Anlässlich ihres Konzertes in der Szene in Wien hatte ich die Gelegenheit, mit Ville Friman von der Finnischen Melodic Death Metal Band INSOMNIUM über die Band, ihren Erfolg und allerlei andere Dinge zu sprechen.

Hallo! Schön, dich hier zu treffen!
Wie geht es dir?


Mir geht es gut. Ich hatte eine Grippe in den letzten zwei Wochen, aber jetzt bin ich bin ich wieder gesund und ich bin fühle mich großartig!




Es gibt INSOMNIUM seit 17 Jahren. Was hat sich für euch verändert diesen Jahren?


Wir waren wirklich Kinder, als wir die Band gründeten, wirklich sehr jung und wir hatten nicht ein sehr große Ziel vor Augen, und wir wussten nicht wie lange es mit dieser ersten Band gehen würde. Wir gingen ins Studio, hatten ein Demo, hatten ein Album und tourten ein wenig, und dann wurde es mit der Zeit ernster. Jetzt sind wir auf einer Headliner-Tour. Wir haben einen langen Weg und sechs Alben hinter uns und wir genießen es immer noch spielen Musik zu spielen und Musik zu komponieren.


Wie schwierig ist es, eine professionelle Metal Band zu sein?


Es ist schwer, weil wir alle arbeiten und unsere tägliche Arbeit haben, so dass Musik ein Hobby, eine Nebenjob ist. Natürlich gibt es viel Konkurrenz, viele Bands da draußen, und es ist nicht so einfach, vom Geld zu leben, das man mit der Musik verdient. So ist es besser für uns, dass wir immer unsere tägliche Arbeit haben, denn Leben ist teuer und die Band bringt etwas Geld und ein zusätzliches Einkommen, aber unser Leben ist nicht abhängig von der Band und wir haben die Freiheit zu entscheiden, wenn wir ein neues Album machen usw. Wir müssen nicht alle zwei Jahre ein neues Album herausbringen und auf Tour gehen und dauernd unterwegs sein. So haben wir mehr Freiheit, das ist eine gute Sache, dadurch sind wir noch nicht ausgebrannt.


Wie anstrengend ist es, 18 Shows an 18 aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen zu spielen?


Ich glaube, mein letzter Rekord ist 15 Shows in 15 Tagen, aber wir waren EPICA-Supportband in den USA, und da haben wir keine langen Sets gespielt, wir hatten nur 40 Minuten zu spielen. Nun machen wir 18 Shows in Europa, und wir spielen 1,5 Stunden jede Nacht, so dass wir am Anfang Muskelkater im Nacken und oberen Rücken bekamen, aber ansonsten ist es in Ordnung. Es ist ein bisschen eine Qual für den Körper, aber es ist immer noch machbar.


Wusstest du jederzeit wo du gerade warst?


Ja, wir haben diese kleinen Pässe mit denen wir jederzeit prüfen können, wo wir sind. Dies ist eine nicht zu lange Tour. Wir hatten eine Menge Termine in Deutschland und der Schweiz und jetzt Österreich, und dann geht´s noch nach Polen und zum Abschluss nach Tschechien. Es ist nett verschiedenen Länder zu sehen.


Habt ihr auch etwas von den Ländern gesehen?


Es hängt von Aktivitäten ab. Zwei Jungs von uns sind gerade noch in der Innenstadt in Wien um die Einkaufszentren und Musik-Shops zu erkunden und einfach nur Sightseeing machen. Ich bin dieses Jahr für eine Woche in Wien gewesen, und ich habe eine Menge gesehen, also ich bin heute hier geblieben für Interviews und viele andere Sachen die es zu tun gibt. Wenn man aktiv ist und irgendwo hingehen möchte, kann man immer mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln in die Innenstadt fahren. Es ist genug Zeit. Wir sind die erste Band, wir machen den Soundcheck am Nachmittag und das müssen wir erst wieder vor der Show zurückkommen. In Berlin traf ich ein paar Freunde in einer Bar, und wir gingen in ein Restaurant zum Abendessen, und wir werden ein paar Freunde in Krakau treffen. Es ist genug Zeit, um normale Dinge zu tun. Wir schlafen in einem Nightliner. Es ist nicht sehr bequem, aber sehr nützlich.


Wie zufrieden seid ihr mit dieser Tour?


Alles ist besser gelaufen als wir erwartet hatten, denn ich hatte mir am Anfang Sorgen gemacht, ob wir genug Karten zu verkaufen würden und genug Leute zu unseren Shows kommen würden, denn es gibt so viele Bands und Touren. Es gibt viel Konkurrenz, aber gestern in München waren wir ausverkauft und die London-Show war ausverkauft und Paris auch, und für diesen Abend ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit sehr hoch, dass es ausverkauft sein wird. Das ist ein gutes Zeichen für Promotoren und Festival-Organisatoren. Man kann nie wissen, wie es laufen wird, wenn Sie eine Tour planen, aber diese funktioniert gut. Und es ist auch gut für die anderen Bands bei uns - STAM1NA und FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE - und wir haben eine sehr gute Stimmung auf der Tour.


Wer hat über eure Support-Bands entschieden?


Zuerst entschieden wir uns, eine Headliner-Tour zu machen, und dann fragten wir verschiedene Bands, ob sie verfügbar wären, und einige Booking-Agenturen wurden darauf angesetzt, uns Bands vorzuschlagen. FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE sind viel unterwegs, und sie sind ein bisschen bekannter. Es ist nicht so schwer, eine gute Band-Kombination haben. STAM1NA ist ein wirklich eine große Band in Finnland - viel größer als INSOMNIUM, aber sie waren kaum im Ausland auf Tour, sie wollten lieber etwas anderes zu tun, und jetzt supporten sie uns. Ich denke, dass das Paket gut ist und alle Bands gute Shows abliefern. Die Menschen freuen sich, wenn sie kommen, um das gesamte Package zu sehen.




Kanntet ihr die Bands vorher?


Wir trafen die STAM1NA-Jungs bei einigen Sommerfestivals, aber ich kannte niemanden von FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE. Aber wir schließen sehr leicht Freundschaften und alle Bands hatten ziemlich viel getourt, und alle wollen erstaunliche Shows abliefern und Spaß haben. Wir sind jetzt wirklich gute Freunde.


Euer letztes Album "Shadows Of The Dying Sun" war sehr erfolgreich. Habt ihr bemerkt, dass ihr auf dieser Tour hatte ein größeres Publikum hattet als bei der letzten?


Ich denke schon! Vor allem in Deutschland war es wirklich gut und einige Shows waren im Vorfeld ausverkauft. In der Regel haben wir wirklich überall gute Zuschauerzahlen gehabt, und es scheint, dass es so weiter geht. Wir freuen uns sehr und es ist besser als wir erwartet hatten. Und es ist wirklich toll, dass der Erfolg des Albums auch Einfluss auf die Zahl der Menschen hat, die kommen um uns zu sehen.


Wie lange habt ihr an diesem Album gearbeitet?


Ich fing an, die neuen Songs zu Beginn des Jahres 2013 zu schreiben, dann haben wir beschlossen, vorab einen Song aufzunehmen, dann hatten wir eine Tour im Spätherbst des Jahres 2013, und dann gingen wir ins Studio. Es dauerte etwa ein Jahr um die Lieder zu komponieren und im Studio aufzunehmen.


Wie beeinflusst euer Heimatland Finnland eure Musik?


Es ist schwer zu sagen, was unsere Musik beeinflusst. Ich denke, die Natur und Wechsel der Jahreszeiten hat Auswirkungen, aber ich denke, am meisten werde ich von anderen Bands und ihrer Musik beeinflusst. Songtexte kommen oft aus Büchern, und wenn ich einen Satz entdecke, spreche ich es in meine I-Phone und wenn es Zeit ist um Texte zu schreiben, dann überprüfe ich zuerst meine Notizen und so muss ich nie mit Nichts zu schreiben beginnen.


Bist du der einzige Songwriter in der Band?


Ich schreibe die meisten Sachen, die meisten Songs heutzutage, aber auch Niilo macht Songs und Markus komponiert auch Musik. Er hat tatsächlich zwei Songs vom neuen Album geschrieben. Jeder hat große Auswirkungen auf unsere Songs und jeder hat die Freiheit mitzumachen, und auch unser Schlagzeuger beteiligt sich. Ich denke, es ist eine gewisse Gruppendynamik und viel davon wird erst im Studio entschieden. Wir haben nicht viel Vorproduktion gemacht, das meiste haben wir im Studio entschieden.




Das letzte Mal sah ich euch am Tuska Open Air 2014 und es war sehr kalt und regnerisch an diesem Tag. Was magst du mehr - eine Headliner-Show oder auf einem Festival zu spielen?


Beides ist gut - gut in ihrem eigenen Zusammenhang, aber bei der letzten Tuska-Show war das Wetter wirklich schlecht, und es regnete und es war auch windig. Die ganze Bühne war sehr rutschig und ich fiel viele Male fast hin, das war sehr ärgerlich. Ich denke, wenn auf großen Festivals wir untertags spielen, kann man das Licht nicht richtig einsetzen und es fehlt ein Aspekt der Show. Aber wenn man auf Festivals wie Summer Breeze in diesem Jahr spielt, wo alles dunkel war, war es sehr gut, wir konnten alle Lichter für Effekte einsetzen. Das war großartig und ein wirklich riesiges Publikum. Aber ich mag Club-Shows auch. Sie sind intimer und es ist einfacher, mit Menschen in Verbindung zu treten, da man beinahe alle in der Halle sehen kann. Bei Festivals kann man viele Leute erreichen und das ist gut.


Was ist deine Meinung - warum es so viele großartige Metal-Bands in Finnland?


Wir werden das sehr viel gefragt. Es ist schwer zu erklären. Wir haben viele gute Möglichkeiten. Wir können versuchen mit einer Band zu starten, wenn wir jung sind. Wir haben Räume für Proben in der Schule. Vielleicht es ist wegen unserer langen Winter. Viele Male sind wir nicht in der Lage, nach draußen zu gehen, und wir müssen etwas finden was man drinnen machen kann, so ist das Musikmachen mit einer Band durchaus üblich. Es ist auch üblich, Sport in Finnland zu betreiben. Aber wir haben eine gute Musik-Bildung in den Schulen, und ich denke, das ist einer der Hauptgründe.




Gibt es einen großen Wettbewerb zwischen den finnischen Metal Bands oder mehr Freundschaft?


Es ist mehr Freundschaft und das ist wichtig. Die Szene ist sehr klein, sodass jeder jeden kennt. Es ist eine sehr förderliche Umwelt und jede Band will Shows spielen, und es herrscht eine sehr gute Atmosphäre zwischen den Bands.


Was werdet ihr nach dieser Tour machen?


Wir fliegen zurück nach Hause, da werde ich etwas entspannen und dann muss ich wieder meiner täglichen Arbeit nachgehen. Aber dann werden wir zu einer USA-Tournee mit DARK TRANQUILITY aufbrechen und im ganzen Januar werden wir mit ihnen auf Tournee sein, und es werden weitere Touren kommen und hoffentlich werden wir bei vielen Sommer-Festivals spielen. Das nächste Jahr wird sehr beschäftigt sein.

Und was sind eure weiteren Pläne für die Zukunft?


Vielleicht werden wir eine Pause machen und ich werde anfangen neue Songs zu schreiben. Ich freue mich, denn ich schreibe sehr gerne Musik. Musizieren ist eine Leidenschaft, und Ich mache es sehr gerne, und es ist faszinierend und interessant!

On the occasion of their concert in the Szene in Vienna, I had the opportunity to speak with Ville Friman from the Finnish Melodic Death Metal band INSOMNIUM about the band, their success and different other things.

Hello! Nice to meet you here!
How are you?


I´m well. I had a flu the last two weeks, but now I´m going be healthy and i´m feeling great!


INSOMNIUM exists since 17 years. What changed for you in these years?


We were really kids when we started the band, really young and we didn´t have any big aim how long to go with this first one. We went to studio, had a demo, had an album and toured a bit, and then has come more serious time. Now we are on a headliner-tour. We come a long way, six albums behind us, and still we are enjoying playing music and composing music.


How difficult is it to be a professional Metal Band?


It is hard, because we all work and have our daily jobs, so making music is a hobby, is a side-thing. Of course, there is lot of competition, lots of bands are out there and so it´s not easy to make money to life from the music, so it´s better for us that we always had our daily jobs, because living is expensive and the band brings some money and some income, but our life is not depending on the band and we have the freedom to decide, when we make a new album and such things. We don´t have to put out a new album every second year and to be on tour and to be a lot on road. So we have more freedom, that is a good thing, we haven´t burned ourselves up yet.


How exhausting is it to play 18 shows on 18 successive days?


I think, my last record is 15 shows in 15 days, but we were supporting EPICA in the USA, but we were not playing long sets, we were playing 40 minutes. No we are doing 18 shows in Europe, and we´re playing 1,5 hour every night, so in the beginning we got sour muscles in the neck and upper back, but otherwise it is okay. It´s a torture for the body but it is still doable.


Did you know every time where you was?


Yes, we have this nice passes and every time we can check were we are. This is not a too long tour. We had a lot of German dates, and Switzerland and now Austria, and then we go to Poland and then to Czech. So it´s nice to see different countries.


Did you see anything from the countries?


It depends on activities. Two guys are still in the city centre in Vienna to explore shopping centres and music-stores and just do sightseeing. I have been in Vienna before for one week, and I´ve seen a lot here, so today I´m staying here for doing interviews and lots of stuff here. If you are active and you want to go somewhere you can always go to the city centre with public transport. It´s enough time. We are the first band we do the soundcheck in the afternoon and the we have to come back before the show. In Berlin I met a couple of friends in a bar and we went to a restaurant for a dinner, and we will meet some friends in Krakow. It´s enough time, to do normal things. And we sleep in a nightliner. It is not the most comfortable but it is very useful.


How satisfied are you with this tour?


Everything has worked better than we had expected, because I had been worried at the beginning if we would sell enough tickets, we would get enough people attending the shows, because there are so many bands and tours going on. There is lot of competition, but yesterday in Munich it was sold out and London-show was sold out and Paris also, and for this evening the chance is very high to be sold out. That is a good sign for promoters and festival-organizers. You never know how it goes when you plan a tour, but this one works good. And it is also good for the other bands with us STAM1NA and FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE and we have a very good atmosphere at the tour.


Who decided about your support-bands?


We decided first to do a headliner-tour and then we asked around different bands if they are available, and some booking agencies were suggesting us bands. FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE are touring a lot and they are a little bit more recogniced. It is not so heavy to have a good band-combination. STAM1NA is a really a big band in Finland – much bigger than INSOMNIUM, but they haven´t been touring abroad, they wanted to do something else, and now they are supporting us. I think the package is good and all the bands are having good shows. People are happy when they come to see the whole package.


Did you know the bands before?


We met STAM1NA-guys at some summer-festivals, but I didn´t know anyone from FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE . But we get to know people very easily and all the bands had toured quite a lot, and all want to have amazing shows and have fun. We are now really good friends.


Your last album "Shadows Of The Dying Sun" was very successful. Have you noticed that you had on this tour a bigger audience than at the last ones?


I think so! Especially in Germany it was really good and some shows were sold out in advance. In general we had had really good attendances everywhere, and it seems to be that it is continuing. We are really happy and it´s going better than we expected. And it´s really great, that the success of the album also reflex of the number of people, that are coming to see us.


How long had you worked on this album?


I started to write the new songs at the beginning of 2013, then we decided to record one song beforehand, then we had a tour in the late fall of 2013 and then we went to studio. It took around one year composing the songs and the time in studio.


How influences your home country Finland your music?


It is hard to say, what is influencing our music. I guess like nature and change of seasons may having effects but I think, most I am influenced by other bands and their music. Lyrics wise there are books, and when I have a line I speak it in my I-Phone and when it is time to write lyrics I´m first checking my notes and so I´m never starting from nowhere.

Are you the only songwriter in the band?


I´m writing most of the stuff, most of the songs nowadays, but also Niilo is doing songs and Markus also composes music. He did actually two songs from the new album. Everybody is making big effects to our songs and everybody have the freedom, and also our drummer is involved. I think it´s group-effort and lots of it is decided in the studio. We haven´t done much pre-production, we decided most things there.


Last time I saw you was on Tuska Open Air 2014 and it was very cold and rainy this day. What do you like more – play a headliner-show or on a festival?


Both are good – good in their own respect, but the last Tuska-show the weather was really bad, and it was raining and it was also windy. The whole stage was really slippery and I almost fell many times, so that was very annoying. I think when we are playing big festivals in daytime, you cannot use the lights properly and so you can miss one aspect of the show. But if you are playing festivals like on Summer Breeze this year, it was all dark and it was very good to use all the lights for effects. That was very good and a really good crowd. But I do like club-shows as well. They are intimate and it´s easier to connect with people, because you almost see everybody in the hall. With festivals you can reach lots of people and that is good.


What is your opinion – why are so many great metal-bands in Finland?


We get asked this a lot. It´s hard to explain. We have properly good opportunity. We can try out and start with a band when we are young. We have rooms for rehearsals at school. Maybe it´s because of our long wintertime. Many times we are not be able to go outside and we need to find something to do inside, so playing music with a band is public quite common. It´s also common to do sports in Finland. But we have good music-education in schools, and I think this is one of the main-reasons.


Is there a big competition between the Finnish Metalbands or more friendship?


it´s more friendship and that is important. The scene is quite small, so everybody knows everybody. It´s a very supporty environment and every band wants to play shows and it is a very good atmosphere between the bands.


What will you do after this tour?


We will fly back home, little bit relax and then I have to go to work in my daily job. But then we will go to a USA-Tour with DARK TRANQUILITY in January and whole January we will be touring there, and the properly more tours are coming and hopefully lots of summer-festivals. Next year will be quite busy.

And what are your further plans for the future?


Maybe we will have a break and I will start writing new songs. I´m looking forward, because I like writing music. Making music is a passion and I like to do it and it is fascinating and interesting!
