Wir hatten die Möglichkeit, mit Björgvin Sigurðsson und Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson von der isländischen Folk/Viking Metal Band SKÁLMÖLD zu sprechen. Dabei kamen interessante Details über die Band, das Tourleben und Island ans Tageslicht.



Hallo! Schön, euch hier zu treffen! Wie geht es euch?


Þráinn: Gut, sehr gut sogar, es war schon eine lange Tour und wir freuen uns darauf nach Hause zu fahren, aber die Shows waren großartig die ganze Zeit über, sodass wir eigentlich ganz aufgeregt sind, die beiden letzten Shows hier in Österreich spielen.
Diese Show heute Abend war seit vier bis fünf Wochen ausverkauft, so ist dies etwas ganz Besonderes.


Mein letztes Interview das ich hatte, war auch mit einer Band aus Island, SÓLSTAFIR, seid ihr mit diesen Jungs befreundet?


Björgvin: Gute Freunde, sehr gute Freunde sogar. Wir haben in Island viele Shows zusammen gespielt.


Gibt es eine große Metal-Szene in Island?


Þráinn: Sie ist ziemlich groß. Es ist cool! Und sie ist sehr schnell gewachsen in den letzten fünf, sechs Jahren oder so... Wir haben jetzt ein großes Metal-Festival einmal im Jahr, auch ein paar Konzerte jedes Jahr, nicht so viel wie ihr habt, aber die Metal-Szene wächst so schnell, sodass ich hoffe, dass dies etwas ist, das sich in Island hält.


Wie schwierig ist es für eine Band aus Island, populär zu werden?


Björgvin: Nun, wir versuchen es, wir wissen es noch nicht... (lacht)


Ich sah euch schon manchmal auf der Bühne, das letzte Mal am Ragnarök Festival


Þráinn: Ja, ich denke, es hilft uns tatsächlich ein wenig aus Island sein, ich meine, die Leute denken: oh es ist ein Felsen in der Mitte des Atlantiks - weit weg, sodass es wie etwas Besonderes ist, aber es nichts Besonderes.

Björgvin: Exotisch vielleicht.

Þráinn: Exotisch, ja ... Ich denke, es hilft uns wirklich.

Björgvin: Yeah, Yeah, wir sind immer noch relativ klein, aber wir versuchen eine Armee aufzubauen.




Österreich ist kleiner!


Þráinn: Army of Viking Metal-Fans.


Wie ist es in zu Island leben? Ich war noch nie dort!


Þráinn: Es ist gut. Ja, es ist wirklich sehr gut. Es ist ziemlich ... Ich würde sagen, ein außergewöhnlich sicherer Ort. Wir haben kaum Verbrechen, und wir haben nicht viele Probleme. Außer mit der Regierung vielleicht. Nein, es ist gut, dort zu leben. Das Wetter ändert sich zehn Mal am Tag, so dass es einen durcheinander bringen kann, aber wenn du dort aufgewachsen bist ist es cool. Wir haben jetzt zwei aktive Vulkane, das ist auch schön.


Es gibt ein Festival im Sommer in Island mit dem Namen "Eistnaflug" – ihr werdet auch dort spielen. Könnt ihr mir etwas über dieses Festival erzählen?


Björgvin: Dies ist das beste Festival der Welt, so einfach ist das! Nein es ist ein ziemlich kleines Festival im Vergleich zu den Metal-Festivals in Europa zum Beispiel. Das Festival ist im äußersten Osten von Island, in einem sehr, sehr kleinen Dorf. Aber das Festival wird im nächsten Jahr wird das 11. Eistnaflug sein, und das Festival ist noch nie größer gewesen und sie haben den Standort verändert in der Stadt, sind werden nicht in der Sporthalle spielen, denn das Fest war die letzten drei-vier Jahre ausverkauft.


Ist es Indoor?


Björgvin: Ja, es ist Indoor. Es ist nicht klug, ein Outdoor-Festival in Island zu machen, man weiß ja nie wie das Wetter wird. Und im nächsten Jahr wird es einen Rekord an ausländischen Bands geben, ein paar ziemlich große Namen wie BEHEMOTH, CARCASS und ENSLAVED. Wenn du Zeit hast, könntest du auf jeden Fall dorthin fahren.


Zuletzt, als ihr in Wien auf Tour wart, musstet ihr leider vor nur wenigen Leuten spielen, weil die Informationen über die Anfangszeit falsch waren. Viele Menschen waren sehr wütend, dass sie euch nicht gesehen haben. Wie war das für euch?


Þráinn: Zunächst einmal wussten wir nichts von dieser Fehlinformation. Erst sagte der Promoter es ist um 20.00 Uhr und dann schickte er uns um 19.30 Uhr auf die Bühne, so dass wir nicht recht wussten wie uns geschah, aber gut, das Ganze war ein Package, und wir waren auf halber Strecke mit unserem Set, aber die ersten paar Songs waren für uns ein wenig seltsam, aber im Prinzip ist egal wann wir spielen... Wir spielen unsere Show, und wenn es nur vier Leute im Publikum sind, dann spielen wir für sie und es spielt keine Rolle, es ist immer lustig, wie ich dir vorher gesagt habe. Wir sind ziemlich müde nach sieben Wochen auf Tour, aber jedes Mal, wenn wir auf der Bühne sind, ist es einfach der größte Spaß, den wir haben können.


Ich war um 19.30 Uhr dort, aber eine Freundin von mir war erst um 20.00 Uhr da, und sie war sehr wütend.
Mögt ihr die aktuelle Tour? Wie ist der Kontakt zu den anderen Bands?


Björgvin: Diese Tour war wirklich, wirklich gut, und weißt du, die Leute von ARKONA und ELUVEITIE sind die nettesten Menschen. Das war sehr, sehr angenehm und diese Tour war bei weitem die größte Tour, die wir jemals haben, und fast die Hälfte der Shows war ausverkauft, und der Rest fast ausverkauft.

Þráinn: Dies ist das dritte Mal für uns in Österreich und das erste Mal haben wir einige Touristen-Aktivitäten gemacht, so gingen wir heute hinaus um den großen Beethoven zu sehen, und wir sind voll von, wie sagt man, kultureller Inspiration




Ihr habt ein neues Album. Wie waren die Reaktionen auf "Með vættum"?


Björgvin: Wirklich gut. Die meisten Bewertungen sind wirklich sehr, sehr gut und die Fans waren sehr nett zu uns. Wir waren nicht sicher, wie die Fans auf dieses Album reagieren würden, denn dieses Album ist bei weitem das härteste Album, das wir aufgenommen haben, aber es ist das beste von allen dreien und wir sind wirklich stolz darauf. Wir sind auch, weil wir uns beim Aufnehmen dachten: Das ist das, was wir lieben, wenn ihr es mögt, gut, wenn ihr es nicht mögt, dann macht es uns nichts aus. So sind wir eigentlich ganz glücklich und erleichtert, über all die Bewertungen.


Was war die Idee hinter diesem Album?


Björgvin: Nun, die Grundidee dieses Albums ist eine alte Geschichte aus der poetischen Edda über den Geist des Landes. Es gibt eine kurze Geschichte von vier Geistern, die jeweils ein Viertel der Insel schützen. Das war die Inspiration für das Album und das Album ist ein Konzeptalbum von einem weiblichen Charakter, und wir folgen ihr durch das Leben bis zum Tod, und wir folgen ihr von Norden nach Westen und sie wird älter, und dann folgen wir den Jahreszeiten, sodass das Album im Grunde eine Aufteilung in vier Kapitel ist. Zunächst beginnen wir im Norden wo sie jung ist und sie kämpft einen großen Kampf mit einem Vogel, der das Land im Norden schützt, im Osten ist sie eine junge Frau in der Sommerzeit und sie muss kämpfen und wird von einem Drachen unterstützt, sie ist eine reife Frau im Süden, also im Herbst kämpft sie mit einem Riesen und in der Winterzeit im Westen kämpft sie mit einem Stier, wo sie stirbt. Das ist die grundlegende Idee, und das macht den Eindruck, dass diese weibliche Figur der unbekannte Held ist.


Wie beeinflusst Island eure Musik?


Þráinn: Ich denke, wenn wir Songs schreiben, schreiben wir sie in der Art, wie wir aufgewachsen sind. Es gibt viele der Volkslieder und Lieder, die von den Menschen seit Jahrhunderten weitergegeben wurden und die auch Einflüsse gewesen sind. Und ich denke, wenn Sie in einem Land wie Island leben kann man die nicht wegsperren wie wenn man in einer Großstadt leben würde oder in einem Umfeld, das immer das gleiche ist. Wie ich schon sagte, bei uns ändert sich das Wetter zehn Mal am Tag.


Für mich ist es ist ein wenig mystisch, weil ich nie dort gewesen bin.


Björgvin: Könnte an der Sprache liegen...


Gibt es einen Mastermind in der Band für Songwriting oder arbeitet ihr alle zusammen?


Björgvin: Wir arbeiten alle zusammen, wir alle schreiben die Musik, aber unser Bassist Snæbjörn ist der Kopf hinter den Texten. Er kommt mit den Ideen und dem Konzept und dann finalisieren wir das Konzept zusammen, und dann schreibt er die endgültigen Texte.

Þráinn: Einer von uns kommt vielleicht mit einem Riff oder einem Gitarrenpart, und dann hat jemand anderes einen weiteren anderen Teil, und dann mischen wir alles zusammen.

Björgvin: 90 Prozent der Songs sind beim Probe entstanden.


Euer Label ist aus Österreich! Warum habt ihr entschieden zu diesem Label zu gehen?


Þráinn: Warum nicht? Sie zeigten Interesse von Anfang an, und unsere Plattenfirma, die das erste Album veröffentlicht hat, hatte gute Verbindungen zu Napalm Records. So war es eine Art natürliche Sache, und wir sind immer noch hier, das sagt alles.


Ich denke, es ist ein gutes Label!


Þráinn: Heute freuen wir uns darüber.


Kennt ihr Österreich nur von Touren, oder wart ihr auch aus anderen Gründen schon hier, wie zum Beispiel auf Urlaub?


Björgvin: Ich bin nur bei Touren hier gewesen.

Þráinn: Ich war vor ein paar Jahren hier für ein Konzert von KISS.


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Björgvin: Mehr Touren, Festivals, ein neues Album schreiben... wir setzen uns nicht hin und planen allzu viel, wir wollen wirklich genießen was wir tun und wir versuchen, das Beste daraus zu machen. Was passiert, passiert. Wir sind nicht diese Art von Jungs, die etwas zu erzwingen versuchen.

Þráinn: Gute Dinge passieren, wenn man hart arbeitet und wir arbeiten hart, sodass etwas Gutes passieren wird. Ja und so lange wir es genießen in einer Band zusammen zu sein, werden wir es tun. Wir lieben einander immer noch, auch nach sieben Wochen Touring. Oder nicht wahr?
Björgvin: Ja. (stimmt gar nicht)


Einige letzte Worte an eure Fans?


Björgvin: Danke für die Unterstützung, wir würden nicht hier sein, wenn es nicht für unsere Fans wäre, denn dann würden wir noch im Proberaum sein.

Þráinn: Also es ist eine Menge Spaß, im Vergleich zu den ersten Touren im Jahr 2011, jedes Mal wenn wir da in Europa gespielt haben, wurde die Gruppe immer größer und größer. Deshalb möchte ich sagen, ich danke euch dafür.

Björgvin: Es ist kein Spaß Musik zu machen, wenn es kein Publikum gibt.




Wie beim letzten Mal ...


Björgvin: Dann meine ich einfach kein Publikum.

Þráinn: Wenn es vier Leute sind ist es in Ordnung, aber wenn wir nicht die guten Reaktionen sehen würden, dann würden wir nicht in Europa auf Tournee sein.

We had the possibility to talk to Björgvin Sigurðsson and Þráinn Árni Baldvinsson from the Islandic Folk/Viking Metal band SKALMÖLD. They told me a lot about their music and their country.

Nice to meet you here! How are you?


Þráinn: Very good, very good actually, it’s been a long tour, so we’re looking forward to go home, but the shows have been great all along, so we’re actually quite excited to play the two last shows here in Austria.


This show tonight is sold out since four-five weeks, so this is very special. My last interview i had was also with a band form Iceland, SÓLSTAFIR, are you friends with these guys?


Björgvin: Good Friends, very good friends. We have done a lot of shows together back home in Iceland.


Is there a big metal-scene in Iceland?


Þráinn: It´s pretty big. It´s cool! And it´s been growing very fast the last five, six years or so… So now we have a big metal-festival once a year, actually quite a few concerts every year, not as much as you have, but the metal-scene is growing so rapidly, so I hope that this will be something that holds on in Iceland.


How difficult is it for a band from Iceland to become popular?


Björgvin: Well, we are trying, we don´t know yet… (laughs)


I saw you sometimes on stage, last time at Ragnarök festival.


Þráinn: Yeah, i think it actually helps us a bit to be from Iceland, i mean, people think like: oh it´s a rock in the middle of the Atlantic far away, so it´s like something special about it, but it´s nothing special.

Björgvin: Exotic maybe

Þráinn: Exotic, yeah… I think it really helps us.

Björgvin: Yeah, Yeah, we are still relatively small, but we´re trying to build an army.


Austria is smaller!


Þráinn: Army of viking metal fans.


How is it to live in Iceland? I was never there…


Þráinn: It´s good. Yes, it´s very good actually. It´s fairly… I would say exceptionally a safe place. We don´t have a lot of crimes, we don´t have a lot of problems. Except with the government maybe. No, it´s good to live there. The weather changes like, ten times a day, so that can fox with your head, but if you grow up with it, it´s cool. We have two active volcanos now, that´s also pretty…


There is a festival in summer in Iceland named "Eistnaflug" - you will also play there. Can you tell me something about this festival?


Björgvin: This is the best festival in the world, as simple as that, no it´s a pretty small festival, compared to the metal-festivals in Europe, for example... The festival takes place in the far east of Iceland, in a very, very small village...But this festival has been, you know, next year will be the 11th year, the 11th Eistnaflug, and the festival has never been bigger and they have changed locations, in the town, they are not playing in the sportshall, because the festival has been sold out for the last 3, 4 years.


Is it indoor?


Björgvin: Yes, it´s indoor. It´s not wise to play an outdoor-festival in Iceland, you never know... And next year will be a record in foreign bands, some pretty big names like BEHEMOTH, CARCASS and ENSLAVED. If you have a tense, you definitely go there.


Last time when you were on tour in Vienna, you had to play unfortunately in front of only some people, because the information about the beginning time was wrong. Many people was very angry that they haven´t seen you. How was this for you?


Þráinn: First of all, we didn´t know about this misinformation, the promoter said it´s 8 o´clock and then he told us to go on stage at 19.30, so we didn´t know, but well, the whole was packed when we were halfway to our set, but the first few songs were a bit strange, but it doesn´t actually matter when we play.. We play our show, if there four people in the audience, we play for them, it doesn´t matter, it´s always fun, like i told you before, we are quite tired after seven weeks of touring, but every time you go on stage it´s just the most fun you can do.


I was there at 07:30, but a friend of me was here at 8 o´clock, and she was very angry..
Do you like the current tour? How is the contact to the other bands?


Björgvin: This tour has been really, really good, and, you know, the people from ARKONA and ELUVEITIE are just the nicest people. This has been very, very pleasant and this tour, this is by far, the biggest tour that we have done, you know, almost half of the shows has been sold out, and the rest nearly sold out so...

Þráinn: This is our third time in Austria and the first time we actually do some tourists activities here, so we went to see the great Beethoven today, and we are full of, how do you say, cultural inspiration,


You released a new album. What were the reactions to "Með vættum"?


Björgvin: Really good. Most of the reviews we´re really, really good and the fans have been really nice to us. We we`re not sure how the fans would react to this album because this album is by far the heaviest album we have recorded but it´s the best one, it´s the best of all three so we are really proud of it. We we´re also, when we released it we thought: this is what we love, if you like it, good, if you don´t like it, we don´t care. So we are actually quite lucky and relieved about all the reviews.


What was the idea behind this album?


Björgvin: Well the basic idea behind this album is the old story from the poetic Edda about the spirit of the land. There is a short story of four spirits that guard the island, one of each quarter of the island. So that was the inspiration for the album and this album is a concept album of a female character and we follow her from live to death, and we follow her from north to the west and she gets older, and then we follow the seasons, so the album is basically dividing in four chapters, first in the north we´re she is young and we´re she fights a huge battle with a bird who guards the land in the north, in the east she is a young women at summertime and she has to battle and gets assisted by a dragon, she´s a mature woman in the south at autumn we´re she fights with a giant and at wintertime in the west she fights with a bull where she dies. That´s the basic, so that makes it look like that this female character is the unknown hero.


How influences Iceland your music?


Þráinn: I think we write songs the way we write them because of the way we grow up. There´s a lot of folk songs and songs that have been with people for centuries and that influences you. And i think when you are living in a country like Iceland you can´t lock yourself away like in a big city or in an environment that is always the same, like I told you before, the weather changes ten times a day.


For me it´s a little bit mystic, you know, i never been there.


Björgvin: Could be the language…


Is there one mastermind in the band for songwriting or are you working all together?


Björgvin: We all work together, we all write the music, but our bass-player Snæbjörn, he is the mastermind behind the lyrics, he comes with the ideas and the concept and then we finalise the concept together, and then he writes the actual lyrics.

Þráinn: One of us maybe comes up with a riff, or a guitar part, and then somebody else has another different part, and then we mix them all together…

Björgvin: 90 percent of the songs did just happen in the rehearsal.


Your label is from Austria! Why did you decide to go to this label?


Þráinn: Why not? They showed interest in the beginning, and our record label who released the first album has good connection with Napalm Records. So it was a kind of natural thing, and we are still here, this says everything.


I think it´s a good label!


Þráinn: Today we are happy


Do you know Austria only from touring, or have you been here also for other reasons like holiday?


Björgvin: I´ve only been here for touring.

Þráinn: I was here a few years ago for a KISS concert.


What are your plans for the future?


Björgvin: More touring, festivals, write another album… we do not sit down and plan to much, we just really enjoy what we are doing and we´re trying to make the most of it what happens, happens. We´re not that kind of guys who try to force anything.

Þráinn: Good things happen if you work hard and if we work hard something good will happen.
Yeah, and as long we enjoy being in a band together we will do it.
We still love each other after seven weeks of touring. Or isn´t it true?
Yes i do. (is not true)


Some last words for your fans?


Björgvin: Thanks for the support, we would not be here if it was not for our fans, then we will still be in the rehearsal.

Þráinn: So it´s a lot of fun to compare the first touring in 2011, every time we played since in Europe, the group is getting bigger and bigger. So I want to say thank you for it.

Björgvin: It´s no fun playing music if there is not an audience


Like last time…


Björgvin: Then I mean just no audience.

Þráinn: If there four people it´s okay but if we didn´t see the good reaction we wouldn´t be touring in Europe.
