Mitte Jänner veröffentlicht die Schwedische Black Metal Band MARDUK ihr 13tes Studioalbum mit dem Titel „Frontschwein“. Wir hatten die Gelegenheit mit dem Kopf der Band und Gitarrist Morgan "Evil" Håkansson ein Gespräch zu führen, in dem er über allerlei Dinge erzählt hat und auch über die große Freude, 2015 wieder am Kaltenbach Open Air aufzutreten.

Vielen Dank, dass du mir einige Fragen beantwortest.
Wo bist aktuell?


Ich sitze zu Hause und bereite das kommende Album und die kommenden Touren vor.




2015 werdet ihr 25jähriges Jubiläum mit MARDUK feiern und da sind große Tourneen in Australien, Japan und Europa geplant. In Australien werdet ihr mit INQUISITION spielen - gibt es eine Freundschaft zwischen MARDUK und INQUISITION oder wurde dies von einer Booking-Agentur entschieden?


Ich würde sagen es ist eine Freundschaft, aber wir sind nicht wirklich in Kontakt, aber wir haben in den USA zusammen getourt und wir kennen uns, und es ist großartig, wieder mit ihnen zu touren. Wir sind in Australien auf Tour mit ihnen, und wir werden in Neuseeland und Japan spielen, und danach werden wir in Europa auf eine 30 Tage Headliner-Tour gehen, ein paar Tage davon im Rahmen eines Festivalpaketes und dann würden wir gerne in Südamerika spielen.


Ich war gerade auf der Liste mit euren Tourdaten - die ist sehr lange!


Nicht alles ist angekündigt und weitere Termine werden bald kommen!


In Japan werdet ihr mit mehreren Bands touren. Habt ihr viele Fans dort und gibt es einen Unterschied zwischen europäischen und japanischen Fans?


Ich glaube, es gibt keinen großen Unterschied. In Japan gibt es nicht so viele Extreme Metal-Shows wie in Europa. Ansonsten glaube ich nicht, dass es einen großen Unterschied gibt. Ich denke, es ist mehr oder weniger wie auf der ganzen Welt. Menschen genießen die Musik und die Texte und bilden eine Einheit. In Japan haben wir zweimal gespielt. Zum ersten Mal im Jahr 1999 und dann waren wieder im Jahr 2013 dort. Nun wird es nicht so lange dauern bis wir zurückkommen.


Und dann im April die Hatefest-Tour durch Europa mit SIX FEET UNDER, VADER, DEBACHERY, EISREGEN und HATE. Sind einige der Bands spezielle Freunde von euch?


Wir haben viele Jahre mit VADER getourt, wir verstehen uns sehr gut und teilen viele Interessen, so ist es immer eine Freude, auf Tour mit VADER zu sein.


Ihr werdet auch nach Wien zu kommen mit dieser Tour – kennt ihr Österreich ein bisschen oder nur vom Touren?


Ich kenne Österreich nur von Touren, aber wir haben in Österreich rund 16 Mal gespielt, also haben wir eine ganze Menge gesehen. Es ist ein fantastisches Land, ich mag es, und es ist immer schön, in Österreich zu sein!


Ihr werdet auch zu Kaltenbach Open Air kommen - dieses Festival ist für die österreichische Metal-Szene sehr wichtig. Ich wohne ganz in der Nähe dieses Festivals. Seid ihr schon einmal dort gewesen?


Es ist in einer so schönen Gegend. Wir haben bei diesem Festival schon einmal gespielt. Wir hatten eine tolle Zeit dort, und wir freuen uns schon sehr darauf wieder dort zu spielen.


Was magst du mehr - auf einer Tour zu spielen oder auf einem Festival?


Auf einem Festival kann man immer Probleme mit dem Equipment haben und die Wechsel sind sehr schnell. In dieser Hinsicht bevorzuge ich es in Clubs zu spielen. Es ist großartig, auf Festivals zu spielen, wenn sie gut organisiert sind, aber es ist schwer zu sagen, bevor wir dort auftreten. Aber wenn wir das tun können was wir möchten, ist es großartig.


Im Januar werdet ihr euer 13. Album "Frontschwein" veröffentlichen. Warum habt ihr diesem Album diesen deutschen Namen geben, und was ist die Idee hinter dem Album?


Es ist kein Konzeptalbum, aber es ist rund um den Zweiten Weltkrieg angesiedelt und betrachtet ihn aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln. jeder kennt die Bedeutung von "Frontschwein" - sie waren an der Front haben eine schmutzige Arbeit gemacht und haben die Scheiße abbekommen. In jedem Land haben sie dafür ihre eigenen Worte, aber "Frontschwein" klingt großartig und es spiegelt den Geist des Albums und das Thema des Albums wieder und auch wenn wir kommen und Extreme Metal spielen. Wir sind immer an der Front und immer on the road. Wir sind die "Frontschweine" von dem, was wir machen!





Mögt ihr die deutsche Sprache, oder ist sie nur zweckmäßig für eure Songs?


Ich mag die deutsche Sprache! Sie ist ein Ausgangspunkt für die schwedische Sprache.


Bist du der Songwriter?


Ich bin einer der Songwriter und es ist an mir, die Lyrics zu schreiben. Wir arbeiten alle an der Musik und treffen wir uns in unserem Probe-Bunker und sehen was wir haben. Es ist eine Band-Aufgabe - wir arbeiten immer zusammen.


Wo findet ihr die Ideen für eure Songs?


Das ist verschieden von Song zu Song und von Album zu Album. Manchmal hat man Visionen zu einem Thema. Ich lese sehr viel Geschichte und das hilft um etwas zu schaffen. Ich habe den Soundtrack von vielen historischen Happenings geschrieben, weil es für mich selbstverständlich ist, Soundtracks zu erstellen. Ich bin Spion über Dinge die die Leute im Leben hassen. Und dass die Eckpunkte des Albums, das auf dem Weltkrieg-Thema basiert.


Was erwarten ihr von "Frontschwein"?


Ich weiß nicht! Ich habe mich nie mit Erwartungen auseinandergesetzt. Ich weiß, was wir tun und wir geben unsere Energie in die Musik, und wir sind keine Straßenhändler. Es ist vielleicht wichtig für die Medien, aber es spielt keine wirklich wichtige Rolle. Ich bin wirklich stolz auf das Album und das ist es was zählt. Und bei diesem Album bin ich sehr gespannt darauf, damit wieder on the road zu sein. Die Unterstützung von vielen Jahren ist das, was zählt.


Wenn ich auf ein Konzert oder ein Festival bin und Fans mit MARDUK-Shirts sehe, haben die meistens den Aufdruck "Panzer Division Marduk“! War dieses Album sehr wichtig für euch?


Für mich sind alle 13 Alben gleich wichtig, weil sie alle Pfeiler dessen sind, wofür wir stehen. Einige Alben sind Favoriten für die einen Leute und einige für anderen, aber einige sind etwas ganz Besonderes. Dieses Album ist die beliebteste Album, das wir gemacht haben und wir spielen noch immer gerne etwas aus diesem Album.


Ihr kommt aus Schweden - dem Land des Death Metal! Warum habt ihr euch für Black Metal entschieden?


Weil es auch das Land des Black Metal ist! Eine Menge von Death und Black Metal Bands kommt aus Schweden und später dann die Viking Metal-Bands. Wir haben einen Schatz von Black und Death Metal Bands, weißt du?


Sind alle Bandmitglieder Black Metal-Fans?


Wir leben Black und Death Metal. Ich glaube es ist nicht wichtig, ob etwas „real“ Death Metal oder Black Metal ist. Es ist der echte Metal überhaupt. Ich mache mir keine Gedanken über das Genre der Musik. Ich höre mir alles an, was für mich außergewöhnlich ist.


Wie viel Einfluss eure Musik deine Stimmung im täglichen Leben? Bist du ein ernsthafter Mensch oder ein fröhlicher?


Alles, was meine Arbeit betrifft ist ernst. Ich nehme mein ganzes Leben ernst, aber ich bin kein depressiver Kerl. Ich lebe und nehme das Leben, wie es ist und ich versuche, das Beste daraus zu machen. Ich bin ein Mensch, und ich kann beides sein. Und ich kann eine großartige Zeit genießen.


Du spielst auch noch in zwei anderen Bands (DEATH WOLF und ABRUPTUM)! Wie findest du Zeit für diese Bands und wie wichtig sind diese Bands für dich?


Alles, was ich in der Musik mache hat große Bedeutung für mich und für alles habe ich Zeit. Jetzt liegt mein Fokus auf MARDUK und auch das Album von DEATH WOLF kommt heraus. Für mich ist es in Ordnung verschiedene Dinge zu tun und die Arbeit an einer Sache ist vielleicht Inspiration für die anderen, und gibt mir Energie in alle Richtungen. DEATH WOLF ist ganz anders als MARDUK aber Ich mag es verschiedene Dinge zu tun und das macht es wertvoll!


Was sind eure Pläne für die Zukunft?


Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem neuen Album und den Touren. Im Sommer gibt es die Festival-Saison und nach dem Sommer möchten wir in die USA reisen. Wir konzentrieren uns darauf, wieder on the road zu sein, und wenn wir von den Tour in der ganzen Welt zurückkommen werden wir die Arbeit an einem neuen Album beginnen.

In mid-January, the Swedish black metal band MARDUK will publish their 13 th studio album entitled "Frontschwein". We had the opportunity with the head of the band and guitarist Morgan Håkansson (Evil) to conduct a conversation in which he told about different kinds of things and also the great pleasure that they will play at Kaltenbach Open Air 2015.

My name is Elisabeth and I work for the Austrian online-magazine earshot.
Thank you very much that you will ask you some questions!

Where are you at the moment?


I´m sitting at home and prepare the coming album and the coming tours.


2015 you will celebrate 25th anniversary of MARDUK and there are big tours planned through Australia, Japan and Europe. In Australia you will play with INQUISITION – is there friendship between MARDUK and INQUISITION or was this decided from a booking-agency?


I will say there is a friendship, we not really stay in contact but we toured together in the USA and we know each other, and it´s great to tour with them again. We are touring in Australia with them and we will play in New Zealand and Japan, and after then we will go out in Europe to a thirty days headline-tour, some days as part of a festival-package and then we are aiming to play in South Amerika.


I was watching your list of tour dates and it is so long!


Not everything is announced and more dates will come soon!


In Japan you will tour with more bands. Do you have lots of fans there and is there any difference between European and Japanese fans?


I think there is no big difference. There in Japan are not so many Extreme Metal Shows like in Europe. Otherwise I don´t think there is such a big difference. I think it is more or less like all across the world. People enjoy the music and lyrics and become a unity. In Japan we have been twice. First time in 1999 and we were back in 2013. So now it takes not so long time until we come back.


And then in April will start the Hatefest-Tour through Europe – with SIX FEET UNDER, VADER, DEBACHERY, EISREGEN and HATE. Are some of the bands special friends with you?


We toured many years with VADER, we understand very well and share a lot of interests, so it is always a pleasure to be on the road with VADER.


You will also come to Vienna with this tour – do you know Austria a little bit or only from touring?


I know Austria only from touring, but we have been in Austria round 16 times, so we have seen quite a lot. It is a fantastic country I really like and it is always great to be in Austria!


You will also come to Kaltenbach Open Air – this festival is very important for the Austrian Metal Scene. I live very close to this festival. Have you been there before?


It´s located in such a beautiful area. We played at this festival once before, we had a great time there, and we are very looking forward to play there again.


What do you like more – playing on a tour or on a festival?


At a festival you can always have problems with the equipment and you have fast change. In that respect I prefer to play at clubs. It´s great to play at festivals, when they are well organized, but it´s hard to say before we play. But when we do what we do it´s great.


In January you will release your 13th album “Frontschwein”. Why did you decide to give the album this German name and what is the idea behind the album?


It´s not a concept album but it´s all scened round World War Two from different angles, so everybody knows the meaning of “Frontschwein” – they were at the front did a dirty job and take the shit . In every country they have their own words, but “Frontschwein” sounds great and it really reflects the spirit of the album, and the theme of the album which reflects the spirit, when we come and play Extreme Metal. We are always on the front and always on the road. We are the “Frontschweins” of what we do!


Do you like the German language or is it only useful to your songs?


I like the German language! It is a base for Swedish language.


Are you the songwriter?


I´m one of the songwriters, it´s on me to write the vocals. We work on music ourselves and then we come back to our rehearsal-bunker and see what we have. It´s a band-effort – we always work together.


Where do you find the ideas for your songs?


It´s different from song to song and from album to album. Sometimes you have visions from a theme. I read lots of history and that helps to create. I created the soundtrack of lots of historic happenings because for me it´s natural to create soundtracks. I´m spying about that you hate in live. And that are the angles of the album that is based on the World War Two-Theme.


What are your expectations to “Frontschwein”?


I don´t know! I never sit down with expectations. I know what we do and give our energy to the music and we are not marching across the roads. And it´s media-like but it doesn´t really matter, but I´m really proud at the album and that is what matters. And with this album I´m really looking forward to be back on the road. The support from many years is that what matters.


When I am on a concert or a festival and I see fans with MARDUK-Shirts, at most of them I can read “Panzer Division Marduk”! Was this album the most important for you?


For me all the 13 albums are equal important, because they all considers the pillars of what we are standing for. Some album is favourite for some people and some for another, but some are very special. This album is the most popular album we have done and we still like to play something of this album live.


You come from Sweden – the land of Death Metal! Why did you decide to make Black Metal?


Because it is the land of Black Metal as well! A lot of Death and Black Metal Bands are from Sweden, and later on Viking Metal Bands. We have a treasure of Black and Death Metal Bands, you know!


Are all bandmembers Black Metal Fans?


We live and breathe Black and Death Metal. I don´t really care if something is real Death Metal or Black Metal. It´s real Metal at all. I don´t care about the label of music. I listen to everything what is for me extraordinary.


How much influences your music your mind in daily live? Are you a serious person or a merry one?


Everything in my work is serious. I take my whole live serious but I am not a depressed guy. I live and take life what it is and I try to do the best. I´m a human being and I can be both. And I can enjoy having a great time.


You are engaged in two other bands (DEATH WOLF and ABRUPTUM)! How do you find time for these bands and how important are these bands for you?


Everything I do in music has great importance and everything have it´s time. Now my focus is on MARDUK and also the album from DEATH WOLF is coming out. For me is it fine doing different things and working on one thing is maybe inspiration for the others, and giving energy for me in all directions. DEATH WOLF is very different to MARDUK but I like to do different things and that makes it precious!


What are your plans for the future?


The main focus is on the new album and touring. In summer there is the festival season and after the summer we may go to the USA. We are focussing on being back on the road, and when we are back from touring all around the world we will start working on a new album.


Some last words to your fans?


I send a big regard to all our loyal supporters and we will see you when we are marching accross your territories!
