Lange hat es gedauert, doch jetzt bringen die Briten NEONFLY endlich ihr zweites Werk "Strangers In Paradise" heraus. Die Power Metaller überzeugen einmal mehr mit unzähligen Hooks, eingängigen Songs und einer dicken Portion Power. Gitarrist Frederick Thunder stand uns erneut Rede und Antwort:

Hey Frederick, schön wieder mit dir sprechen zu können. Was hat sich seit unserem letzten Interview im Sommer 2013 so getan?

Allerdings ist es schön mit dir wieder zu reden! Eigentlich ist so einiges passiert, nämlich wirklich cooles Zeug aber auch Schlechtes, aber wir sind noch am Leben und sind dabei unser zweites Album zu veröffentlichen. Wir waren auch viel auf Tour!

In Kürze erscheint „Strangers In Paradise“. Wie fühlst du dich nun mit dem Material?

Wir fühlen uns großartig! Es ist ein sehr starkes Album in das wir wirklich glauben. Wir glauben auch, dass es unsere beste Veröffentlichung bisher ist. Da wir bisher nur zwei Alben haben, besteht eine 50%ige Chance, dass ich Recht habe! Ich kann den Release gar nicht mehr erwarten, denn ich habe große Hoffnungen in das Album und denke, dass es NEONFLY einige Türen öffnen könnte, was der Qualität zu verdanken ist.

Wieso hat es so lange gedauert das Album endlich raus zu bringen. Ihr habt ja bereits letztes Jahr im Sommer einige der Songs live präsentiert!

Das stimmt, faktisch war das Album damals bereits zu 100% fertig. Das Problem war, dass wir kein Label mehr hatten, denn unser vorheriges hat die Pforten 2012 geschlossen. Wir wollten sicherstellen, dass wir nicht alte Fehler nochmal begehen, also brauchten wir einen guten Deal für das Album, denn wir haben da so viel Mühe reingesteckt. Nicht zu vergessen, dass uns die Aufnahmen einen Haufen Geld gekostet haben. Das wollten wir nicht einfach rauswerfen. Es war uns sehr wichtig, dass das Album ordentlich veröffentlicht und promotet wird. Wir meinten, dass wir das verdient haben, ebenso wie die Fans es verdienen. Wir haben das was wir gesucht haben mit Inner Wounds gefunden und die leisten großartige Arbeit. Emil, der Chef des Labels, ist ein wirklich ehrlicher und hart arbeitender Kerl und es ist eine Ehre mit so jemandem zu arbeiten. Somit wird das Album endlich veröffentlicht. Ich hoffe dass es bis zum nächsten nicht wieder so eine lange Wartezeit gibt.

Wie sind denn die Reaktionen bisher?

Bisher großartig! Die meisten Reviews sind fantastisch, und wir sind sehr froh darüber. Die Fans hatten bisher die Chance einige Songs live zu erleben, wie du bereits erwähntest und es ist ziemlich offensichtlich, dass die Leute diese Songs lieben, auch wenn sie diese zum ersten Mal zu Gehör bekommen. Ich freue mich schon wirklich darauf wenn das Album draußen ist, damit wir mehr neues Zeug spielen können.

Was bedeutet der Titel „Strangers In Paradise“?

Der Titel hat Verbindungen zu vielen verschiedenen Dingen. „Strangers In Paradise“ geht mit der Idee von Konflikt und Kampf einher, ein Fremder im Paradise zu sein, also wo zu sein wo es scheint, als gehöre man dort nicht hin. Ich persönlich denke als Songwriter, dass viel große Kunst aus Konflikten hervorging, sei es interner oder externer. Und viele Texte haben ein Thema, das sich mit verschiedenen Arten des Kampfes befassen.

Als Band, denke ich, dass NEONFLY immer schon etwas als Fremde in der Metalszene gehandelt wurden. Somit passt der Titel auch auf uns. Es gibt da die Idee des Non-Konformismus. Wo auch immer du hingehst, wenn du versucht deinen Weg irgendwo hinein zu machen, in irgendeine vorfestgelegte Ordnung, wird es immer Leute geben, die gegen eine Veränderung ankämpfen und Neulingen Steine in den Weg zu legen versuchen. Aber wir sind hier um solchen Leute zu beweisen, dass wir nicht gehen und sowieso reinkommen werden.

Der Titel hat auch eine Verbindung zu dem Song „Heart Of The Sun“, in dem es um Imperialismus, den Conquistatores und Lope De Aguirre geht. Es gibt ein Bild der Conquistatores wie sie auf dem jungfräulichen Sand am Strand der neuen Welt ankommen und dieses entdecken wir „Strangers In Paradise“.

Wo siehst du denn die Unterschiede zu „Outshine The Sun“? Für mich ist es komplexer und es hat auch länger gedauert um in die Songs reinzukommen...

Ich finde auch dass es komplexer ist, aber die Melodielinien sind ziemlich stark, weshalb es besser zugänglich ist für ein breiteres Publikum. Ich denke auch, dass die Produktion weit stärker ist, so auch das Songwriting. Gesamt gesehen ist es besser als „Outshine The Sun“ und das obwohl man absolut nicht sagen kann, dass es schlecht ist, ich denke einfach, dass es besser und erwachsener geworden ist. Es gibt einige heftigere und schnellere Songs, aber auch einige Balladen, also sehr viel Abwechslung.

Wie liefen das Songwriting und die Aufnahmen dazu ab?

Ich schreibe immer alleine und präsentiere die Songs dann der Band, damit wir sie gemeinsam proben. Sie bringen dann Ideen ein und wir ändern die Songs bis sie perfekt sind. Sie geben mir Feedback und ich arbeite dann zu Hause weiter daran... sofern ich denke sie haben Recht! Haha!

Was die Aufnahmen betrifft, haben wir die Arbeit Dennis Ward überlassen. Wir sagten: „Hey, wie klingt eine Dreifach-Platin Platte? Kannst du die genau so klingen lassen wir eine Dreifach-Platin?“ Ich vertraue Dennis sehr, weil er ein sehr erfahrener Musiker und Produzent ist, also erwarte ich natürlich auch Dreifach-Platin in der ersten Verkaufswoche!

Was kannst du mir denn zum Artwork erzählen?

Das Albumcover ist ein Bild des Azteken-Gott Quetzacoatl, der auch eine Verbindung zum Titel darstellt und natürlich auch zu den Konquistadoren und der Neuen Welt. Wir dachten das Bild von Quetzacoatl als gefiederter Drache, der trotzig dasteht wäre ein tolles Image für NEONFLY. Jorge Garza, ein amerikanischer Künstler, der ziemlich von der Pre-Hispanischen Kultur beeinflusst ist, hat das Artwork gemacht. Ich fand seine Arbeiten online und dachte, der würde meine Idee perfekt zum Leben erwecken. Er hat großartige Arbeit geleistet!

Habt ihr schon Pläne für ein Video?

Eigentlich haben wir das bereits dieses Wochenende gemacht! Wir sind nach Zypern geflogen um ein Video für „Better Angels“ in einer großartigen Umgebung zu drehen. Es wird einige Überraschungen, die ich noch nicht bekannt geben kann, geben. Aber ihr werdet es im Jänner herausfinden, wenn es veröffentlicht wird.

Ihr wart mit DRAGONFORCE auf UK-Tour. Wie habt ihr die Möglichkeit dazu bekommen und wie ist es mit den Jungs die Bühne zu teilen?

Wir kennen die DRAGONFORCE-Leute schon lange und sie kamen früher öfter, um NEONFLY live zu sehen. Herman Li hat unser Management kontaktiert und uns diese Chance angeboten, welche wir freudig annahmen. Es war alles sehr simpel. Mit ihnen zu touren war wirklich lustig, sie sind großartige Leute und immer für eine Party zu haben, so wie wir. So kann ich mit Sicherheit sagen, dass wir sehr sehr sehr schnell den Überblick verloren haben wie viele Biere wir auf der Tour getrunken haben...
Die Fans waren aber auch toll! Sehr junge und enthusiastische Crowds!

Also denkst du, ihr habt neue Fans erreicht?

Auf jeden Fall! Viele auf der Tour haben vorher noch nie etwas von uns gehört, also haben wir schnell neue Fans und Freunde gefunden. Die Reaktionen wenn wir raus zum Merch kamen um Sachen zu unterschreiben, waren überwältigend, ebenso wie die auf den sozialen Medien.

Auf eurer Masters Of Rock Show habt ihr ein paar Girls mit auf der Show gehabt. Wie seid ihr auf die Idee gekommen? Ist ja eher unüblich in eurem Genre, eher ein Glam-Rock Ding....

Wir wollten etwas Neues und Spezielles für die tschechischen Fans bieten, um zu feiern, dass wir auf der Main Stage so eines so coolen Festivals spielen können, was zudem unsere größte Show in Tschechien bisher war. Die Fans dort waren immer so unterstützend, dass wir ihnen etwas zurückgeben wollten. Anfangs wollten wir Pyros, was wir uns aber nicht wirklich leisten konnten, also haben wir Mädels mitgebracht die ein paar Feuer- und Pyrotricks machten. Wir dachten, das wäre eine coole optische Attraktion und ich denke es hat funktioniert, denn die Fans mochten es und wir waren auf der Hauptseite einer lokalen tschechischen Zeitung am nächsten Tag. Und sogar ATROCITY / LEAVE´S EYES fragten uns, ob sie die Mädels auch in ihrem Set auftreten lassen könnten.

Habt ihr denn schon Pläne für eine weiter Tour im nächsten Jahr?

Bisher ist nichts bestätigt, aber natürlich planen wir zu touren. Ich hoffe wir bekommen einen coolen Support-Slot für eine EU-Tour. Wir werden sehen, was wir bekommen könnnen.

Was würdest du denn euren größten Moment mit NEONFLY nennen?

Definitiv als wir für ALICE COOPER eröffnet haben. Alice ist so eine große Legende und für jemanden wie ihn eröffnen bzw. mit ihm touren zu können, ihn Backstage zu treffen, seinen Ratschlägen zuzuhören, ihn performen zu sehen... es war eine großartige Erfahrung. Und all die Rock´n´Roll Ausschweifungen im NEONFLY-Camp haben das ganze zudem noch zu einer speziellen Erfahrung gemacht. (lacht)

Hey Frederick, nice to talk to you again. What happened since our last interview in summer 2013?

Frederick Thunder: Nice to talk to you indeed! A lot has happened actually, some really good stuff, some really bad stuff, but we´re still alive and we´re about to release our second album. We´ve toured a lot actually!

In a few weeks you will release your second record. How do you feel now with the material?

We feel great! It´s a very strong album and we really believe in it. We also believe it´s our best release so far, and since we only have 2 albums, there´s a 50% chance that I am right! I cannot wait to release it, I really have high hopes for this album, I think it will open a lot of doors for Neonfly thanks to the quality of the material.

Why did it take so long to get the record ready? I mean you already played a bunch of new songs at the last year´s summer festivals.

That´s right, in fact the record was 100% finished at the time. The problem is that we didn´t have a label because our previous label closed its doors in 2012. We wanted to make sure that we didn´t repeat past mistakes so we wanted to be sure that we had a good deal for this album, because we put so much effort into it. Not to mention that it cost us a lot of money to record it. So we weren´t about to throw it away for anyone. It was really important for us that this album got a decent and well promoted release. We felt that we deserved it, and the fans deserved it too. We finally got what we were looking for with Inner Wound Recordings, which have been fantastic so far. Emil, the boss of the label is a really honest and hard working guy, and it´s a pleasure to work with someone like that. So finally the album is getting released! Hopefully it won´t be such a long wait for the next one!

How are the reactions so far?

So far the reactions have been great! Most reviews have been fantastic, and we´re really happy about that. The fans have had the chance to hear some of the new songs live as you mentioned, and it´s pretty clear when we play the new songs that people are loving them, even if it´s the first time they hear them. I´m really looking forward to the album being released so we can play more new stuff live.

What is the meaning of the title “Strangers In Paradise”?

That title is linked to a lot of different things. Strangers in Paradise has an idea of conflict and struggle, being a stranger in paradise is like being in a place where you don´t belong. I personally believe as a songwriter, that a lot of great art is born out of conflict, be it internal or external... and a lot of the songs in the album have a lyrical theme that connects to a certain idea of struggle.

As a band, I believe that NEONFLY have always been considered a bit as strangers within the metal scene. So it´s a title that also appeals to us. There is an idea of non-conformism. Wherever you go, when you try to make your way in, into a certain pre-established order, there are always going to be people that are going to be against any idea of change and will try to put obstacles for newcomers. But we are here to prove to those people that we are not going away and that we are going to come in anyway.

The title is also connected to a song on the album called "Heart Of The Sun", which talks about imperialism, the conquistadores and Lope De Aguirre. There is an image of the conquistadores approaching the virgin sands of the beach in the new world they were about to discover, like strangers in that paradise...

Where do you see the differences in comparison to “Outshine The Sun”? For me it´s more complex and it took more time to get into it….

I think it´s more complex as you say, but I think the melodic lines in it are quite strong, for it to be accessible to a wider public. I think the production is much better, and so is the songwriting. Overall I think it´s better than “Outshine The Sun” and that´s not to say that Outshine was a bad album, I just think this one is better and more mature. It features some heavier and faster songs, but also some ballads, it´s quite varied!

How was the procedure of writing and recording the songs?

I always write on my own, and then present the songs to the band, we rehearse them together, they bring in some ideas and we make some changes to the songs until they are just perfect. They give me some feedback on my songwriting, and then I go back home and keep working on them… if I think they are right! haha.

As for recording we just left all the work to Dennis. We said: “Hey Dennis, how does a triple platinum album sound like? Can you make it sound exactly like a triple platinum album?“ I really trust Dennis because he is a very experienced musician and producer, so I´m naturally expecting this album to go triple platinum on the first week of its release.

What can you tell me about the artwork?

The album cover is a picture of the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl that is also connected to the album title, and the theme of the conquistadores and the new world, etc. We thought the image of Quetzalcoatl standing defiant as a feathered dragon on our album cover was a great image for Neonfly. Jorge Garza, an American artist who is really influenced by pre-hispanic culture, made the artwork. I found his work online and I thought he would be perfect to bring my idea to life. He did a fantastic job!

Do you have plans to shoot a video for one of the songs?

We already did, this weekend in fact! We flew to Cyprus to shoot a video for “Better Angels” on an amazing location. There will be some surprises on that video as well in fact, which I cannot reveal for now… but you´ll find out all about it in January when the video will be released.

You were on UK-Tour with DRAGONFORCE – how did you get this opportunity and how was it to share the stage with the guys?

We´ve known the DRAGONFORCE guys for a while, and they´ve come to see NEONFLY live in the past… Herman got in touch with our management and offered us this opportunity, which we gladly accepted. It was all quite simple!
Touring with them was really fun, they are great guys, and always up for a party, as are we, so it´s safe to say that we very very quickly lost count of how many beers were drunk on that tour…
The fans were fantastic as well! Really young and enthusiastic crowds!

So you think you reached new fans?

Absolutely! A lot of people who saw us on that tour had never heard of us in fact, so we made a lot of new fans and friends. The response when we came out to the merch stand to sign stuff was overwhelming, and also the reaction on social media.

On your Masters Of Rock show you had two girls with you on stage – how came this idea? It´s not so a usual thing in your genre – more a Glam Rock thing…

Well, we wanted to bring something special and new for our Czech fans, to celebrate the fact that we were playing on the Main Stage at such a cool festival, and our biggest show to date in Czech Republic. Czech fans have always been very supportive, so we wanted to give something back to them. Originally we thought of having some pyro, but we could´t really afford that, so we thought we could bring in some girls that could do fire tricks and pyro. We thought it would be a cool visual attraction. I think all in all it worked out quite well, fans seemed to like it, we made it to the front page of a local Czech newspaper the next day, and even Atrocity/Leave´s Eyes asked if they could have them performing on their set as well!

Do you already have plans for another tour in the upcoming year?

Nothing is confirmed so far, but of course we plan to tour at some point. We´re hoping to get a good European tour supporting a cool band. We´ll see what we can get.

What would you call your biggest moment with NEONFLY?

Definitely opening for Alice Cooper. Alice is obviously such a legend and having the chance to tour and share the stage with someone like him, meeting him backstage, listening to his advice, watching him perform every night… it was an amazing experience. And all the rock and roll debauchery that ensued in the NEONFLY camp during that tour definitely made it quite an experience! Haha
