Die Russisch-Tschechische Pagan/Folk Metal Band WELICORUSS kommt Mitte Jänner für zwei Konzerte nach Österreich. Am 17.1.2015 werden sie in Graz auftreten und am 18.1.2015 in Wien. Zur Einstimmung auf die Konzerte hatten wir die Gelegenheit, der Band einige Fragen zu stellen, die sie uns auch ausführlich beantwortet haben.

Warum sind so viele gute Pagan Metal Bands aus Russland?


Hallo! Vielleicht ist es wegen der langen russischen Geschichte, die voll von Ereignissen und Helden ist? Viele Legenden, Märchen und Geschichten, die dort erzählt werden. Ich weiß nicht, warum - vielleicht weil diese Musik nur in unseren Adern fließt!




Wie wichtig ist Russland für eure Musik?


Russland ist unsere Mutter, und wie jede Mutter nimmt sie in unserem Leben einen wichtigen Platz ein. Und ich meine nicht unsere heutige Regierung und den Staat, sondern das alte Russland und seine Kultur, Erbe und Herkunft.


Was inspiriert eure Musik?


Derzeit haben sich unsere Vorstellungen von der "typisch heidnischen" Sphäre in die Kategorie "weltweit" verschoben. Jetzt haben wir mehr Interesse an den globalen Dingen - und auch hier meine ich nicht die Politik oder auch die materialistischen Dinge - sondern die mystischen, kosmischen, und vielleicht sogar "okkulten" Themen. Die Inspiration kommt in den besonderen Momenten des Lebens, wenn man beginnt klar eine bestimmte Tatsache der Wirklichkeit zu erkennen.


Ist die mystische Geschichte Russlands wichtig für die Menschen, die dort leben?


Was meinst du? Ich kann nicht sagen, dass es so etwas wie mystische Geschichte gibt! Geschichte ist eine Wissenschaft, und es ist schwierig, dazu Mystik hinzuzufügen. Mystik ist etwas, das immer parallel mit der Realität existiert und das ist schwer zu beweisen. Sie basiert meistens auf den nationalen Überzeugungen. Lass mich so sagen, ein Teil des russischen Volkes glaubt tatsächlich an Geister, Kobolde und Werwölfe, aber nicht mehr als in den europäischen Ländern, glaube ich!


Ist es schwierig, als Musiker in Russland zu leben?


Das ist ziemlich knifflige Frage. Ich denke, es ist viel schwieriger als in Europa, weil wir keine angemessenen und Arbeits- und Urheberrechtsgesetze haben und es gibt kein Heavy-Music-Show-Business. Es bedeutet, dass Bands (vor allem die jungen) hart arbeiten müssen um davon leben zu können, und etwas in ihre eigene Musik investieren zu können. Einige Labels zahlen nicht für ihre Musiker.


Warum seid ihr nach Tschechien übersiedelt?


Das ist eine Weiterführung der vorherigen Frage und ich werde ich auf diese antworten - ich bin hierher gekommen um zu leben, zu studieren, mich selbst weiterzuentwickeln und mehr Musik zu machen. Hier unsere Musik mehr gefragt als in Russland und hier wissen die Menschen, was zu tun ist, um die maximalen Ergebnisse zu erreichen. Und weiters sind gute Labels nicht an einer Zusammenarbeit mit Bands interessiert, die so weit weg in Sibirien beheimatet sind - das ist etwa 6500 km von Europa entfernt.


War es schwierig, Russland zu verlassen?


Ja, es war nicht so einfach. Ich habe immer noch Verwandte und Freunde dort, die ich wirklich sehr vermisse. Viele psychische Verbindungen und Fixpunkte wurden dort gelassen, aber hier ist das neue Leben, so versuchen wir, ohne einen Blick in die Vergangenheit nach vorne zu gehen.


Wann werdet ihr ein neues Album veröffentlichen?


Das neue Album "Az Esm", was sehr wichtig und wertvoll für uns ist, ist völlig fertig und wartet nur noch darauf, veröffentlicht zu werden. Wir suchen aktuell ein Label, das dies tun möchte, und es so viel wie möglich auf der ganzen Welt publik machen möchte.




Mögt ihr es auf Tour zu sein?


Natürlich! Tour ist eine Sache voller Emotionen und Gefühle! Wir lieben es viel zu reisen und neue Leute zu treffen! Ich denke, es ist offensichtlich, weil die meisten Musiker es lieben, auf Tour zu sein.


Ist dies das erste Mal, dass ihr nach Österreich kommt?


Ja, es ist unser erster Besuch in Österreich und wir sind bereit, voll Freude zu spielen und die maximale Energie in Graz und Wien zu geben!


Was kann das Publikum von der Show erwarten?


Wir werden versuchen, eine Atmosphäre von Mystik der alten Welt zu präsentieren und ihnen das Gefühl zu vermitteln, worüber wir singen. Die Hauptsache bei einer Show ist Energie und wir werden versuchen, Ihnen ein Maximum davon zu geben!


Was magst du mehr - eine Headliner-Show oder auf einem Festival zu spielen?


Es spielt keine Rolle! Es ist wichtiger, ob die Leute auf uns warten und unsere Musik hören wollen.


Was sind Eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Wir planen viele Konzerte in ganz Europa für 2015 und wir wollen unser Album so weit wie möglich verbreiten. Wir haben vor, im Frühjahr 2015 einem Videoclip des Titelsongs zu veröffentlichen, und am Beginn des nächsten Herbstes planen wir unsere erste DVD über unsere Band herauszubringen und auch die ganz neue Single.




Gibt es noch andere Dinge, die ihr Ihren Fans sagen möchtet?


Ich möchte hinzufügen, dass heutzutage Musik zu machen sich zu einem sehr grausamen Business entwickelt hat, und viele Musiker tun oft ihre Arbeit so automatisch und unmerklich, singen über Dinge die weder Wert noch Bedeutung haben. Wir haben einen Teil unseres Lebens in dieses neuen Album gelegt, und es ist nicht nur so zum Spaß oder aus einer Alkohollaune entstanden. Unsere Musik ist eine Art rituelle Handlung oder Meditation, und das worüber wir Singen ist wirklich wichtig für uns, und wir würden es sehr gerne haben, wenn unsere Hörer verstehen, was unser Album bedeutet.

The Russian / Czech Pagan / Folk Metal band WELICORUSS will come in mid-January for two concerts to Austria. On 17.1.2015 they will be performing in Graz and at 18.01.2015 in Vienna.
To set the mood into the concerts we had the opportunity to ask the band some questions and they have answered us in detail.

Why are so many good Pagan Metal Bands from Russia?


Hi! Maybe it is because of Russian long history, which is full of events and heroes? Lots of legends, tales and stories are being told there. I don’t know why – maybe this music is just flowing in our veins!


How important is Russia for your music?


Russia is our Mother, and as every mother, she takes an important place in our life. And I mean not our today’s government and state, but the ancient Russia (Rus’) and her culture, heritage and origins.



What inspires your music?


Currently, our ideas have moved from the “typical pagan” sphere to “worldwide” category. Now we are more interested in the global things – and, again, I don’t mean politics or even the materialistic things – but the mystic, cosmic, and maybe even “occult” themes. The inspiration comes at special moments of life, when you begin to clearly recognize a certain fact of reality.


Is the mystic history of Russia important for the people who live there?


What do you mean? (I can’t say, that there is such thing as mystic history) History – is a science, and it is difficult to apply the mystic to it. Mystic is something that always exists in parallel with reality and that is difficult to prove. It is mostly based on national beliefs. Let me say, some part of Russian people actually believe in spirits, goblins and werewolves, but not more than in European countries, I think!


Is it difficult to live as a musician in Russia?


This is pretty tricky question. I think, it is way more difficult than in Europe, at least because we don’t have any adequate and working copyright law and there is no any heavy music show business. It means that bands (especially the young ones) have to work hard to live and to invest into their own music. Any labels do not pay to musicians.


Why have you moved to Czech Republic?


Continuing to answer to the previous question I’ll answer to this one also – I came here to live, study, develop myself and to make more music. Here our music is more demanded than in Russia and here people know what to do with it to reach the maximum of results. More than, good labels are not interested in the cooperation with bands located so far in Siberia – it is about 6500 km from Europe.


Was it difficult to leave Russia?


Yes, it wasn’t so easy. I still have relatives and friends, who I miss really much. Many psychological links and attachments were left there, but here is the new life, so we are trying to go forward without looking to the past.


When will you release a new album?


The new album “Az Esm”, which is very important and valuable to us, is completely ready and just waits for the moment to be issued. We are currently looking for the label, which could do this and promote it around the world as much as it is possible.


Do you like to be on tour?


Of course! Tour is a thing full of emotions and feelings! We love to travel and to meet new people so much! I think, it’s obvious, because most of musicians love to be on tour.


Is this the first time you will come to Austria?


Yes, it is our first visit to Austria and we are ready to play on ten and to give maximum of energy in Graz and Wien!


What can the audience expect from your show?


We’ll try to make an atmosphere of mystics of ancient world and to make them feel what we are singing about. The main thing in show is energy and we’ll try to give you maximum of it!


What do you like more – play a headliner-show or on a festival?


It doesn’t matter! It’s more important whether people wait for us and want to hear our music.


What are your plans for the future?


We are planning lots of concerts around whole Europe on the upcoming year 2015 and we want to spread our album as wide as it is possible. We plan to issue it in spring 2015 with a video clip of the title song, and closer to next autumn we are planning to issue our first DVD about our band and also the very new single.


Are there any other things you want to tell to your fans?


I would like to add that nowadays music has become a very cruel business, and many musicians often do their job so automatically and insensible, singing about the things that have neither value nor meaning. We have placed a part of our life in this new album, and it is not just for fun and alcoholic spree. Our music is a kind of ritual action or meditation, and the things we are singing about are really important for us, and we would really like if our listeners understood, what is our album about.
