Anlässlich der Veröffentlichung ihres neuen Albums "In Times" hatten wir die Möglichkeit, mit dem Gründungsmitglied Grutle Kjellson von der norwegischen Progressive Black / Viking Metal Band ENSLAVED zu sprechen.




Hallo! Vielen Dank, dass du mir ein paar Fragen beantworten willst!
Wo bist du im Moment?


Im Moment bin ich zu Hause in Bergen!


Ist es wahr, dass es so viel regnet in dieser Stadt?


Ja, im Moment regnet es nicht, aber wir haben durchschnittlich 215-220 Tage Regen hier, sodass es wirklich sehr viel regnet.

24 Jahre Bandgeschichte von ENSLAVED! Was hat sich für euch verändert in diesen Jahren?


Nun, offensichtlich wurden wir bessere Musiker - besser in allen Bereichen, wir wurden besser beim Produzieren, besser in der Zusammenarbeit was die verschiedenen Arten der Inspiration betrifft und haben uns neue Horizonte eröffnet. Ich denke, die Stärke von ENSLAVED war immer die Freude, neue Originalmusik zu kreieren. Wir können einfach sagen, wir versuchen unsere eigene Lieblingsmusik zu komponieren. Und wir haben keine Angst etwaige Rahmen zu überschreiten, wir haben keine Regeln. Vor 25 Jahren haben wir mit der Band begonnen und wir haben uns offensichtlich sehr weiterentwickelt, sonst wäre es desaströs, wenn wir immer noch auf die gleiche Weise Musik machen würden wie im Jahr 1991.


Wie ist es möglich, eine Band so viele Jahre am Leben zu halten?


Wie ich schon sagte, wir wollten immer weitergehen und nie zurückblicken, nie versuchen, uns zu kopieren, nie zweimal das gleiche Album machen. Ich denke, die meisten Bands sind immer abhängig von den Erwartungen an sich selbst und von der Masse. Sie wollen kein anderes Album machen und bleiben immer beim gleichen Stil und das ist natürlich völlig falsch, denn man kann nicht immer wieder das machen, was man schon gemacht hat. Sie werden dann etwas unoriginell und zu einem Klischee. Ich denke, das ist der Grund, warum die meisten Bands nach vielleicht zwei oder drei Alben auseinandergehen. Das ist absolut nicht das Beste. Wir sind deshalb so lange zusammen und wir haben noch den gleichen Sinn für Musik, den wir vor 25 Jahren hatten. Es ist immer noch lustig, Musik zu kreieren und aufzunehmen, weil wir uns mit so vielen verschiedenen Blickwinkeln den Arrangements und Kompositionen nähern. Es ist einfacher und lustiger - es ist eine gute Zeit!


Wann hast du dich entschieden, ein professioneller Musiker zu werden?


Als wir anfingen waren wir Jugendliche, es ist also eine ziemlich lange Zeit her. Was mich betrifft war ich 17 und ich hörte sehr brutale Songs und hab mich betrunken wie die meisten jungen Menschen. Aber nachdem wir ein paar erfolgreiche Alben hatten, entdeckten wir, dass dies der richtige Weg war. Wir konnten dann die Musik als Hauptberuf machen. Es war immer noch schwer, und wir haben immer noch nebenher gearbeitet und in der Band gespielt, und wir leben in Norwegen, wo alles sehr teuer ist, vor allem für Musiker, denn wir können nicht viel Geld verdienen. Hätte ich meine Arbeit fortgesetzt – ich kündigte meinen Job im Jahr 2001 - aber wenn nicht, dann hätte sich die Band wohl aufgelöst und ich wäre wahrscheinlich ein sehr wohlhabender Mann. Wir entschieden uns für die Musik, und müssen nebenher ein wenig arbeiten. Es ist nicht immer einfach, aber das ist, was wir tun wollen. Also im Grunde wurden wir um 2003 eine professionelle Band und beschlossen, diesen Weg weiter zu gehen.


Einige Mitglieder der Band waren oder sind auch in anderen Bands tätig. Beeinflusst diese Arbeit eigentlich ENSLAVED?


Wir alle haben Nebenprojekte. Wir sind Musiker und es ist cool, von Zeit zu Zeit einige Projekte zu versuchen. Wir alle sind in anderen großartigen Bands, wie Isdal mit AUDREY HORNE, das ist das einzige was gelegentlich schwierig ist, dass wir immer mit den beiden Booking-Agenturen zu sprechen haben. Aber ENSLAVED ist immer die erste Priorität und ENSLAVED ist immer an erster Stelle und so ist es kein Problem. Ich denke, es ist wertvoll, ein wenig verschiedene Dinge zu machen, solange es ENSLAVED nicht beeinträchtigt


Im März werdet ihr ein neues Album mit dem Titel "In Times" veröffentlichen! Was ist die Idee hinter dem Album?


Die Idee ist natürlich zu versuchen, ein Album zu machen, mit dem wir wirklich zufrieden sind. Es ist ein weiterer Schritt nach vorn. Wir haben keinen speziellen Geist, wir arbeiten nicht innerhalb von Rahmen, wir arbeiten nicht nach Erwartungen. Wir wollen einfach nur wirklich gute Musik machen. Wenn wir die Arbeit an einem neuen Album beginnen, haben wir nicht immer einen Plan. Wir arrangieren musikalische Ideen, wir ergeben uns dem Flow und wir versuchen, attraktive Musik zu entwickeln. Dabei achten wir nicht darauf ob diese zu lang oder zu kurz ist, es geht uns nur um Art der Versuche mit diversen Riffs, alles andere hat sich von selbst ergeben und es endet dort, wo es auf natürliche Weise endet. Dieses Mal wurden alle Songs 8-10 Minuten lang. Es sind nur sechs Songs, aber es ist fast eine Stunde Musik. Es ist ein wenig dabei aus dem vorherigen Album, aber auf der anderen Seite ganz anders. Es ist ein wenig dunkler, mystischer, vielleicht epischer. Es ist ein wirklich starkes ENSLAVED-Album und ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung würde ich sagen, und vielleicht das stärkste Album, das wir je gemacht haben, und wir sind sehr stolz darauf.




Warum verwendet ihr eigentlich die englische Sprache für eure Songs?


Es ist eine bessere phonetische Sprache um zu singen - das ist eine Sache. Die andere Sache ist, wir sind eine internationale Band, und wir wollen die Chance geben, die Texte und nicht nur die Übersetzungen zu lesen, denn das wäre nie und nimmer das Gleiche. Es ist also besser, sie in einer Sprache zu schreiben, die dafür gedacht ist. Wir verwenden einige Verse da und dort, und tatsächlich singen wir auf dem Album einige Verse aus dem alten Norden. Wir haben sie in die Texte eingefügt, da sie wirklich gut zur Stimmung passen. Sie erzählen über alltägliche Leben, sie strahlen etwas Wärme aus, sie klingen ein bisschen offensichtlicher und natürlicher in Live-Aufnahmen. Das ist nichts für ein Studio-Album, es ist live immer ein bisschen rauer, durch das Adrenalin bei den Live-Auftritten.


Seid du und Ivar die Songschreiber für ENSLAVED?


Ivar macht die Riffs, und gemeinsam schreiben wir die Texte, und wir alle zusammen arrangieren die Songs. Vor allem ich und Ivar sind auch die Co-Produzenten. Es ist vor allem eine Team-Unternehmung das Material zu schreiben - es ist mehr oder weniger immer Teamarbeit.


Ihr wechselt in euren Songs zwischen dunklen Growls und klarem Gesang. Ist das in allen Alben so?


Es ist in allen Alben so, außer bei den ersten Alben. Wir haben elf Alben auf diese Weise gemacht, und das ist etwas das wir geschaffen haben, um die Balladen mit der Musik zu verbinden, zwischen den harten und melodischen Parts.


Wenn euer Album erscheinen wird, werdet ihr auf einer großen Tour durch die Vereinigten Staaten gehen. Mögt ihr es dort zu spielen?


Die Vereinigten Staaten sind ein guter Markt für uns. Nuclear Blast hat ein neues Büro in Amerika und sie haben einen tollen Job gemacht. Wir hatten viele gute Touren in den Staaten in den letzten sechs, sieben Jahren. Wir haben in den Vereinigten Staaten tatsächlich öfter gespielt als in Europa, das hat einen größeren Markt für uns tatsächlich entwickelt. Wir werden natürlich auch einige Shows in Europa spielen.


Ihr werdet auch beim Inferno Festival spielen in Oslo! Gefällt euch dieses Festival?


Nicht besonders! Es ist cool, zu Hause zu spielen, aber es gibt bessere Festivals, aber es ist okay!


Ist eine Tour durch Europa mit einem Stop in Österreich geplant?


Wir werden voraussichtlich im Herbst auf einer Tour durch Europa sein und da denke ich auf jeden Fall, dass es einen Zwischenstopp in Österreich geben wird.


Kennst du Österreich ein wenig?


Ich war viele Male in Österreich. Wir haben in Salzburg, Wien und Graz gespielt. Ich bin einmal quer durch Österreich gefahren als ich ein Kind war, auf dem Weg in die Ferien ins ehemalige Jugoslawien.


Welche Pläne habt ihr für die Zukunft?

Wir werden den Release machen, dann werden wir natürlich auf Tour gehen – eine Amerikanische und Kanadische Tour, und dann haben wir das Inferno Festival und das Roadburn Festival und einige Festivals in Nordeuropa und in Norwegen im Sommer, und dann werden wir eine größere Tour in Europa spielen, dann werden wir weitersehen. Es könnte eine Australien-Tournee, eine Reise nach Japan und eventuell nach Südamerika noch kommen - wir werden sehen! Die Shows am Ende des Jahres sind noch nicht gebucht, aber es werden mindestens hundert Konzerte in diesem Jahr werden.




Und schließlich ein paar letzte Worte an eure Fans?


Wir hoffen, dass wir bald wieder nach Österreich kommen. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, wann wir zuletzt dort spielten. Es ist vor einigen Jahren gewesen. Danke für die Unterstützung im Laufe der Jahre und sehen uns in Wien oder Salzburg.

On the occasion of the release of their new album “In Times” we had the possibility to talk with founding member Grutle Kjellson from the Norwegian Progressive Black/Viking Metal band ENSLAVED.

Hello! I´m Elisabeth from the Austrian online-magazine earshot! Thank you that you will answer me some questions!

Where are you at the moment?


At the moment I´m at home in Bergen!


Is it true, that there is so much rain in this city?


Yes, but it´s not raining at the moment, but we have proximately 215-220 days of rain here, so it rains a lot.

24 years of bandhistory from ENSLAVED! What changed for you in these years?


Well, obviously we became better musicians, better in all levels, we became better in producing stuff, better in cooperating in different types of the inspiration and open up new horizons. I think, the strong of ENSLAVED has always been the looking forward to create new original music, you can say the simple as try to compose your own favourite music. And we have not been afraid of stepping outside any frames, we had no rules. So we started the band 25 years ago and it has been a huge development obviously, otherwise it would be a kind of disastrous if we did now the same way like in 1991.


How is it possible to keep a band alive for so many years?


I told you, we always wanted to move on and never look back, never try to copy ourselves, never make the same album twice. I think, most bands are getting hang ups in expectations from their selves and from the crowd. They don´t want to make another album and use the same formula, and that is of course totally wrong, because you can´t do anything what you have done before. So you become a little unoriginal and become a cliché. I think that´s the reason why most bands quit after maybe two or three albums. That´s absolutely not the best. We have going for so long, and we still have the same spirit that we have 25 years ago. It´s even funnier to record and create music, because we have so many different angles to approach to the arrangements and compositions. It´s easier and funnier – it´s a good time!


When did you decide to become a professional musician?


When we started we were teenagers, so it is a pretty long time. Speaking for myself I was 17 and I was listening to very brutal songs and get drunk as the most young people. But after we had a couple of successful albums, we discovered that this was the way to go. We were able to held this as dayjobs. It was still hard and we were working a little bit beside, playing in a band, and we live in Norway which is very expensive, especially for musicians, because we cannot earn much money. If I had to continue my work - I quit my job back in 2001 – but if I didn´t and we split the band I would probably be a really wealthy man. We decided to with the music, so we to work a little beside. It´s not always easy, but this is what we want to do. So basically we became a professional band around 2003 and decided to go for it.


Some members of the band were or are also engaged in other bands. Influences this your work with ENSLAVED?


We all have side-projects. We are musicians and it´s cool to try out some projects from time to time. We all took place in other serious bands, like Isdal with AUDREY HORNE, that´s the only we all interference, that we always have to talk with the both booking agencies we have. But ENSLAVED is always the first priority and ENSLAVED always comes first and so it is no problem. I think it is worthy to do a little different things, as long as it doesn´t interfere ENSLAVED.


In March you will release a new album called “In Times”! What is the idea behind the album?


The idea is obviously try to make an album with that we are really satisfied. It´s one more step forward. We don´t have any specific ghost, we don´t work within frames, we don´t work after expectations. We just want to make really good music. When we start working on a new album, we don´t ever have a plan. We just arrange stuff, we go with the flow and we try to develop attractive music. We don´t think if this is too long or this is too short, we just try to kind of treat the riffs of the song like it was all organized – it ends where it´s supposed to end in a natural way. This time all songs are 8-10 minutes. It´s only six songs, but it´s almost one hour of music. It´s a little bit from the previous album we did, but at least very different from “In Times”. It´s a little more darker, more mystical, perhaps more epic. It´s a really strong ENSLAVED album in the right direction I would say, and maybe the strongest album we have ever made, and we are really proud of it.


Why do you use the English language for your songs?


It´s a better phonetical language to sing, that´s one thing, and the other thing is we are an international band, and we want to give a chance to read the lyrics and not just the translations, because that never ever would be the same. So it´s better to write it in a language which is supposed to be written. We use some verses there and there, actually on this album we sing some verses in ancient north. We put it in the lyrics because it suited really good in scenic. It spoke about serious live, it approaches a little bit warm, it sounds a little bit more obviously, more primitive in live recording. It´s not in a studio-album, it always be a little bit rougher live, because the adrenalin of playing live.


Are you and Ivar the songwriters for ENSLAVED?


Ivar is making the riffs, and me and Ivar make the lyrics, and we all arrange the songs together. Especially me and Ivar are also the co-producers. It´s mostly a team-effort to write the material – it´s more or less still teamwork.


You are changing in your songs between dark growling and clear vocals. Is this in all albums?


It is in all the albums, except on the first albums. We have eleven albums this way and that is something we created to contain the ballads with the music, between the harsh and the melodic parts.


When your album will be released you will be on a big tour in United States. Do you like to play there?


The United States is a good market for us. Nuclear Blast has a new office in America and they are doing a great job. We had many good tours in the States in the last six, seven years. We actually toured more in the States like in Europe, this has developed a bigger market for us actually. We will play also some shows in Europe of course.


You will also play at Inferno Festival in Oslo! Do you like this festival?


Not particularly! It´s cool to play at home, but there are better festivals, but it´s okay!


Is there a tour planned in Europe with a stop in Austria?


We will be on a tour through Europe probably in autumn, I think most definitely will there be a stop in Austria.


Do you know Austria a little bit?


I have been in Austria many times. We have played in Salzburg, Vienna and Graz. I was in Austria driving through the country when I was a kid, on the way to make vacation in the former Yugoslavia.



What are your plans for the future?


We will gonna do a release, we will of course make a tour – American and Canadian tour and then we have Inferno Festival and Roadburn Festival, and some festivals in North Europe and Norway in the summertime and then we will have a bigger tour in Europe, and then we will see. It might be a Australian tour, a trip to Japan, South Amerika – we will see! The shows at the end of the year are not booked yet, but it will be at least a hundred concerts this year.


And finally some last words to your fans?


We hope we come back to Austria soon. I can´t remember when we were playing there. It´s couple of years ago. Thanks for the support over the years and see you in Vienna or Salzburg.
