Tausendsassa DEVIN TOWNSEND hat nicht nur ein Album sondern gleich zwei auf einmal veröffentlicht. Während "Sky Blue" ein reguläres Album darstellt, ist "Dark Matters" (beide in "Z2" vereint) die langerwartete Fortsetzung von "Ziltoid - The Omnicient". Da kein Werk dem anderen gleicht konnte man sich auch dieses Mal auf so manch Überraschung einstellen. Darüber sprachen wir mit dem abgefahrenen Genie aus Kanada.




Hey Devin, Gratulation zu deinem neuen Werk – ich habe beide Alben wirklich sehr genossen. Wie schwer war es an zwei Alben zugleich zu arbeiten und wie hast du die Arbeit an „Dark Matters“ und „Blue Sky“ voneinander getrennt?


Danke dir! =) Es war ein wirklich kompliziertes Album und ich arbeite am besten wenn kein Druck da ist, aber der Druck bei „Z2“ war nicht unerheblich wie ich zugeben muss. Der Prozess, in dem mir meine beiden widersprüchlichen Zugänge bewusst wurden, nämlich meinen Wunsch gegen so einen riesigen Berg an Arbeit zu rebellieren vs. die Erkenntnis, dass das einfach eine großartige Chance ist und ich mein Bestes geben muss. Es war beides eine große Herausforderung - die große Arbeitslast und der psychologische Aspekt, dass man es einfach nicht machen will. Man arbeitet sich dann durch diesen erschöpfenden Zustand und wenn man dann das Ergebnis hört, kann man nur sehr stolz sein auf das Album.



Ich war absolut beeindruckt von dem massiven Chor mit tausenden von Fans. Hast du erwartet, dass dir so viele Fans ihre Aufnahmen dafür schicken würden und denkst du, dass du so ein Projekt nochmal machen wirst?


Ich interessiere mich immer für „Kanten“ die ein Album ungewöhnlich und interessant erscheinen lassen. Man denke an das Orchester auf „Deconstruction“, den Gospelchor auf „Epicloud“, die Flöte auf „Ghost“ usw. Das waren Beispiele für diese Art von Energie. Ich denke der große Arbeitsaufwand reserviert diesen Universalchor für spezielle Gelegenheiten und nicht zur Gewohnheit. :)


Ich habe mich sehr über die Story dieses Ziltoid-Abenteuers amüsiert. Am Ende teast du eine Fortsetzung an. Hast du schon Ideen dafür oder wolltest du einfach einen Cliffhanger platzieren?


Nur ein offenes Ende. Ich mag es mir Optionen offen zu lassen, auch wenn ich im Moment null Interesse daran habe Ziltoid-Style Musik zu schreiben.




Falls du kein Ziltoid-Album mehr machst, denke ich war es trotzdem nicht die letzte Begegnung mit Ziltoid, vielleicht sehen wir ihn auf eine andere Art...?


Das kommt darauf an. Jedes Ziltoid-zentrierte Projekt benötigt ein großes Budget, somit müsste von außen ein Investor oder dergleichen kommen, damit es eine kontinuierliche Geschichte werden könnte. Ich genieße das Konzept und womöglich gibt es mehr darüber zu sagen, aber aktuell habe ich absolut keine Idee was das wäre.


Du hast bereits eine Special-Ziltoid Show geplant, was kann man da erwarten und wie viel von ihm wird es auf der nächsten Tour zu sehen geben?


Nicht viel Ziltoid auf der Tour. Ich gehe in eine etwas andere Richtung auf den kommenden DTP Shows (mehr Song-orientiert). Die Ziltoid Shows wo wir komplett durch „Dark Matters“ spielen werden, gibt den Zuschauern hoffentlich eine Idee davon, wie meine Vision für das Album aussah. Ich habe es so gut wie ich mir derzeit leisten kann illustriert und es wird sehr sehr speziell. Faktisch finde ich es sehr beschämend, dass ich es nicht irgendwo anders in der Welt machen kann, denn ich denke, dass es sehr großes Kino wird.


Würdest du dich selbst als Workaholic bezeichnen? – Ich meine es vergeht kaum ein Jahr ohne mindestens eine Veröffentlichung in der du involviert bist.


Nein, ich arbeite viel, aber ich relaxe auch ebenso viel. Ich bin effizient wenn es dazu kommt meine Ideen zu artikulieren und ich liebe was ich tue. Wenn ich es nicht mache, fühlt es sich an als würde ich mein Leben verschwenden. Das ist es was mein Sinn ist, und das genieße ich enorm. Das ist der Grund warum so viel rauskommt, anstatt mich um die anderen Dinge im Leben zu kümmern.




Hast du denn bereits Ideen für dein nächstes Projekt oder was auch immer als nächstes kommt?


Klar, ich habe Ideen für zahlreiche Alben und Projekte. Ich freue mich darauf etwas davon auszuwählen wenn die Inspiration zuschlägt.


Wie war es am CASUALTIES OF COOL Album zu arbeiten und wie kam die Idee etwas so anderes zu machen?


Wie es bei allem was ich mache der Fall ist, kommt die Inspiration langsam und subtil. Nach einer bestimmten Zeit wird klar dass eine bestimmte Idee faszinieren und wichtig für die die Zeit in meinem Leben in der ich mich befinde, ist. Ich habe nur sehr wenig Einsicht oder Kontrolle darüber in welche Richtung sich diese Ideen gehen, das überrascht oft sogar mich, aber ich fühle irgendwie, dass ich durch meinen Lebensstil einiges manipulieren kann.

Hey Devin, congratulations to your new record – i really enjoyed both albums. How hard was it to write two records at the same time and how did you separate the work on “Dark Matters” and “Blue Sky”?


Thanks you =) It was a difficult record in that I do my best work when there is no pressure, and the pressure involved with "Z2" I have to say, was pretty remarkable. The process involved being aware of my contrary disposition and my desire to rebel against being handed such an extreme amount of work, vs the realization that it was a great opportunity and I needed to do my best. It was challenging both in the sheer workload and the psychological aspects of simply not wanting to do it. Working through the fatgue and hearing the results is where my pride lay on this record.


I was impressed by this massive choir with thousands of fans. Did you expect that so much people would send you their vocals and do you think you will do such a project again?


I´m always interested in "angles" that make a record novel and consequently interesting. The orchestra with "Deconstruction", the gospel choir on "Epicloud," the flute on "Ghost" etc. This was an example of that sort of energy. I think the bulk of work it took to assemble the universal choir makes it an effect that will be reserved for special occasions in the future rather than a habit =)



I had much fun with the story of Ziltoids Adventure. At the end of the record you are teasing a sequel. Do you have already ideas or is it just to have an open end?



Just an open end. I like to give myself options, though at this moment I have zero interest in writing Ziltoid styled music.


I guess if you are not doing another Ziltoid record, we will see him in some way again... ?


It depends. Any Ziltoid-centric projects seem to require huge amounts of capital, so if he´s meant to be a continued thing, it would have to be due to a substantial investment from somewhere. I enjoy the concept and there may be more to say, but my current frame of mind has no idea what that may be.


You already planned some Special-Ziltoid Shows, what can we expect in these shows and how much Ziltoid will we get on your upcoming tour?


Not much Ziltoid on the tour, I´ve gone a different direction overall with the upcoming DTP shows (more song oriented). The ziltoid shows play through "Dark Matters" and hopefully give the audience a solid idea of what my original vision was for this album. Its illustrated in the best way I can afford currently, and its going to be very very speacial. In fact, its a real shame I cant do it elsewhere in the world as I think it will be highly entertaining.


Would you call yourself a workaholic? – I mean there is every year at least one release with you on it.


No. I work a lot, but I also relax a lot. I am efficient when it comes to articulating my ideas and I truly love what I do. To not do it makes me feel like I´m wasting my life. Its what my purpose is, and I enjoy it immensely. Thats why a lot comes out, rather than me working to the exclusion of other things in my life.


Are there already ideas for your next record, project or whatever you will release next?



Sure, I have ideas for numerous records and projects. I am happily picking away at any number of them as the inspiration strikes.


How was it to work on the CASUALTIES OF COOL record and how came the idea to make something complete different?



As is the case with all I do, the inspiration comes in slow and subtle ways. After a certain amount of time it becomes clear that a certain idea is intriguing and significant to the time of life I find myself in. I have very little forsight or control over where the directions turn and it often suprises even me, but I feel in some ways I can manipulate what appears by my lifestyle.
