THE HOUSE OF CAPRICORN sind ein majestätisches sowie verdammt schwermütiges Sludge-Monster. Auch das Drittwerk "Morning Star Rise" zeigt die Neuseeländer auf höchstem Niveau. Wir sprachen mit der Band über ihre neue Veröffentlichung, den Metal in Neuseeland und den Teufel persönlich.


Hi Jungs, ich hoffe euch gehts gut! Ihr werdet in Kürze euer neues Album „Morning Star Rise“ veröffentlichen. Wie geht es euch jetzt mit dem Album?


Hi Max, uns geht es wirklich gut! Es ist Release-Tag während ich dies schreibe und ich persönlich fühle mich absolut zufrieden mit allem was das Album betrifft. Angefangen von den Songs, über die Produktion und das Artwork bis hin, dass Svart es veröffentlicht. Ich bin sicher es gibt Leute die es hassen werden, aber aus subjektiver Sicht gesehen und nachdem ich durch den ganzen Entstehungsprozess gegangen bin, ist es die lohnendste musikalische Unternehmung, von der ich jemals Teil war.




Kannst du zu Beginn gleich mal die Band kurz vorstellen für diejenigen die euch noch nicht kennen und etwas über die Anfänge von THE HOUSE OF CAPRICORN erzählen?


Natürlich. Ich habe angefangen Musik für HOC so um 2001 zu schreiben. 2005 habe ich Mike Rothwell genötigt, Drums für eine Demo, die ich gerade zusammenstellte, einzuspielen, die von meinem Freund VK (VASSAFOR) gemixt wurde. Nach dem Release bekundeten Mike, Scott und Ami Interesse eine Band zu formen. Wir kennen uns alle von Extreme Metal Bands aus Auckland. Von da an war es eine natürliche Entwicklung durch unsere Diskografie.


Was bedeutet der Titel „Morning Star Rise?


Ich spürte, dass er am besten passt, um die Themen der Songs auf dem Album zusammenzufassen: Ehrfurcht und Respekt dem Teufel gegenüber.


Und wie passt das recht simple Artwork dazu?


Diese Mal habe ich mit einem meiner besten Freunde L. Muir von DIOCLETIAN (der auch ein genialer Grafik-Designer ist) gearbeitet. Meine Fähigkeiten als Grafiker sind leider schmerzlich limitiert, so ist es toll Freunde wie Jamie (ULCERATE) zu haben – er hat all unsere vorherigen Artworks gemacht – und L.M., die mir helfen meine Ideen im richtigen Stil zu realisieren.
Ich hatte schon immer die Idee den Stern von Bethlehem auf ein Cover zu bringen und so haben wir Ideen ausgetauscht. Es hat perfekt funktioniert, wie ich finde.




Was bedeutet der Bandname THE HOUSE OF CAPRICORN, bzw. wie seit ihr auf den Namen gekommen?


Wir hatten noch THE DEVILS ZODIAC und THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL zur Auswahl, was aber zu plump klang, also denke ich, dass wir uns für die stilvollere Möglichkeit entschieden haben.


Ihr stammt ja aus Auckland, Neuseeland. In Europa sind nicht gerade viele Bands von dort bekannt. Wie steht´s um die Rock- und Metalszene bei euch drüben?


Was die „Szene“ betrifft, bin ich nicht mehr der Mann, den man da fragen sollte! Ich habe nicht mehr wirklich viel mit der aktiven Community zu schaffen dieser Tage, aber ich habe keine Zweifel daran, dass sich im Rock und Metal einiges tut, aber da bin ich nicht wirklich involviert. Aber natürlich gibt es eine große Zahl an Bands in Neuseeland die nicht mehr wirklich einer Szene angehören.


Kannst du davon ein paar Empfehlungen aussprechen?


Absolut.
Von allen NZ-Bands haben ULCERATE den größten Einfluss – und das mir Recht! Falls du die noch nicht gehört hast, sie spielen eine extrem beklemmende, verzerrte und ungewöhnliche Art des Extreme Metal – ähnlich IMMOLATION und DEATHSPELL OMEGA, aber mit ganz eigenem Sound. Wenn du sie anchecken willst, Relapse hat gerade ihr aktuelles Album „Vermis“ veröffentlicht, welches, wie ich finde, ihr bestes bisher ist. Sie sind auch sehr gut Freunde und Jamie (der Drummer) nimmt all das HOC Material auf.
STONE ANGELS und SINISTROUS DIABOLUS sind zwei drückende Doom-Bands aus dem Süden des Landes.
VASSAFOR ist eine brilliante „Swirly pitch black entity“. Technisch gesehen eine Band aus Neuseeland, auch wenn VK in Nord-Amerika zu Hause ist (er spielt auch Bass für BLASPHEMY). Ich glaube, dass sie mit VASSAFOR in Kürze eine Split veröffentlichen.
DIOCELTIAN spielt eine bösartige Art des Black/Death Metal und ist im Bereich des „War Metal“ seit Jahren involviert. Ihr letztes Album ist sehr stark und wurde, glaube ich, über Osmose veröffentlicht.
Und wenn es um Rock´n´Roll geht, SOULSELLER ist die Band die am Wichtigsten ist. Sie sind die größte Band des Genres in Neuseeland.


Ich habe den heavy und intensiven Sound von „Morning Star Rise“ sehr genossen. Was sind so eure Einflüsse und wie entstehen die Songs bei euch normalerweise?


Das freut mich zu hören Max! Was die Einflüsse betrifft, vieles kommt von BABYLON WHORES, TYPE O NEGATIVE, MORTUUS und THE SISTERS OF MERCY. Da sind natürlich andere Bands, Ideen und Elemente, die uns beeinflussen, aber diese sind die Schlüssel-Figuren.
Zum Songwriting: Meistens baue ich die Songs selbst bis zu 90% zusammen und präsentiere sie dann den anderen Jungs, damit sie ihren persönlichen Touch einbringen. Scott und Mike schreiben auch Songs für HOC, aber das Meiste mache ich. Die Songs klingen einigermaßen einheitlich, ich schreibe auch die Lyrics und teilweise die Vocal-Patterns.
Das heißt: Während ich der Hauptsongwriter für HOC bin, ist Scott Songwriter für CREEPING und Mike schreibt mit jemand anderem Songs für SHALLOW GRAVE, so haben wir alle unser eigenes kreatives Ventil.


Wie stehst du zu Vergleichen mit MASTODON?


Ich bin persönlich kein großer MASTODON Fan (auch wenn ich „Leviathan“ wirklich mochte, als es raus kam – ich habe mich aber seit Jahren nicht mehr damit beschäftigt) – also kann ich nicht wirklich sagen, ob einen großen Einfluss auf uns haben... aber hey, wenn du Ähnlichkeiten hörst, kein Problem!


Worum gehts in den Texten?


Dem Teufel und die Apokalypse.


Ihr habt „The Only Star In The Sky“ gewählt, um ein Video zu drehen. Was macht den Song speziell und worum geht es?


Es ist wahrscheinlich mein Lieblingssong auf dem Album. Ich denke, dass er sich beim Aufnehmen und Mixen sehr gut entwickelt hat und die Atmosphäre die wir einfangen wollten ist uns sehr gut geglückt. Die Idee zum Video schien perfekt auf den Song zu passen und Amber (die Dame, die Regie geführt hat) und Slick Black (der Mann, der die Bilder gezeichnet hat) haben großartige Arbeit geleistet. Der Song selbst handelt von Befreiung im Licht Luzifers und der Apokalypse. Eigentlich das wovon ich immer schreibe.




Und wo siehst du die größten Unterschiede zu den Vorgängern?


Wir haben dieses Mal mehr Zeit für die Produktion aufgewandt und es etwas anders gemixt/gemastert. Es war ein bisschen ein Glücksspiel, aber es hat super funktioniert, wie ich finde! Die Songs sind auch größtenteils kürzer ausgefallen. Das war eine bewusste Entscheidung, um die Dinge etwas prägnanter zu halten.


Ich hörte, ihr plant leider keine Live-Aktivitäten. Warum?


Leider sind wir zur Zeit nicht betriebsfähig als Live-Band.

Hey guys, hope you are doing well! You will release your new record “Morning Star Rise” in a few days. How do you feel now with the record?


Hi Max, doing well indeed! It is release-day as I am writing this, and I personally feel very satisfied with everything about the album. From the songs, to the production, to the artwork, to the fact that Svart are releasing it.
I’m sure there will be people who hate it, but from a subjective perspective, and after having gone through the process, it’s without a doubt the best and most rewarding musical endeavour I’ve been a part of.


At first, can you please introduce the band and tell us a little bit about the beginnings of THE HOUSE OF CAPRICORN for the people out there who not know you yet.


Certainly. I started writing music for the HOC around 2001. In 2005 I coerced Mike Rothwell into playing drums on a demo O was putting together, which my friend VK (Vassafor) mixed. After its release, Mike, Scott and Ami all expressed interest in joining up to form a proper band. We all knew each other from playing in extreme metal bands in Auckland. From there it was a natural progression through our discography.


What is the title “Morning Star Rise” about?


I felt it best summed up one of the core the themes of the record: reverence and respect for the Devil.


And what can you tell me about the simple artwork with the star?


This time around I got together with one of my best friends L. Muir from DIOCLETIAN (who is also a brilliant graphic designer). My applicable design skills are painfully limited, so its good to have friends like Jamie (ULCERATE - who did all of our previous art) and L.M. to help materialize the ideas in the right style!
I’d always had the idea of putting a star of Bethlehem on the cover (I´m delighted by cheeky subversion along those lines), and bounced some ideas back and forth.
Worked out perfectly, i think!


What is your band name actually about and how did you choose this name?


"The Devil’s Zodiac" and "The House of the Devil" both seemed a bit too bold at the time, so we went for what I think was the classier option.


You are from Auckland, New Zeeland. In Europe there are not really many well-known bands from there. How is the Metal- and Rock scene over there?


As far as a "scene" goes, I’m not really the man to ask anymore! I don´t have all that much to do with the active community these days, but I have no doubt there is still a lot going on in rock and metal styles that I’m not too involved with. There are of course a number of New Zealand bands that are doing a lot of great things that are not particularly related to any scene anymore, though.


Do you have bands from around your area you would suggest?


Absolutely!
Of any NZ band, ULCERATE have made the biggest impact - and rightfully so! If you haven’t heard them yet, they play an extremely oppressive, warped and unorthodox style of extreme metal… something along the lines of IMMOLATION and DEATHSPELL OMEGA, but very much its own sound. If you want to check them out, Relapse released their last album "Vermis", which I think is their best to date. They´re also some of our very good friends, and Jamie (the drummer) records all of the HOC material.
STONE ANGELS and SINISTROUS DIABOLUS are two crushing doom based bands from the bottom of the country. STONE ANGELS are more along vile sludge lines, where Sinistrous Diabolus more so in the funereal diSEMBOWELMENT/Thergothon realm.
VASSAFOR is a brilliant, swirling pitch black entity. Technically a New Zealand act, although VK is based over in North America at the moment (as he also plays bass for Blasphemy). I think there’s a new VASSAFOR split coming out really soon, actually.
DIOCELTIAN play a vicious style of Black/Death metal, and have been really involved with the ‘War Metal’ thing over the last few years. Their last album is really good - can pick it up from Osmose I believe.
And as far as rock n roll goes, Soulseller is the band that matters the most from here. They are THE greatest Rock n Roll band active in New Zealand today.


I really enjoyed the heavy and intense sound of “Morning Star Rise”. What are your influences and how do you create your songs normally?


Thats good to hear, Max! Influence wise, a lot comes from BABYLON WHORES, TYPE O NEGATIVE, MORTUUS and THE SISTERS OF MERCY. There are of course other bands, ideas and elements, but I’d say those are the key ones!
As far as songwriting, for most of them I usually put the songs together musically to around about 90%, and then bring them to the others to finish them off with personal touches. Scott and Mike also write songs for HOC, but I create most of the material. Once songs are sound reasonably in form, i write the lyrics and vocal patterns intermittently.
Perspective: Where I am the main songwriter for HOC, Scott is the main songwriter for CREEPING, and Mike is one of the two main songwriters for SHALLOW GRAVE, so we each have our ´creative outlet´ if you will.


What do you think about comparisons with MASTODON?


I´m not personally a big Mastodon fan (although I did like "Leviathan" when it came out - I haven´t revisited it in many years though), so I can´t say they would´ve had a big influence on us... but hey, if you hear a likeness, no problem!


What are your lyrics about?


The Devil. And the Apocalypse.


You chose “The Only Star In The Sky” to shoot a video. What makes this song special and what is it about?


Its probably my favourite song from the album. I think that it came out very well from the recording and mixing process, and the atmosphere we were trying to capture, we captured really well. The idea for the video seemed to fit perfectly with that song, and Amber (the lady who directed it) and Slick Black (the man who drew the images) did such a great job.
The song itself is about liberation in the light of Lucifer. And the apocalypse. Basically what I always write about.


What would you say are the biggest differences in comparison to your former records?


We spent more time ´producing´ this album, and had it mixed/mastered differently - it was a gamble, but it all worked out for the best, I feel! The songs are much shorter for the most part, too. This was a conscious decision - to keep things a little more concise.


I heard you are not planning any live-activities, that’s sad to hear – but why?


Unfortunately we’re not really operational as a live band at the moment.
