Die schwedischen Newcomer LANCER könnten die Heavy/Power Metal-Sensation 2015 werden. Mit dem phänomenalen Mix aus britischem und deutschem Metal fegt auf "Second Storm" wirklich einen wahrer Sturm des harten Stahls über euch hinweg. Wir sprachen mit Vocalist und Songwriter Isak Stenvall über die Entstehung des Albums und warum der Vogelstrauß das beste Symbol für Heavy Metal ist.





Hey Jungs, Gratulation zu eurem grandiosen neuen Album! Wie fühlt ihr euch mit „Second Storm“ jetzt?


Hallo, danke vielmals! Es freut mich, dass du das Album magst. Wir sind sehr stolz auf das Produkt, auf alles vom Booklet-Layout bis hin zum Sound der Snare-Drum. Das Album ist genauso geworden wie wir es uns gewünscht haben, in manchen sogar viel cooler als wir uns jemals vorgestellt haben. Die Reaktionen sind ausschließlich großartig und es ist eine sehr aufregende Zeit für uns.


Ich war sofort weggeblasen von eurem furiosen Sound und für mich fühlt es sich wie ein riesiger Schritt seit der Veröffentlichung eures Debüts an. Wie war es an dem Album zu arbeiten und wo siehst du die Unterschiede zum Vorgänger?


Die Musik ist immer noch die gleiche, aber etwas heavier als zuvor. Es ist etwas düsterer, es gibt aber keinen großen Key-Refrain auf diesem Album. Es ist wie jedes Album sein sollte, es sollte immer besser als das vorhergehende sein. Ein Hauptunterschied, den die Leute schnell herausfinden werden, ist, dass die Produktion etwas moderner klingt. Das erste klang etwas wie ein Demo-Tape aus den 80ern. Jetzt bekommst du die Bass-Drum straight into your face, ich liebe den Sound auf dem Album! Das ist es, wie wir klingen wollten.


Als ich „Behind The Walls“ das erste Mal gehört habe, war mein erster Gedanke in etwa: „Verdammt, so sollte HELLOWEEN heute klingen!“ Würdet ihr die 80er HELLOWEEN als Einfluss nennen und welche weitere Einflüsse gibt es sonst? Ich höre auch etwas IRON MAIDEN und EDGUY heraus.


Ja, HELLOWEEN ist eine meiner Haupteinflüsse, ich liebe ihre komplette Diskografie, aber meine persönlichen Favoriten sind die ersten drei Alben. Wie du schon erwähntest, ist IRON MAIDEN eine weitere großartige Band die ich sehr viele höre, somit hörst du auch einiges von MAIDEN in LANCER. Unser Sound ist eine Kombination der britischen und deutschen Heavy Metal Szene. Andere Bands die mich viel beeinflussten im Songwriting sind JUDAS PRIEST, DIO, GAMMA RAY und EDGUY.


Wie kam die Idee einen Strauß als Maskottchen zu wählen und hat er bereits einen Namen?


Haha, es hat keinen Namen, es hat ja noch nicht mal ein Geschlecht. Wir denken, dass Totenschädel, Drachen, Dämonen und so Zeug als Maskottchen einfach schon zu oft da waren. Wir brauchten etwas Neues – einen Eyecatcher. Ein Vogelstrauß ist eine sehr majestätische, aggressive und wilde Kreatur, die auf die losgeht und in zwei Hälften teilt. Wenn du jemals einem wilden begegnet bist, weißt du was ich meine. Recht viel mehr Metal als das kann es nicht mehr werden!




Worum geht es in euren Texten?


Es gibt kein Konzept, es sind einfach richtig gute Metalsongs, jeder mit seiner eigenen Story. Zum Beispiel wollten wir einen zehnminütigen Epos für das Album schreiben... und was ist epischer als ein ägyptischer Gott? „Aton“ ist ein sehr kraftvoller Name, es klingt heavy und majestätisch. Da ist so viel Magie und Geheimnisse in diesen alten Geschichten. So denke ich, dass das der auch der Grund ist, wieso jede Geschichten-erzählende Heavy Metal Band eine Verbindung zu alten Göttern hat. Die Bibel ist auch ein Buch voller verrückter Geschichten. „Behind The Walls“ handelt von Gottes Wut über Sodom und Gomorrah. Auch Krieg ist ein typisches Metal-Thema. Wir wollten einen Song über die Insel „Iwo Jima“ schreiben, und da SABATON diese Schlacht noch nicht ausgewählt haben, mussten wir das einfach tun. Es ist nicht glorifizierend, sondern eine traurige Hymne für all die gefallenen Soldaten, die auf dieser gottverlassenen Insel gestorben sind.

In „Fools Marches On“ geht es um die nie enden wollende Kriegsführung der Menschen. Jedes Mal wenn ich die News anschalte, gibt es überall nur Bosheit und Gewalt. In jeder Ecke der Welt gibt es Angst, Hass und Terror. Neue Armeen sind immer auf dem Vormarsch. All diese Idioten und all dieser Hass werden immer Teil dieses Planeten sein, und dieser Fakt macht mich einfach wütend und traurig. Wir haben jetzt 2015 und es fühlt sich oft so an als hätten wir von der Vergangenheit nichts gelernt. Ich habe die Texte geschrieben um mich daran zu erinnern, dass es nie zu spät ist. Wir müssen weiterhin für die menschlichen Rechte sprechen und die positive Message verbreiten um Gerechtigkeit für diese Welt zu bringen. Denn dieser Ort ist ziemlich im Arsch, aber irgendwie glaube ich trotzdem an eine hellere Zukunft.

Ich denke, dass Texte überlegt geschrieben werden und Substanz haben sollten, nicht nur über Glorie und Drachen und donnernde Siege. Im Power Metal gibt es so viele gute Songs mit miesen Texten. Texte sind meiner Meinung nach wichtig und es ist auch wichtig, dass all die Worte sich mit den Melodien zusammenfügen.


Wie läuft normalerweise das Erschaffen der Songs in LANCER ab?


Die meisten Songs werden alleine zu Hause geschrieben. Das ist es wie ich am Liebsten arbeite. Wenn ein Song geschrieben ist, präsentiere ich ihn den Jungs und dann geht der Daumen hoch oder runter. Fredrik (Kelemen – Git) ist auch ein Hauptsongwriter. Er schickt mir seine Songs und ich füge meine Vocal-Lines hinzu. Normalerweise haben wir einen bestimmten Sound in unserem Kopf wenn wir beginnen diesen zu arrangieren, aber jeder in der Band ist sehr involviert im Arrangement und der Detailarbeit. Jeder bringt sein Spezielles ein, was das gewisse Etwas in den Song bringt. Wir ändern im Studio nichts mehr, alles sollte bis ins Detail im Proberaum fertiggestellt und entschieden sein, bevor wir das Studio entern. Auf diese Weise verlierst du nichts, wenn du den Song live spielst, denn sie sind so geschrieben, dass sie von fünf Personen gespielt werden. Wir haben unseren Produzenten Gustav bei frühen Arrangement-Arbeiten in den Proberaum eingeladen, denn wenn jemand eine Idee hat, möchten wir diese spüren und alle zusammen spielen, um es wirken zu lassen.


Ihr habt „nur“ neun Killer-Tracks auf „Second Storm“. Hattet ihr Material über, das nicht für das Album verwendet wurde?


Ja, faktisch haben wir das! Einer der coolsten Songs sogar, wenn ich ehrlich bin. Wir heben es für etwas Spezielles für später auf. Der Song klingt nach einer verlorenen B-Seite von MAIDENs „Somewhere In Time“-Ära. Ein sehr cooler Song.




Warum habt ihr euch für „Iwo Jima“ und „Masters And Crowns“ entschieden um Videos dafür zu drehen und wie liefen die Aufnahmen dazu?


Das Label hat die Singles ausgewählt, ich denke, dass sie einfach die eingängigsten Nummern des Albums sind. Wir hatten verschiedene Ideen für die Videos. In „Masters And The Crowns“ wollten wir eine blinde und zersplitterte Bevölkerung zeigen. Die Männer mit den Köpfen im Sand sollten natürlich ein humoristischer Hinweis auf den Vogelstrauß sein. In „Iwo Jima“ wollten wir weniger Bandszenen, dafür mehr Storyboard. Der Song dreht sich um Veteranen, die von den Albträumen des Krieges heimgesucht werden. Das ganze Video ist sehr gruselig und die Regisseure haben ganze Arbeit geleistet.


Ihr hattet eine kleine Änderung im Line-Up Anfang 2015. Was ist passiert und wie habt ihr Per-Owe „Ewo“ Solvelius als euren neuen Gitarristen gefunden?


Unser alter Gitarrist Peter hatte einige andere Prioritäten in seinem Leben, also wollte er aufhören. Das war hart, denn er war seit dem Beginn schon bei uns. Der Neue, Ewo passt nicht weniger perfekt zu uns. Er kennt sich sehr im Geschäft aus, er ist etwas älter und weiser und ein verdammt großartiger Gitarrist. Ich kenne ihn schon länger, denn ich singe in seiner YNGWIE MALMSTEEN Tribut Band und als Peter ging, war er der erste den wir anriefen. Er ist auch in der großartigen Band TRIDENT tätig, die ihr anchecken müsst, wenn ihr auf brutalen Extreme-Metal steht.


Ihr hattet im April ein paar Auftritte in Schweden; wie war es das neue Material zu präsentieren?


A blast! Die Menge begrüßte die neuen Songs mit offenen Armen. Es ist so großartig endlich wieder zurück auf der Bühne zu sein und das natürlich auch um das neue Material mit voller Kraft zu präsentieren. Ich bin gerade am Weg nach Göteborg und wir werden da um Mitternacht die Stage entern. Ich bin wie immer sehr begierig auf auf die Bühne zu kommen!


Können wir euch bald auf Tour durch Europa erwarten? Ich kann es kaum erwarten euch hier die Bühnen rocken zu sehen!


Ja, wir bringen den Sturm hoffentlich in naher Zukunft ins Ausland. Nichts ist fixiert, aber es gibt einige Angebote, von denen wir in Ruhe das Richtige aussuchen werden.

Hey guys, congratulation to this amazing new record! How do you feel with “Second Storm” now?


Hello, thanks a lot! I´m very glad that you like the album. We are very proud of the product, everything from the booklet layout to the sound of the snare drum. The whole album turned out as we wanted, at some times even cooler than we imagined. The response has been nothing but great, it´s very exciting times right now.


I was instantly blown away by your furious sound and for me it feels like a big step since the release of your debut. How was the work on the record and where do you see the differences in comparison to your first one?


The music is still the same, but a bit heavier than before. This album is a little bit darker, there are no major key choruses at all on this album. It´s what every album should be like, everything should be better than the previous. One main difference that people will find out is that the production sounds more modern, our first album sounded a bit like a demo tape from the 80s. Now you will get the bass drums straight in your face, I really like the sound on this record! This is how we want to sound.


When I heard “Behind The Walls” the first time, i my first though was like: “damn this way should HELLOWEEN sound now. Would you call the HELLOWEEN from the 80s as an influence? And what are your other influences, i can also hear a little bit of IRON MAIDEN and EDGUY in some songs.


Yes, HELLOWEEN is one major influence, I love their whole discography, but my personal favorites are the three first albums. As you mentioned IRON MAIDEN is another great band that I listen to a lot, and you will hear a lot of MAIDEN when you listen to LANCER. Our sound is a combination of the british and german heavy metal scene. Other bands that have influenced me a lot in my own songwriting is JUDAS PRIEST, DIO, GAMMA RAY and EDGUY.


How came the idea to choose an ostrich as your mascot and does he already have a name?


Haha, it doesn´t have a name, it doesn´t even have a gender yet. We feel that having a skull, dragon or demon or something like that for a mascot have been done so many times before. We needed something new that would catch people´s eyes. An ostrich is a really majestic, aggressive and fierceful creature that will outrun you and chop you into pieces if you ever encountered a wild one. It doesn´t get any more metal than that!


What are the lyrics about?


It´s not a concept album, just some really good metal songs each with their own story. For example, we wanted to write a 10 minute epic song on this album, and what is more epic than an Egyptian god? "Aton" is a really powerful name, it sounds heavy and majestic. There is so much magic and secrecy hidden in these old stories, so I guess that´s why pretty much every storytelling heavy metal band has got some connection to the ancient gods. The bible is also a book full of crazy stories, "Behind The Walls" is about God´s wrath over Sodom and Gomorrah. Another typical heavy metal theme is war, we wanted to do a song about the island of "Iwo Jima", and since SABATON haven´t picked that battle yet, we had to go for it. It´s not glorifying at all, it´s a sad hymn for all the fallen soldiers who died on that godforsaken island.

In "Fools Marches On" the theme of the song is mankind´s never-ending warfare. Every time I put on the news, there is cruelty and violence everywhere. In every corner of the world, there is fear, hate and terror. New armies are always on the march. All of these idiots and all of this hate will always be a part of this planet, and that fact really makes me angry and sad. This is 2015, and sometimes it feels that we haven´t learned anything from history. I wrote the lyrics to remind me that it´s never too late, we must continue to speak up for human rights and continue to spread a positive message to bring justice to the world. Because this place is really fucked up, but somehow, I still believe in a brighter future.

I think that the lyrics should be well written and have substance, not just be about glory and dragons of thundering victory. In Power Metal there are so many good songs with crappy lyrics. The lyrics are important in my point of view, and it´s also important that all the words blend together with the melodies.


How is normally the procedure of creating songs in LANCER?


Most of the songs is written in privacy at home. That´s how I like to work. After a song is written I show it to the guys and I either get thumbs up or thumbs down. Fredrik is also a main songwriter and he is sending me songs and I´m adding the vocal lines. We use to have a certain sound in our heads when we start to arrange the songs, but everyone in the band is very involved in the arrangement and the detail work of each song. Everyone is adding their special thing which brings something extra to the result. We´re not working on the songs at all in the studio, everything should be written and decided into detail in the rehearsal room before hitting the studio. In that way you don´t loose anything when you play the songs live, the songs are written to be performed by five musicians. We had our producer Gustav visiting us early on in the arranging process, joining in the rehearsal room. If someone gets an idea we want to feel it and play it all together, let it sink in.


You have “only” nine killer-tracks on “Second Storm”. Was there some material left, which you didn´t use for the record?


Yes, in fact we have! One of the coolest songs to be honest. We will save it to a special thing later on. The song sounds like a lost B-side from MAIDEN´s "Somewhere In Time"-era, very nice song.


Why did you choose “Iwo Jima” and “Masters And Crowns” to shoot videos for and what can you tell me about the shoot?


The label chose the singles, I guess that they are the most catchy on the album. We had several ideas for the music videos. In "Masters And Crowns" we wanted to show a blind and shattered population. The men with their heads in the sand, is of course a humoristic nod to the typical ostrich pose. In the "Iwo Jima" video we wanted to have less band pictures and more of a storyboard. The song is about a veteran who´s haunted by the nightmares of war. The whole video is really creepy and the directors did a fantastic job.


You had a small lineup change in the beginning of 2015. What happened and how did you find Per-Owe to be your new guitar player?


Our former guitarist Peter had some other more important priorities in life, so he wanted to leave. That was tough because he´s been with us from the beginning. Our new guitarist Ewo is nevertheless perfect for us, he has a lot of knowledge of the business, he´s a little bit older and wiser, and a freakin´ great guitarist. I have known him for a while, I´m singing in his YNGWIE MALMSTEEN tribute band, and when Peter decided to leave, he was the first to call. He´s also a member in the great band Trident, check them out if you´re into some brutal extreme metal.


You had a few shows in Sweden in April, how was it to present the new material?


A blast! The crowd welcomed the new songs with open arms, it´s so great to be back on stage again and of course to deliver the new material with full force! I´m on my way to Gothenburg right now and we will hit the stage at midnight, I´m very eager as always to get on stage.


Can we expect you soon to be on tour in Europe? I can´t wait to see you rockin´ the stages over here!


<Yes, we hopefully will bring the storm abroad in a near future. Nothing is set yet, there have been some offers but need to be patient and choose the right one.
