houses in amusement parks?


Adam: I do it with my son (laughs)! That is something with the popular culture of horror. I like that too!


How were the first 10 years of TRIBULATION? What held the band together?


Adam: The conviction that we had helped a lot. It´s a slow career. I think, we recorded the first album in 2007, released it in 2009, and the second came in 2013, between 2007 and 2014 is a big gap. But during that time all of us knew TRIBULATION as the main thing we were all doing. It´s because we always knew we would continue, the alchemy in the band is working, and that´s what kept us together, it´s a long, slow career. We were always where we want to be, but we knew that someday we want to grow bigger, and we wanted to do live shows, and I think that´s the reason why we are doing this. We are releasing and recording albums, but it all comes down to the live show in the end. And hopefully we will always be where we want it in the future.


What are your plans for the future?


Adam: Well the summer is quite near, tomorrow we are doing our first festival shows, then we are going to the UK and to Sweden, and will play at Tons of Rock in Norway, and then we are playing at Hellfest in France which is the biggest one I guess. And some more is coming, that we can´t announce yet. And then were hopefully doing another tour, we can´t say that now. In September and October were going to Japan, and then we continue touring for another year. So there are a lot of plans for the future.


And finally some last words to your fans?


Adam: The most difficult question!
