BATTLE BEAST haben einen Senkrechtstart hingelegt, den man sich besser nicht wünschen könnte. Mit SABATON unterwegs zu sein ist sicher auch eine große Chance gewesen. Leider erreichte uns kürzlich die Nachricht, dass Mastermind Anton Kabanen aus der Band flog. Somit haben wir hier ein ganz spezielles Interview, das nur knapp wenige Wochen davor durchgeführt wurde und von dem anbahnenden Unheil noch nichts zu spüren war. Somit lest hier eines der letzten Interviews von Anton als Mitglied von BATTLE BEAST, als er noch freudig in die Zukunft seiner Band blickte.



Hey Anton! Danke, dass du dir Zeit genommen hast. Wie gefällt dir denn die Tour bisher?


Großartig!


Lass uns über euer neues Album „Unholy Savior“ sprechen. Ihr habt ein wirklich großartiges Album auf der Tour zu Präsentieren. Wie fühlst du dich mit dem Material jetzt?


Ich bin froh, dass es endlich draussen ist, denn es war wirklich harte Arbeit. Es war der anstrengendste Prozess in meinem ganzen Leben bisher. Das war, weil ich alle Songs schreibe, arrangiere und so weiter. Matias Kupiainen übernahm den Mix, aber abgesehen davon habe ich alles selber gemacht, außerdem sind viel mehr Details auf diesem Album. Ich wollte Dinge, die ich in der Vergangenheit gelernt habe probieren und verbessern. Ich wollte es perfekt haben, sozusagen. Wir hatten außerdem sehr viele Zeit-Probleme, denn im Sommer standen einige Festival-Shows an. So wurde das Album mehrmals verschoben, was mich ziemlich stresste.


Aber es sieht so aus, als wäre es das wert gewesen. Die Kritiken sind gut und die Fans scheinen es zu mögen und ich habe gehört ihr seid in den finnischen Charts auf Platz eins damit eingestiegen. Hast du das jemals erwartet?


Nein, niemals. Denn an einem bestimmten Punkt hätte ich echt nicht mehr geglaubt, dass das Album jemals das Tageslicht sehen würde. Und als es fertig war, war ich komplett erledigt. Da hatte ich überhaupt keine Erwartungen. Für mich war es erledigt und ich wollte mich endlich wieder wie ein Mensch und am Leben fühlen. Und als die Neugkeit kam, dachte ich mir nur: „Was zur Hölle, das kann nicht sein...“, aber ich denke somit habe ich irgendetwas komplett richtig gemacht, wenn es in den Charts ganz oben ankommt.




Für mich ist es euer bisher abwechslungsreichstes und erwachsenstes Album. Wo siehst du denn die Unterschiede im Vergleich zu den Vorgängern?


Die größten Unterschiede sind im Songwriting, denn es gibt viele Balladen, was neu für BATTLE BEAST ist. Die Songs haben mehr Schichten und Dimensionen. Die vorherigen waren mehr direkter straight forward Heavy Metal. Dieses hat die gleichen Grundelemente, wie die simplen Heavy Metal-Songs, aber ich wollte es etwas aufpeppen. Als Songwriter spüre ich das Verlange zu schreiben, was mir in den Sinn kommt, auch wenn die Ideen komplett anders als sonst sind, wie bei „Touch In The Night“ mit den 80er-Synthie-Pop-Einfluss. Außerdem ist da auch „Angel Cry“ wo alle verschiedenen musikalischen Einflüsse meines Lebens zusammenkommen. Ich mag Sachen wie Jason Backer, der ein großartiger Gitarrist und Komponist ist und Soundtracks von James Horner und so weiter.



Hast du das von Anfang an geplant oder kam das auf natürlich Weise?


Als ich mit dem Schreiben anfing war es viel persönlicher als sonst für mich. Ich meine, alles was ich schreibe ist sehr persönlich und ich stehe hinter allem, egal was passiert. Aber dieses Mal wollte ich zurückblicken können und denken, dass ich einen Soundtrack zu einer bestimmten Periode meines Lebens geschrieben habe. In diesem Sinne ist es auch etwas wie ein Konzeptalbum über die Reise durch die ich als menschliches Wesen gegangen bin.


Wie du sagtest ist „Touch In The Night“ ein wirklich anderer Song. Manche Fans waren anfangs etwas schockiert wenn sie ihn zum ersten Mal hörten. Wolltet ihr etwas provozieren?




Eigentlich hat das Label die Single gewählt. Wir haben in unserer Karriere noch nie eine Single selbst ausgesucht. Aber ich bin glücklich damit, denn die meisten Reaktionen waren gut und es ist etwas über das die Leute reden. Es gab auch so viele Youtube-Views auf das Lyrics-Video wie noch nie und die Likes waren auch viel höher als der rote Balken. Der Song repräsentiert außerdem sehr gut die Gefühle und Emotionen durch die ich ging.


Wie kam die Idee zum Titel „Unholy Savior“?


Das Ganze hat mehrere Bedeutungen für mich, aber die grundsätzliche Bedeutung ist, dass es so eine Art spirituelle Waffe in jedem von uns ist. Wenn man hadert und hinterfragt, was wahr ist und was nicht, dann hängt man an einem Gedanken fest und kann diesen einfach nicht loslassen. Irgendwann kommt man an einen Punkt an dem man genug darüber nachgedacht hat, geht tief in sich und erkennt dann, dass da keine wahre Basis dahinter ist, sondern alles nur in deinen Gedanken passiert. "Unholy Savior" könnte der Charakter sein, der dir die Stärke verleiht, deinen Weg weiter durch all die falschen Gedanken in deinem Leben zu gehen. Darum ist er auch "unholy" weil er genau diese Gedanken zerstört und tötet und dich mehr oder weniger vor Lügen schützt. Wie ich schon sagte, das ist jetzt meine Interpretation.




Hat das Maskottchen auf den Artworks eigentlich schon einen Namen?


Oh nein. Es hat noch immer keinen Namen, es ist immer noch einfach der Löwenmann oder das Biest.


Vielleicht solltet ihr mal einen Wettbewerb dazu starten...


Yeah, das wäre eine gute Idee.


Wie entstehen die Songs bei dir? Schreibst du das Zeug komplett alleine oder gibt es einen Punkt an dem sich die anderen auch einbringen können?


Ich mache das eigentlich komplett alleine. Es ist ziemlich rau, aber ich arbeite eben am besten alleine zu Hause, wo mich keiner stören kann. Manchmal habe ich Ideen einfach beim Spazierengehen oder wenn ich etwas ganz Alltägliches mache, dann muss ich mich gleich hinsetzen und das aufschreiben.




Wie kam eigentlich die Idee zum Bandnamen?


Ich kam schon 2005 auf die Idee. Auch da gibt es eine persönliche Bedeutung, denn der Kampf ist so etwas wie meine Natur, ich habe immer für meine Visionen gekämpft. Das Biest ist mit meinem Sternzeichen verbunden, dem Löwen, so war es ganz natürlich es zum Maskottchen zu machen.


Das letzte Mal habe ich euch in Bayern live gesehen. Da ward ihr Headliner. Auf dieser Tour habt ihr gerade mal 30 Minuten, was nicht sonderlich viel ist. Wie sieht es mit einer Headliner-Tour aus? Ist das zu diesem Zeitpunkt schon denkbar?


Ja ich denke, dass das möglich ist. Wir haben ein paar Auftritte in Schweden und es werden noch mehr dieses Jahr dazu kommen. Ich weiß nicht, ob wir eine komplette Europa-Tour hinbekommen, aber möglicherweise ein kleine. Es könnte sicher in naher Zukunft passieren. Wir müssen da unsere Manager darüber nachdenken lassen. Aber natürlich wollen wir so viele Shows wie möglich als Headliner bestreiten, aber gute Bands zu supporten ist auch großartig. An manchen Punkten kannst du gute Angebote dafür einfach nicht ablehnen.




Ich denke auch, dass die Tour mit SABATON eine perfekte Chance und ein super Package darstellt.


Ja klar. SABATON ist großartig und sie haben eine große Fangemeinde. Unsere Optionen werden immer besser. Wir haben mit NIGHTWISH, POWERWOLF, U.D.O. und ACCEPT gespielt und jetzt eben mit SABATON. Aber jede Band war toll.


Weißt du denn warum sie euch gecovert haben?


Ja, sie wollten uns damit unterstützen. Sie haben gemerkt, dass unsere Band etwas Besonderes hat und so haben sie das Cover gemacht um uns zu supporten. Wir kennen uns seit 2013 und haben uns auf der SABATON-Cruise backstage kennen gelernt, da haben sie uns erzählt, dass sie einen Cover-Song gemacht haben, was wir nicht glaubten und dachten, dass sie Scherze machen. Als ich rausfand, dass das stimmt, dacht eich: „Oh mein Gott, sie haben wirklich ein Cover gemacht!“. Und ich mag es. Es ist erfrischend, den Song in einer anderen Interpretation zu hören.


Möchtest du noch etwas sagen?


Danke an all unsere Fans und den Support und ich hoffe, dass die Leute die neue Platte mögen und nicht ausflippen wegen den neuen Elementen. Ich denke aber es wird jeder darauf etwas für sich finden.

Hey Anton, thanks for taking your time, how do you like the tour so far?


Great!


Let´s talk about your new record “Unholy Savior”. You have a really great record to present on this tour. How do you feel now with the material?


I´m happy that it´s finally out, because it was really hard work. It was the most exhausting process in my life so far. That was, because, i write all the songs, arrange it, record it and so on. It was mixed by Matias Kupiainen, but afar from this I did all the work and there were more details on this one. I wanted to try things I learned in the past and make it better. I wanted everything perfect, so to speak. And there was a lot of time-schedule problems. We had to play a lot of festival shows in the summer. The album got delayed a lot of times, that costs a lot of stress.


But it seems it was worth it. The critics are good and the fans seem to like it and I heard you hit the first position in Finland with the album...did you ever expect this?


No, never. Because at one point at making the album, I thought this one will never see the light of day. And when it was finished I was totally worn out. At this point I had no expectation. For me it was done and I just wanted to feel like a human being and alive again. And when the news came, I was like: “what the hell, that cannot be...”, but I guess something was done totally right when it´s on the first place in the charts.


For me it´s the most diverse and mature record you have done so far. Where do you see the differences in comparison to the former records?


The biggest differences are in the songwriting, there are a lot of ballads, what´s new for BATTLE BEAST. The songs have more layers and dimensions. The previous were more straight forward Heavy Metal. This one has the same element, like in the simple Heavy Metal songs, but I wanted to spice it up. As a songwriter I feel the need to write what comes naturally to me and some ideas are really different, like the song “Touch In The Night” with the the 80-Synth-Pop influence. And there is “Angel Cry” in which many musical influences from my whole live come together. I like things like Jason Backer, he is a great guitarist and composer and soundtrack music from James Horner and so on.


Was this your plan from the beginning or some kind of natural thing?


When I started to write the material, it was more personal than ever to me. I mean everything I wrote was personal and I stand behind it whatever happens. But this time I wanted to look back and think I was making a soundtrack from a certain period of time in my life. In that sense it is a concept album also about the journey as a human being that I was going through.


As you said “Touch In The Night” is a really different song. Some fans were shocked when they heard it the first time. Did you want to provoke a little bit with it?


Actually the record label chose the single. We have never chosen any single in our career. But I am happy with it, because most reactions are good an it´s something people talk about and we had a lot a views on the Youtube-Lyrics-Video. And the like-bar is much bigger than the red one. The song presents the feelings and emotions I went through.


How came the idea of the title “Unholy Savior?


It´s kind of a multidimensional meaning to me. But the key meaning is something like a spiritual weapon inside of you. When you hesitate or question yourself about what is real and what is not real and you have certain believes and you are afraid to let them go. At some point you think deep enough about it you are digging yourself emotionally and see that it has no actual basis certain of your believes. “Unholy Savior” could be the character that could give you the strength to continue the journey through all the false believes in your life. That´s why he is unholy, because he destroys and kills all your precious believes, because it kind of saves you from the lies. As I said, that´s my interpretation.


Does the mascot on the artworks actually has a name?


Oh no. It still has no name, it´s still only the Lion-Man or The Beast.


Maybe you should do a competition.


Yeah. That would be a good idea.


How is the procedure of creating the songs. Do you write them completely alone or do you involve the other people at some point?


I do it actually completely alone. It´s pretty harsh, but I work best alone at home when no one can disturb me. Sometimes a have ideas just by walking outside or doing something normal in my day, then I have to sit down and write it.


How came actually the idea for the bandname?


I came up with the idea in 2005 already actually. It has also a personal meaning, because battle is some kind of my nature, I always fought for my visions. I don´t quit – that´s not my nature. The Beast is connected to my zodiac which is Leo, the Lion, so it was natural to make it to the mascot.


Last time I saw you on stage was in Bavaria where you played as the headliner, this time you have only 30 minutes, that´s not really much. What about a headliner tour? Is that already possible to realize?


Yeah I think it will be possible. We have a few gigs in Sweden and there will be more this year. I don´t know if we can do a full European tour, but maybe a short one. It could be possible in the very near future. We have to let our manger think about the tour. But of course we want to do as much as possible as a headliner, but supporting great bands is always great. On some points you cannot turn down offers from great bands.


I think this tour is a perfect chance for you and with SABATON you are a perfect package.


Of course. SABATON is great and they have much fans. The options get better everytime. We played with NIGHTWISH, POWERWOLF, U.D.O. and ACCEPT and now with SABATON. Every band has been great.


Do you know why they did a cover-song of BATTLE BEAST?


Yeah, they wanted to support us. They saw that our band has something, so they did the cover to give us some support. We know each other since the SABATON Cruise in 2013. We met them backstage and back then they told us, that they covered our song and we didn´t believe them and thought they were joking. When I found it was like “oh my god, they really did a cover”. And I like it, it´s really refreshing to hear it in a new interpretation.


Is there anything left to say?


Thanks to all our fans and the support and I hope that people will like the new record and don´t get freak out because of the new elements. I think everyone will find something on it.
