Die Griechisch-Schwedische Combo NIGHTRAGE hatte es nicht immer leicht. Doch Mastermind Marios Iliopoulos hielt die Truppe stets zusammen und veröffentlichte einige Kracher in der mittlerweile 15 Jahre andauernden Karriere der Melodic Death Metaller. Mit neuem Sänger und neuem Elan schmiss man sich in die Arbeiten zum neuen Werk "The Puritan". Marios stand uns dazu Rede und Antwort.



Hi Marios, was tut sich bei dir so aktuell?


Wir arbeiten gerade sehr hart, geben eine Menge Interviews wegen dem neuen Album und haben bisher ein so großartiges Feedback bekommen von der Presse, den Fans und die allgemeinen Vibes sind sehr positiv. Die Leute mögen die Songs und ermutigen uns mit der Band weiterzumachen.


Euer neues Album „The Puritan“ ist veröffentlicht, wie geht’s dir nun damit?


Wir sind so stolz und glücklich mit dem ganzen Songwriting und ich glaube, dass wir da erneut ein großartiges Album vollendet haben, möglicherweise das beste bisher und ich bin richtig glücklich wo wir gerade stehen und nun ein so großartiges Label wie Despotz Records gefunden haben und auch unseren neuen Sänger Ronnie Nyman. Wir lieben das Album dafür, dass wir den typischen NIGHTRAGE Sound so rübergebracht haben ohne Kompromisse und unterstützen dieselbe musikalische Intensität und Melodie überall. Wir spielen immer Musik direkt aus unserem Herzen und wollen die Dinge nicht verkomplizieren, wir glauben an musikalische Integrität und man sieht, dass „The Puritan“ ein großartiges Beispiel dafür ist. Wir haben sehr schnelle Songs aber auch Midtempo Songs, was unseren weite Bandbreite an Einflüssen zeigt, sowie auch die Melodie eine große Rolle spielt wie wir klingen und unsere Songs komponieren, wir kombinieren gern Brutalität und Melodie in einem tollen Metal-Package und das ist für den Hörer einfach erfrischend und interessant.


Ihr hattet wieder ein paar Änderungen im Lineup. Was ist mit Johan und Olof passiert?


Olof war auf einmal verschwunden. Wir konnten ihn nicht erreichen, er antwortete nicht einmal auf E-Mails und hat sich nie wieder sehen lassen. Johan meinte, dass er keine Zeit mehr für NIGHTRAGE hat, seitdem er mit meinen Buddys GUS G und MARTY FRIEDMAN spielen wollte.


Ihr hab auch euren Sänger verloren. Warum verließ Antony die Band und wie habt ihr Ronnie Nyman gefunden?


Es stellte sich einfach heraus, dass Antony der falsche war, um in der Band zu spielen und wir verloren auch den Kontakt bzw. unsere Freundschaft so wie er seine Leidenschaft und den Fokus verlor bei NIGHTRAGE mitzumachen. Darum musste er einfach gehen und das war das Beste für beide Seiten. Wir hatten auch einige persönliche Probleme seit er einigen Ärger ins NIGHTRAGE-Camp brachte. Ronnie Nyman habe ich durch unseren Freund Jesper Strömblad gefunden und es passt einfach, weil er NIGHTRAGE liebt und versteht wo wir herkommen.


Ronnie spielt auch bei der Hardcore Band ALWAYS WAR und ich denke, dass man das auch bei seinem Stil bei NIGHTRAGE merkt. Konnte er bei euch einfach er selbst sein oder versuchte er wie ein typischer Melodic Death Metal-Sänger?


Ich denke, seinen Hardcore Background ist etwas, das zu den NIGHTRAGE Songs passt und ich denke, dass er versucht großartige Metal Hooks mit seinen Vocals zu liefern und du kannst einfach seinen Hardcore Stil an den neuen Songs hören, weil es einfach ein Teil von ihm ist und ich denke, dass er beides sehr gut kombiniert und ich bin wirklich glücklich mit der Arbeit, die er auf „The Puritan“ abgeliefert hat.
Ronnie ist sehr flexibel als Sänger. Er hat ein großartiges Charisma auf der Bühne mit einer Menge Energie und auch als Sänger hat er viel Herz und Seele und das ist auch auf „The Puritan“ offensichtlich. Es ist halt so, dass wir Ronnie diese Chance gaben bei NIGHTRAGE als Fronter zu agieren und er hat seine Position eingefordert in der Band zu sein auf der Japan und Russland Tour die wir zusammen machten. Ich finde, für mich ist dieser Typ eine Art von Held, weil er seinen Job gekündigt hat, um bei der Japan-Tour dabei zu sein. Für mich war das ein positives Signal, dass er der richtige Mann mit der richtigen Einstellung ist, um der Frontmann von NIGHTRAGE zu sein.




Wenn ich mir die Liste eurer ehemaligen und Session-Mitglieder ansehe, dann scheint es ein bisschen wie das Telefonbuch von internationalen Musikern. Wie frustrierend ist es für euch neue Mitglieder für beinahe jede Aufnahme suchen zu müssen?


Das ist eine gute Umschreibung des Ganzen (haha). Man kann schon sagen, dass wir fast so etwas wie ein Hotel sind. Aber das war der einzige Weg weiter zu machen. Wir haben diese ganze Scheißsituation durchmachen müssen, um an Leben zu bleiben und es ist nicht das Beste auf Erden, aber es ist auch nicht das Ende. Ich meine, es gibt einen Grund, warum wir diese ganzen LineUp-Veränderungen hatten und warum wir immer noch hier sind und unsere geliebte Musik spielen. Die Leute sehen immer nur die Veränderungen und nicht die musikalischen Verbindungen, es ist eigentlich sehr mitleiderregend wenn du denkst, dass ich immer versucht habe, Menschen zu helfen und sie nicht einfach fallen zu lassen. aber ich habe aus meinen eigenen Erfahrungen gelernt, dass je mehr du gibt’s, je mehr wird versucht dir etwas zu nehmen. Aber wenn ich jetzt im Nachhinein darüber nachdenke, dann bin ich nicht mehr frustriert darüber, was passiert ist. Ich war immer ziemlich wütend auf bestimmte Menschen, aber ich habe losgelassen. Es macht mir nichts mehr aus, wenn ich darüber nachdenke, was sie nicht alles versuchten, um sich selbst zu genügen. Aber im Endeffekt sind wir immer noch hier und das zeigt doch ganz deutlich die Power von NIGHTRAGE.


Aktuell supporten euch Jesper Strömblad (Gitarre) und Christojer Barkensjö (Drums) live. Warum engagiert ihr euch keinen permanenten Drummer und einen zweiten Gitarristen?


Aktuell nicht mehr, sie waren nur die Sessionmusiker für ein paar Shows und das wars, sie sind sehr beschäftigt mit ihren eigenen Bands und das passt auch so. Wir haben schon einen neuen Drummer und einen zweiten Gitarristen gefunden, werden auch die Namen ehest bald bekannt geben und die helfen uns auch bei den kommenden Shows aus. Wir hatten einfach nicht die Zeit um einen neuen Drummer und Gitarristen für das neue Album zu finden, weil die Aufnahmen einfach oberste Priorität hatten. Deshalb sind wir auch als Trio an die Arbeiten herangegangen und das hat auch wunderbar funktioniert.


Erklär uns bitte den Albumtitel „The Puritan“ und worum geht’s bei den Lyrics?


Die Lyrics und auch die kompletten Ideen für das neue Album „The Puritan“ sind sehr symbolisch und wir wollten unsere Passion für unsere geliebte Musik ausdrücken, die Möglichkeit haben, wir selbst zu sein, unsere Ziele mit Bescheidenheit zu erreichen und auch ehrlich zu sein und Musik zu bieten, die direkt von unseren Herzen kommt. Die Lyrics sind verbunden mit der Musik und das macht es einfach perfekt. Dieses Mal haben wir auf songtechnischer Seite versucht, die Essenz der menschlichen Seele zu erreichen und noch etwas tiefer zu graben. Wir behandeln sehr persönliche Themen und können damit auch jedermanns Seele berühren. Wir versuchen solche Themen in einer poetischen Art und Weise zu behandeln und lieben es, dass Fans ihre eigene Bedeutung in die Texte interpretieren und somit auch in ihr eigenes Leben. Wir finden einfach, dass die Lyrics sehr wichtig sind in Verbindung mit der Musik und legen da Wert drauf, ein paar gute Zeilen zu schreiben. Die Lyrics auf den neuen Album zeigen und liefern eine Message, dass man nie seine Träume aufgeben darf, ganz egal was passiert. Folge immer deinem Herzen, durch Hochs und Tiefs, hör niemals auf zu Kämpfen, glaube an dich selbst und an deine Ideale. Auch wenn die ganze Welt sich gegen dich stellt, musst du aufstehen und für dich selbst kämpfen.


Was hat es mit dem Artwork auf sich?


Mirfin von CephaloSpinal Design hat dieses unglaubliche Artwork für uns gemacht.
Wir kennen Mirfin seitdem wir in Japan mit seiner Band IN ARCADIA getourt sind. Ein sehr cooler Bursche und eine echt großartige Band. Also gab mir Ronnie den Tipp, dass er auch ein unglaublicher Designer ist also heuerten wir ihn an, das Artwork für unser neues Album zu machen. Wir mögen seine Designs und ich kann nur sagen, dass ich echt sehr happy mit dem Ergebnis bin und mit der großartigen Arbeit, die er bei dem neuen Cover Artwork geleistet hat. Er hat genau verstanden, was wir mit den Lyrics und dem Konzept ausdrücken wollen und hat uns innerhalb kürzester Zeit ein beeindruckendes Artwork geliefert, außerdem hat er alle fünf Singles gemacht sowie Poster, T-Shirts Designs, die zu den verschiedenen Designs von CD und LP passen. Der Junge ist echt talentiert und wir sind wirklich dankbar, dass wir es geschafft haben, dass er für uns arbeitet.


Wo siehst du für dich die Unterschiede im Vergleich zu „Insidious“? Für mich klingt „The Puritan“ kompakter und mehr „Straight to your Face“ als „Insidious“.


Da kann ich dir nur zustimmen. „The Puritan“ ist geradliniger mit besserem Sound, erwachsenerem Songwriting, fokussierter und mehr Metal als jemals zuvor. Die großen Unterschiede sind der großartige Sound, den wir jetzt haben und das Songwriting, das sich erwachsener anfühlt sowie unsere Einstellung als Band. Wir waren auch sehr offen den großartigen Ideen von Daniel Bergstrand und George Nerantzis von den Dug Out Studios gegenüber. Und als Songwriter und Performer kann ich einfach nur bestätigen, dass das bisher unsere beste Arbeit ist. Ich finde, wir haben unseren Stil beibehalten, wir sind nicht plötzlich eine andere Band geworden, aber auf dem neuen Album haben wir eine Art einfachere Arrangements geschrieben und den Details mehr Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt, wie coole Vocallines zu kreeieren. Wir wollten einfach, dass die Fans unsere musikalische Message direkt verstehen, ohne irgendwelche aufdringliche oder protzige Tricks. Wir sind hier und unsere Message ist direkt und auf den Punkt gebracht. Wir spielen Metal und sind stolz darauf.


Wie war der Prozess des Songwritings sowie der Aufnahmen?


Ich habe ca. 1.5 Jahren bevor die Aufnahmen begannen, zu schreiben begonnen und auch Ronnie hat mir sehr mit den Songarrangements geholfen, auch haben wir die ganzen Texte zusammen geschrieben. Wir sind sehr happy mit dem Songwriting und schlussendlich haben wir dann eben mit Daniel Bergstrand und George Nerantzis zusammengearbeitet und es stellte sich heraus, dass es das beste Studioteam war, das wir mit NIGHTRAGE bisher hatten. Dug Out Productions ist eines der besten Metal Studios auf der ganzen Welt und diese Jungs wissen wie man produziert und wie man unglaubliche Albums masterd. „The Puritan“ ist ein großartiges Beispiel für diese Killer-Kollaboration. Der Sound, den wir durch sie erreicht haben ist so brutal und kraftvoll und sie haben hart dafür gearbeitet, dass wir das so hinkriegen. Also der ganze Prozess verlief eigentlich sehr glatt und wir können es kaum erwarten für ein neues Album zurückzukehren.


Wird es ein Video für einen Song des Albums geben?


Wir haben bis jetzt zwei Musikvideos mit Magnus Ewald gedreht. „Kiss Of A Sycophant“ und „Stare Into Infinity“, auch haben wir zwei Lyric-Videos veröffentlicht für „Desperate Vows“ und den Titeltrack „The Puritan“, die man auf Youtube finden kann. Magnus hat bei den zwei Videos großartige Arbeit geleistet und außerdem möchte ich unserem unglaublichen Label Despotz Records danken, dass sie bis jetzt schon so viel cooles Zeug veröffentlicht haben. Wir haben bis jetzt fünf digitale Singles und einen Remix veröffentlicht.




Gibt’s schon Tourpläne für dieses Jahr?


Wir arbeiten an vielen Tour-Ideen aktuell und können auch schon zwei Osteuropa-Touren diesen Sommer bestätigen plus noch mehr in Spanien, Griechenland, Schweden und Italien-Shows, sowie auch eine Nordamerika-Tour. Wir hoffen natürlich, dass wir bald mal wieder nach Österreich zurückkehren um unsere großartigen Fans hier wieder zu treffen.

Hi Marios, what´s going on these days?


Hey there we are working hard making a lot of Interviews for the new album and we are getting an amazing feedback so far from the press and fans and the overall vibes are very positive since people liking the news songs a lot and they are encouraging us to carry on with the band.


Your new record “The Puritan” is out, how do you feel now with it?


We feel very proud and happy with all the song-writing and I think that personally that we have accomplished another great album, the best probably so far and I´m really happy of where we are standing right now with finding a great label like Despotz records and also our new singer Ronnie Nyman. We are loving the new album for the fact that we kept the signature Nightrage sound all over it, without any compromise and we maintain the same musical intensity and melody all over the place. We alway playing music from the heart and we dont want to make things complicated, we believe in musical integrity and you can say that ”The Puritan” its a great example of that. We have very fast songs and also very mid tempo songs, that portray a wide array of infuences and also the melody plays an important role of how we sound and compose the songs, we like to combine brutality and melody in a great metal package that is also refreshing and interesting for the listener.



You had again a few lineup changes. What happened to Johan and Olof?


Olof was lost and we couldnt reach him at all he didn´t answer on emails and never show up for our shows so we let him be, Johan told us that he didn´t have more time for NIGHTRAGE since he wanted to play with my buddy Gus G and Marty Friedman.


You also lost again your singer. Why did Antony leave and how did you find Ronnie Nyman?


Antony proved to be the wrong guy to have in the band plus we lost contact/friendship and he also lost his passion and focus being on NIGHTRAGE, so he had to go and that was best for both sides, plus we had some personal issues since he created much trouble on the Nightrage camp. I found Ronnie Nyman through our mutual friend Jesper Strömblad and we clicked since he loves Nightrage and he understand where we are coming from.



Ronnie is also in the hardcore band ALWAYS WAR and I think you can hear it in his style also in NIGHTRAGE. Could he just be himself or was it important to try to sound like a typical Melodic Death Metal singer?


I think his hardcore backround its something that adds to the NIGHTRAGE songs and I think that he is trying to deliver great metal hooks with his vocals and you can hear his hardcore style on the new songs, because thats a part of him and I think that he combining both really well and I´m happy with all the work he has done on “The Puritan”.
Ronnie he is very flexible as a singer He has a great charisma on stage with giving a lot of energy and also as a singer he has a lot of heart and soul, and that is very obvious on “The Puritan” Thing is that we gave Ronnie this chance fronting Nightrage and he claimed his position be in the band on the Japan and Russian tours we did together, I mean the guy he is a sort of hero for me when he announce us that he is quitting his dayjob to come on the Japan tour, that for me was a positive sign that he is the right guy with the right attitude to be the frontman in NIGHTRAGE.



If I take a look at your former- and session members, NIGHTRAGE seems a little bit like a phone book of international musicians. How frustrating is it for you to search new members after almost every record?


Thats a good explanation right there haha yeah you can say that we have becoming something like a hotel almost, but that was the only way for the band to carry on, we had to go through all these shitty situations to stay alive and of course its not the best thing in the world but its not the end of it as well, I mean there is a reason why all these line up changes and why we are still here playing our beloved music, people most of the time looking for chances rather a musical connection, its kinda pathetic if you think that I have always trying to help people not to let them down but I have learned from my own experience that the more you give the more they are trying to take from you, now I´m thinking about it I dont feel any frustration anymore of what happened, I used to be very angry with some certain people but I let it go you know, I dont mind them at all they did what they did trying to please themselves, but you know we are still here and that truly explains and shows the power of Nightrage.



At the moment Jesper Strömblad (guitar) and Christojer Barkensjö (drums) are supporting you live. Why didn´t you engage a permanent drummer and second guitarist?


Not anymore they were just session guys for some shows and thats it, they are busy with their band and its better this way, we have already found a new drummer and second guitarist that we are going to reveal their names soon and they will helping us for our forthcomin shows. We didnt have the time to find a new drummer and guitarist for the new album prior to the recordings thats why move on to record the album as a trio and that actually worked really well.


Can you please explain the album title the “Puritan” and tell us what the lyrics on this one are about?


The lyrics and also the ideas of our new album of “The Puritan” are very symbolic and we want to express our passion for our beloved music, to be able to be yourself, reaching your goals with humility, and also been honest and delivering the music that coming out from your heart. The lyrics are connected with the music and they are making a perfect fit. This time on the lyrical side we tried to reach the essence of the human soul and dig a bit deeper. We are dealing with situations that are very personal and at the same can reach to anybodys soul, we are trying to talk about those kind of themes in a more poetic way, we love that the fans they can find their own meanings on the lyrics and interpeted them on their own life situations. We believe that lyrics are very important along with our music and we are paying extra attention to write some good lines. The lyrics on the new album wanna show and deliver the message, that you never have to give up your own dreams, no matter what happens, always following your heart in life, in ups and downs, never stop fighting, believing in yourself and on your ideals. Even if the whole world its against you, you need to be able to stand up and fight for yourself.


What can you tell me about the artwork?

We know Mirfin since we have toured together in Japan with his band “In Arcadia”, really cool guy and cool band, so Ronnie gave me the tip that he is an awesome designer as well, so we proposed him the idea to make the artwork for our new album since we liked his designs and I can tell you that we are also really happy with the outcome and all the great work he did for the new cover artwork, he understood what we wanted to express through our lyrics and concepts and deliver to us in no time this amazing indeed artwork, plus he did all the 5 singles, poster and t-shirt designs along with the different designs for the CD and LP, the guy is really talented and we are so thankful to him that he was able to make this great work for us.



Where do you see the differences in comparison to “Insidious”? For me “The Puritan” is more compact and straight in your face than “Insidious”.


I agree “The Puritan” its more straightforward, with better sound, more mature songwriting, more focused, more metal than ever before. The main differences its the great new sound that we got, the songwriting that feels its more mature now, and our attitude as a band, we were so open to all the great ideas from Daniel Bergstrand and George Nerantzis from Dug out studios and also as songwriters and performers I feel that this is our best work to date. I think we still keeping the same sort of style on the new album like on the previous albums, we didnt became another band all of a sudden, but on the new album we wrote way more simple arrangements and we pay attention on details, like creating cool vocal lines, we wanted that the fans will understand directly our musical message without flashy or show off tricks. We are here and our message is direct and to the point, we are playing metal and we are very proud of this.


How was the songwriting and recording process?


I started to write almost 1.5 year ago prior to the recordings and Ronnie also helped me a lot with all the song arrangements, plus we have written all lyrics together. We are really happy with all the song-writing and finally on the actual recordings we got to work with Daniel Bergstrand and George Nerantzis and they proved to be the best team and studio that we ever got to record with Nightrage so far, Dug out productions its one of the best metal studios in the world and these guys know how to produce and mix master amazing albums and “The Puritan” its a great example of that killer collaboration, the sound they helped us achieve its so brutal and powerful, and they worked very hard to make it happen, so the whole process went very smooth and we cant wait to come back with the next album.


Will there be a video for any song on this album?


We filmed 2 music videos so far with Magnus Ewald, "Kiss Of A Sycophant" and Stare Into Infinity, plus we have released 2 more lyric videos, for Desperate Vows and title track “The Puritan” that you can find on youtube. Great work from Magnus on the 2 videos and thanks also to our awesome label Despotz Records releasing so much cool stuff so far,we have also released five digital singles and one remix.


Are there some tour plans for this year?


We are working on many touring ideas right now, and we are about to confirm two Eastern back to back Euro tours after the summer, plus more Spanish, Greek, Swedish and Italian shows, and one North American tour as well. Hoping to get back to Austria would be so awesome to meet all our great fans there, thanks a lot for the great Interview and a big hello to all our fans there, support Nightrage and go and buy our new album “The Puritan” stay metal and well.
