Die Old-School Death Metal Veteranen OBITUARY feierten schon ihren 30. Geburtstag. Nach fünf langen Jahren der Veröffentlichungsabstinenz lieferten die Herren aus Tampa, Florida mit "Inked In Blood" wieder ein fettes Brett ab, das OBITUARY trotz LineUp Wechsel und längerer Pause in verdammt starker Form zeigt. Wir sprachen auf der aktuellen Tour mit Drummer Donald Tardy über die Pause, die moderne Welt und zukünftige Pläne.


Ihr seid jetzt schon ungefähr eine Woche auf Tour; wie läuft es bisher?


Fünf Shows sind durch, und ich denke die meisten davon waren ausverkauft, also läuft es ziemlich gut.




Ihr habt dieses Mal drei Support-Bands mit (POSTHM, DUST BOLT, M-PIRE OF EVIL) – sucht ihr die normalerweise selber aus oder checkt sie vorher ab?


Manche schon, manche nicht. Dieses Mal wurde DUST BOLT von mir ausgewählt, weil ich ihr neues Album liebe. Aber es ist so oder so ein gutes Package, es funktioniert bisher super.


Wie fühlt es sich an nun endlich wieder auf der Bühne zu stehen? Ihr hattet ja eine längere Pause und ich habe gesehen, dass ihr am Summer Breeze wieder richtig viel Spaß hattet. Also wie ist es nun wieder als Headliner unterwegs zu sein?


Es fühlt sich gut an wieder auf einer richtigen Europa-Tour zu sein. Wir haben gerade eine 32-Show Tour in Amerika beendet, also waren wir sehr beschäftigt. Es fühlt sich großartig an wieder hier zu sein und darum haben wir auch weitere Trips hierher geplant um das Album zu promoten.


Merkst du jetzt Unterschiede zur US-Tour?


Nein, es ist eine wirklich aufregende Zeit. Die Leute in den Staaten haben das neue Album bemerkt und haben uns auf den Shows besucht um uns richtig zu unterstützen. Es sieht auch in Europa genauso aus. Die Fans sind extrem aufgeregt was das neue Album betrifft und Gott sei Dank kommen sie auch zu den Shows.




Es hat fast fünf Jahre gedauert um das neue Album herauszubringen – was ist passiert?


Das Leben, denke ich. Wir sind eine viel beschäftigte Band und das waren wir auch in letzter Zeit. Hauptsächlich haben wir uns die Zeit für das Songwriting genommen und natürlich sind wir eine Band die viel auf Tour ist. Wir habe Shows und Festivals gespielt und wir wurden eingeladen eine Classic-Setlist für einen Promoter zu spielen, was sich in eine Welttournee entwickelte auf der wir Songs der erste drei Alben spielten. Es hat alles viel länger gedauert als wir uns jemals vorstellten, aber wir setzen uns nie Deadlines, wir machen uns einfach keine Sorgen darüber wie lange etwas dauert. Wenn die Songs fertig sind, sind sie fertig. Und wenn die Zeit zum Aufnehmen kommt, das spüren wir wenn es soweit ist und natürlich hat auch das etwas Zeit in Anspruch genommen.


Dann nehme ich an es fühlt sich jetzt großartig an es auf dem Markt zu haben...


Yeah, das tut es. Wir sind sehr stolz darauf, vor allem weil die Band es selbst im Alleingang aufgenommen hat. Die Reaktionen sind extrem positiv und ich denke die Fans haben viel Spaß an dem Album.


Ihr hattet dazwischen ein paar Änderungen im LineUp, was ist da passiert?


Es ist nicht wirklich wichtig was passiert ist. Das Wichtige ist, dass zwei neue Mitglieder dabei sind und uns endlich ein solides und aufregendes Gefühl im Bandgefüge gegeben haben. Terry war schon lange Freund der Band, also war es ein natürlicher Übergang, außerdem ist er ein Easy-going Dude, sehr professionell auf der Tour und ein Veteran was das Leben aus dem Rucksack betrifft, genauso wie der Rest von uns. Dann sprang Ken ein, nahm sein Zeug für das Album auf, wurde Teil der Band und nahm die Sache wirklich ernst – es war so erfrischend ihm bei der Arbeit zuzusehen. Er kam mit seinem eigenen Style daher, verband diesen aber auch mit etwas Alan West und James Murphy –Style. Diese Kombination passt perfekt in die Band.



Wie kam die Idee zum Titel „Inked In Blood“.

Es war anfangs nur ein Songtitel. An einem bestimmten Punkt dachten wir über den Titel nach, weil wir ja schon mitten in den Aufnahmen waren und John schmiss mit ein paar seiner Texten um sich, woraus dann Songtitel wurden. Wir fragten Andreas Marshall unseren Artwork-Artist was er denkt. Und als er den Titel „Inked In Blood“ hörte, meinte er, dass er eine geniale Idee dafür hat. Als wir es sahen fiel uns die Kinnlade runter. Es ist so plastisch, großartig und brutal. Und so wurde es zum Albumcover.




Ist es nach wie vor so dass John einfach Texte schreibt die zur Musik passen und cool klingen?


Ich denke dass heute mehr Bedeutung dahinter steckt als damals, als er noch jung waren, aber er behält die Texte für sich und sind immer sehr fantasievoll und eben John Tardy-like. Es gibt keine Erklärungen zu den Texten zu finden, aber ich denke du kannst das Meiste schon verstehen, was John auf diesem Album zu sagen hat.


Wo siehst du denn die Unterschiede zu den letzten Alben?


Ich weiß nicht, ich denke auch nicht, dass wir versuchen anders zu klingen. Wir sind glücklich mit dem OBITUARY-Style, den Fans lieben und erwarten diesen ja auch. Es wäre töricht daran etwas zu ändern. Wir sind froh über den Stil und die Platte klingt nach klassischem Old-School OBITUARY, worauf wir sehr stolz sind.


Ist der Ablauf beim Schreiben und Aufnehmen der Songs noch immer der selbe wie damals?


Yeah, es ist immer noch das gleiche. Trevor und ich starten mit der Musik und normalerweise kommt einer von uns mit einem Riff oder Beat daher. Daraus erarbeiten wir uns einen Song. John steigt dann dort ein wo er denkt dass er einen guten Part zum Singen gefunden, so hat er direkten Einfluss auf uns. Auf diesem Album hatten wir die Chance Terry und Ken die Riffs zu präsentieren, und sie gaben uns ihre Meinung dazu, vielleicht hörten wir darauf, vielleicht auch nicht – wer weiß. (lacht)
Aber es war zumindest eine Bandarbeit aus Kameradschaft und Bruderschaft und so eine Art von Aussagen wie „der Song rockt“, oder „was wäre wenn wir das oder das mache“. Es war gut mal einen kompletten Bandeinfluss im Studio zu haben.


Wann habt ihr die Songs geschrieben? Ist das in einer Session passiert oder über die letzten Jahre hinweg?


Es war ein langer Prozess. Wir haben einige der Songs vor vier Jahren geschrieben, andere erst beim Entstehungsprozesses des Albums. Somit liegen Jahre zwischen den Songs. Aber wenn du dir das Album anhörst, merkst du dass jeder Song sein ganz anderes Feeling und seinen eigenen Vibe hat. Es ist sehr abwechslungsreich geworden, was eben daran liegt, dass viele Jahre dazwischen liegen.




Ihr habt das Album mit Kickstarter finanziert – wie kam diese Idee?


Wir haben gedacht, dass wir das Album auch ganz alleine aufnehmen können, wenn wir finanzielle Hilfe bekommen – somit mussten wir kein Label darum bitten. Und das war es, was wir mit Kickstarter machten. Wir fragten also unsere Fans ob sie das Album vorbestellen und so kam der größte Teil des Geldes herein. Das war großartig. Wir haben genug Geld hereinbekommen um das Album aufzunehmen, zu mixen und zu mastern. Auch das Artwork war somit finanziert, wir hatten somit ein finales Produkt in der Hand. Wir haben dann Relapse dazu verwendet um die Platte zu pressen und in die Läden zu bringen. Außerdem nutzten wir ihre Marketing-Möglichkeiten.


Also würdet ihr das nochmal machen?


Vielleicht.


Ist es wahr, dass ihr nicht das komplette Geld bekommen habt, das eigentlich über Kickstarter eingenommen wurde?


Ja so in etwa, aber das ist etwas was ich nicht zu diskutieren wünsche. (grinst)


Nach mehr als 30 Jahren im Geschäft, gibt es da Dinge die du aus der guten alten Zeit vermisst?


Ney... alles ist besser jetzt. Wir haben die Technologie, das Internet, so können wir mit den Fans und Familien jederzeit kommunizieren. Und die Fans kommen auch heute noch – also Daumen hoch dafür. Wir sind sehr froh über die moderne Metal Welt, wie sie jetzt ist.




Also genießt ihr das Tourleben noch genauso?


Ja, das tue ich.


Wie sieht es denn mit dem TARDY BROTHER Projekt aus?


Wir haben neues Zeug, aber OBITUARY hält uns auf Trapp, was eine gute Sache ist. Erst die Prioritäten und dann wird es ein TARDY BROTHERS Album geben, denn wir hatten viel Spaß an der Arbeit zum ersten Album.


John, ich habe mich immer gefragt, wie du herausgefunden hast, dass du auf diese Weise Singen kannst. Ich meine, vor 30 Jahren gab es noch nicht viele Death Metal-Bands und Sänger die in diesem Stil sangen...


John: Ich weiß es nicht genau. Es war eine Art von langsamer Transformation. Ich habe mit Sachen wie NASTY SAVAGE oder SAVATAGE angefangen. Dann stellte sich heraus, dass Dinge wie VENOM mehr Einfluss hatten....
Donald: Ich denke es war eine natürliche Entwicklung. Niemand hat großartig begonnen damals. Es war verrückt. Wir wollten herausfinden was wir wirklich sind. An dem Punkt an dem Trevor immer heavyier und heavyer spielte, fand Johns Stimme heraus was sie damit anstellen kann, was er heute noch tut. Einfach Entwicklung – Evolution!




Wie du sagtest, habt ihr noch mehr Tourneen geplant und werdet auch sicher die Festivals nicht auslassen, also denke ich dass es noch keine Pläne für ein weiteres Album gibt...


Oh Gott, nein! Sag nicht diese Worte, die sind nicht erlaubt... nein es gibt noch kein „nächstes Album“. Wir werden das ganze Jahr beschäftigt sein. 2015 ist komplett in Planung und das wird sich wohl auch in 2016 ziehen. Wir wollen so viel wie möglich mit dem „Inked In Blood“ Album touren. Es hat lange gedauert es zu schreiben und wir sind so stolz darauf. Die Fans, nein jeder verdient es, es auch live hören zu können. So versuchen wir in jede Ecke des Planeten zu kommen und das kann etwas dauern.


Aber die eine Sache wollen die Fans trotzdem wissen – sie wollen nicht nochmal fünf Jahre auf ein neues Album warten.


(lacht) Nochmal, wir haben keine Deadlines. Aber wir haben viel Spaß daran, also hoffentlich dauert es nicht wieder so lange.


Dann sind wir durch, möchtest du noch etwas sagen?


Wir sind einfach stolz auf unsere Fans und wir hoffen sie genießen das neue OBITUARY Album genau so sehr wie wir selbst.

You are on the road for about one week now; how is it going so far?


Five show so far and i think most of them have sold out, so it´s going very well.


You have three support-bands this time (POSTHUM, DUST BOLT, M-PIRE OF EVIL) – do you choose them by yourself or do you check them out before a tour?


Some we do, and some we don´t. On this one DUST BOLT was my handpicked, because I love their new album. But yeah, it´s a good package, it works well so far.


How does it feel to be back on stage finally? You had a long break and I saw that you had on the Summer Breeze already much fun. So how is it to be finally on a headliner-tour again?


It feels good to be on a real European tour. We just finished a 32-show tour in America, so we have been very busy. It feels great to be back here and we gonna have a few more trips here supporting this album.


Do you feel differences now in comparison to the US-Tour?


No, it´s a really exciting time now. The people in the US took notice about our new album and came to our shows to support us. It seems it´s the same here in Europa. The fans are extremly excited about this new album and thank god, they coming out to see the shows to.


It took almost five years to take out the new record – what happened?


Life, i think. We are a very busy band and we stayed busy. We mainly took our time in the writing process this time and of course we are a band that is much on tour. We did shows and festivals and we were invited to play a classic setlist for a promoter and that turned to world tour to play songs of the first three albums. It took a lot longer we ever imagined, but we never put a timeline on the band, we don´t worry about how long it takes. There is no deadline for us. When the songs are ready, they are ready. And when it comes to the recordings, we know when it´s ready to go and it took a little bit of time.


So I guess it feels great now to have it out...


Yeah, it does. Very proud of it, because the band recorded it by them self. The reactions are extremely positive and I think the fans are really enjoying this album.


You had again a few lineup-changes. What happened?


It doesn´t really matter what happened. The important thing is, two new members of the band made it finally that the bands feeling really solid and exciting. Terry has been a friend of the band for a long time, so it was a easy transition and a easy-going dude, very professional on tour and he is a veteran of living out of a backbag on tour like the rest of us. And then Ken stepped in and performed on the record, being a part of the band and took his role very serious – it was a refreshing thing looking at him working on it. He stepped in with his own style along with bringing some Alan West and James Murphy style. This combination fits very good in the band.


How came the idea of the title “Inked In Blood” ?


The title was just a songtitle. At one point we were thinking about a title because we were already recording the record and John threw some of his lyrics around and that became song titles. We asked Andreas Marshall, our Artwork-artist what does he think. And he heard the title “Inked In Blood” and so he said that he had a brilliant idea for this. When we saw it, it was just jaw dropping, you know. It´s so graphic, awesome and brutal. And that´s how it became the album cover
.

Is it still the same that John just writes lyrics that fits and sound cool?


I think there is more meaning nowadays then when he was young, but he keeps his lyrics always to himself and he keeps it very fantasy and John Tardy-like. There is not full lyrics-sheets for everyone to grab their hands on but you can understand most what he is saying on this album, i believe.


What are the differences in comparison to the former records?


I don´t know, i don´t think we try to sound different. We are happy with the OBITUARY-style and the fans have come to love it and expecting it. It would be foolish to make any changes. We are happy with the style and it sound like classic OBITUARY and we are proud of that.


Is it also still the same how you create and record the songs?


Yeah, it´s still the same thing. Me and Trevor are starting with the music and usually we come with a guitar riff or a drum beat. We just kind of work it into a song. And John jumps in when he thinks this is a good spot to sing, so he give us his influence. With this new album we had the chance to let Terry and Ken hear some of the riffs and they gave us their sense about it, rather or not we listened to it – how knows (laughs)
But at least it was a group effort of a really comradely and brotherhood and just kind of saying “this song rules”, or “what if we did this or this”. It was good to have a whole band influence at the studio.


When did you write the songs? Was it in sessions or did they crow in the last couple of years?


It was a long process. We wrote some of these songs four years ago and some during the process of making the album. So there are years in between of these songs. But I think, if you listen to the album you can feel that every song got its own vibe and feeling. There is a wide variety on this album and that´s because of there are years in the writing process.


You started the record via Kickstarter – how came this idea?


We had the idea that we can actually record an album on our own if we have financial help, so we don´t need to ask a record label for this. And that´s what we did with Kickstarter, so we asked the fans to pre-order the record and that was the main majority of the money. The People put up the money first and pre-ordered the record. That was great. We raised the money to record, mix and master the entire album. Also the album cover was finished, it was a final product in our hand. And we used Relapse to simply get it pressed and moved in every store, and of course the marketing campaign.


So you would do it again?


Maybe.


Is it true that you didn´t get the whole money, you raised in the first place?


Yes something like that, but this isn´t anything i wish to discuss (laughs).


After more than 30 years in business, are there some things you miss today back from the early days?


Ney... everything´s better now. The technology is there, the internet is there, so we can communicate with fans immediately and the fans still show up. So thumbs up for that. We are very happy about the modern-day metal world right now.


So you still enjoy the tourlife?


Yeah, I do.


What about the TARDY BROTHERS project?


We have some new stuff, but OBITUARY is keeping us very busy, which is a good thing. Priorities first and there will be another TARDY BROTHERS record, because we had fun doing the first one.


John, I was always asking myself – how did you actually find out that you can sing this way. I mean 30 years ago when you started there where not many Death Metal singers out there...


John: I don´t know it exactly. It was a sort of slowly transformation. I started with things like NASTY SAVAGE and SAVATAGE. Then it turned out VENOM was more of a influence.
Donald: I think it was a natural progression. No one started great back in the days. It was weird. Where wanted to figure out what we really where. At the same time Trevor was getting heavier and heavier, John´s voice somehow figured out what he could do with it and he still does now. Just Transformations – Evolution!


As you said you planed more tours and you surely will do the festival-season, so i guess there are no plans for another record at the moment...


Oh god no! Don´t say that words, those are not allowed to... no there´s no next record yet. We gonna be busy for this whole year. 2015 is already in the making and it will push out in 2016. We really want to tour as much as possible with this “Inked In Blood” album. It took a long time writing it and we are really proud of it. The Fans, no everybody deserves to see some of it. So we try to get to every corner at the planet and that could take a while.


But one thing is – people want to know that they don´t have to wait for another five years


(laughs) Again, we don´t put deadlines. But we have fun now, so hopefully it won´t take that long.


So, that´s it, is there anything left to say?


We´re just proud of our fans and we hope they enjoy our new OBITUARY album as we do.
