Anlässlich des Blastfestes in Bergen/Norwegen hatten wir die Gelegenheit mit Sänger Erik von den Schwedischen Black Metal-Ikonen WATAIN zu sprechen und er gab uns einigen Einblick in seine Sichtweite was den Black Metal betrifft, auch wenn ihn anscheinend einige Fragen ziemlich gelangweilt haben und sein Tipp an die Menschheit um ihr Leben zu verbessern auch etwas eigenwillig war. ;-)





Hallo! Schön, dich hier in Norwegen zu treffen!
Ist dies das erste Mal, dass du in Bergen bist?


Nein, es ist das fünfte Mal.


Für Festivals oder für Urlaub?


Mehr oder weniger, alles ist mit Musik in einer oder anderer Weise verbunden.


WATAIN ist eine der beliebtesten Black Metal Bands und besteht seit 17 Jahren. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Bands, sind alle Mitglieder von WATAIN seit Beginn bei der Band. Was ist der besondere Geist, der die Band zusammenhält?


Ich meine, wir trafen uns an dem Punkt in unserem Leben, als wir uns fest entschlossen haben, nicht ein geregeltes Leben zu leben und dieser Geist blieb die ganze Zeit in uns aus dem einen oder anderen Grund. Ich meine, die Band wurde natürlich immer größer und sie nahm einen immer größeren Teil unseres Lebens ein. Und an einem gewissen Punkt in unserem Leben haben wir erkannt, dass es das ist, was wir tun möchten. Es gibt keinen Weg zurück. Ich meine, wir haben eine ganz besondere Bindung, eine ganz besondere Verbindung, von der ich denke, dass sie etwas über eine reguläre Bandidee hinausgeht! Es ist eher in vielerlei Hinsicht wie Brüderlichkeit, wir alle kommen aus einer ganz kleinen Stadt und ich denke, dass spielt auch eine Rolle, warum wir schon so lange zusammenhalten. Weißt du, wir waren nicht wie die Leute aus einer oberflächlichen Stadt, die einfach eine Sache für ein Wochenende machen und dann zu etwas anderem wechseln, wir nehmen das was wir tun sehr ernst und mit sehr viel Respekt.


Eure Konzerte sind immer sehr stimmungsvoll. Wie wichtig ist Feuer für eure Shows?


Ich meine, wenn wir es benutzen, ist es natürlich sehr wichtig. Aber wir haben vielleicht bei der Hälfte der Shows die wir machen Feuer dabei, ich liebe es, auf beide Arten und Weisen aufzutreten, ich meine, es ist immer Feuer auf der Bühne – auf die eine oder andere Weise. Feuer ist nicht nur das Element zum Anfassen und verbrannt zu werden, es gibt auch andere Arten von Feuer, das innerhalb bestimmter Menschen brennt. In diesem Sinne ist Feuer sehr wichtig, und wenn man es bei einem Konzert einsetzt, ist es eine sehr chaotische Zutat - Feuer ist nicht etwas, das man steuern kann. Du kannst den Ton steuern, kannst dein Aussehen steuern, kannst deinen eigenen Körper bis zu einem bestimmten Punkt kontrollieren, aber Feuer hat ein eigenes Leben, und wenn man es in einem Konzert verwendet, wird die Umgebung sehr interessant, und ich denke es ist eine sehr faszinierende Zutat in einer Show. Ich meine, wenn man darüber nachdenkt, wie oft sagen Tausende von Menschen, die gekommen sind um eine Show zu sehen, dass sie den Anblick von Feuer nicht so oft haben? Wie oft sehen sie eine Menge Feuer zur gleichen Zeit? Nicht, so oft. Sie sehen es, wenn eine Kerze am Tisch leuchtet, oder bei einem Grillplatz im Wald, aber wie oft sind Sie eigentlich vor einer Feuerwand? Es ist nicht so oft und deshalb etwas Besonderes für die Menschen.




Hast du dich selbst je mit dem Feuer verletzt?


Ja, ja oft natürlich, dass es weh tut ist eine der elementarsten Auswirkungen von Feuer.


Was ist für dich das Wichtigste im Black Metal?


Ich glaube, das Wichtigste um Black Metal machen zu können ist, eine Bindung zu teuflischen Dingen zu haben. Du musst eine Schlange in dir haben und dazu bereit sein, sie zu nähren und ihr Kraft zu geben und sie durch dich sprechen zu lassen. Du musst einen Teufel in dir haben um Metal zu schaffen. Die meisten Menschen haben natürlich einen kleinen Teufel in sich und das ist es, warum viele Menschen von dieser Art von Musik angezogen werden, warum wir so viele Anhänger gewonnen haben. Das ist die Resonanz auf diesen kleinen teuflischen Aspekt. Aber es gibt nicht so viele Menschen, die wirklich darauf eingehen und vor dem Teufel auf die Knie gehen. Und das Wissen, dass es ein grundlegender Teil der Menschen ist, das ist etwas das man haben muss, um Metal zu machen. Diese Elemente sind von Bedeutung.


Wie beeinflusst dich deine Musik in deinem täglichen Leben?


Nun, ich meine es ist eher umgekehrt, unser tägliches Leben inspiriert unsere Musik sehr stark, und das ist mehr der Weg wie es läuft, und ich denke, das ist so wie es sein sollte. Du kannst nicht zulassen, dass dir die Musik diktiert wer du bist, aber du kannst die Musik diktieren, das ist mehr der Weg wie wir arbeiten.


Woher findest du deine Inspiration für eure Songs?


Ich weiß nicht, wie ich diese Frage beantworten soll.


Was denkst du über Religionen?


Ich bin natürlich ein sehr religiöser Mensch, denn ich bin ein Satanist. Ich habe mehr Verständnis für religiöse Menschen als für Menschen ohne Religion. Ich verstehe den religiösen Ansatz mehr, als dem Atheismus angenäherte Dinge. Ich habe Dinge gesehen, und ich erlebte Dinge, die mich erkennen ließen, dass ein religiöser Ansatz der einzige Ansatz ist, der für Menschen das Leben wertvoll macht, das ist mein fester Standpunkt. Was ich über Religion denke? Was denkst du über Politik? Was muss ich über Architektur denken? Was weiß ich über Musik? Das ist eine wirklich große Frage.




Glaubst du, dass Satanismus der bessere Weg im Leben ist?


Ich kann diese Art von Frage wirklich nicht beantworten.


Was würdest du den Menschen vorschlagen, ihr Leben zu verbessern?


Tötet euch!


Wann werdet ihr ein neues Album veröffentlichen?


Ich weiß nicht.


Wer ist der Songwriter, und ist das Teamarbeit oder nur Arbeit von einem Bandmitglied?


Es ist Teamarbeit.


Wie wichtig ist euer Heimatland Schweden für euch?


Überhaupt nicht.


Könntest du überall auf der Welt leben?


Ich kann. Ich mache mir keine Gedanken über Linien, die auf ein Papier gezeichnet werden und die Menschen nennen es dann eine Karte, es ist nicht so wichtig für mich, ich habe andere Dinge über die ich mir Gedanken mache.


Kennst du mein Heimatland Österreich ein wenig?


Ja, ich kenne Österreich!


Warst du nur für Konzerte da, oder auch im Urlaub?


Nein.


Wann werdet ihr wieder nach Österreich kommen?


Ich habe keine Ahnung, eigentlich beenden wir unsere Touren jetzt im Frühjahr und dem letzten Konzert, das wir in Europa machen, das wird am 25. April in Deutschland beim Kings von Black-Metal-Festival sein und danach denke ich, werden wir für eine recht lange Zeit in Europa nicht zu sehen sein.


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?

Ich werde die Treppe nach oben gehen, in ein Taxi einsteigen und ein Konzert am Blastfest heute Abend spielen.


Keine Gedanken an morgen?


Nein.


Und schließlich einige letzte Worte an eure Fans?


Es ist Zeit, mit dem Denken jetzt zu beginnen, Zeit um zu versuchen und zu verstehen und für alles offen zu sein, was kommen könnte.

Is this the first time you are in Bergen?


No, it´s the 5th time.


For festivals or for holidays?


More or less, everything has been music related in one way or another.


WATAIN is one of the most popular Black Metal Bands and exists since 17 years. In contrast to other bands, all members of WATAIN are with the band since the beginning. What is the special spirit that holds the band together?


I mean, we met at the point in our lives, when we we´re determined to, you know, not live regular lives, and that thought kind of stayed with us all the time for one reason or another. I mean, the band has of course transpired - got bigger and bigger, and it´s taking over bigger and bigger part of our lives. And at a certain point in our lives we have realised this is what we are going to do. There is no way back from this. I mean, we have a very special bond, a very special connection that I think that goes a bit beyond the regular band idea, you know. It´s more like brotherhood in many ways, we all come from a quite small town and I think that also plays a role in why we stuck together for so long. You know, were not like shallow city people that just do a thing for a weekend and then move on to something else, we take what we do very seriously and with very much respect.


Your concerts are always very atmospheric. How important is fire for your shows?


I mean, when we use it, it´s very important of course. But we, maybe we have fire on half of the shows that we do, I love doing it in both ways, I mean there is always fire on the stage and in one way or another. I mean fire is not only the element you can touch and be burned from, there are also other kinds of fire that burns within certain people. So in that sense fire is very important, and when it´s used in a concert, it´s used as a very chaotic ingredient - fire is not something you can control. You can control sound, you can control appearance, you can control your own body to a certain extend at least, but fire has a live on its own, and when you bring it into a concert, environment becomes very interesting and I think it´s a very spellbinding ingredient in a show. I mean, think about it, how often out of say one thousand people that come to see a show, how often do they look at fire? How often do they see a lot of fire at the same time? Not that often. They see it when they light a candle at the dinner table or when they make a barbecue out in the forest but how often are you actually standing in front of a wall of fire? It´s not that often, so it does something to people.


Have you ever hurt yourself with fire?


Yeah, yeah many times, one of the most elementary effects of fire is of course that it hurts.


What is for you the most important in Black Metal?


I think the most important thing that you need to create black metal is a bond to diabolical things. You have to have a serpent inside of you that you willing to nourish and give power to and let it speak through you. You need to have a devil inside of you to create metal. Most people have a little devil inside of them of course, and that´s why many people are attracted to this kind of music and that´s why we have gained so many followers. Because it´s resonates to this little devilish aspect. But there are not that many man that truly embrace that devil and that choose to knee in front of it. And that knowledge that it´s a foundational part of human being, and that´s something you need to do to perform metal – this elements are significant.


How influences your music your daily life?


Well I mean it´s more like the other way around, I think, our daily lives inspires our music very much, and that´s more the way it goes, and I think that´s how it should be. You cannot let music dictate who you are, but you can let you dictate your music, that´s more the way we work.


Where do you find your inspiration for your songs?


I don´t know how to answer that question.


What do you think about religions?


I´m a very religious person of course, since I´m a Satanist. I have more understanding for religious people than what I have for people without a religion. I understand the religious approach more than I understand atheist approached things. I have seen things and I experienced things that made me realise that a religious approach is the only approach that you can have as a human being to worth life, that´s my firmer stand point. What do I think about religion? What do you think about politics? What do I think about architecture? What do I think about music? That´s a really big question.


Do you think, Satanism is the better way in life?


I cannot really answer this kind of question.


What would you suggest the people to make their life better?


Kill themselves!


When will you release a new album?


I don´t know.


Who is the songwriter and is this teamwork or only work of one bandmember?


It´s teamwork.


How important is your home-country Sweden for you?


Not at all.


Could you live everywhere on the world?


I do. I don´t care about lines that are drawn on a paper and people call it a map, it´s not so important for me, I have other things to think about.


Do you know my home-country Austria a little bit?


Yeah, I know Austria!


You have been there for concerts, but have you been there for holiday?


No.


When will you come again to Austria?


I don´t have a clue actually, we are finishing our touring in spring now and the last concert that we are doing in Europe will be the 25th in April in Germany at the kings of black metal festival. and after that I think we will not tour in Europe for quite a long time.


What are your plans for the future?

I´m going to walk upstairs, get into a taxi and play a concert on Blastfest tonight.


No thinking about tomorrow?


No.


And finally some last words for your fans?


It´s time to start thinking know, time to start to try and understand and be open for anything that might come.
