CRUACHAN ist ein Celtic Folk / Black-Metal Band aus Irland, und sie haben mich mit ihrer Musik und ihrer Live-Performance fasziniert, sodass ich mich sehr darüber gefreut habe, dass Gründungsmitglied Keith Fay bereit war, mir einige Fragen zu ihrem neuen Album „Blood For The Blood God" und auch einigen anderen Dingen zu beantworten.



Hallo!
Ich habe euch auf der Bühne beim Rock For Roots Festival in der Nähe von Berlin gesehen und ich war fasziniert von eurer Show.
Also machte ich den Review für das neue Album „Blood For The Blood God" und es klingt großartig! Und ich bin froh, die Möglichkeit zu haben, dir einige Fragen zu stellen!

Wie war der Auftritt beim Rock For Roots Festival für euch?


Es war eine wirklich coole Show und wir haben ein paar alte Freunde dort getroffen. Es war eine lange Zeit seit wir in Deutschland gespielt hatten und fühlte sich großartig an, endlich wieder dort aufzutreten.


Wer gestaltet eure Bühnen-Kleidung?


Wir haben alles selbst gemacht. Das Outfit ist fast am Ende seiner Lebensdauer, deshalb ist es Zeit einige neue Kostüme zu entwerfen. Das Schottenkaro von meinem Kostüm ist das gleiche, das ich auf den Fotos für „Tuatha Na Gael“ hatte, also ist es ein fast 20 Jahre altes Fabrikat.


Letztes Jahr seid ihr durch viele Länder getourt. Wie waren diese Konzerte für euch?


Erstaunlich, 2014 war ein wirklich erstaunliches Jahr für CRUACHAN. Wir waren in Russland für eine Mini-Tour und bei einem großen Outdoor-Festival, bei dem keine westliche Band jemals gespielt hat. Wir spielten in der Ukraine und hatten einen Pfeifer, der ihre Nationalhymne auf der Bühne gespielt hat, das ist eine große Story des Landes geworden. Wir spielten in Israel und es gab eine Menge Leute, die uns gesagt haben, wir sollten nicht dort spielen, das war eine seltsame Sache für uns. Diese Leute waren so extrem und verwendeten eine Art Mobbing-Methode, um ihren Standpunkt klar zu machen. Wie auch immer, die Art wie wir es sehen ist, dass wir nicht politisch sind – wir haben für unsere Fans gespielt, nicht für die Politiker. Wir hatten auch ein paar tolle Festival-Auftritte in diesem Jahr, mein Favorit war das Brutal Assault, das war ein tolles Fest!


Mögt ihr es um die Welt zu reisen?


Ja, ich liebe es. Es kann aber auch hart sein. Ich habe zwei Kinder, eine Freundin und ich hasse es, sie zu verlassen, aber das bedeutet auch, dass ich nie für viele Monate auf Tour bin. Auch bei unserer letzten Show in Eindhoven war meine Freundin bei mir. Das macht die Sache ein bisschen besser, hehe.


Wart ihr schon einmal in Österreich oder gibt es Pläne nach Österreich zu kommen?


In unserer Geschichte haben wir nur ein Mal in Österreich gespielt, in Innsbruck, als wir mit BLACK MESSIAH tourten. Im Moment planen wir eine Europa-Tour für das Jahr 2015, und da hoffen wir, dass Österreich darin aufgenommen werden kann, aber wie immer ist dies in den Händen der Agenten und der Booker der Shows.


Wie wichtig ist Irland für euch und eure Musik?


Entscheidend! Von unseren Anfängen an in den Nebeln der Zeit haben wir uns vorgenommen, über die Geschichte und Mythologie unseres Landes singen. Wir haben eine tiefe und reiche Geschichte, die Millionen von Jahren zurückreicht. Wir haben einige der ältesten Sprachen und Strukturen in Europa hier. Wir waren einmal, in alten Zeiten, eine Supermacht und das wichtigste Zentrum für Schulbildung in Europa. Unsere Mythologie ist so reich, und eindrucksvoller als in allen anderen Ländern. All dies hat CRUACHAN in seine Musik vom ersten Tag als wir begannen eingefangen.




Woher nimmst du deine Inspiration?


Ich weiß wirklich nicht, ich glaube, die meisten Bands beantworten diese Frage mit einigen gefälschten und bedeutungsvollen Lügen, aber die Realität ist, dass Menschen nur Musik schreiben, weil sie entweder in der Lage sind es zu tun oder es einfach tun. Meine Inspiration ist einfach meine Freude daran Musik zu komponieren. Oder mein Hund.


Euer neues Album „Blood For The Blood God" ist großartig! Wie lange habt ihr daran gearbeitet?


Danke, das Schreiben nahm fast ein Jahr in Anspruch zwischen den Proben für Touren etc. Der eigentliche Aufnahmevorgang dauerte drei Wochen.


Bitte erzähl mir etwas über die Entstehung des Albums - was für Ideen und Geschichten stecken hinter den Songs?


Die Schöpfung war ziemlich Standard. Die Sackpfeifen wurden in der Ukraine aufgenommen, alles andere in Dublin. Bezüglich der Texte, werde ich über einige meiner Favoriten sprechen. „Perversion, Corruption And Sanctity": Wir haben schon immer anti-christliche Lieder gehabt und dies hat nichts mit unserem Black-Metal-Sound zu tun, aber es ist nicht zu leugnen, dass diese Songs immer besser in Extreme Black Metal funktionieren, hehe, aber dieses besondere Lied beschäftigt sich mit der Suche nach den Kinder-Sex-Missbrauchsskandalen, über die wir so viele Male zu hören bekommen. Es geht um meinen Ekel über diese Institution und wie sie ihren großen Reichtum nutzen um all diese Verbrechen zu vertuschen. Kürzlich habe ich in Irland von der Aushebung eines Massengrabes mit fast 800 Säuglingsleichen gehört. Sie wurden von Nonnen vom Waisenhaus bei der Kirche begraben. Kinder geboren von „gefallenen Frauen". Frauen, die unehelich schwanger wurden, wurden wie Scheiße behandelt. Dann gibt es den Fall der Magdalen Wäschereien, wo diese Frauen fast wie Gefangene gehalten wurden. Es sind Geschichten die in diesem Song angedeutet werden, auch wenn der Schwerpunkt auf den Vorfälle liegt, wo Priester Jungen vergewaltigen. Es gibt zu viele Fälle davon, ein Priester - als patriarchalische Figur in der Gesellschaft gefeiert - fickt Kinder in den Arsch, die keine Ahnung davon haben was mit ihnen geschieht.
Der Song "The Sea Queen Of Connaught", das ist wirklich cool, und ich würde die Leute dazu anhalten, etwas über diese erstaunliche Frau - Grace O´Malley - herauszufinden. Sie war eine irische Piratenkönigin, ich meine ... muss ich noch mehr dazu sagen? Ich kenne einige Leute, wie Piraten-Metal Bands, aber bitte glaubt nicht, dass wir dies in irgendeiner Weise nachmachen wollen, das ist eine wahre Geschichte einer echten Piratin, die in irischen Gewässern unterwegs war. Sie wurde auch gebeten, in England Queen Elizabeth zu treffen, um zu versuchen, die schikanösen englischen Truppen zu stoppen. Ihr Schiff hat in London angedockt und mit ihr ihre Truppen. Die beiden haben in Latein kommuniziert weil Grace nicht Englisch sprechen konnte und die Königin nicht Gälisch. Es gibt eine berühmte Geschichte, wie Grace nieste und ihr wurde ein Taschentuch gegeben, das sie verwendet und danach ins Feuer geworfen hat. Der Hof war schockiert, da erklärte Grace, dass wir in Irland denken, dass etwas das schmutzig ist weggeworfen werden muss.




Warum ist "Beren Und Luthien" ein so hartes Lied? Es ist eine Liebesgeschichte! Magst du J.R.R. Tolkiens Geschichten?


Wir sind eine Metal-Band, so dass wir Liebeslieder auf Metal spielen. Aber es ist nicht nur eine Liebesgeschichte und ich verweise auf mehr coole Sachen, die in dieser Geschichte passieren, Kriege mit Morgoth, Werwölfe und Kämpfe. Der harte Ton passt also wirklich. Ja, ich bin und war immer ein großer Tolkien-Fan.


Ist Songwriting Teamarbeit oder nur die Arbeit von einem Bandmitglied?


Der größte Teil des Songwriting ist von mir, aber zum ersten Mal hatte ich mehr Hilfe vom Rest der Band als je zuvor. In der Tat schrieb Kieran mehr oder weniger zwei ganze Songs auf diesem Album. Das normale Verfahren ist mit Teilen zu kommen, vielleicht Riffs usw. John Ryan hat dann vielleicht ein Folk-Teil dazu und will es uns zeigen. Dann ist es eine Frage welche der in unseren Häusern entwickelten Teile zusammen passen. Wir schicken einige rudimentäre Aufnahmen zu Mauro, so kann er anfangen, Ideen für das Schlagzeug zu entwickeln, dann proben wir in einem Studio und sehen, wie die Songs klingen und um zu diskutieren, was funktioniert, was nicht, was verbessert werden soll usw. Die Texte werden immer danach geschrieben werden und immer von mir.


CRUACHAN besteht seit mehr als 20 Jahren! Wie schwierig war es, die Band so lange am Leben zu halten?


Wir haben viele Höhen und Tiefen erlebt, und wenn ich zurückblicke denke ich manchmal, wir sollten mehr erreicht haben, aber das ist die Vergangenheit und die Zukunft hat nie heller für uns ausgesehen.


Warum habt ihr euch entschieden, diesen Celtic Folk / Black-Metal zu machen?


Ich war 14 Jahre alt, als ich Black Metal und auch Folk Musik entdeckt habe. Ich habe gehört, was SKYCLAD auf ihrem ersten Album gemacht haben - 1 oder 2 Songs hatten einige folkige Teile - und ich dachte, warum nicht eine Band gründen, die das die ganze Zeit tut. Auch, warum nicht Black Metal machen statt Thrash Metal. Das war der Beginn von CRUACHAN! Ich habe in den letzten Interviews gesagt, dass ich denke, es benötigt den Geist eines Menschen im Alter von 14, um zu glauben, dass es funktionieren würde, haha.


Ist die Musik die ihr macht, auch die Lieblingsmusik von allen Bandmitgliedern?


Ugh, nein! Die meisten von uns hassen Folk Metal. Die meisten Bands sind zu albern und lustig für uns, aber es gibt einige Ausnahmen: MANEGARM, SKYFORGER, FALKENBACH, MOONSORROW etc. etc. Was Folk Metal-Bands wie diese machen ist wirklich cool. Es ist nicht dumm und voller Trinklieder, es ist ernst und gut durchdachte Musik.


Wie schwierig ist es für eine Band aus Irland populär zu werden?


Ich weiß es wirklich nicht, ich hatte nicht den Luxus, um mir darüber überhaupt Sorgen machen zu müssen, aber wir hatten immer ein gewisses Maß an Popularität in den letzten 20 Jahren. Ich glaube, die Szene hier ist wahrscheinlich so stark, wie sie nie gewesen ist. Es gibt eine Fülle von neuen Talenten aus dem Land, und es ist einfacher in diesen Tagen für Bands, viele der kleineren Bands können ihr Material nach da draußen bringen und man kann es hören.


Ich kenne einige andere Bands aus Irland - gibt es Freundschaft zwischen den irischen Bands?


Es gibt eine Menge der Freundschaft und eine Menge von gutmütiger Rivalität. Wir haben Freunde in allen größeren Bands hier, wie PRIMORDIAL, WAYLANDER, MAEL MORDHA, COLDWAR, MOURNING BELOVETH usw. Es gibt ein paar Bars in Dublin, wo Sie immer auf jemand von diesen Bands stoßen und auf viele mehr, und alle trinken zusammen und haben Spaß.




Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Wir möchten ein noch besseres nächstes Album machen und mehr auf Tour gehen. Wir wollen im Jahr 2015 in die USA kommen und hoffentlich auf einigen der größeren weltweiten Festivals spielen!!

CRUACHAN is a celtic folk/black metal band from Ireland and they fascinated me with their music and their live-performance, so I was glad, that founding member Keith Fay was willing to answer me some questions about their new album “Blood For The Blood God” and also some other things.

Hello!
My name is Elisabeth and I work for the Austrian online-magazine earshot.
I have seen you on stage on Rock for Roots Festival near Berlin and I was fascinated about your show.
So I made the review for your new album “Blood For The Blood God” and it sounds great!
And I´m happy to have the possibility to ask you some questions!

How was the gig at Rock for Roots festival for you?


It was a really cool show and we got to meet some old friends there. It had been a long time since we played Germany so felt great to finally get back there.


Who designed your stage clothes?


We designed everything ourselves. The stage gear is almost at the end of its life so it is time to start planning some new costumes. The tartan I use in my costume is the same tartan I had in the photos for Tuatha Na Gael, that’s almost 20 year old fabric.


Last year you toured through lots of countries. How were these gigs for you?


Amazing, 2014 has been a truly amazing year for CRUACHAN. We were in Russia for a mini-tour and to play at a large outdoor festival that no western band had ever played at. We played Ukraine and had a piper play their national anthem on stage, that became a huge news story in the country. We played Israel and had a lot of people tell us we should not play there, that was a strange thing for us. These people were so extreme and used such bullying methods to make their point. Anyway, the way we see it, we are not political – we are going to play to our fans, not to politicians. We also had some great festival appearances this year, my favourite was Brutal Assault, that was an amazing fest!


Do you like to travel around the world?


Yes, I love it. It can be hard to do. I have 2 kids, a girlfriend and I hate to leave them but that also means I will never tour for months and months on end. Also, our last show in Eindhoven, my girlfriend was with me. That makes things a bit better hehe.


Have you ever been in Austria or are there plans to come to Austria?


In our history we have only played Austria once, at Innsbruck when we toured with BLACK MESSIAH. Right now we are planning a European tour for 2015 so we hope that Austria will be included but as always, this is in the hands of the agent that books the shows.


How important is Ireland for you and your music?


Critical! From our beginnings in the mists of time we set out to sing about the history and mythology of our country. We have a deep and rich history that reaches back millions of years. We have some of the oldest languages and structures in Europe here. We were once, in ancient times, considered both a world super power and the main centre for education in Europe. Our mythology is as rich and evocative as any other countries. All this has been captured in CRUACHAN’s music from the very first day we began.


Where do you find your inspiration?


I don’t really know, I think most bands answer this with some fake meaningful and significant lies but the reality is people just write music because they either lie to do it or have to do it. My inspiration is simply my enjoyment of composing music. Or my dog.


Your new album "Blood For The Blood God" is great! How long did you work at it?


Thank you, the writing took almost a year in between rehearsing for tours etc. The actual recording process took 3 weeks.


Please tell me something about the creation of the album – what ideas and stories are behind the songs?


The creation was pretty standard recording stuff. The bagpipes were recorded in Ukraine, everything else was in Dublin. As for lyrics, I’ll talk about some of my favourites. “Perversion, Corruption And Sanctity”, we have always had anti-christian songs and this is nothing to do with our black metal sound but there is no denying that these songs always work better in extreme black metal hehe, this particular song is looking at the child sex-abuse scandals that we hear about so many times. It’s about my utter disgust at this institution and how they use their vast wealth to cover up all these crimes. Recently in Ireland you may have heard about the unearthing of a mass grave containing nearly 800 infant corpses. Buried there by nuns in a church run orphanage. Children born to “fallen women”, women who fell pregnant out of wedlock, were treated like shit. Then there is the case of the Magdalen laundries where these women were held almost as prisoners. These are stories are hinted at in the song, although the main focus is the full on incidents of priest raping boys. There are too many cases of this, a priest – hailed as a patriarchal figure in society – ass fucking children that have no idea what is happening to them.

The song “The Sea Queen Of Connaught”, this is really cool and I would ask people to go and find out about this amazing woman – Grace O’Malley. She was an Irish pirate queen, I mean … do I even need to say anymore? I know some people like pirate-metal but please don’t think this is in any way related, this is a real story of a real pirate that operated in Irish waters. She was even asked to meet in England with Queen Elizabeth to try and get her to stop harassing English forces. Her ship docked in London and out she came with her troops. but please don’t think this is in any way related, this is a real story of a real pirate that operated in Irish waters. They both communicated in Latin as Grace did not know English and the Queen did not know Gaelic. There is a famous tale that Grace sneezed and was handed a handkerchief which she used and threw into the fire afterwards. The court were shocked, Grace explained that in Ireland we consider that dirty and soiled and needs to be cast away.


Why is “Beren And Luthien” such a hard song? It is a lovestory! Do you like J.R.R. Tolkiens stories?


We are a metal band so we play love songs to metal. But it’s not only a love story and I focused on the more cool stuff that happens in that tale, wars with Morgoth, werewolves and battles. The hard sound really suits it. Yes, I am and always have been a huge Tolkien fan.


Is songwriting teamwork or only the work of one band member?


Most of the song writing is by me but for the first time I had more help from the rest of the band than ever before. In fact Kieran wrote more or less an entire 2 songs on this album. The normal process is to come up with parts, riffs etc. John Ryan might have a folk part too and will show us. Then it’s a matter of getting together at our houses and seeing what parts work with other parts. We send some rudimentary recording to Mauro so he can start getting ideas for drums, then we rehearse in a studio and see how the songs sound and discuss what works, what doesn’t, what can be improved etc. The lyrics are always written afterwards and always by me.


CRUACHAN exists since more than 20 years! How difficult was it, to keep the band alive for such a long time?


We have had a lot of ups and downs and I look back and genuinely think we should have achieved more but, that is the past and the future has never looked brighter for us.


Why did you decide to make this celtic folk/black metal?


I was 14 years old, into black metal and also folk music. I heard what SKYCLAD were doing on their first album – 1 or 2 songs had some folky parts – and I thought why not have a band that does that all the time. Also, why not have black metal instead of thrash metal. Enter CRUACHAN! I have said in past interviews that I think it takes the mind of someone aged 14 to actually think that would work haha.


Is the music that you make the favourite music of all bandmembers?


Ugh, no! Most of us hate folk-metal. Most bands are too silly and funny for us, there are some exceptions: MANEGARM, SKYFORGER, FALKENBACH, MOONSORROW etc. etc. folk metal like these bands is really cool. It is not stupid and full of drinking songs, it is serious and well thought out music.


How difficult is it for a band from Ireland to become popular?


I don’t really know as I have had the luxury of not having to ever worry about that, we have always had some degree of popularity over the last 20 years. I think the scene here is probably as strong as it has even been. There is a wealth of new talent coming out of the country as it´s so easier these days for bands to record, a lot of the smaller bands are getting their material out there and listened to.


I know some other bands from Ireland – is there friendship between the Irish bands?


There is a lot of friendship and a lot of good natured rivalry too. We have friends in all the bigger bands here such as PRIMORDIAL, WAYLANDER, MAEL MORDHA, COLDWAR, MOURNING BELOVETH etc. There are a few bars in Dublin where you will always bump into someone from these bands and many more, all drinking together and having the craic.


What are your plans for the future?


To make an even better next album and tour more. We want to get to the US in 2015 and hopefully play at some of the bigger world wide festivals!!
